Calories Will Never Matter Again Now That Genius Person Has Invented A Dessert Lasagna

by Mary Beth Quirk

(via Gothamist)

(Robicelli’s Bakery via Gothamist))

If you’re the kind of person who enjoys a well-crafted pile of cheese, sauce and noodles and also happens to indulge in eating chocolate hazelnut spread straight from the jar, you might as well give up on any hope you had of living a normal life, unburdened by extra calories. That’s because some incredibly smart/possibly crafty villain person has invented a dessert lasagna called the Nutellasagna. Pass me the spoon. You know the one.

While Frankenfoods are taking over the pastry business, what with all the cronuts and doughssants (made that one up) going around, one bakery figured, why not embrace the hype?

As Gothamist reports, the Nutellasagna started as a new dish developed during a Brooklyn bakery’s Jump The Shark summer, where they tried to get ahead of the Frankenfood trend by making their own weird dishes.

All you need to know is what Robicelli’s pastry maker says about the answer to all your hopes, prayers and dreams:

It’s layers of buttery lasagna noodles, cannoli custard, copious amounts of Nutella, crushed roasted hazelnuts and chopped chocolate, with some marshmallows on top for additional sweetness. They’ll be sold in foil catering pans, so you can pop it in the oven at home and serve warm Nutellasagna after dinner. Or you can eat it cold or room temp—totally up to you. No fancy packaging—this is straight South Brooklyn guinea.

People who live in NYC can order a pan of the dessert lasagna from the bakery starting the week of Christmas, while everyone else will just have to step up to the bar and create your own. Dessert lasagna, let’s make this a thing, people.

Report: Sony To Officially Point Finger At North Korea For Huge Hack

by Chris Morran

The North Korean government has been openly critical of the upcoming Sony-distributed comedy The Interview, in which James Franco and Seth Rogen are tasked with assassinating Kim Jong-Un.

The North Korean government has been openly critical of the upcoming Sony-distributed comedy The Interview, in which James Franco and Seth Rogen are tasked with assassinating Kim Jong-Un.

Last week, it was revealed that Sony had been the victim of a massive data breach, resulting in the leak of Sony films, scripts, passwords, and sensitive information about employees and business operations. There have been rumors of suspected involvement by the North Korean government in the hack, and a new report claims that Sony will officially name the country as the source of the breach.

Re/code cites two sources “close to the investigation” as saying that Sony will soon point the finger in North Korea’s direction.

If so, will it name the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea as the source of the hack, or merely claim that the attack was perpetrated by the country, whose leadership is none too happy about the upcoming Sony-distributed comedy The Interview, in which James Franco and Seth Rogen are tasked with assassinating DPRK Supreme Leader Kim Jong-Un

A rep for Sony would only say that “The investigation continues into this very sophisticated cyber attack.”

CCTV Footage Shows World’s Coolest Customer Calmly Walking Away After Truck Collides With Building

by Chris Morran

Imagine you’re just about to sit down and enjoy a snack at your local bakery when, mere feet away, a truck plows right through the front of the building. If you’re like me, you’d run screaming with a howl so high-pitched that dogs would cry for miles around. But not so for one customer of a bakery in Cincinnati.

Around 30 seconds into the security camera footage above (NOTE: It can get pretty loud, so you’ll probably want to turn your volume down), you see a truck enter the frame — and then enter the building — creating a drive-thru lane where none had existed before.

But you’ll also see a man who was only a couple feet away from the crash when it happened calmly walk away from the scene as if someone had just spilled a drink and caused a minor annoyance.

The man tells WCPO-TV that it played out like a slow-motion action sequence from a movie and says that the force from the collision felt like an explosion.

The driver of the truck reportedly suffered a medical emergency, causing him to lose control of his vehicle and plow through the front of the bakery. He was found conscious by emergency responders and taken to a nearby hospital.

And while the customer may have avoided a horrible close call, the bakery owner says he may end up having to close the business during the heavily busy Christmas season.

Here’s what the crash looked like from the outside of the building:

This Deliberately Transparent Swedish Bank Commercial Is Highly Amusing

by Mary Beth Quirk

While we certainly know when big companies are trying their hardest to be funny, that doesn’t make it any less enjoyable when one of them actually succeeds. In this case, it’s the Swedes who have nailed it, in a new deliberately transparent ad for a bank that in turn, promises transparent services.

“Hello, I’m an actor,” an actor says in a video for Swedish bank Nordnet. “I’ve been paid $8,000 to tell you how great Nordnet is compared to other banks. “hey chose me because I’m more handsome than their CEO, and because I look successful in a suit.”

He goes on from there, listing the bank’s various selling points while explaining the motions of appearing like you’re in charge of a bank where you talk to people and shake hands while laughing.

It’s exactly what I imagined Business Jobs to be like as a kid, so I’m convinced this is an accurate portrayal. In any case, I laughed.

Man Arrested For Using McDonald’s McChicken As A Weapon Against Pregnant Wife

An ungrateful person complains when their spouse gives them a fast food sandwich they don’t like. A truly horribly human being assaults that spouse with the sandwich in question.

The Des Moines Register has the story of a 21-year-old man arrested yesterday for allegedly assaulting his pregnant wife with a McChicken sandwich from McDonald’s.

The man told police that his wife woke him up (at 1 p.m., no less) offering him the sandwich. And because he “doesn’t like them,” he got all pissy and threw the McChicken at her. To prove that he’s a true a-hole, he then picked up the bun and tossed that at the woman he pledged to spend the rest of his life with. The wife told police he actually smashed the bun into her face.

