A Cola, Cola acuminata, é uma árvore da família Malvaceae, a mesma do algodão, hibisco, baobá e cacau. Suas nozes vêm de um fruto rugoso e duro que contém oito sementes com um invólucro branco, mas vermelhas por dentro. As nozes podem ser secas e trituradas ou fervidas para a extração da cola. Essa árvore cresce até os 25 m na África tropical da Nigéria ao Congo.

A masca da noz de Cola lembra muito a da folha de coca em termos culturais. Revigora, espanta a fome e dizem que até impotência resolve. É usada em rituais que vão da escolha do nome do bebê ao funeral, adivinhos também leem o futuro nas nozes da Cola, mais ou menos como fazem com búzios. Nas tribos, a masca é feita numa grande roda como se faz com o chimarrão no sul. Não é só na cultura ocidental pós-industrial que a Cola é importante!

Hoje é comum produzir o sabor da Cola artificialmente e a extração e comercialização da semente em si perdeu muito interesse. No entanto a noz ainda é cultivada na África e em outras regiões quentes.
