How to Drive

Holy crap, I can think of, like, five hundred people I want to get this book for. And I know I'll encounter at least 3 to 7 more on my drive to work tomorrow morning. How to Drive: Real World Instruction and Advice from Hollywood's Top Driver calls itself "the ultimate guide to being the best--and safest--driver possible." Boy do I hope it's right. And that it can succeed where parents, driver's ed, common sense, and watching the F'ing road have failed.

You may never have seen How to Drive author Ben Collins before, but you've almost surely seen his work. In addition to having raced in both the Le Mans series and NASCAR, Collins has served as a precision and stunt driver for Top Gear ("The Stig"), James Bond films Quantum of Solace, Casino Royale, and Skyfall, and Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. Oh, he's also burned Dark rubber in the Batmobile.

In How to Drive Collins puts the expert skills he's learned over the past 20 years to paper. Starting with...how to sit in the driver's seat. Literally. Are you comfortable? Are your adjustments right? From there you've got your shifting, steering, braking, cornering, and then avoiding accidents, dealing with intersections, and passing (oh please BenCollinsandBabyJesus give a lesson on merging here.)

The book culminates with what are likely to be the only things that interest anyone who already has a driver's license to begin with: skidding. Wet weather maneuvering, snow rolling, worst case scenarios, and a little stunt driving intel to cap it all off.

New Doctrinal Mastery in LDS Seminary

by Larry Richman

seminary-classNext year, LDS seminaries around the world will be implementing a new Doctrinal Mastery that will replace the existing Scripture Mastery.

Instead of having students memorize specific scriptures, the new Doctrinal Mastery program will focus on doctrinal topics to help students learn to study, ask questions, and teach one another. It will help the youth make connections between the doctrines of the gospel and how to apply them in their everyday lives so that they can become spiritually self-reliant.

“These young people are immersed in a digital world where they are literally bombarded every day with voices and messages from the world,” said Elder Kim B. Clark, Commissioner of Education for the Church. “Many of those voices and messages raise questions and issues of the day directly related to what we believe.”

For the youth of the Church today, asking questions and being asked questions is common. The desire is that students can bring their questions to class and instructors can teach students in a setting of faith with someone they can trust instead of just going to the internet to find their answers.

Elder M. Russell Ballard said, “More than any time in our history, your students also need to be blessed by learning doctrinal or historical content and context by study and faith accompanied by pure testimony so they can experience a mature and lasting conversion to the gospel and a lifelong commitment to Jesus Christ.”

Learn more about this new program in the article “Seminaries to Implement New Doctrinal Mastery Initiative.”

DC Comics’ lead ‘Batman’ writer draws upon CIA experience for inspiration (Video)

by Sarah Beth Hensley

By Steve Winter and Kenny Fried, special WTOP correspondents

WASHINGTON — A wise old sage once said, “If you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.”

That axiom could very well apply to comic book artist and Capitol Hill resident Tom King who, after 17 years of honing his craft, has landed what some might consider the dream job of a lifetime: he is the lead writer of “Batman” for DC Comics.

Having spent half his adult life in the comic book industry — and, interestingly enough, the other half working for the CIA — King finds his current position both fascinating and terrifying. With DC Comics rebooting its entire lineup under the overarching brand of DC Universe Rebirth, King’s first venture – Batman Rebirth #1 — is set to launch in just two short weeks.

Already — through pre-sales — that title holds the unique distinction of being one of the best-selling comics of 2016.

For true aficionados, a preview of what’s to come is already on the shelves. Earlier this week, DC Comics released Batman Rebirth #1, which King co-penned with Scott Snyder, the “Batman” author he is poised to replace, essentially laying foundation for King’s solo debut.

“I’m insanely nervous and insanely excited for Batman #1,” said King, appearing this weekend at Awesome Con at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. That said, he’s also supremely confident, having mapped out a bold new future for America’s favorite costumed vigilante.  “The first issue will be classic Batman — this is Commissioner Gordon on a roof, this is Alfred in the cave, we’re seeing a Robin-esque figure, Duke Thomas, who is his new ward. The new Batmobile is a take on the classic Batmobile. The whole theme of this book is using every modern storytelling technique I know to connect with classic Batman stories.”

The inspiration for the stories he plans to create is really quite fundamental — the subject matter will come from today’s headlines.

“Batman is the kind of character that lives in the soul of America,” King said. “When you look back, he always reflects the times. Superman, doesn’t grow, doesn’t evolve; but Batman has always evolved and he’s kind of a mirror of who we are. So I think the Batman we’re seeing now, he has some of the optimism of modern America, granted with a little bit of grit. But he’s also facing some of those dark threats that he doesn’t quite understand, just like we’re facing those dark threats that we don’t quite understand.”

Watch an interview with King at Awesome Con:

In many ways King, draws upon his seven-year stint with the CIA to define the heart and soul of his Batman character.

