50 Shades of Grey

I was very tempted to put a different title for this post. 50 Shades of Sh*t came to mind but I thought that’s not very search engine friendly!

I know it’s old news now and everyone has been talking about it for weeks on end now, but I’ve finally finished 50 Shades of Grey. I won’t be continuing with the series. Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever read an erotic book that bored me so intensely. Much has been made about how wooden and uninteresting the lead characters Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele are but in my view that’s only a minor problem.

The biggest issue I have with 50 Shades is just how appalling the writing is.

I swear, if I had to read that Christian “finally found his release” as a euphemism for cumming one more time I would have thrown the book across the room. Considering this is a book dominated by a sexual relationship E L James really could have thought up some better ways to talk about the male orgasm. But no, literally every single time Christian cums, “he finds his release”. Ugh. It’s cringeworthy. In fact, the whole thing is so bad I can’t go on.

So, to sum up: dreadfully written BDSM fan-fic style novel with horribly contrived sexual description, boring characters and pointless cliffhanger. For a novel trying to extol the virtues of BDSM (I think that’s what she’s doing at least…) it makes the whole dom/sub thing sound in turns boring and pedestrian, then suddenly fucking scary and not something that anyone would want to do. Which of course is ridiculous.

I think there are two other books in the series. I won’t be buying them. Not even if they’re on offer in the supermarket.
