Glowing Steampunk Pocket Watches Designed By A Disney Imagineer

by Rielly

steampunk-watch-starling-main

Disney Imagineer Terri Hardin along with Silicon Valley inventor Frank Cohen have created a whimsical collection of vintage pocket watches that glow in brilliant colors. Starling pocket watches are available in six intricate designs with a calming light show that illuminates the time:

“These remarkable time pieces are the tangible embodiment of intangible concepts. They illuminate with your touch, the Chillovean lights dance about as if to whisper the secrets it holds to its owner. Chillovean lights feature multitudes of different random color arrangements, more than you can see in a lifetime. This beautiful piece of fantasy jewelry is a wonderful family heirloom and an amazing unique gift”

The pocket watch collection is also part of a six chapter fantasy story that follows three time traveling characters as they unlock great powers with each timepiece. When you register on the Starling website, a new chapter is sent every week, beautifully illustrated in bas relief sculptures.

Take closer look at the watches (including a video) after the break…

How To Enable Facebook Push Notifications Through Chrome

by Joey-Elijah Sneddon
Facebook Notifications on Chrome

You can get Facebook Notifications through Chrome

In this short post we are going to show you how you can enable Facebook notifications on Chrome – both on Android and on the desktop.

You won’t need to add extensions, unearth a hidden setting or use a third-party service,

All you need is the Google Chrome browser on Android, Chrome OS, or a regular desktop.

First, a little recap.

Chrome Push Notifications Will App-ify The Web

Introduced to Google Chrome earlier this year is support for a new Push Notifications API. This feature allows websites that you give permission to the ability to send you notifications and alerts – even when the website isn’t open in a tab.

Web Push works hand-in-hand with other cool features like Service Workers and Web Manifests to help ‘app-ify’ websites on mobile and desktops.

push notifications supported by other sites

Facebook is among the first sites to add support for the feature (Vice News, eBay and Product Hunt are also among those taking advantage), keeping you up to speed with comments, replies and mentions.

Now for the caveat.

Facebook only supports web push notifications on the mobile version of its website. This is not an issue on Android; the Facebook mobile site is a leaner way to use the social network without the storage bloat and data demands of the full Android app.

Desktop users can benefit from Facebook’s support of the web push API standard to get alerts free of the need to keep the site open in a browser tab but clicking these notifications will open the mobile version of the website and not the version most are familiar with.

But even this has it’s pluses.

On my aged Samsung Series 5 (!) Chromebook I added the mobile version of Facebook (m.facebook.com) to my Chrome app shelf because a) it’s more ‘app-y’ b) it loads faster and c) I can “lock” it in the Chrome OS Sidebar.

This gives me a handy way to keep tabs while working on other stuff, like this post.

Facebook Touch in Chrome OS Sidebar

Keeping Facebook open all the time is not hugely practical. So I opted to turn on desktop notifications for Facebook through Chrome. This way I keep on top of pointless pressing updates but without the need to keep checking the site itself.

Screenshot 2015-10-02 at 17.49.59

Clicking on a web push toast from Facebook opens the corresponding page in the mobile version of Facebook in a new tab (or, if you’ve added the website to your app shelf like I have, in a separate window).

I will caution now that on the desktop iteration notifications sometimes never arrive – so don’t rely on this solely.

How To Enable Facebook Notifications in Chrome

Tell Facebook You Want Them

First things first: you may need to enable Mobile Notifications on the Facebook website by going to Facebook > Settings > Notification Settings > Mobile.

This page also lets you decide which notifications you want to receive alerts for and turn off the notification you don’t want to receive.

Android Instructions:

To enable Facebook notifications on Chrome for Android follow these simple steps:

  1. Visit the Facebook website in Chrome for Android
  2. Agree to ‘Allow Notifications’ when prompted

To disable/turn off web push notifications in Chrome for Android:

  1. Go to Chrome > Settings > Site Settings
  2. Select ‘Notifications’
  3. Under ‘Allowed’ section tap ‘Facebook’
  4. Under ‘Permissions’ tap ‘Notifications’
  5. Select ‘Block’

Desktop Instructions:

Enable 'em

Enable ’em

To enable Facebook Notifications in desktop Chrome or on Chrome OS:

  1. Visit m.facebook.com in a new tab
  2. Agree to the ‘show notifications’ prompt

To disable/turn off web push notifications in desktop Chrome or on Chrome OS:

  1. Open Chrome notification center
  2. Click on the ‘cog’ icon
  3. Locate ‘m.facebook.com:433’ in the list
  4. Uncheck the box beside it

On desktop Chrome you’ll receive notification toasts infrequently through the Chrome notification centre.

