Public Housing waitlist huge; so is the list of long-vacant available units

by perruptor
KV

this shit infuriates me

Massachusetts Has a Huge Waitlist for State-Funded Housing. So Why Are 2,300 Units Vacant? (Propublica)

Families are stuck in shelters or sleeping in their cars while a flawed state selection process and meager funding for renovations leave apartments empty for years.

a WBUR and ProPublica investigation found that nobody is living in nearly 2,300 state-funded apartments, with most sitting empty for months or years. The state pays local housing authorities to maintain and operate the units whether they’re occupied or not. So the vacant apartments translate into millions of Massachusetts taxpayer dollars wasted due to delays and disorder fostered by state and local mismanagement.
. . .
The vacancies are aggravating a statewide housing crisis. Massachusetts is spending $45 million a month to house people temporarily at hotels, shelters, college dorms and a military base. Gov. Maura Healey declared a state of emergency in August to deal with the wave of homelessness. Massachusetts reports that the number of families with children staying in emergency shelters has almost doubled in the past year to 6,386.

Boston Restaurant Talk gets the salty scoop: The steak guy with the funny way of putting salt on steaks has closed up shop in Boston, where, you may recall, he opened up in Park Square at the height of the pandemic only to get shut down after barely a week for violating the city's Covid-19 restrictions.

The Boston Licensing Board today approved the sale of the Pour House's liquor license to Dani’s Queer Bar, 909 Boylston St. in the Back Bay.

Manager Thais Rocha hopes to open a full-service restaurant and bar aimed at "LGBTQ+ women and non-binary people" later this summer or early this fall, in the old Pour House location, using the license being acquired from landlord Charles Talanian.

The Pour House closed, like its neighboring bars, in the early months of the pandemic in 2020.

Cleveland Circle office building could be replaced by six-story apartment building

by adamg
KV

oh no our bodega is in this bldg

Rendering by Embarc.

City Realty has filed plans with the BPDA to replace a three-story "underutilized" office building at 358 Chestnut Hill Ave., next to the Circle pizza place, in Brighton, with a six-story, 30-unit apartment building.

The Allston-based developer and landlord says the $10.5-million project would have five affordable apartments and a parking lot for 19 cars, as well as ground-floor retail space.

The company bought the property for $3.45 million in 2021.

As the site is located within the Aberdeen Historic District, much care has been taken in the design of the building and landscape to fit within the district’s guidelines, and the design team spent considerable time working closely with urban design staff of the BPDA and Boston Landmarks Commission prior to the submission of this application. The building’s façade is organized in tripartite with a clear base, middle and top to the building. A strong cornice line at the fifth floor breaks the massing and ties into the adjacent context along Chestnut Hill Avenue. Materially, the use of brick respects the neighborhood context while modern detailing creates depth and texture to the façade. The residential entry is signified by a vertical break in the massing and material tying into the sixth floor which has been stepped back from the lower levels to minimize the perceived height of the structure. Large window openings and Juliet balconies have been incorporated on the front façade to take advantage of view facing the reservoir.

The company hopes to begin 18 months of construction in early 2025.

they kind of give me museum gift shop vibes but in a good way

Just wanted to take a moment and appreciate the magical work of Mariko Kusomoto. She works in several mediums, including metal and resin, but her fiber pieces are my favorite.

They are so stunning, ethereal, and also playful. Many of her pieces are wearable. Her work has been featured in galleries and museums all around the world and she has even collaborated with Jean Paul Gaultier on his final runway presentation in 2019. She describes her fiber process as using “… different kinds of techniques, but mainly, I use a heat-setting process. This technique makes the shapes permanent in synthetic fiber when it is heated to a certain temperature. I use different kinds of molds to create those shapes.”

Below is a video interview she did explaining more of her background and process.

See more of her work here and definitely follow her on Instagram and FB.

Zara Atelier Collection 03: The Skirt

by Lorenzo Marquez
KV

Obsessed with #2

ZARA ATELIER is an imaginatively progressive Zara project that is dedicated to unleashing fashion’s infinite potential to express individual personality via expert craft and mindful design. Intentionally specific in focus, every season ZARA ATELIER challenges its creative team, alongside its studio of specialists dedicated to tailoring and craftsmanship, to concentrate on one category of garment: following seasons dedicated to the dress and the coat, for this third instalment, that garment is the skirt, showcased in a series of images by photographer Nick Knight.

The Atelier team has created six variations of the skirt, designed with unbridled creativity to unlock a multitude of wearable attitudes. Limited only in number, the fabrication, construction, and embellishments are all of the highest standard. The result is a capsule collection that subverts any standardised, cookie-cutter approach to defining clothing. Instead it reflects an inherently diverse approach to fashion that amplifies the exceptional uniqueness of every individual character who wishes to engage with it.

One garment, six ways, unlimited possibilities.

