7 Ways You Can Get Your Baby's Name Wrong

by Laura Wattenberg

I don't usually talk about "bad" baby names. Names are chosen with great thought and care, and a choice isn't wrong just because it doesn't suit your taste or mine. Yet I've talked to enough anguished parents to know that it's possible to for a name choice to lead to painful regrets. The usual misstep isn't bad taste, but a bad decision process. Here are the most common mistakes that can lead to namer's remorse:

1. Talking yourself out of your own taste. Parents put a lot of pressure on themselves to be creative with their name choices. I've heard plenty of wistful moms talk about lifelong favorite names they abandoned out of fear that they're not original or distinctive enough to impress people. Listen to your heart. If you get a happy glow when you hear a particular name, chances are others will too. What better start in life could a child have than a name that makes people happy?

2. Putting the middle name first. "We're using the middle name Morton after my grandfather. What first name goes with Morton?" Red alert, red alert! You're doing this backwards. You're not going to use that middle name on a daily basis, and frankly, you don't even like it. (If you did, you'd be using it as a first name.) So put the middle name aside until you've come up with a few ideas you really love, then it can serve as a tiebreaker. Don't count on a middle name to fix a tough first-last match, either. At the end of the day, Reed Alexander Snead is still Reed Snead.

Send Places to Mobile Devices in Google Maps

by Alex Chitu

Google Maps now lets you send a place from the desktop site to the mobile app for iOS. You first need to open Google Maps for iOS, go to the Settings, tap Notifications, enable "Sent from desktop Maps" and tap OK to allow Google Maps to send notifications. "Make sure you're signed in to Google Maps with the same account across your computer and mobile devices with the latest version of Maps for mobile installed," informs Google. Then you can search for a place in desktop Google Maps, click "send to device", pick the iOS device and you'll get a notification on your device. If you miss a notification, you can find in the "Recent notifications" section from the Settings.

Some similar features are available for Android from the desktop Google Search site. You can send directions, notes and even set an alarm. Unfortunately, "send to device" is not available in Google Maps for Android yet.

Mom Reviews Teen Daughter’s Crop Top With Help From The Family Cat

by Nicole Wakelin

c1

Parents often disapprove of the apparel choices of their kids. One mom took things to a whole new level when her 16-year-old daughter ordered a crocheted crop top on Amazon. It was so small and revealing that she used a picture of the family cat in her scathing review. One size fits all indeed.

See the review after the break…

goTenna Off-Grid Signal Generator

Dan Jones

This might be good when camping somewhere remotely.

To keep it short, I guess you could say goTennas turn smartphones into really powerful walkie-talkies. Except more like walkie-texties. The self-contained signal generators require no cell towers, WiFi connectivity, or satellites to give their connected phones the power of text and GPS location sharing when off-grid, at crowded events, or during emergencies. goTenna works even when its paired devices are in Airplane Mode and, with its end-to-end encryption, can also be used to maintain privacy when signals are available.

Like walkie-talkies, all parties communicating via goTenna must be carrying the device. Usage range varies depending on the terrain and elevation, but is generally solid from 1 to 6 miles, with a theoretical maximum of 50 miles in ideal conditions. To use a goTenna, users must first pair it with their Android or iOS smartphones (via Bluetooth-LE) and then use the goTenna app to type out texts or share a location. Transmission is possible to a single person, multiple parties, or to all goTenna users within range. Once the "Send" button is hit, the data travels to the goTenna, which then shoots out long-range VHF radio waves to the intended recipients' goTennas and, finally, to their goTenna apps.

goTenna must be within around 20' of the connected phone to receive and transmit, and supports text messages of up to 160 characters. When a GPS location is shared, it appears on detailed offline maps on the recipients' goTenna app. Voice and images are not currently included in the transmission system.

At printing, goTennas were available for pre-order at a reduced introductory price, with shipment expected in Summer 2015. The signal generators are sold in twos, and each pair also includes 2 micro-USB charging cables. More questions? Check out goTenna's extensive FAQ page and you'll likely find your answer.

Airwheel Self-Balancing Electric Unicycle

Similar to the Hovertrax, but taking Team Circle over Team Straight Line, the Airwheel is a self-balancing scooter that rides like a unicycle with a motor. And no seat. And without the sidekick bear in a tutu.

According to its Chinese developers, Airwheel combines aerospace attitude control theory, fuzzy software algorithms, and a gyroscope system to maintain its riders' balance as they lean forward and backward. I'm sure you can still crash it or spontaneously fall over going at a slow, easy pace, but the Airwheel tech endeavors to make this outcome far less likely. (The transporter also has a built-in safety feature wherein if the wheel tilts sideways at more than a 45-degree angle its control system activates side-tilt protection, which immediately stops the machine from running.)

During use, riders simply lean forward/backward to propel forward, accelerate, decelerate, and brake. The left-right balance motions are similar to those used when riding a bike. On-board gyroscopes and inertial monitoring respond to weight shifts by making constant slight corrections to the Airwheel motor speed and power.

At around 22 pounds, Airwheel is lightweight enough to carry on a bus or subway as a means of filling in the gaps in point-to-point commutes. The unicycle hybrid has a maximum speed of 11 mph, and a range of 14 miles. Charge time runs around 90 minutes. Airwheel packages also come with a pair of training wheels for new users to attach as they learn to ride.

The X3 Airwheel pictured here is one of around a dozen different models the company produces. Check out a few more of them here.

8-Person Island Raft

Dan Jones

I would love to get this and head down to the Guadalupe for an afternoon.

What is there to say about Tropical Tahiti's floating island raft fit for you and 7 of your favorite water-lovin', sun-soakin', float-happy, swimsuit-clad cats besides P-A-R-T-Y and O-R-G-Y?

Grab a couple 6-packs and a bottle of SPF 30--not the spray kind, please, I prefer to be rubbed down--and flop aboard this friendly sea monster of summer. The island raft floats up to 8 people in its contoured loungers and wading pool, plus keeps their drinks and snacks upright and icy cold in cup holders and built-in coolers. A boarding platform rounds out the raft's 221" x 119.5" surface area. Total weight capacity is 1,760 pounds. Buy today, start tomorrow, and you should have it inflated by August.
