Gulf ‘dead zone’ could be as a big as Jersey

by Jim Erickson-Michigan

U. MICHIGAN (US) — This year’s “dead zone” in the Gulf of Mexico could be very large and potentially record-setting, predict researchers, who also offer a forecast for the Chesapeake Bay.

Spring floods across the Midwest are expected to contribute to a very large and potentially record-setting 2013 Gulf of Mexico “dead zone,” according to a University of Michigan ecologist and colleagues who released their annual forecast today, along with one for the Chesapeake Bay.

Sleepy teens make bad food choices

by Jacob Levich-Stony Brook

STONY BROOK (US) — Teenagers who get a good night sleep tend to eat healthier than their sleep-deprived peers, a new study suggests.

“Not only do sleepy teens on average eat more food that’s bad for them, they also eat less food that is good for them,” says Lauren Hale, associate professor of preventive medicine at Stony Brook University.

Why whales are huge (and monkeys are not)

by Emily Walker-Monash

MONASH U. (AUS) — Scientists are a bit closer to solving a puzzle of evolution: why some families of mammals evolved to be super-sized, while others have remained small.

In research published in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, researchers propose a new theory explaining the diversity of mammal sizes—from the Etruscan shrew, which weighs around two grams, to the blue whale, which clocks in at almost 200 tons. Surprisingly, baby weight relative to adult body mass is key.

Snow Leopard Cub and Mom Play at Dudley Zoological Gardens

by Andrew Bleiman

Introducing Dudley Zoological Gardens' newest arrival: an eight-week-old Snow Leopard cub! The cub is the first Snow Leopard to be born at the zoo in 12 years. The youngster, who was born on May 2, has been nicknamed Cub X by keepers until they confirm its sex. The baby made its public debut recently and delighted visitors with five-minute play-arounds with mom, Nanga, aged four. Dad is three-year-old Margaash. Assistant Curator Richard Brown said, "Nanga is a first-time mum so it's such a relief that they have bonded well. You can see the baby developing every day, it's wonderful to watch, and already it seems quite a feisty little cub."

Photographer Tal Choha said,  "The youngster's routine at the moment is to sleep for two hours, play for five minutes, sleep for two hours, then play for another five minutes, so I had to make sure I got there in time for those crucial five minutes!" Sneak a peek at the cub's playtime in the video below. (Spoiler: there's some tail-chasing action ahead!)

Following a 90-100 day gestation, Snow Leopard cubs are born with full black spots which turn into the characteristic rosette pattern as they grow older. Offspring remain with their mother until they mature at 18-22 months. Adults can weigh 55 to 165 pounds (25-75 kg).

Snow Leopards originate from Central Asia, including Afghanistan, Mongolia, Nepal, Pakistan, and Uzbekistan, where they inhabit remote scree slopes and forests between altitudes of about 6,000 to 18,000 feet (1,800 to 5,500 m). They are listed as Threatened on the International Union for Conservation (IUCN) of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species. According to the IUCN, main causes of the Snow Leopard's decline include habitat loss, poaching, and persecution, as conflict arises when the predatory cats take livestock.

The pair of pups made their public debut on June 20.  Zoo keepers report that Shila and Qilak are taking excellent care of their newborns.  The newest pup weighed 22.6 pounds (10.3 kg) at birth.

In the wild, Seals feed on a wide variety of fish.  You can see mother Seal eating fish in the video above.  For now, of course, both pups get all their nutrition through their mothers’ milk.

Musk-Ox Calf is a First for Highland Wildlife Park

by Andrew Bleiman

Highland Wildlife Park’s female Musk-ox, Karin, has given birth to the Zoo's first ever Musk-ox calf. Born on Wednesday, May 15th, little Belle has spent her first few weeks of life off-show with mom, but has now started to venture out into her outdoor enclosure.

Belle’s mother Karin was born in the Czech Republic in 2002 and came to the Park only 18 months ago in January 2012. Three-year-old father Myse arrived a few months later in May.

Belle is not only a little cutie, but this hooved newbie is also a significant step in the Musk-ox breeding program– she is the first Musk-ox to be born in the UK in 17 years, an important achievement for the Zoo’s expert animal husbandry team.

Musk-oxen have an extremely thick coat which consists of two parts: long course outer hairs and a soft dense undercoat called qiviut (pronounced kiv-ee-ut). Qiviut wool is highly prized for its softness, length, and insulation; it is considered to be one of the lightest and warmest wools in the world.

Research by female scientists gets less exposure

by Amy Stone-Sheffield

U. SHEFFIELD (UK) — It’s not clear why high quality scientific work by female academics goes underrepresented in comparison to that of their male counterparts, experts say.

The researchers analyzed the genders of invited speakers at the most prestigious gatherings of evolutionary biologists in Europe—six biannual congresses of the European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB) and found that male speakers outnumbered women.

‘Tree-of-Heaven’ wreaks havoc in forests

by Matthew Swayne-Penn State

PENN STATE (US) — A type of tree that went from prized possession to forest management nightmare shows what can happen when non-native species mix with human interactions.

