Sega removes 16 games from iOS App Store and/or Google Play

by Christian Ponte
Dan Jones

I didn't even know Altered Beast was available. That's one of my favorites! I hope they bring it back. (Or maybe I'll just get the Genesis ROM and play it on an emulator)

150518jetsetradio

Under a policy for apps to continue to meet certain certain standards, Sega has pulled over a dozen games from the Apple and Google online stores that it deems no longer offer quality experiences. From the iOS App Store, Sega has removed the following 15 games:

  • After Burner Climax
  • Altered Beast
  • Ecco the Dolphin
  • Golden Axe
  • Golden Axe 3
  • Phantasy Star 2
  • Sega Columns Deluxe
  • Space Harrier 2
  • Streets of Rage 2
  • Streets of Rage 3
  • Super Monkey Ball
  • Super Monkey Ball 2
  • Super Monkey Ball 2: Sakura Edition
  • Virtua Fighter 2
  • Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown Guide

On Android, the games After Burner Climax, Jet Set Radio, and Super Monkey Ball 2 are no longer available through Google Play.

Sega previously stated that some of the removed titles might return at a later date in updated forms.

The Sound Torch Flaming Bluetooth Speaker

We've seen speakers that make light dance and speakers that make water dance, so it's only natural that someone would come up with one that, er, lights a fire under the feet of fire. The Sound Torch is a Bluetooth speaker with real flames that ebb and flow along to the beat of your music.

As a new take on the Pyro Board, the Sound Torch takes the shape of a portable cube filled with lighter fluid and fitted with a Ruben's, or standing wave flame tube running in 2 dimensions. When music plays the sound waves create high and low activity areas that affect the amount of gas able to flow out of the Torch's holes. Of course more gas = more fire, but Sound Torch's creators show in their video how varied the total resultant effect can be as each song generates its own unique pattern of flames.

Like most Bluetooth speakers, the Sound Torch will connect to any compatible audio player. Its built-in battery has around a 12-hour playtime when fully charged, and its fuel reservoir holds enough lighter fluid of 4 hours of pyro dancing.

While the Sound Torch should not be used or left in the unattended company of children under 18, everyone else can pledge for their own speaker of fire on Kickstarter through June 15, 2015.

I’m Not The Target Market For ‘Supergirl,’ Which Is Why I’ll Probably Love It

by Jon Negroni
Dan Jones

I didn't realize this would connect to the new DC TV Universe. The Sneak Peek looks good. Strays a bit from the comic characters (Jimmy too sure of himself, Kara not sure enough), but I think the changes they've made will be good.

CBS recently unveiled their 6-minute “First Look” trailer for “Supergirl,” which is one of their first superhero TV shows ever and a new connective tissue for the ever-expanding DC comics TV universe controlled by by the mind of Greg Berlanti. Yes, “Supergirl” exists alongside established superheroes like the Arrow and Flash, who currently fight crime on the CW (a network owned by the same company as CBS). That doesn’t mean the show will crossover much or even at all with the aforementioned supers, but it could happen at least once.

supergirl

But the real story is how “Supergirl” will make its mark when it comes to its lead character. Leading up to this trailer, many speculators like me have wondered how they’ll portray the character of Kara Zor-El, the cousin of Superman. And you know what? They’ve pretty much nailed it. Look, the issue of handling female superheroes for TV and movies is extremely volatile. Just look at the craziness that erupted with Black Widow over the last month.

There’s undoubtedly a lot of people shaking their heads at how DC/CBS is tackling Supergirl (many of them are even women), but I’m not one of them. Specifically, there are some of you out there worried about having a “girly” superhero living in a romantic comedy script. I’ve heard things like, “Well I’m a guy, so this show wasn’t made for me.”

supergirl

Right, because women everywhere who love comics aren’t used to watching shows not made for them. As a guy who’s used to seeing strong, confident heroes like Black Widow and I guess Black Canary to an extent get their time, I couldn’t be more excited about seeing a younger, less sure of herself girl grow into becoming the unstoppable hero we know she can be.

Why does Supergirl have to be GoGo Tomago? Why can’t she be a little awkward and clumsy like, say, I don’t know, Clark Kent? Yes it’s a little silly, cheesy, and corny. So was “The Flash,” and we all know how that turned out. I’m not someone who easily relates to the struggles of a girl living in the big city trying to overcome self-doubt.

But that’s probably why I’ll end up loving the show. It’s new territory in the sense that the story is being told through a genre I absolutely love with a character I wouldn’t normally find relatable.

supergirl

Of course, I haven’t seen the show itself yet, so who knows how it’ll actually turn out. I’m a little wary of Jimmy-er-James Olsen being portrayed by this cool and confident professional instead of the bumbling, shy nerd we know from the comics. I’m not crazy about Toyman and Hank Henshaw essentially being the new Harrison Wells/Caitlin Snow (really guys? Can’t we do something different for this show?)

But as for Supergirl herself, I think CBS is onto something, and it’s great news for all of us if other studios start taking notes.

