This Mass Effect collectible stands 21 inches tall, costs $350

by Owen S. Good
Matt Clarius

The perfect give for birthdays, holidays, and Bar Mitzvahs.

Fans of Mass Effect may be interested in a forthcoming, 21-inch tall collectible statue of Garrus Vakarian, the erstwhile Turian who fought alongside Commander Shepard throughout the space RPG's trilogy. However, they may need to consider their finances first.

Garrus Vakarian's 1/4 scale figurine runs $350, and will be limited to just 500 pieces worldwide. Maker Gaming Heads announced this week that pre-orders have opened, with a release planned for early 2015. Gurjeet Singh is the statue's artist.

Garrus Vakarian comes with an Incisor sniper rifle and a Phaeston assault rifle; the weapons are swappable. He is the first piece in Gaming Heads' new line of Mass Effect collectible statues. There are many more pictures of the figurine at...

Among the Sleep launching on May 29

by Alexa Ray Corriea
Matt Clarius

This is a nice surprise. Not sure if anyone backed this but I'll share my thoughts on it next week.

Among the Sleep will launch on May 29, developer Krillbite Studio told Polygon today.

The first-person survival horror title will be available for Linux, Mac and Windows PC. The PS4 version, which will launch at a later date, will also support Sony's Project Morpheus virtual reality headset.

Among the Sleep — funded through Kickstarter in May 2013 — places players into the footy pajamas of a two-year-old who is roused out of bed in the middle of a night by a series of paranormal happenings. Guided by his sentient stuffed teddy bear, the toddler must maneuver a nightmarish world without being swept away by what lurks within it.

The title was initially in development for PC only, but early this month Krillbite confirmed Among the Sleep...

Preview: Civilization: Beyond Earth is a sim with a slight alien twist

by Kyle Orland
Matt Clarius

I warned you...

Civvvvvsssss innnnnnnnn spaaaaaaaaaaccccce.

Following Firaxis' surprise announcement of Civilization: Beyond Earth just last month and ahead of a wider unveiling at E3 next month, select members of the press were recently able to get an early look at a pre-alpha build of the game. While it was hard to get a feel for the game's deeper structure in the short, early demo (which only included 50 in-game turns), we were still able to get a general idea of the game's interstellar twist on some extremely familiar Civ gameplay.

Right off, the most noticeable difference between Beyond Earth and earlier Civ games was the bug-like aliens swarming around our base city from the get go. The Firaxis representatives urged us not to go full aggro in attacking these aliens from the start, assuring us that they would generally ignore us if we ignored them. Sure enough, in between turns these aliens would mill about threateningly close to my city and units, but they didn't actually attack me until I started to attack them (after I had built up my defenses a bit). This makes this alien "faction" pretty different from the Barbarians in other Civ games, who are pretty much always good targets for a beatdown.

The other big change from the standard Civ gameplay experience came in the new quests that popped up every few turns. Some of these were relatively direct affairs—when a research pod crashes near your city, it only makes sense that you should send an explorer to check it out, for instance. The more interesting quests centered on actual decisions about the direction you want your civilization to grow. Early on, I had to decide between two labs that wanted to set up just outside my borders; one focused on "vertically integrated science" the other looking to do "cutting-edge biomechanical research for human-machine interface development."

Harrison Ford has been offered a role in the 'Blade Runner' sequel

by Nathan Ingraham
Matt Clarius

Uhhh, I'm not sure how I feel about this...

Harrison Ford already has expressed interest in appearing in a potential sequel to the Ridley Scott classic Blade Runner, and now he has a standing offer to appear in the upcoming sequel from the film's production company. According to Variety, Alcon Entertainment has put out an offer to Ford to return as Rick Deckard in the Blade Runner sequel, which will take place several decades after the original. "We would be honored, and we are hopeful, that Harrison will be part of our project," said Alcon heads Andrew Kosove and Broderick Johnson.

Little else is known about the film's potential plot, but Scott has confirmed that he'll direct. Original screenwriter Hampton Fancher and Michael Green are writing the follow-up. Ford said he was...

I'm glad 4A made it out of Ukraine. Woo new Metro game!

Metro 2033 developer 4A Games is relocating from its original hub in the Ukraine to Malta while developing a new and currently unannounced title in the Metro series, the company announced.

According to the developer, Malta's position as a state in the European Union will help the company compete at an international level. While 4A will continue to keep its Ukraine office, the new Malta studio will become its headquarters. Likewise, managers will begin making the move to the new building.

