Zookeepers Hilariously Recreating Chris Pratt's Jurassic World Raptor Pack Pose

Zookeepers Hilariously Recreating Chris Pratt's Jurassic World Raptor Pack Pose

LOL! An awesome new phenomena has been started by zookeeps and animal trainers all around the world thanks to that iconic scene in Jurassic World with Chris Pratt and his Raptor pack. Fans of the movie are recreating his pose with animals from walruses, chickens, rhinos and more, every corner of the animal kingdom is getting involved (just a reminder not to try this with dangerous animals unless you are a trained professional)...

Google announces reward program for finding exploits in Android

by Dima Aryeh

Google already rewards people for finding big security vulnerabilities in its services. Instead of suing or taking legal action against people who try to help like some other companies have done, Google rewards those people for assisting in making its services safer for everyone. Now Google will be doing the same for Android!

Security Rewards for Android will reward those who find vulnerabilities in the current Google Play Store devices, which are the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 (meaning the bugs will have to be in AOSP). Each step required to fix it will pay out. If you actually make patches, there’s extra reward for you. And finally, there will be rewards for researchers that can work around Android’s security features.

If you’re up for the challenge, take a look at the source link for more info! Maybe you’ll make some money and do all Android users good.

Microsoft’s Cortana arrives on Android this July as a beta

by Evan Selleck
Dan Jones

Interesting for people who mostly use Microsoft services, but prefer an Android phone.

Sometimes things change, like timetables. In May, when Microsoft officially announced that Cortana, its digital personal assistant, would be arriving on Android this year, the company also said the arrival would happen by the end of June.

Now, as revealed on Blogging Windows, the timeframe for the beta release has been bumped a bit. Now instead of late June, the arrival of Cortana on Android — even as a beta — will have to wait until sometime in July. That makes a bit more sense considering that Windows 10, which is equipped with Cortana, doesn’t launch until the end of that month, anyway.

Microsoft did share a bit more on the features Android users should expect to get their fingers on when Cortana launches, including the ability to set a reminder to do something at a specific time and get that notification on their Xbox One, too. Microsoft says Cortana’s functionality will carry over to other Windows-based devices, and the inclusion of Android as another instrument to access the features therein is a great bonus.

Do you plan on using Cortana when the feature launches?

Children of the Moon

Alabaster-skinned people born on a sun-scorched group of islands off Panama’s Caribbean coast are venerated as “Children of the Moon”. Albinos make up between 5 and 10 percent of the roughly 80,000 indigenous Gunas who live on the mainland of the Guna Yala region and its islands. With their sensitive skin and eyes, young Guna albinos must be shuttled to and from school, avoiding the baking heat, while they watch their friends play in the streets. International Albinism Awareness Day was June 13th. -- By Reuters

Google Payments

by Alex Chitu
Dan Jones

Why is Google constantly changing their payment platform?

Now that Google announced Android Pay, it's interesting to see what happens with Google Wallet. A Google+ post mentioned a few weeks ago that Google is building a new Google Wallet app that will "will allow anyone with a US debit card to send and receive money for free within minutes - even if the other person doesn't have the app".

There's also a help center for a service called Google Payments, which is supposed to be available at payments.google.com. Right now, this URL redirects to Google Wallet. "You can securely store payment information in your Google Account using Google Payments. You can use this payment information to make and track purchases on Google services," informs Google. The services that support Google Payments are Google Play, Google Drive, YouTube and Google Express.

Chrome's Dev Channel replaced Google Wallet references with Google Payments. For example, there's an autofill option that shows "addresses and credit cards from Google Payments". Here's a screenshot from Chrome Dev for Android:

What is Code?

by Chris Coyier

An epic piece by Paul Ford. I'll just pick one fun quote because why not.

There are 11 million professional software developers on earth, according to the research firm IDC. (An additional 7 million are hobbyists.) That's roughly the population of the greater Los Angeles metro area. Imagine all of L.A. programming. East Hollywood would be for Mac programmers, West L.A. for mobile, Beverly Hills for finance programmers, and all of Orange County for Windows.

What do you think front end developers would occupy? I can't tell if it's the shed in the back of the Chick-fil-a on Sunset Blvd or half the dang town.

All six Star Wars films at once

by Jason Kottke
Dan Jones

The way the opening syncs up is crazy.

All six films1 from the Star Wars series played at the same time, superimposed on top of each other.

Watch this while you can...I imagine it'll get taken down in a few hours/days.