Also

  • Any nitpicks I could make about the overall casting is essentially obliterated by the fact that Melissa Benoist (Whiplash) is playing the main character. They nailed it.
  • The premise of fighting alien threats a la metahumans in “Flash” is interesting enough. It’s good that Kara will have some challenging opponents along with Metallo.
  • Hopefully, this shadow Superman will reveal himself as Dean Cain in the finale (that’s a joke).
  • That costume is the 1.0 version (think “Daredevil”). Hold off all complaints until we see the official version.
  • Wow, “Gotham” is really starting to look like a missed opportunity at this point.

RIP Mr. Burns, Smithers, and Ned Flanders

by Jason Kottke
Dan Jones

This will be the end of the show. They say they'll go on without him, but there's no way the can recast his characters in a satisfactory way, nor can they just write his characters out (about 1/4 of the men on the show, I'd bet).

Mr Burns Dead

Harry Shearer, who voices dozens of characters on The Simpsons including Mr. Burns, Smithers, and Ned Flanders, announced on Twitter that he will be leaving the show. A few things:

1. The Simpsons is still on?

2. Shearer also voices Principal Skinner, Otto, Lenny, McBain, Reverend Lovejoy, Kent Brockman, Scratchy, Dr Hibbert, and dozens of smaller characters.

3. Will they replace him? Or just not use those characters anymore? How can you do the show without Burns, Smithers, Flanders, and Skinner? But if they sound different, how can you do the show with them?

Lily Autonomous Drone Camera

My friend Cornelius and I threw a Lily in the air once in 6th grade. She dropped like a sack of twice-baked bacon and brown butter potatoes. (Don't worry, there was a lake there to catch her.) But throw this Lily in the air and she'll not only stay there, she'll fly. And she'll follow you wherever you go. Filming your exploits, triumphs, and feats of strength from above. And she'll do it all on her own, completely autonomously.

Lily's creator, Antoine Balaresque, calls his team's lady simply a camera, reinvented. With no remote controller or pilot required, Lily might look a little like a quadcopter and act a little like a drone, but its flights and feats are accomplished with zero human manipulation. Instead, the personal cameraman tracks its target via computer vision technology and GPS. Lily stands out from from other auto-follow drones in part because it is an all-in-one system (as opposed to a drone with an attached camera, purchased separately), and in part because its pre-order price, available until June 15, 2015, is less than half the $1,200+ tags on the likes of the AirDog and HEXO+. Lily anticipates shipment dates beginning in February 2016.

Lily also promises to arrive assembled and set up, with the intuitive operational steps of: 1) Throw the camera in the air to start a new video; 2) Go about the business you want photographed and recorded.

Lily's polycarbonate and aluminum body was designed to be sturdy and waterproof. It's heftier than most quadcopters at close to 3 pounds, but the added weight is needed to accommodate internal sensors such as an accelerometer, three-axis gyro, barometer, GPS, and front- and bottom-facing cameras. Following users via a small tracking device they wear or hold, the camera can shoot 12-megapixel stills and HD 1080p videos at 60 frames per second. The tracking device communicates position, distance, and speed to the on-board sensors, which then determine where and how close to fly. Lily takes off from and lands in its owner's hand.

The camera will fly at a maximum speed of 25 mph and maximum overhead height of 50'. Sensors will also ensure it never roams more than 100' away from its user, or get closer than 5' (to any object). Users will also have the option to specify an exact location or path for Lily to fly.

Domino’s to Roll Out ‘Tweet-a-Pizza’

by John Gruber
Dan Jones

Dominos really wants to make it super easy to get you pizza. Maybe they should put all that effort into improving their pizza.

Bruce Horovitz, reporting for USA Today:

Beginning May 20, Domino’s, the pizza delivery behemoth, will roll out a “tweet-to-order” system that lets U.S. customers tweet for pizza. Domino’s will become the first major player in the restaurant industry to use Twitter, on an ongoing basis, to place and complete an order.

Even wackier: Domino’s frequent customers will be able to order by tweeting only the pizza emoji to @Dominos.

Seems like validation for the Push for Pizza guys, who’ve been doing the “order a pizza in just a few taps from your phone” thing since last year.

Also worth noting that in today’s world, “ordering online” means ordering from your phone — but without making a phone call, and in most cases without using a web browser.

I Am Chewie Hoodie

Holy crap, Rheurrrrrr Glglglglg Rararararara, and Hubba, hubba! It's the furriest, frilliest Chewbacca hoodie yet, modeled by the furriest, hottest Wookiee fan yet. I Am Chewie certainly isn't the first attempt to bring Han Solo's co-pilot to zip-up life you've seen around here (remember the Mark Ecko classic and reversible copycat?) but it's definitely the one best suited for ladies. Fancy ladies. And also pimps.

Sold through We Love Fine, a fandom-based online store stocked by independent artists and designers, the I Am Chewie Hoodie features long locks of polyester fur and an applique satin bandolier. Its liner is 100% cotton. In this case, Chewbacca comes from Kashyyyk by way of a design studio in Los Angeles.
