Cannabis Killer Candle - Weed Odor Remover

While weed itself has been pretty well documented to be more of a health booster than a killer, I can't say as much for its aroma. Not always the ideal scent in which to douse your house, particularly when it lingers in the curtains and couch cushions, or rats you out when the police or your mom come over to visit. The Cannabis Killer Candle is a mason jar of soy-blended wax treated with natural odor removers. It has been designed not just to mask, but to eradicate the smell of stanky weed. Light 'er up alongside your own bowl, joint, or vaporizer, and the candle will emit a light, unobtrusive fragrance as its army of canna-bolishers fight back the intruding scent of funk.

The 12-ounce Cannabis Killer Candle will burn for up to 90 hours. Maker Beamer Candle Co. recommends lighting and keeping it lit before, during, and for a while after smoking. For those living in multi-family buildings, cover the door and open the window while weed and candle are ablaze, and your neighbors and landlord will never be the wiser.

Practical Women's Superhero Costume Redesigns

Practical Women's Superhero Costume Redesigns

Artist Lord Ingvard is working on this badass series of more practical and functional redesigns for female superhero costumes! Here's what the artist had to say about the concept...

"I love comics and superheroes as much as the next nerd, but the women?s costumes?sweet mother of Moses!?the COSTUMES. At the very least, highly impractical. And at worst, incredibly sexist. I mean, EXTREMELY so. Honestly, I don?t know why women haven?t been a lot more angry and vocal about this kind of thing over the years. Like ?Ferguson riot? angry. Don?t get me wrong, I believe that expressing one?s sexuality is a natural, healthy thing, and certainly not something to be censured or shamed, but holly hammer of Thor, there?s a time and a place for everything!

That being said, I just had to take a shot at addressing the most obvious problems. Now, I am not by any means an experienced or accomplished character designer. I am not suggesting these costume re-designs are ideal, or even very good. My main goal was to at least TRY to approach the subject of female superheroes with the degree of logic, equality, and respect they?and their readers?deserve."

LG Band Play is an Android 5.1 phone that wants to improve your mobile listening experience

by Alex Wagner

Features like screens and cameras are ones that smartphone manufacturers typically like to focus on with their devices, but sound isn’t a feature that we hear about often. That’s not the case with LG’s new phone, though.

The LG Band Play is all about offering quality sound. The Android 5.1 phone includes 1 watt speakers that LG says will offer richer and more clear sound, and there’s also a pair of premium earphones for those times that you aren’t able to pump sound out of the Band Play’s beefed up speaker.

LG’s also included a Focus Mode for the times that you may not want any sound at all. As its name suggests, Focus Mode will help you to focus on the task at hand by disabling calls and data. If someone tries to reach you while you’re focused, the LG Band Play will automatically send them a rejection message.

lgbandplayannouncement

When it comes to the rest of its spec list, the LG Band Play is packing a 5-inch 1280×720 display, quad-core Snapdragon 410 processor, 13-megapixel rear camera with Laser Auto Focus, and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera with a wide angle lens. Powering the Band Play is 2GB of RAM and a removable 2300mAh battery, and there’s 16GB of storage as well as a microSD slot for holding all of your media.

Obviously we can’t make any judgments about the quality of the LG Band Play’s 1W speaker or premium earphones without trying them out for ourselves, but it’s interesting to see a company create a smartphone with such a focus on sound. Unfortunately, we may never get to go ears-on with the Band Play, as LG’s announcement only mentions a release in South Korea. It’ll arrive there later this week for 394,800 South Korean Won ($355 USD).

Add Google Drive Files to Google Calendar Events

by Alex Chitu
Dan Jones

I didn't even know this was a thing. Pretty cool, though.

The latest version of the Google Calendar app for iOS brings a few useful features, catching up with the Android app.

You can now add Google Drive files to calendar events in the iOS app, as well as the desktop Google Calendar site. This feature was already available in the Android app since February and in Google Calendar Labs since 2009. "Event attachments" graduated from Labs and it's now available for everyone (including developers).

If a Drive file isn't shared with all the guests, you'll see a prompt and you can change how the file is shared.

Here's a screenshot from the desktop site (the feature may not seem new if you've used the Event Attachments feature from Google Calendar Labs):

Another feature already available in the Android app is the 7-day view, which lets you see more events at a glance. You can now switch to the 7-day view in the iOS app and customize your calendar with week numbers in the settings.

Google takes advantages of the improved notification features from iOS8 and adds interactive notifications for events, so you can email guests or view the map without having to open Google Calendar first.

Google Play Music introduces free tier, available on the web and soon on Android and iOS

by Sean Riley
Dan Jones

Google Play Music's basic service has always been free. But it looks like "All Access" has dropped the name, and is now a core part of the service, rather than an add-on (with a free tier).

With the launch of Apple Music just one week away (of course, not for Android users yet), Google has a major music announcement of its own.