“There are other invasive tree species in Pennsylvania, but the ailanthus, by far, has been here longer and does more damage than any other invasive tree,” says Matthew Kasson, who received his doctorate in plant pathology and environmental microbiology from Penn State. “It’s the number one cause of native regeneration failure in clearcuts in Pennsylvania.”

Why do girls still list ‘Lord Of The Rings’ next to things they are interested in? Do they not realise guys haven’t seen that as ‘edgy’ or ‘attractive’ since about 2006?
The fact you enjoy one of the most successful book/films of all time does not make you stand out, alright?
Now, If you’d write how much you love the work of David Gemmell or Brandon Sanderson, then.. yeah, I’d hit it.

And here I was thinking that the list of things I’m interested in was a list of things I’m interested in.

But in all seriousness, a guy who is, in any way, impressed that I like any of the things he does is not someone I want to even associate with.

*blinks at fandom subculture, the huge majority of which is women geeking out with each other over media and turning out mindblowing quantities of art, writing, costumes, and other high-commitment tributes to the stuff they like*

And

and he thinks the only reason women express the fact that they like things is to hop on his dick?

He thinks all of that is for him?!

AHAHAHAHAHA

image

It’s always amazing how some men think everything women do and like and wear is for them. e_e  And that the most important thing in the world about women is whether or not they’d “hit that”, as if they have the pick of every woman on the planet, and secondly, that it’s super crucial we all know whether something we do or don’t do, or like, or don’t like, means they want to have sex with us.  SUPER CRUCIAL.

Do we really have to take this?

A friend of mine was moving from her apartment. She asked me to look after some of her things. I agreed and not too long after she asked if her daughter Frances can come pick it up. I agreed and she came over with her boyfriend, who was also the father of her baby. I helped them carry the stuff down to the car, and during the whole visit exchanged possibly 10 words.

Next day I received these texts. I had to created a fiancee I didn’t really have in order for him to stop.

I never told my friend what her daughter’s boyfriend did. Now they are expecting a second child, so as you all see, there was no break up.

So Do we women really have to take this kind of attitude?

Do we have to invent things and people in order to be left alone.

I don’t want to have my titties banged.

I am not an easy lay.

I don’t deserve this.

Why do I go from being called “cute” “smart” and “pretty” in the beginning of the conversation, to “fatty” “bitch” and “ugly” in the end?

Puppy Beats the Heat with Innovative Butt Freezer

Champ, a bulldog from Houston, TX, wasn’t a happy camper. Recent mid-90s temperatures were just too much for the puppy, who prefers much more mild temps.  So Champ decided to do something about it.

After a few days of sketching ideas, the innovative dog figured out how to repurpose the refrigerator into a heat-beating, butt freezing machine.

Champ recently presented his invention to applause at the local community hacker space. He’s considering launching a Kickstarter to raise money for a first production run.

emmagrant01: This is exactly why feminist perspectives are so...

by areshoekiddingme

emmagrant01:

This is exactly why feminist perspectives are so important in anthropology. Historically, almost all anthropologists were male, and as a whole, the field only viewed the contributions of males to (any) society as significant enough to study. When anthropologists studied traditional hunter-gatherer groups, the male anthropologists usually focused only on what the males in the group did. They literally ignored the contributions of women to the group, for the most part. It wasn’t until women like Margaret Mead entered the field in the mid-20th century and began looking at what women in these cultures were doing and the ways in which they were powerful that the field began to notice the contributions of women at all. And even then, the old boys of the field were highly skeptical and challenged the work of female anthropologists continuously.

Happily, there are few serious anthropologists left who actually believe that early humans lived such violent lives. By the time I did my anthro coursework in the 1990s, that was a caricature of the beliefs about early humans that everyone laughed at and no one took seriously. Even 20 years ago, the field knew that was a sexist and outdated idea.

Quote of the Day: Rape kits are…abortions?

protestors gather in Texas to oppose anti-choice bill

Protestors gather in the capitol rotunda to oppose Texas’ omnibus anti-choice bill. [Image via]

On Sunday night, hundreds of pro-choice activists flooded the Texas state capitol to try to block the Republican-controlled legislature from passing a massive anti-choice bill–a bill that includes a 20-week abortion ban and would shut down all but 5 clinics in the state. The “people’s filibuster” had successfully delayed the vote for a dozen hours last Thursday, but in the early hours of Monday morning, the House gave preliminary approval to the bill.

As Think Progress reports, in the midst of the long debate, perhaps the most absurd claim (ever?) was one made by state Rep. Jody Laubenberg, who explained that she didn’t support an exemption for rape victims in the 20-week ban because rape kits are a form of abortion.

“In the emergency room they have what’s called rape kits where a woman can get cleaned out,” she said, comparing the procedure to an abortion. “The woman had five months to make that decision, at this point we are looking at a baby that is very far along in its development.”

There is literally nothing about this that makes any sense. In fact, I’m not actually sure exactly where Laubenberg went wrong, but here are some facts: A rape kit is used to collect DNA evidence from a survivor’s body. It has nothing to do with abortion. Some hospitals provide emergency contraception to rape victims. EC is not  the same as abortion. People like Rep. Laubenberg, who do not have a basic understanding of the proposals they are debating, are making policy that will affect the health and lives of millions of Texans.