"Malta offers fantastic incentives for game development, and we are confident 4A Games will be able to attract the very best talent from Ukraine, Malta and beyond," head of business development Dean Sharpe said.

Norway's latest reality show is about birds in a coffee shop

by Chris Welch
Matt Clarius

Norwegian reality shows seem way better than American reality shows.

What do you get when you build a bird house modeled after a coffee shop and stick a camera in front of it? The answer is NRK's Piip Show, a "reality show" that's unlike anything you've ever seen. The 24/7 online broadcast captures every moment as a variety of birds (and sometimes squirrels) stop for a breather and tussle over food that's regularly dropped into the feeder. The show's concept was originally dreamt up by photographer Magne Klann in 2003, but it's now more popular than ever thanks to Norwegian TV station NRK.

Hands-on with Bioware’s Garrus Vakarian body pillow—very, very hands-on

by Lee Hutchinson
Matt Clarius

The perfect gift for birthdays and Bar Mitzvahs

Specs at a glance: Garrus Vakarian Body Pillow
Dimensions 6'4", dreamy, lotsa scars, heavily armed
No, the PILLOW's dimensions Oh. Uh, about 6' tall and rectangular—you know, pillow-shaped.
Material Some kind of cotton blend? Who even knows.
Texture accuracy Disappointingly pillow-like and not at all Turianesque
Snuggleability 8.66 out of 10
Calibrations performed All of them
Will Garrus return my love? No
Will I be lonely forever if I buy this? You will likely be forced to forsake all human contact, but at least you'll have Garrus
Price $40 at the Bioware Store
Do you seriously have one of these, Lee? ...maybe

It's no secret that I love Bioware's Mass Effect—last year I wrote a 10,000 word piece on why the series is so great, and I've played the games through more times and written more fan fiction and obsessively edited more Mass Effect music videos than anyone else on staff. I am the closest thing Ars Technica has to a Mass Effect editor. You can imagine, then, the absolute delight I felt deep down when FedEx dropped off my prerelease review version of Bioware's new Garrus Vakarian Body Pillow.

Body and build quality

The whole thing is six feet in length (1.82 meters), which means that Garrus himself is quite a bit shorter on the pillow than he is in real life (everyone knows that Turians are typically a bit over six feet tall). For better or for worse, Garrus is emblazoned directly onto the pillow—there is no pillowcase. This means that if you spill something onto him—like, I don't know, wine or something, like when the two of you are watching a movie—it's going to be a bit complicated to clean. You can't just throw the pillow case into the washing machine.

I was able to overlook the shortcomings of Garrus' height, though, since the pillow is well made and very snuggly. In bed, the pillow functions excellently, and I was able to hold it closely and whisper secrets and sweet nothings to it without any issues. The pillow also had no problems absorbing the tears that I shed on it—finally being able to have Garrus this close was an emotional moment, but he dealt with it admirably.

Excited for Grand Theft iPhone. How do I get to Paul's house?

Ubisoft's latest trailer for upcoming action adventure Watch Dogs gives viewers a tour of the game's version of Chicago, a bustling city with an underlying network of cameras and computers for protagonist Aiden Pierce to hack.

The video above details the game's dynamic lighting and weather systems, as well as the work put in to making sure all in-game citizens are realistic. Each NPC has its own personality and personal data for Aiden to hack, as the entire city is one giant playground for our hero to manipulate.

Watch Dogs will launch on May 27 for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. A Wii U version will follow at a later date. Senior producer Dominic Guay told Polygon that a 2014 release for this version...

Goat Simulator trailer shows the dangers of being a goat

by Alexa Ray Corriea
Matt Clarius

Goats!

The launch trailer for Coffee Stain Studios' Goat Simulator illustrates the perils of being a goat — or rather, having the world around you destroyed by a goat.

The trailer above is a parody of the widely-praised Dead Island trailer featuring scenes of destruction played backwards. For Goat Simulator, shots of the goat laying on the ground are cut between scenes of the goat wreaking havoc, people on fire, the goat crashing into buildings and flying through the air after a gas station explosion.

Goat Simulator will launch on April 1 for Windows PC. Check out our hands-on with the title from GDC 2014 for more details on how players can destroy their surroundings and carry heavy objects using the goat's abnormally long tongue.

Facebook To Acquire Oculus VR Inc for $2 Billion

by Ian Cutress
Matt Clarius

No jokes :(
Fuck you, Facebook. This is why we can't have nice things. I'm probably being overly pessimistic...

