A Multistimuli-Responsive Photochromic Metal-Organic Gel

A photochromic metal-organic gel with thermo-, photo-, and anion-responsive behavior is obtained. Unusually, heating of the Al–ligand solution leads to gel formation and cooling to room temperature reverses the process to reform the solution. The gel is sensitive to weakly coordinating anions. Additionally, reversible photochromic transformations take place both in the solution and gel states, accompanied by reversibly switched luminescence.

Ideal Three-Dimensional Electrode Structures for Electrochemical Energy Storage

Three-dimensional electrodes offer great advantages, such as enhanced ion and electron transport, increased material loading per unit substrate area, and improved mechanical stability upon repeated charge–discharge. The origin of these advantages is discussed and the criteria for ideal 3D electrode structure are outlined. One of the common features of ideal 3D electrodes is the use of a 3D carbon- or metal-based porous framework as the structural backbone and current collector. The synthesis methods of these 3D frameworks and their composites with redox-active materials are summarized, including transition metal oxides and conducting polymers. The structural characteristics and electrochemical performances are also reviewed. Synthesis of composite 3D electrodes is divided into two types — template-assisted and template-free methods — depending on whether a pre-made template is required. The advantages and drawbacks of both strategies are discussed.

Bio-inspired nanocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction

Tunable Visible and Near-IR Photoactivation of Light-Responsive Compounds by Using Fluorophores as Light-Capturing Antennas

Abstract

Although the corrin ring of vitamin B12 is unable to efficiently absorb light beyond 550 nm, it is shown that commercially available fluorophores can be used as antennas to capture long-wavelength light to promote scission of the Co[BOND]C bond at wavelengths up to 800 nm. The ability to control the molecular properties of bioactive species with long visible and near-IR light has implications for drug delivery, nanotechnology, and the spatiotemporal control of cellular behavior.

Copper Conversion into Cu(OH)2 Nanotubes for Positioning Cu3(BTC)2 MOF Crystals: Controlling the Growth on Flat Plates, 3D Architectures, and as Patterns

A new approach for the fabrication of homogeneous HKUST-1 [Cu3(BTC)2] coatings on copper metal plates, 3D objects, and as patterns, is here proposed. The conversion can be performed at room temperature in approximately 30 minutes using an aqueous ethanolic mixture. The two step conversion mechanism occurs via the formation of Cu(OH)2 nanotubes. Microscopic time-course monitoring reveals the conversion steps. The adhesion of the metal organic-framework (MOF) crystals, as well as the functional properties of the resulting supported catalyst, are successfully tested. The versatility of the conversion mechanism on different metal copper substrates is investigated as well; in particular, a photolithography protocol is proposed for the preparation of MOF patterns. This protocol offers several features (short processing time, applicability to any copper metal object, low cost of the equipment, room temperature conditions) that would make it favorable for basic research and industrial exploitation of MOF capabilities.

怪咖心理学:天生好运存在吗?

为什么有些人总是在对的时候出现在对的地方,有些人却是衰事连连?人可以改运吗?出生月份真的会影响人的运气吗?为什么?
 

或许运气也是由自己决定的?

你是幸运儿,还是不幸者?为什么有些人总是在对的时候出现在对的地方,有些人却是衰事连连?人可以改运吗?10年前,我决定研究运气心理学来回答这些有趣的问题,为此我已经和1000位来自各行各业的幸运儿与不幸者合作过。
 
幸运者与不幸者的人生差异很明显。幸运的人似乎总是在对的时候出现在对的地方,喜从天降,人生总是受到上天的眷顾。不幸的人刚好相反,他们的人生往往充满失败与失望,他们相信自己的不幸都不是自己造成的。苏珊可说是研究中最不幸的受试者之一,她来自黑潭市,现年34岁,担任看护助理,感情路一直非常不幸。有一次她和某人相亲,对方骑摩托车来相亲的途中发生车祸,摔断两条腿。下一个相亲对象则是撞上玻璃门,鼻子断了。几年后,她找到结婚对象,婚礼教堂却在她的大喜之日前一天遭人纵火焚毁。苏珊也碰过许多惊人的意外,其中一段最不幸的经历,是她在50英里的旅程中就发生8次车祸。
 
我想知道运气好坏是偶然的,还是可以用心理学来解释这些截然不同的人生,所以我设计了一系列的研究来调查。在其中一个特别令人难忘的研究中,我拿报纸给一些受试者看,请他们看完后告诉我里面有几张照片,我没告诉他们我在中间穿插了一个意外的机会。这个“机会”占了半个版面,以超大的字体写着:“告诉研究人员你看到这个,就可以赢得100英镑。”不幸的人通常都太专心计算相片,没注意到这个机会。相反的,好运的人比较放松,看的面向较广,会发现有机会可以赢得100英镑。这个简单实验可以看出幸运者如何善用意外的机会来帮自己开运。
 
像这样的结果显示,受试者因为思想与行为不同,而为自己带来大部分的好运与坏运。幸运者比较乐观、积极、乐于接触新的机会与经验。相反的,不幸的人比较孤僻、笨拙、对人生感到不安、不愿善用突然降临的机会。
 