“The thing about the CIA is that we get as close to the enemy as possible without becoming the enemy,” he said. “That’s what makes it such a special organization — that call to duty to get into the muck with the bad guys without becoming one of them … and when I think of Batman, I think of that kind of character. He gets as close to the insanity of Gotham as he possibly can without becoming that insanity; although he’s always on the danger of going over that edge; which, if you’ve ever read a thriller novel, you know that’s what happens to nearly every operative of the CIA — they come that close to going over the edge.”

“Essentially, you see the worst of humanity and you try to come out of every scenario with the best of it. That’s what the CIA was to me … and that’s what Batman is, too.”

To put those thoughts into perspective, one need only reference the “Dark Knight” quote from the movie “Batman Begins” when he says, “It’s not who I am underneath, but what I do that defines me.”

The same can most certainly be said about King.

Homeless Teen Girls Learn How To Code

by Dan Jones

The Brookview House is a non-profit that provides shelter to homeless women and children. Among other programs, the non-profit also provides a coding club for teen girls.

The club members are middle or high school girls. Some are already homeless and live in Brookview House and others are at-risk for homelessness and are referred to the program by their schools. Since the girls don’t have computers, they use the ones found at the Brookview’s computer lab.

Superhero GPS Street Art Discovered on Vehicle Tracking Software

Dan Jones

That X-Men logo must have taken a long time to do.

Superhero GPS Street Art Discovered on Vehicle Tracking Software

RAM Tracking, a GPS vehicle tracking company, recently discovered works of ?GPS street art? when looking through its system?s tracking database.

The project was picked up after a Data Analyst at RAM Tracking noticed a consistent number of irregular vehicle journeys ? by one particular client. It was quickly found that a driver, from a London-based electrical business, was creating a number of recognisable superhero-inspired images ? via the vehicle?s GPS tracking software.

While the images are more Picasso than Michelangelo, the linear element of the street art was intricately carried out over several weeks across major roads in London. After contacting the business, RAM Tracking found that the project was carefully planned by Matt Smith, owner of MS Electrical*.

Matt explained: ?It took a lot of preparation, but it was a lot of fun to carry out. It was great to see that I could create pieces of undercover art, with the help of RAM?s route replay feature, which I access every day. I wasn?t expecting anyone else to notice, so when I got the call from RAM Tracking enquiring into the activity, I was surprised. It made me smile knowing that they had seen my antics!?.

Chris McClellan, CEO of RAM Tracking, spoke about this imaginative use of the GPS tracking technology: ?We certainly weren?t expecting a client to get so creative with our software ? especially as our services are primarily used as a tool to help decrease business operating costs. GPS technology has sky-rocketed in use over the last five years, and it is continuing to see a significant growth for both personal and commercial use. ?GPS street art? is something that we had seen with the use of running and fitness apps, but it came as a pleasant surprise when it was spotted in our system!?

Q*Bert Desk Organizer

Dan Jones

I wish I needed to organize stuff on my desk, but sadly, I have no use for this.

Oh @!#?@! Where'd I put my pen? Did I lose those scissors again? Dave Delisle, whose THOR Hammer Tool Kit you just saw here, has also birthed this Q*Bert Desk Organizer brainchild.

Like the tool kit, Q*Bert in neat 'n' tidy form is just a concept, which Dave developed when he realized his current desk organizer is "very boringsauce." His design converts the classic arcade game and its foul-mouthed star into a tiered system of colorful cubes with a little Q*Bert ruling on top. Dave notes that Q*Bert could serve as a flash drive, pencil sharpener, or stress toy. The mock-up pyramid shown has 3 tiers of storage, but could be expanded to 4 or 5 to meet the needs of those with even more crap cluttering up their desk.

I think Dave should also incorporate some LEDs and touch-sensitive tech so that each cube changes color whenever you put something in or take something out of it. Maybe the dudes who made Pixels could pitch in with that feature. Oh, and if you can get all of the cubes to turn the same color, you get the rest of the day off work.

Google Fiber TV box getting updated with limited Google Cast feature

by Dima Aryeh

The lucky few that have Google Fiber have it good enough as it is, and almost every tech nerd is green with envy. But Fiber is about to get significantly better with a simple update to the Fiber TV box.

This update adds Google Cast functionality to the box, turning it into a Chromecast. No longer will you have to switch inputs to a dedicated Chromecast or Google TV, because now you can stream content from your phone directly to your TV box. It’s not a huge addition, but it’s a really nice feature.

Unfortunately, it comes with a caveat. Hulu, WatchESPN, Disney Channel, Disney Junior, Disney XD, WATCH ABC, Spotify, and HBO NOW are all not supported, though HBO GO is. This is likely to do with the owners of these apps trying to restrict streaming on a cable box, which is unfortunate, but that’s how it is.

So yes, just because it’s a cable box, you lose some functionality over a standard Chromecast. You may not want to throw that little dongle away just yet. The feature rolls out within the next few weeks, so Google Fiber users should start seeing it soon. Fiber users, are you upset by these restrictions, or do they not affect you? Leave a comment!