Back in September 2012, a $2.4 million Kickstarter campaign finished to help develop the next wave of immersive gaming in Oculus Rift.  The premise behind Oculus Rift is a virtual reality headset that puts you deeper into the game than any other headset has ever done before.  Since that Kickstarter campaign news about Oculus has penetrated all of technical media in terms of the development, the nature of the device and what sort of games are going to be able to use it.  I remember a few images of Brian and Anand trying the Crystal Cove prototype at CES this year.

The news today comes as a shock (to me at least) – Facebook has announced today that it has reached a definitive agreement to acquire Oculus VR Inc at a $2 billion dollar value.  This includes $400 million in cash and 23.1 million shares of Facebook stock (~$1.6 billion on last 20 day average).

Oculus will keep their headquarters in Irvine, CA and continue development on the Rift.  With Facebook moving to the help (it is unclear at this point just how much of a role they will play), the focus may shift towards a more social scenario and future for the device, alongside the anticipated action game genre.

The deal is expected to be completed during Q2, and we are awaiting further information as to the depth of the acquisition and how each firm will operate under the new structure.  Facebook should have a lot of money from its IPO in order to help drive Oculus investment, perhaps accelerating the process.

Source: PRNewswire

"We are excited to work with Mark and the Facebook team to deliver the very best virtual reality platform in the world," said Brendan Iribe, co-founder and CEO of Oculus VR. "We believe virtual reality will be heavily defined by social experiences that connect people in magical, new ways. It is a transformative and disruptive technology, that enables the world to experience the impossible, and it's only just the beginning."

Disney is planning sequels to 'The Incredibles' and 'Cars'

by Kwame Opam
Matt Clarius

MOAR INCREDIBLES! Also, please retire Cars. You've beaten that poor horse enough already.

At the Disney Investor's Meeting today, Variety reports, Disney chairman Bob Iger casually mentioned that director Brad Bird is in the process of writing a sequel for 2004's The Incredibles. While details are currently scarce, the move makes sense — The Incredibles was a critical darling after its release, and went on to win Bird his first Oscar for Best Animated Feature.

Iger also mentioned that Disney is planning a third outing for its Cars franchise. While Cars and Cars 2 both failed to garner the praise that other movies in Pixar's stable have earned, the series has become a lucrative franchise thanks to merchandising and theme parks. Even the terrible Planes spin-off earned $220 million at the box office last year. Audiences...

South Park: The Stick of Truth won't feature Uplay integration

by Jenna Pitcher
Matt Clarius

Here I was thinking Dom was some kind of wizard when all I had to do was check my Polygon feed to answer my own question.

South Park: The Stick of Truth, Obsidian Entertainment's role-playing game based on the long-running television series, does not require Ubisoft's Uplay service to run, the developer revealed on Twitter.

Responding to a fan's question if Uplay will be requirement to play the Steam version of South Park: The Stick of Truth, Obsidian confirmed that Uplay is not an implemented feature. The developer went on to state that players will not have the option of using the Uplay service with game as it "was not integrated at all" into the title.

Ubisoft launched the Uplay platform for PC in 2012 and rolled out Uplay 4.0 to PC last October. The update introduced Twitch streaming services, an "improved download manager" that allows for...

For the second time, Monty Python member Terry Gilliam is working on a movie about the meaning of life. The Zero Theorem stars Christoph Waltz as angst-ridden and essentially hairless computer genius Qohen, working on the titular zero theorem. Understanding AMD’s Mantle: A Low-Level Graphics API For GCN

by Ryan Smith
Matt Clarius

Sharing this for John since he's so out of the loop.

Wrapping up our AMD product showcase coverage, AMD’s final announcement of the day was a very brief announcement about a new API called Mantle. Mantle is something of an enigma at this point – AMD isn’t saying a whole lot until November with the AMD Developer Summit – and although it’s conceptually simple, the real challenge is trying to understand where it fits into AMD’s product strategy, and perhaps more importantly what brought them to this point in the first place. So although we don’t have all of the necessary details in hand quite yet, we wanted to spend some time breaking down the matters surrounding Mantle as much as we reasonably can.

In the long run, do Steam sales harm gamers?

by Colin Campbell
Matt Clarius

I see his argument, but I thought Steam sales typically resulted in a huge boost in revenue for a developer. I can't see it as anything but a win for everybody. The superfans will buy at release for full price (like I did with XCOM), and people who might not have even bought your game will buy it on sale. It's good for consumers and good for developers. DayZ is a good example of this. It's not even finished and the developer publicly told people not to buy it yet and it's still sold almost a million copies at its full price.

Steam's multiple sales events are hugely popular with gamers. They are one reason why the download service is growing so quickly. Sales are also a useful revenue source for game developers.