The Skirt – 1

Inspired by the physical architecture of technologically-driven advances that emerged during the 1940s, this skirt embodies an attitude of modern feminine independence. Featuring hand-set corsetry and boning and crafted in various shades of off-white both sheer and opaque, this organza and satin design features hook-and-eye tie details, ribbon edging, and a discreetly tonal floral pattern. Fitted high and close to the body, Skirt 1 transmits sensual self-possession.

The Skirt – 2

Epitomising ZARA ATELIER’s mission to catalyse worn uniqueness, each example of this full, asymmetrically pleated skirt was first cut and sewn in blue taffeta, before being individually screen printed by hand in brushstrokes of soft silver. Designed to appear different from every angle, and in its every limited individual example, the design enables pleats to play against draped pouf as movement generates a constantly changing platform for those unique patterns. Abstract and softly structural in form, Skirt 2 is a mesmerisingly wearable canvas that rises and shifts beyond the body within.

The Skirt – 3

A satin waistband-suspended gathered balloon miniskirt in black georgette is the striking starting point for this party-perfect third chapter in this season’s ZARA ATELIER portfolio. Down across the left hip rests an irregular half-moon section of individually embroidered golden tubes that ripples with reflection and gently sounds as the wearer moves. Draped from the right side, meanwhile, is a full swathe of fabric set with gently reflective microbeads that twists, shimmies and cavorts with more sinuous wearer-generated movement. Dynamic, alluring and demonstratively tactile, Skirt 3 is a captivating catalyst for restlessly expressive spirits of the night.

The Skirt – 4

Framed by two laterally pleated folds of fabric, this skirt is layered with a subtle pentimento of hand applied pattern. Crafted in pale vanilla cotton, the piece is painstakingly embroidered with an embossed botanical relief which is delicately emphasised with crystal tubing. To create a contrast between the highly fashioned main body of the design, its waistband and hem are defined by a raw finish: this also telegraphs the non-mechanised handicraft that was central to its creation. Sophisticatedly understated, Skirt 4 is a piece whose deeply considered design features are not cosmetic but inherent.

The Skirt – 5

This long and loose, delicately narrowed A-line skirt in light, hand-treated leather is a striking assemblage of patched sections and panels in five complementary patterns. Featuring one accented ruffle, also in leather, that falls from the left thigh down diagonally to the right knee, the skirt plays polka dot against ditzy floral against color block. Inherently bohemian but distinctly modern, Skirt 5 has been designed to transmit character, while acquiring ever-more character as it is worn, lived-within, and loved.

The Skirt – 6

The finale piece in this six chapter section of self-contained exercises in fashion storytelling is fittingly ebullient. Designed to amplify an already irrepressible personality, this skirt is crafted from rivulets of sequin strips, all hand-applied, that fall in a shimmering stream from the waist. Skirt 6’s wearability is bound only by the sense of adventure, daring, and freedom possessed by the woman who chooses to possess it.

Halle Bailey in Valdrin Sahiti at THE LITTLE MERMAID Hollywood Premiere

by Lorenzo Marquez
KV

i love it

To return to the topic of theme-dressing once again: while we’re not the biggest fans of it as a red carpet practice, there are times – usually involving high-visibility intellectual properties like super-heroes and Disney characters  – where you just have to accept it as part of the promotional process. In other words…

This dress is a very obvious choice for a Little Mermaid premiere, but it’s also a very correct one. The design is right on the border of being gimmicky but we can’t deny the gorgeousness and visual impact. We suspect that some will find the boobyness a little distracting if not inappropriate for a Disney premiere but Disney knew what they were getting when they hired her. This is very much her style. We wouldn’t normally suggest gilding the lily on such a high impact look, but given the Disney setting and mermaid theme, we think some fun colorful jewels would have been spectacular with it.

Frode has gained international attention from his daily sculpture project. He creataes a new sculpture every single day to push his creativity and experimentation with materials. As he puts it, “It’s a way for me to stay connected to my artistic side every day.”

Using a range of materials from ceramics and wood to found objects and plastics, Frode’s sculptures are an incredible mix of bright colors and playful shapes. I am obsessed with all the pops of neon, and honestly, I’m here to petition for a Frode Bolhuis clothing line! The looks he creates are insane. I could also see them as amazing costume designs for a movie or ballet.

this post is rude but i’m sharing for the looks lol

On April 26, Canadian crooner Shawn Mendes was spotted cruising around West Hollywood with three stylish mates. The thirsty foursome gaily picked up fruity drinks at clean-beauty chain Detox Market. One of the fashionistos coolly strolled the streets shoeless, toting what appeared to be the Holy Bible under his arm. Another one of the smoothie kings wore a simple black ensemble that accentuated his hairy chest, with pops of color in his rainbow manicure and gold hoop earrings.

Happy Monday Everyone! I hope you all had a great Easter if your celebrate it. Mine Easter was okay. I spent the morning at home with baby girl and Ant. Then in the afternoon I went to work for a closing shift. Which work wasn’t the greatest. It’s probably going to take me a few days to get over it. Since I dwell on thing that upset me.