Google Play Music in the U.S. will now offer a free ad-supported tier that is accessible today on the web and will be supported by the Android and iOS apps later this week. The free service is decidedly more limited than the standard app, as it won’t allow you to select a specific track or album to play, but instead groups everything into “stations.” You can pick your favorite artist, album, or track and it will generate a station of similar music, but it will be pulling from a variety of sources.

If you check out the ad below, they are pushing stations that they have curated for a certain vibe. This will be familiar to current subscribers as it is a section in the current app and Google offers some samples in their blog post like “Brand New Music,” “Boosting Your Energy,” “Having Fun at Work,” “Entering Beast Mode,” and “Bedtime.” The idea is that you can quickly jump in and find something that matches your mood without having to think about it too much.

I’ve been listening to the free tier while writing this post and am nine songs in since the initial ad that ran at launch, so I’m not exactly certain how frequently you can expect to be interrupted by ads yet, but I’ll update when I hit that mark. Update: Over 45 minutes in I had to step away from my computer for about 15 minutes so it is possible the ad played in that time, but I still haven’t heard one. I’m now wondering if the audio ads are tied to the apps and the web interface relies on the visual ads that are present. I did hit a limit on skipping songs at six, presumably that is refreshed every hour.

Google Play Music was initially available at $7.99 a month for early adopters, but settled into the familiar $9.99 a month for standard pricing since then. While there have been ample opportunities for free trials, the price hasn’t wavered.

Beyond the inability to play the exact content that you want, the free version of Google Play Music also lacks the ability to play music offline, create playlists, and of course the newer “ad-free, offline and background features for music videos on YouTube.” What you can still do with the free tier is store up to 50,000 of your own songs to play back as you like.

Google’s plans to unveil a free tier would explain why they didn’t have luck securing the latest Taylor Swift album, 1989, that has caused Apple so much consternation this week.

While there are certainly limitations to the free tier I have no doubt that it will bring additional attention to Google Play Music and presumably Google is hoping delivers some new customers before the fall.

Cup Holder Power Inverter with USB Port

Car cup holder space may be precious, but I can think of at least 3 times I would have gladly traded my 20-ounce quad Caramocha for a phone that didn't die in the middle of navigating me the hell out of downtown Portland. Whether you opt to sacrifice a console slot permanently, or just haul it out in times of need, Rally's cup holder power inverter can be, at best, a lifesaver, and at worst, a swell convenience on the road.

The unit is fuse-protected and fitted with a pair of 110-volt outlets, plus one more 12-volt outlet to increase powering flexibility. It also contains integrated iPod charging circuitry and a USB port compatible with cell phones, digital cameras, MP3 players, etc. A power on-off switch, short circuit protection, ground fault interrupter circuit, low battery alarm and auto shut down feature, overload protection, high and low voltage protection, and cooling fan look out for user and device safety during operation.

OnePlus 2 will feature USB Type-C port

by Sean Riley

Prepare for weeks, or possibly months, of OnePlus slowly letting out information on the OnePlus 2, just as it did with the One last year.

Today the company took to its various social media accounts to announce that the OnePlus 2 will use a USB Type-C port. This is the second spec released, following the announcement last week that the phone will be running a Snapdragon 810.

This feature will certainly prove a less contentious addition to the phone than the Snapdragon 810, which rightly or wrongly is still fighting an uphill battle regarding overheating. The one major downside of USB Type-C for most people is going to be the need to replace existing stockpiles of microUSB cables. The new reversible cables support faster charging and data transfer along with the ability to output 4K video.

With Google highlighting support for USB Type-C in Android M at I/O this year and OnePlus seeking to maintain its image as a purveyor of cutting edge hardware, particularly in light of an implied price bump from last year’s model, this is a welcome — if not particularly surprising — revelation.

I’m guessing the mere addition of USB Type-C isn’t going to be instantly swaying anyone into the OnePlus 2 camp, but as the device continues to take shape, are you still considering it? PR blunders aside, OnePlus is still likely to bring the OnePlus 2 in at a somewhat significant price advantage versus the other flagships this year. Is that enough to keep your interest?

Photographer Captures Tiny Lightning Storms with a Mini Tesla Coil

by Michael Zhang

DSC_5395

A violet ray is an antique electrotherapy medical device invented by Nikola Tesla that’s essentially a portable tesla coil. Altdorf, Germany-based photographer Marc Simon Frei purchased a unit from 1920 on eBay and customized it for experiments with photographing electricity at home.

Frei generated electrical discharges in various ways and forms, and then captured them using a Nikon Df, a macro extension tube, and a Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lens.

“Don’t try this at home,” Frei says, “the high frequency voltage could damage your equipment.” Bringing his camera close to the apparatus also caused his LCD screen to flicker.

Frei has also experimented with creating miniature lightning at home using some stuffing taken from the guts of a teddy bear as clouds. “I wanted to create a private thunderstorm at home,” he tells us.
