Wal-Mart Canceling Plans for Three D.C. Stores Over 'Living Wage' Bill
LeahgatesI'm actually really surprised this bill got any traction, even though I actually do think it is a good idea--it doesn't just help people get paid a living wage, it raises the labor costs of companies who make a profit on the basis of reaping economies of sale in source & distributing their goods, making it a little easier for smaller operations to compete with them
Wal-Mart is pulling out of two, possibly three, D.C. sites where it planned to build stores, citing the D.C. Council's impending adoption of a bill mandating large retailers pay a "living wage." [ more › ]House Spending Bill Includes Abortion, Needle-Exchange Social Riders D.C. Hates

To deal with problems, avoid them (for a little while)
Leahgatesthis is terrible advice for me to have

U. TORONTO (CAN) — The best way to manage stressful problems at work, school, and home may be to take your mind off them—temporarily.
Researchers sampled a group of university students faced with the challenge of managing work, family, and school responsibilities. The research focused on two distinct avoidance strategies—actively taking one’s mind off problems, or hoping those problems would simply disappear.
Those who actively took their mind off their problems were better able to manage those multiple responsibilities and experienced increased levels of satisfaction than those who simply hoped the problems would go away.
Tiny trouble spots can fix complex networks
Leahgatesthis could be amazing

NORTHWESTERN (US) — A new computational approach identifies interventions that can both rescue complex networks from the brink of failure and reprogram them to a desired task, report researchers.
As the world becomes increasingly connected, the need to ensure the proper functioning of its many underlying networks—such as the internet, power grids, global air transportation, and ecological networks—also is increasing. But controlling networks is very difficult.
Swallow insulin instead of inject it?

BROWN (US) — With a new “bioadhesive” coating, intestines better absorb nanoparticles into the bloodstream—a necessary step toward one day swallowing drugs like insulin.
For protein-based drugs such as insulin to be taken orally rather than injected, bioengineers need to find a way to shuttle them safely through the stomach to the small intestine where they can be absorbed and distributed by the bloodstream.
In acidic water, reef runs wild with algae

UC DAVIS (US) — Entire ecosystems can degrade in acidic water, according to experiments near volcanic vents off the coast of Italy.
Scientists say the findings point to the potential longterm effects of ocean acidification.
Echolocation maps reveal best spots for bats

U. LEEDS (UK) — Using open-source software to sort the echolocation calls of eight bat species, researchers have created maps that show suitable areas for the animals to live.
In the Journal of Applied Ecology, researchers describe how they recorded more than 15,000 calls during 120 walks in the Lake District.

"[TW: rape culture] When rapists engage in sex acts without bothering to gain their sex partner’s..."
LeahgatesI just want to remind everyone how great Amanda Hess was at covering AU sexist bullshit when she worked at WCP
When rapists engage in sex acts without bothering to gain their sex partner’s consent, they are not “accidentally” raping someone. Rapes don’t come from miscommunication. They are not isolated, unpreventable incidents. They are a product of institutionalized, reinforced, life-long privilege. They are the symptoms of a flaw in the rapist’s entire worldview. They are the product of the way the rapist has habitually devalued women, laid claim to the bodies of others, pursued what he wants no matter what—and never thought anything of it because he has never been called on it. That’s not an accident. That’s a system.”

Whose voice is heard?
Today before class, one of my male classmates engaged me in a conversation about Kanye West’s new album. He told me that while many of Kanye’s lyrics are misogynistic, they also detail his depression and unhappiness. My classmate made the argument that a possible feminist reading emerges in which Kanye’s dissatisfaction with life stems directly from his misogyny.
I haven’t listened to the new album and don’t know enough of Kanye’s music to agree or disagree with his reading, and I say so. Because my classmate has previously proved to be a critical thinker and feminist ally, I mention that I do think that too often women’s stories and experiences are overshadowed by men’s. And that, while both he and Kanye possess valuable opinions, it’s most beneficial to the movement for men to help prioritize women’s voices.
He nods the entire time I’m talking. When I’m finished he looks at me, confused, and says, “But I’m not a sexist."
Thanks for listening to what I had to say, dude.

Big gains for kids in expanded Head Start

U. OREGON (US) — Preschoolers in Head Start who took part in an additional intervention showed significant improvement in behavior and attention, and their parents had reduced levels of stress.
The findings, from the first phase of a long-term research project that will monitor families over time, are published online in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Glowing dye could put more rapists in jail

U. VIRGINIA (US) — Fluorescent dye that works on darker skin could allow forensic nurses to better document injuries resulting from sexual assault—and increase the odds of justice for women of color.
After a rape, forensic nurses fully document sexual assault victims’ injuries by using a dye that causes lacerations and tears on the skin to “light up.” But the dye—a dark blue—doesn’t show on people of color, and that often means the perpetrators go free.
