If you’ve been waiting for the Play Store to get an affiliate program, you’re in luck. It seems that Google is working on one with Performance Horizon Group, who’s supported Apple’s affiliate program since 2013.

When 9to5Google reached out to the company, it responded with a Google email address for the new Google Play affiliate program, as well as referring to it by name, though Google would not confirm its existence. It’s likely in its infancy, so no real information can be given as it may change anytime.

This should be very good for developers and other users, though the source says the program will initially only cover music and movies. Eventually it will reach all other content, though, and I think apps will be the most cared for out of all the products sold on Google Play. Devices may also be supported someday! But again, things are still up in the air for now.

Susan Kare, who famously designed the original icons for the Apple Macintosh, has teamed up with Areaware to offer real decks of cards with her artwork from Windows 3.0's version of Solitaire. Nice example of defictionalization. They're currently sold out but I'm hoping they restock so I can order a deck. (via subtraction)

Update: Areaware tells me that the cards aren't out of stock, they are just not in stock yet. So don't worry...they haven't sold out or anything.

I'm not sure if this is a new feature, but I noticed that Google indexes images from PDF files. Google adds "[PDF]" next to the title of the page and offers a single option: "view PDF", since it can't link to an image from a PDF file.

My ex-girlfriend Karen doesn't need a Flexi Freeze cooling vest because the ice in her heart is strong enough to chill her entire chest cavity, but if you do a lot of manual labor, have to wear a heavy costume, or are simply a warm-hearted person who tends to run hot, I'd definitely recommend packing ice cubes in a Flexi Freeze over turning into a stone cold bitch. The personal cooling device distributes 96 ice cubes amongst 3 removable, re-freezable ice panels, each of which secure inside the vest with Velcro. Supplemental panels are also sold separately to avoid downtime between cubes melting and freezing again.

1) Victor Mair at the Log posts about Kongish Daily, a Facebook page whose motto is “Hong Kong people speak Hong Kong English”; both post and comments are full of interesting material. Mair says:

I suppose that some might wish to refer to Kongish as a topolect of Chinglish. In truth, though, Kongish is more coherent and integral than Chinglish. Chinglish is more amorphous and doesn’t really have any rules. Everything in Chinglish is pretty much ad hoc and spontaneous (anything goes), whereas Kongish — because Hong Kongers have been developing it for decades and are apt to actually exchange whole sentences and even series of sentences in it — has a body of mutually agreed upon usages and a higher degree of intelligibility for its own speakers. In this sense, it resembles Singlish (Singaporean English) more than Chinglish. Perhaps we may say that Kongish and Singlish are both lects of English, and that Chinglish is a work that is forever in progress.

2) And speaking of Singlish, we’ve discussed it before, but it’s worth linking to Tessa Wong’s BBC News Magazine piece about it, which has some great examples and a quiz to see if you can decode such sentences as “Wah this durian so shiok, best lah!” (Thanks go to Trevor and Eric for the link.)