When she went to the bathroom to de-McChicken herself, the husband followed her and — for reasons that remain unclear — shot video of her with his phone. Police say that the footage shows the wife knocking the phone out of her husband’s hand.

Police believe that the husband was deliberately trying to provoke his wife into grabbing at his phone in an attempt to make her look aggressive, perhaps to bolster his claim that she assaulted him first.

The husband was arrested on charges of simple domestic assault.

Cruise Ship Diners Suspected Of Tossing Live Lobsters Overboard In Effort To Save Them

by Mary Beth Quirk

So a Canadian lobster walks into an English bar– er, bay, and he kind of scuttles. Anyway, despite whatever punchline you might’ve been expecting, Canadian lobsters really are showing up in English waters, and not because they were in the mood for a 3,000-mile swim. No, the recent influx of foreign crustaceans is likely the fault of guilty diners crossing the Atlantic on cruise ships.

The Homarus Americanus species of lobster has been showing up in the pots of fishermen in Yorkshire, reports the Daily Mail, which is especially bad for the lobsters as they can’t breed with local species and likely won’t survive long in UK waters.

As for how they’re getting there, one theory experts are entertaining is that do-gooder cruise ship passengers are ordering live lobsters and then telling waiters to throw them overboard in a misguided attempt to save the creatures.

Some of the lobsters are showing up with their claws still bound with rubber bands, but that’s only one problem — they could be bringing disease with them, and even if they do mate with local species, their offspring will be infertile, a rep from a fishing industry group explains.

“We think the most likely route is that they are getting thrown overboard from cruise ships,” he said. “People buy lobster for dinner, feel sorry for it and ask the waiter to chuck it over. In the grand scheme of things that’s a very small level of re-introduction.”

If you’ve got the itch to become a lobster savior, it’s best you don’t bother, he adds.

“They won’t last much longer than if the passengers had eaten them for dinner.”

Hershey Considering Replacing High-Fructose Corn Syrup With Sugar In Some Products

by Mary Beth Quirk

While some products from Hershey already feature only sugar as a sweetener, like the original Hershey’s chocolate bar, the company says that as more customers are shying away from high-fructose corn syrup, Hershey is considering moving toward sugar for more products in the future.

The chief research and development officer at The Hershey Co. told the Associated Press that right now the company uses a mix of sugar and high-fructose corn syrup, but now it’s “moving more toward sugar” in its products.

“We take into account what consumers want. And consumers are telling us between the two, they prefer sugar,” Will Papa told the AP.

Although there’s not enough evidence to prove that high-fructose corn syrup is any worse for people than regular sugar, some consumers say they avoid it over its reputation for boosting weight gain and diabetes.

Hershey said in a statement that right now it’s in the exploratory phase of possibly replacing corn syrup, a process that “is just under way.” Translation — if corn syrup is going away, Hershey can’t or won’t say when that’ll happen yet.

Right now, Almond Joy, Fifth Avenue, Take 5 and York all use corn syrup, while classic Hershey bars are made with sugar, a rep for the company explains.

“Our aim is to be transparent with our consumers about the ingredients we use in our products. Once we have more information to share, we will be back in touch,” Hershey said in a statement.

Unexpected Ways To Save Money On Eyeglasses

by Laura Northrup

Getting new glasses can be a stressful and expensive endeavor, but doesn’t have to be. You might be familiar with the optical shops at your local Walmart or Costco, but there are even more affordable options that you may not be aware of. If (like me) you’re fearful of having your lenses made and fitted through an online order, there are even options for you.

While mail-order spectacles outfits like Warby Parker are growing in popularity, most people who wear glasses don’t get them from a standalone optician or from their own doctor. Most people visit the optical store within a discount store like Walmart, Costco, or possibly even Sears.

Our in-focus colleagues down the hall at Consumer Reports put together some tips for saving money on glasses without sacrificing quality. Remember to ignore designer names: no matter what celebrity or fashion brand has their name on a pair of frames, they probably have come from the same place. Most frames that you find in stores, regardless of the name slapped on them, are made by the Italian eyewear conglomerate Luxottica, which also happens to own familiar American mall brands LensCrafters and Sunglass Hut.

One potentially useful piece of information: some shops will fit lenses in a pair of frames that you’ve purchased elsewhere, for a small fee. Walmart charges $10 above the cost of the lenses for this; Costco charges $18. Those are subject to change, so check with different stores to find the best option.

Disgustingly Rich People Charter Jets Just For Their Pets

by Laura Northrup

(D B)

(D B)

When a companion animal has to get from one place to another, there aren’t many options. After the demise of the former Pet Airways in 2012, pets either need to be driven from place to place, or travel by commercial air tucked under a seat or in the cargo hold. Or you could do what very, very rich people do: shuttle your pets from place to place using chartered luxury jets.

Yes, this is the level of service that your cat thinks he deserves, but is reserved for people who have around $67,000 to spare instead of paying for a first-class ticket. “They don’t want to go to Aspen or their holiday or to their second home without their pets being on board,” the CEO of charter company Jet Edge International explained to Bloomberg News. Of course.

It’s understandable why people who care about their pets would want to avoid sending them via cargo, but some pet owners seek the ultimate in air-travel madness: Bloomberg cites the example of a divorced couple who share custody of their dog, and send it back and forth across the country every other month at a cost of $50,000 per flight. Of course, the dog has to have a nanny as well.