隐藏在时间中的运气

最近我做的研究也跟时间心理学有关,是探讨俗话说有些人天生好运是否属实。这个项目,是因2004年瑞典于默奥大学医院的捷安堤.邱泰教授(Jayanti Chotai)寄给我的一封古怪的电子邮件。
 
捷安堤的研究大多是探讨出生日期与心理及身体健康的关系。捷安堤做过一项研究,请2000人填写问卷,衡量他们自认喜欢追求刺激的程度,然后看问卷的得分与出生日期之间是否有关。寻求新奇刺激是性格的基本面向,喜欢寻求刺激的人无法忍受看过的电影,喜欢和不按牌理出牌的人共处,对登山或高空弹跳等危险运动很感兴趣。相反的,不爱寻求刺激的人喜欢一再欣赏同一部电影,喜欢老朋友令人放松的熟悉感,不喜欢到没去过的地方。捷安堤的研究结果显示,喜欢寻求刺激的人通常生在夏天,比较喜欢熟悉事物的人比较可能生在冬天。
 
捷安堤在电子邮件中表示,他看过我在个性与运气的关联上所做的研究,想知道是不是有些人真的天生好运。这是个有趣的想法,所以我们决定连手探索这种说法是否真有几分道理。
 
捷安堤之前的研究显示,出生月份和个性之间真的有关,但关系不大。为了查出很小的关联,需要进行数千人的研究才行,我们也知道这并不容易。找几百位学生参与研究通常就已经很难了,更何况我们如果想找出蛛丝马迹,还需要从各行各业找来数千人才行,还好我们就近找到了帮手。
 
苏格兰举办的爱丁堡国际科学展是全球历史最悠久的科学展之一,也是欧洲规模最大的。我们把实验纳入科学展中,就很有可能吸引大量的受试者参加。科学展的主办单位也准许我们进行研究,我们架了一个简单的网站,让大家输入生日,回答我设计的统一问卷来评估他们的运气。
 
进行大型公开实验总是充满不确定性,它不像实验室的研究一样,你只有一次机会把它做好,你也不知道大家愿不愿意花时间参与。不过,我们的研究吸引了大家的关注,马上传遍全球。网站上线才几个小时,就已经有数百人上网。科学展结束时,我们已经收到4万多人的数据。
 
结果相当明显。捷安堤已经发现夏天出生的人比较乐于冒险,我们实验的结果也显示,夏天出生者(3-8月)也比冬天出生者(9-12月)觉得自己幸运。12个月份出生者自认的幸运度呈波浪状,5月最高,10月最低(如下图所示)。只有6月和整体型态不符,我们把它归为统计偏差。

这种现象有许多种可能的解释,很多说法认为跟冬天的温度比夏天低有关。或许冬天出生的婴儿碰到的环境比夏天出生的婴儿辛苦,他们和看顾者比较亲近,所以比较不爱冒险,人生比较不是那么幸运。或许在严冬生产的妇女和夏天生产的妇女摄取的食物不同,所以孩子的个性也不同。不管是什么原因,这种效应理论上很有趣,表示出生时的温度对个性的发展有长远的影响。
 
但是在接受任何温度相关的解释以前,我们应该先排除其他可能的机制影响。或许这种效应和温度无关,而是和会随着月份变化的其他因素有关。评估各种说法的唯一方式,就是到温度与月份关系不同的地方重新做一次研究。如果与温度有关的说法是正确的,比较温暖的月份应该还是和比较幸运的出生日期有关。
 
南北半球的温度与月份关系正好和北半球相反。北半球6月炎热,12月寒冷。南半球6月是冬天,12月炎热。所以我决定到地球的另一端重做一次实验,比较温度与占星这两种解读“天生好运”的说法。
 
但尼丁市位于纽西兰东南岸,两年举办一次科学展。2006年,我收到纽西兰科学展主办单位的来信,他们听说需要在南半球重做一次“天生好运”的实验,想知道我愿不愿意在他们的科学展再做一次研究,我很快就前往纽西兰了。
 
纽澳两地的全国媒体都报导“天生好运2”的实验,帮我们吸引大家上另一个特别设计的网站。几天内就有2000人提供他们的生日月份及评估他们的人生幸运度。实验结果支持温度相关的说法,在南半球夏天(9至2月)出生的人比冬天出生的人(3到8月)觉得自己比较好运。这次12个月份的比例也是呈现波浪状,不过这次的高峰在12月,低点在4月。
 
“天生好运”之类的研究显示,出生月份对人的行为有细微但实质的影响。不过其他研究人员也研究过完全相反的效应,也就是说,人的行为会影响他们与他人所宣称的生日。

Simple and Compelling Biomimetic Metal–Organic Framework Catalyst for the Degradation of Nerve Agent Simulants

Abstract

Inspired by biology, in which a bimetallic hydroxide-bridged zinc(II)-containing enzyme is utilized to catalytically hydrolyze phosphate ester bonds, the utility of a zirconium(IV)-cluster-containing metal–organic framework as a catalyst for the methanolysis and hydrolysis of phosphate-based nerve agent simulants was examined. The combination of the strong Lewis-acidic ZrIV and bridging hydroxide anions led to ultrafast half-lives for these solvolysis reactions. This is especially remarkable considering that the actual catalyst loading was a mere 0.045 % as a result of the surface-only catalysis observed.