On Android notification appear in the notification shade. Alerts are denoted by a ‘bell’ icon in the status bar (this will shortly be changed to a Chrome icon).

Amazon ending sales of the Chromecast, all listings will be gone by October 29th

by Sean Riley
Dan Jones

Not cool Amazon

Amazon is taking the streaming media battle to a new level at the end of this month by banning sales of the Chromecast and Apple TV. In an email to marketplace sellers carrying either device, Amazon indicated that new listings will not be allowed and all current inventory unsold by October 29th will be removed.

Amazon offered this explanation for the move, “Over the last three years, Prime Video has become an important part of Prime….It’s important that the streaming media players we sell interact well with Prime Video in order to avoid customer confusion.”

That’s one way to phrase it. The other way would be to say that Amazon has refused to add Chromecast support to their Prime Video app and refused to create a Prime Video app for Apple TV. Both of these tasks are well within their power and minimally difficult considering they have somehow managed to offer apps for both Android and iOS.

Roku, Xbox and Playstation all gain reprieve from the ban as they do work with Amazon Prime Video, which again is entirely within Amazon’s control.

It’s certainly an interesting development in the increasingly competitive streaming media market. With all three companies releasing new hardware this fall, apparently Amazon decided it was best to thin the competition ahead of the busy holiday shopping season.

SKEYE Pico Drone

We've seen SKEYE's Mini. And then its Nano. Now to complete the family: the runt of the litter, Pico. At least I hope this is it for the SKEYEs. I don't know about you, but SKEYE Embryo is where I draw the line.

Pico, it seems, was made for indoor performance, for buzzing around the office and your girlfriend's head when she's trying to watch some awful TV show about women trying on wedding dresses. At just 0.25 ounces and 0.87" long x 0.87" wide x 0.75" tall, Pico is quick and nimble as a hummingbird. It can take off from the tip of your finger, or find an instant hover after being tossed in the air. In flight, the baby drone can still do all of the same flips, zips, and dives its big brothers can; 6-axis controlled acrobatics are in the SKEYE genetic code.

The Pico also features built-in LED lights for night flights. When not in use, the quadcopter stores inside its own controller. Pico charge time is 30 minutes for 7 to 8 minutes of flying time. RC distance is up to 50 meters. The package includes an orange Pico, USB charging cable, 4 x replacement rotor blades, and a 4-channel, 2.4Ghz transmitter. Get your for 28% off for a limited time from Dude Exclusives.

Google announces the Huawei Nexus 6P

by Dustin Earley

It’s here! Google has just unveiled the followup to the relatively high-end Nexus 6 from Motorola, the Nexus 6P from Huawei. The Nexus 6P follows in the Nexus 6′s footsteps by introducing the latest version of Android in a premium, flagship device.

The Nexus 6P is a plain, aluminum slate, perfect for letting Marshmallow really shine. It comes with a 5.7-inch 1440p AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 810, 32/64/128(!)GB of storage, front-facing speakers, 12.3-megapixel camera with Sony sensor and laser autofocus, 8-megapixel front-facing camera, USB Type C with quick charging, a fingerprint scanner and a 3450mAh battery.

Google is touting the camera as being a big step-up from previous Nexus devices, and sample images look like those claims might not be totally empty. It has larger 1.55-micron pixels which should make give you better results in low light situations. The Nexus 6P also has 4k video recording, something that has become an industry standard in 2015, and slow motion video.

The fingerprint scanner on the Nexus 6P is located on the rear of the device, and is being called Nexus Imprint. Nexus Imprint will work where most fingerprint scanners do, including as a security measure for Android Pay. One unique feature of Nexus Imprint is that the more you use it, the better it will get. Your Nexus 6P will be constantly updating fingerprint data to capture your print from more angles.

Google has borrowed a page from Motorola’s book with the Nexus 6P, including something it’s calling Android Sensor Hub. There is essentially a dedicated sensor processor, which allows for things like gesture recognition. The Nexus 6P even has something like Moto Display, allowing you to act on notifications from the lock screen, while still saving battery.

Of course the biggest benefit to owning a Nexus is having software controlled by Google and Google only. The Nexus 6P launches with Marshmallow which brings with it some nice design and usability changes over Lollipop like faster access to voice actions, faster scrolling, Google Now on Tap, dynamic shortcuts in your app drawer based on usage habits and simplified permissions.

