Beautiful, Typographic Puffin Books Covers, Created By Hand On A Chalkboard
Texas-bred, Brooklyn-based graphic designer and letterer Dana Tanamachi, who is known for her gorgeous chalkboard typography, has worked for high profile clients like Google, Bloomingdale’s and Time magazine.
More recently, she teamed up with Puffin Books, the children’s division of Penguin Group, to create the covers of the publisher’s “Puffin Chalk” collection of classic children’s titles.
The result is a set of beautiful book covers that was originally drawn by hand on a chalkboard before being photographed for reproduction—the chalk art-style covers are visually striking and whimsical at the same time.
Watch a couple of behind-the-scenes videos below to find out how the designer created these playful and creative covers with colorful chalk.
You can also purchase the “Puffin Chalk” book collection on Amazon.

WarGames poster for Skuzzles
WAR GAMES Regular Edition
WAR GAMES “Green CRT” Variant Edition
Early concept sketches.
Initial digital sketch and colour study.
An early version of the poster, including a can of TAB.
Oh man, here we go. I’m super proud to release a poster for one of my favourite childhood movies, WARGAMES (1983). I was approached by the crack team at Skuzzles and was absolutely honoured when they asked me to design this thing. Almost dropped the phone, no foolin’. This is my first officially commissioned movie poster outside of my work with Mystery Box. And this is printed by the totally badass DL Screenprinting. Hands are shaking just typing this.
Above you can see the regular edition as well as the special “Green CRT” variant. SO much green in there man, just like the computer screens of old. So lets cut right to the chase and post some details straight from Skuzzles High Command…
The Details
We are really excited to be announcing our latest addition to the Skuzzles poster family. We reached out to another of our fellow axe-wielding, plaid covered, maple syrup chugging Canadian, James White of Signalnoise, to create an officially licensed limited edition screen print for the 1983 cult classic WARGAMES. This Academy Award nominated hit starring Matthew Broderick, was one of the first movies to expose “hacker culture” on the big screen and featured the use of the IMSAI 8080 microcomputer and a 212A (Cermetek) modem. It was no surprise that James’ artwork completely nailed the feel of the movie combining the digital tech, military and character aspects of the film. When James presented us the idea of his variant to compliment his incredible stylish regular we were completely on board. The end result of the variant gives the perception you are looking at a monochrome CRT computer monitor aka “Green Screen”.
We can’t wait to hear your reactions when you see these war games screen prints in person. Such an amazing look to this print.

Illustrator Doodles On White Bicycle With Black Permanent Markers
Armed with black permanent markers, Paris, France-based illustrator Ugo Gattoni elaborately doodled a plain white bicycle for UK bicycle retailer Starley, to promote its bespoke frame design service.
The intricate bicycle frame with Gattoni’s personal touch is a one-off limited-edition piece, and does not take after a running theme; it features “palm trees, tigers and sunny skies, as well as… round-headed figures”, according to Creative Review.
This collaboration is said to be the start of something the company would be delving into: Starley is planning to work with more designers and illustrators for one-off designed frames, as more and more customers “want a bike with a personal touch—one that’s unusual and an investment,” Nick Fountain, Starley marketing manager, told Creative Review.
Gattoni’s doodled bike will be auctioned in September, to raise money for charity.
Would you buy this doodled-on bike?

‘Super Emo’ Illustrations of Superheroes And Other Pop Culture Characters
We do not often imagine our favorite heroes getting sad, but artist J. Salvador has created a cute series of posters to show that they do.
Called “Super Emo Friends”, this series pays tribute to our favorite pop culture characters—and their problems.
From Batman, who laments that his parents are dead, to the Green Lantern’s amusing complaint that his favorite color is actually yellow, these illustrations will definitely brighten up your day.

Astonishing Character Redesign by Coran Stone
I really enjoy reimagined characters from our childhood. Whether it's from comics or video games, it's just great to see someone like Mario sporting some big guns! Who wouldn't love to see an awesome animation with these below?
These come from the mind of the America artist Coran "Kizer" Stone. Pretty awesome imagination, dude! These are only a few of his pieces... at his DeviantART portfolio you'll get to see a ton more of his work. I bet you'll love it, just like I did. Cheers! ;)
Flintstones Living with Jetsons? It’s a Toon Conspiracy!
There’s far more going on in Bedrock and Orbit City than meets the eye… and illustrator Andrew Kolb is here to get to the bottom of it. He calls his playful mid-century themed illustrations “Cartoon Conspiracy’s” and in them he’s mashing up history both fact and fiction. The writeups we’ve quoted here are seriously funny, tracing his links between the space and stone ages, and the atomic age and Spongebob’s home in Bikini Bottom.
See Also The Future According to Film
Almost all of Kolb’s illustrations are sugar coated with clever nostalgia, bringing back the animated stylings of the 1960s cartoon boom along with the “glass half full” attitude of the booming era itself. He’s been producing prints, editorial illustrations and advertising pieces in his own consistently “neat” style. You can purchase his work at The Neat Shop, follow him on Tumblr, Twitter or Facebook, or see his portfolio at Kolb Is Neat. You can get prints for his two Cartoon Conspiracy’s at the currently running show at the Bottleneck Gallery in Brooklyn.
Seriously… be sure to read the hilarious ideas behind the images below:
”I humbly present to you the first CARTOON CONSPIRACY!
It’s suggested that the Flintstones and the Jetsons not only take place in the same universe, but at the same time! Set in a near future, the Jetsons live their automated lives high in the sky but what exactly are they living above?
The answer is ‘The Town of Bedrock’ and all of the other civilizations who chose to go the Amish route and lead a simpler lifestyle despite what the rest of the world might be doing.
The Flintstones exist in a near future where genetically created animals are made in the image of the past (though not accurately as shown some of the species are fairly wacky). Also, much of the technology of both worlds (record players, vacuums, etc.) function similarly but with very different materials…it’s because they’re running in tandem.
So remember that movie where the two families meet? Well it wasn’t time travel so much as it was TELEPORTATION! The Jetsons simply beamed to the planet’s surface and were as baffled at the simplified technology as I would be when presented with a butter churn.”
“And now the second CARTOON CONSPIRACY!
It’s stated that Bikini Bottom lies directly below Bikini Atoll. For those of you who (like me) need some catching up on ‘Bikini Atoll’, it was a nuclear testing site for the US government waaaaaaaaay back in the day.
So it’s pretty much confirmed that Bikini Bottom is the result of over a decade of nuclear testing (both above and below water). Now the question of how Mr. Krabs fathered a whale doesn’t seem quite so difficult to answer.
And while I rarely need my cartoons to be justified or explained, I’m comfortable with the idea that all this radiation allows for fire and water to behave differently on the ocean floor.
And there you have it! Again, this theory isn’t mine but it sure was fun to illustrate!”