One thing about me is I’m a people pleasure. Which some people say that’s not a bad thing. Which some days I think to myself that it is a bad thing. Since everything I make some upset or mad. It breaks me down. Since I didn’t make them happy. I wish I knew why I was like this but like I said some people say it’s not a bad thing. They also say that I’m a bubbly happy person. Which is true.

As for my work outfit last week. I had it get all my use out of my Easter clothing. Since I will be boxing it back up for next year. The next holiday coming up is Mother’s Day. So get ready for see a lot of mama shirts.

HAVE A GREAT MONDAY!

Vintage Syndee Crafts 18" Doll Kit From eBay

by Heather from PennilessCaucasianRubbish Dolls Blog
KV

My daughter says she 'looks like she's depressed' but I think she's pretty.

Hi Doll Friends!!

So, just when I think I have 'seen it all' in the 18inch doll 'world'... I'm on eBay shopping researching and low and behold, what comes up? Syndee Crafts 18inch Doll kits. What?! How have I never heard of these?? I mean it appears they were made in... actually I have no clue when they were made but for whatever reason I have it my mind that they were likely released in the 1990s. Don't know why I get that impression and I could be totally wrong. Any of you know?

So I have ordered three of the kits so far... The three dolls above are them finished. The very top one was actually put on an Our Generation doll body because I like that body style better. I happened to find that Our Gen doll at the thrift store and she had a defective eye and so I didn't feel bad at all about making her a body donor for the Syndee doll kit I had at home.

Here are the 'tags' that came on the packages. If you look at the top one it says that the clothes were made with fabrics by Daisy Kingdom. That's the reason I keep thinking it was in the 1990s cos I seem to recall buying fabrics by that brand back then.

So here is the first kit I put together. It's pretty straitforward in how you assemble. Obviously you have to buy some polyester stuffing to stuff the body.

As you can see, there is a fabric body, five 'zip ties', two arms, two legs and a doll head. You just run the zip ties thru the slot in both the arm pit area and the hip area and then the neck. You stuff the body, I stuffed it REALLY heavy so it'd be sturdy when I tried to stand the dolls up.

Here is how she looked when I had her mostly put together. I was testing out how well she could stand up and if I wanted to put more stuffing in.

Here is the second one I did. I love her face best of the three I think but they are all pretty.

It seems like this doll's face was quite a bit more 'shiny' than the other two. Not sure why? I love her pretty eyes!

This is the third kit I bought. She's the one I decided to put on the Our Generation body.

Here is the Our Generation body donor.

What was strange on this doll was it like her hair had started to disintegrate in the package. Not sure if it was due to age or if she was stored in too much heat or what, but little bits of her hair got everywhere. So... I decided that was coming off and she was going to get new hair.

Here she is after I sheared off her hair.

I went into my bag of wigs... Yes, that's a thing I have... haha. I don't really buy wigs for specific dolls. I just buy wigs that appeal to me when great companies like Doll of a Kind have a sale. I always know that the right doll will come along to use the wig for and that was just the case here.

So here she is all done. A total 'hybrid' because her head came from Syndee's Doll, her body from Our Generation and her wig from Doll of a Kind. I love how she turned out!

My daughter says she 'looks like she's depressed' but I think she's pretty.

So... Have any of you ever had one of these kits and put it together? I don't know for sure if the three that I bought are going to be the only ones I end up with... There are several other face sculpts and you know me, I'm a sucker for having one of every face sculpt in the 18inch doll world. Teehee. So, I'm certain I'll likely end up with more of these. Here are some photos (from eBay) of other face sculpts I've seen:

Sorry I forgot to edit this and the photo below and have the whole screen shot from my phone but if I go edit them now I'll get distracted and may never get this posted. Haha!

So that's it for now... Gotta run!

Shirley Temple Danbury Mint 14Inch Doll From eBay!

by Heather from PennilessCaucasianRubbish Dolls Blog
KV

So if 14inch dolls are your favorite size or if you love Shirley Temple or just dolls in general, you can't go wrong with this one!

Hi Doll Friends!

I was watching this video on underrated dolls by Munecas, Poupees and Dolls Youtube Channel. The first doll she mentioned was the Shirley Temple Danbury Mint 14inch doll. I'd never heard of this doll and she also mentioned you can find her on eBay for pretty good prices so... off to eBay I went to look for her. Low and behold, she was right. I found one that had a starting bid of only $5.99 and so, on a lark, I bid $6.00 and kind of forgot I even had... Until... I got a notice that I'd won the bid! So I plunked down the $20.00 (including shipping) and she was on her way home to the doll house!

She actually arrived on my actual birthday last week! I think she is so pretty and am so happy to have added her to my collection. I plan to do a comparison of her and Wellie Wisher or Glitter Girl dolls soon... Never enough time!

So if 14inch dolls are your favorite size or if you love Shirley Temple or just dolls in general, you can't go wrong with this one!

Gotta run...