  1. Until Disney decides to reboot episodes 1-3 in another 10 years, we are stuck with six Star Wars films in the canon. As Yoda once said, "Death is a natural part of life. Rejoice for those around you who transform into the Force."

With update, Google Maps can warn you if your destination will be closed when you arrive

by Alex Wagner

It’s always exciting when Google pushes updates to its apps that include new features, and right now it’s Maps that’s on the receiving end of some new feature-y goodness.

The latest version of Google Maps will tell you if the place that you’re navigating to will be closed by the time that you arrive. This feature could come in handy if you’re planning on heading to an unfamiliar store or restaurant, or even if you’re thinking about going somewhere across town but you’re unsure if you’ll be able to make it before closing time. When Google alerts you that a place may be closed when you arrive, you’re given options of starting the navigation anyway or canceling it.

googlemapsupdate

Additionally, this Google Maps update can show your car rental info when you search “my events” in the app. This info is pulled from your Gmail.

Overall this is a smallish update for Google Maps, but the new features that it does include are pretty noteworthy, so you should probably grab it soon. The update was waiting for me when I checked Google Play on my phone, so grab your device and get to updating!

Share Button Removed From Google Navigation Bar

by Alex Chitu
A few weeks ago, Google dropped the Google+ link from the navigation bar. It looks like Google also removed the share button from the navigation bar, so you can no longer use it to share photos, links or create events and polls in Google+. It's just another Google+ feature that's discontinued as Google+ is scaling back.

Here's the missing share panel:

Google launches Free App of the Week promo

by Alex Wagner
Dan Jones

Amazon has been doing a free App of the Day for a long time (before the original Kindle Fire even launched). I'm surprised it's taken Google this long to do something similar.

Google has held several big app sales in the past, but we’ve yet to see any sort of Free App of the Week promo like our iOS counterparts get. That’s changing today.

Google today launched a Free App of the Week promo in the new Family section of the Play Store. The current free app is Daniel Tiger Grr-ific Feelings from PBS Kids, which would normally set your back $2.99.

It’s unclear if this Free App of the Week deal will extend to the regular part of Google Play or if it’ll be limited to the Family section. Since the promo is called “Free App of the Week,” we should learn more next week when Google discounts another paid app. For now, you can hit up the link below to grab Daniel Tiger Grr-ific Feelings for free.

Derelict

by Jason Kottke

Derelict is a feature-length black & white film that splices about an hour of Alien and 90 minutes of Prometheus together into a single narrative.

'Derelict' is an editing project for academic purposes. 'Prometheus' wasn't exactly an Alien prequel, but this treats it as such by intercutting the events of Alien with Prometheus in a dual narrative structure. The goal was to assemble the material to emphasize the strengths of Prometheus as well as its ties to Alien.

Triple Divided Skillet

I understand the benefit of using a Triple Divided Skillet in theory, and maybe even under certain circumstances, such as preventing eggplant from touching anything I might consider eating. But definitely not in the way the stovetop pan is depicted in this photo. With the bacon separated from the eggs and potatoes like its fat is a disease to be quarantined as opposed to an elixir of joy and livelihood that should be infused into or smothered over every bite of food I put in my mouth. That's really bad advertising.

But if used more appropriately, the Triple Divided Skillet could serve the purpose Vicki Slack intended when she came up with the idea: save cooks space on the range and dirty dishes on the sink. The pan's 3 isolated sections enable cooking different foods or tastes simultaneously, and without dirtying multiple dishes. I can fry a brat, simmer my creamed corn, and heat up my chocolate Jell-O Pudding Cup all at once. And I bet even eat them right out of the skillet if I want. Which I do.

Triple Divided Skillets have a non-stick coating and "no annoying corners" for easy cleaning. They come in 8", 10", and 12" sizes.

Frames per Second

by Steve Napierski
Dan Jones

I was doubtful someone could actually notice the difference between 30 and 60, but this definitely shows the difference.

I'm not sure what the threshold is, though. At some point, it won't make a difference.

Frames per Second This is memorizingly cool. Makes me long for a television with a higher refresh rate even more.

Side note, am I the only one who thinks that big Hollywood blockbuster movies at a higher frame rate makes them look cheaper? I remember when I saw The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey at 48fps and thought it looked like someone filmed it with their handycam. The sets felt cheaper and everything was just less...impressive.

Now video games, on the other hand, at higher frame rates make the experience even better. I remember watching a video on Gamespot recently about 4K gaming. That was cool and all, but it was when they discussed how the overclocked frame rate changed the gaming experience that caught my attention.

Long live higher frame rates...except for in traditional animation, because that's just expecting too damn much.