The Huawei manufactured Nexus 6P will start at $499 in three different shades of gray. It will be available for preorder starting today on the Google Store, and will work on “major carriers” across the US. There’s no official release date, but Google is saying to expect the device “near the end of October.”

Marshmallow is coming to older Nexus devices next week

by Dustin Earley
Dan Jones

Woohoo!

The new Nexus 5X and 6P won’t be coming out until sometime in late October. But what about Marshmallow for older Nexus devices? Thankfully, that’s coming a lot sooner.

Announced at Google’s Nexus event, Marshmallow, Android 6.0, will be coming to the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 7 (2013), Nexus 9, and Nexus Player next week. Of course when it will be released and when an OTA update will hit your handset are two different things, but factory images will be available at that time if you simply cannot wait. Either way, if you are using an older Nexus device, the wait for Marshmallow won’t be long now.

Google’s new Chromecast has better WiFi and a new design

by Dustin Earley

The original Chromecast was great for what it was. It allowed you to serve up HD content to your TV from your phone or computer, all for just $35. But it was lacking in some areas, areas that have now been fixed with the announcement of the second gen Chromecast.

The new Chromecast is functionally identical to the original, but it has updated internals and a new design. The new Chromecast now includes three antennas for improved connectivity, and access to 802.11ac and 5ghz WiFi. It’s also a round circle now with the HDMI connector attached to a short cord. This will allow the Chromecast to hang away from your TV, giving your more room to work with in what is most likely a crowded place for most people. Unfortunately, the new Chromecast still doesn’t have 4k support.

Google also announced a Chromecast Audio dongle today, which works with any 3.5mm speakers. It’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like: a Chromecast made just for streaming audio to older speakers. Chrome cast Audio will work with Google Music and apps like Spotify(!) and Pandora.

Both the second gen Chromecast and Chromecast Audio will sell for $35.

Google’s Next Pixel Won’t Run Chrome OS

by Joey-Elijah Sneddon
Dan Jones

Very interesting. I might consider that.

PixelThe next Chromebook Pixel might not actually be a Chromebook at all.

It’s claimed Google is to launch a new Pixel device in the coming months. It will be a 10.2-inch Android tablet with detachable keyboard and marketed as the ‘Pixel C’.

Like the first and second-gen Google Chromebook Pixel the new Pixel tablet is said to be designed by Google and is made from high-grade parts (with a high-end price tag to suit).

News of the Pixel C comes by way of Android Police and backs up a snippet of news we reported on earlier this year.

In May Digitimes claimed Google was working on two new convertible Chromebooks under the ‘Pixel’ brand. One of these is a 10-inch tablet with a detachable keyboard, the other was  a 12-inch iPad Pro rival based on a Nvidia Tegra chipset.

The Android-based Pixel C tablet specs shared by Android Police match up nicely with that May rumour – only this new tablet is expected to run Android 6.0 ‘Marshmallow’ and not Chrome OS.

But was this always the plan? Here’s where things get confusing.

Ryu – The Chrome OS Tablet That Isn’t

From the 10.2-inch display with eye-popping screen resolution to the NVIDIA Tegra SoC inside, use of USB Type-C, and use of a light-bar on the reverse of the lid – these specs match an as-yet unannounced Chromebook.

The board name for that in-development Chromebook? ‘Ryu’.

The codename for this new Pixel C Android tablet? ‘Ryu’.

So did the Pixel C start out as a Chrome OS tablet only to later be retooled to an Android device? Quite possibly!

There’s nothing to preclude the same device from being sold with Chrome OS at a later date (if it does share the same ‘Ryu’ board as the presumed Chromebook).

We’ll find out in due course, of course.  Either way, it’s an interesting development for the once Chrome exclusive Pixel line.

Ako Dice

Ako Dice are what happens when an architect gets his hands on the gaming world. Kacha took his architecture background to product design with a trio of Kickstarter campaigns. Here you see his latest and most successful foray, Ako Dice.

Ako Dice represent Kacha's aesthetic overhaul of a game piece dating back at least 5,000 years. Now that dice are mainstays and collector's items in gaming life, Kacha thought his techno-futuristic redesign might be well received. 6,564 Kickstarter backers suggest he was correct. Ako Dice are made of aluminum and finished either naturally or in a selection of anodized colors. In place of the traditional embedded pips, these dice feature custom engraved lines to represent numbers 1 through 6. Each beveled side is also connected by a pip line to create links between the numbers.

While Kacha has completed Ako Dice distribution to all Kickstarter backers, at printing he was still working on getting his own online store up and running. If you're interested in purchasing a pair, follow the link below and sign up to be notified when they are available.
