Google's Blogs Move to a Custom Domain

by Alex Chitu
Dan Jones

Also, now you can easily find them by googling "site:googleblog.com"

Last week, John Mueller announced that Google is moving all of its blogs to a custom domain: googleblog.com. For example, Gmail's blog has a new URL: gmail.googleblog.com, which replaces gmailblog.blogspot.com.

"Google is moving its blogs to a new domain to help people recognize when they're reading an official blog from Google. These changes will roll out to all of Google's blogs over time. The previous address will redirect to the new domain, so your bookmarks and links will continue to work."

A long time ago, many people thought that this is an official Google blog and I had to keep explaining that the blog is not affiliated with Google. I added more and more disclaimers, but that's still not enough for everyone. Now that Google's blogs move from blogspot.com to googleblog.com, it's much easier to tell things apart.

The Chart of Cosmic Exploration

We've come a long way since 1959. Pop Chart Lab's stellar Chart of Cosmic Exploration takes us through the history of man's, and man-made machines', adventures in space. The poster lays out the solar system across the upper portion of its 39" spread, and then traces in color-coded paths the trajectories of every orbiter, lander, rover, flyby, and impactor to ever slip the surly bonds of Earth's orbit and successfully complete its mission. From the Luna 2 to 2015's DSCOVR, and over 100 in total.

Along the lower half of the chart you can check out hand-illustrated renderings of each spacecraft that made the trek, categorized by planet explored, type of vessel, name and number of vessel, organization / country of origin, and year of launch.

Metronome Card in Google Search

by Alex Chitu

Google shows a special card when you search for [metronome]. The default beat rate is 120 BPM, but you can change the value from 40 to 208 BPM by pressing the "+" and "-" buttons. Google plays a sound, shows an animation and changes the color of the UI, depending on the selected value.

According to Wikipedia, "a metronome is any device that produces regular, metrical ticks (beats, clicks) — settable in beats per minute. (...) The metronome is used by musicians to help keep a steady tempo as they play, or to work on issues of irregular timing, or to help internalize a clear sense of timing and tempo."

Updating the smartphone user-agent of Googlebot

by Gary Illyes
As technology on the web changes, we periodically update the user-agents we use for Googlebot. Next month, we will be updating the smartphone user-agent of Googlebot:

Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 6.0.1; Nexus 5X Build/MMB29P) AppleWebKit/537.36 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/41.0.2272.96 Mobile Safari/537.36 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)
(Googlebot smartphone user-agent starting from April 18, 2016)

Today, we use the following smartphone user-agent for Googlebot:

Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 8_3 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/600.1.4 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/8.0 Mobile/12F70 Safari/600.1.4 (compatible; Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html)
(Current Googlebot smartphone user-agent)

We’re updating the user-agent string so that our renderer can better understand pages that use newer web technologies. Our renderer evolves over time and the user-agent string indicates that that it is becoming more similar to Chrome than Safari. To make sure your site can be viewed properly by a wide range of users and browsers, we recommend using feature detection and progressive enhancement.

Our evaluation suggests that this user-agent change should have no effect on 99% of sites. The most common reason a site might be affected is if it specifically looks for a particular Googlebot user-agent string. User-agent sniffing for Googlebot is not recommended and is considered to be a form of cloaking. Googlebot should be treated like any other browser.

If you believe your site may be affected by this update, we recommend checking your site with the Fetch and Render Tool in Search Console (which has been updated with the new user-agent string) or by changing the user-agent string in Developer Tools in your browser (for example, via Chrome Device Mode). If you have any questions, we’re always happy to answer them in our Webmaster help forums.

Qwerkywriter - Wireless "Typewriter" Keyboard

QWERTY gets nostalgic. QWERTY gets clicky. QWERTY gets Qwerky. Click here and enter to win the Qwerkywriter, a typewriter-inspired wireless mechanical keyboard complete with vintage keycaps and a "clickety-clack" feel and sound. A $399 value from Qwerky Toys!

This giveaway is open to US residents only.

About the Qwerkywriter

We may worship the ease and efficiency of contemporary keyboards--I'd be working 18-hour days if it weren't for the Delete button and Crtl+Z--but you gotta admit, they lack the warmth and soul our parents' and grandparents' analog typewriters seemed to have. The Qwerkywriter seeks to bring back just a hint of yesterday--the audio-tactile connectedness and joy of use that make us nostalgic for typewriters--without sacrificing our modern-day typing amenities of hassle-free editing, digital saving, extensive font and layout options, and schlep-it-on-your-back portability.

The Qwerkywriter is an 83-key mechanical keyboard that looks and feels like an antique typewriter, but acts like a 21st-century technological wonder. It simulates the classics with throwback key caps that make "clicky" sounds during typing (listen to it fly here) and look like the ones Faulkner once used to weave the powerful tales of...all those books of his I haven't read. But the Qwerkywriter sends its letters to screen instead of paper, connecting wirelessly via Bluetooth to any compatible digital device (it even has an integrated tablet stand), and facilitating all of today's word processing functions we can no longer live without.

The Qwerkywriter pairs with iPhones, iPads, iMacs, MacPros, Macbooks, Android Tablets Devices, Windows Tablets, and any computer / tablet that has Bluetooth. Qwerkywriter features include:

  • Aluminum construction.
  • Built-in stand for holding tablets up to 10" wide and 5/8" thick.
  • Return Bar that defaults as ENTER, but also functions as a programmable key (up to 5 characters).
  • Rechargeable Lithium Ion battery via provided micro USB cable.
  • Up to 3 months of battery life per charge.

Qwerkywriter dimensions are 13" x 7" x 2.5". Weight is a little under 3 pounds.

Qwerkywriter Giveaway Entry Instructions

To register, click here and fill out the Qwerkywriter Giveaway entry form. Or, if you're already a member of DudeIWantThat.com, when the magic entry form button appears, just click it to enter.

The Qwerkywriter Giveaway entry period is open through 11:59 p.m. ET on March 20, 2016. Our drawn winner will be contacted by email within 48 hours of the entry period's conclusion, and will have 12 hours to respond and claim his/her prize. This LEGO Hulkbuster Is Over 8-Feet Tall

by Geek Girl Diva

12795322_666420453495908_2130610628191790222_nThis insane LEGO Hulkbuster statue is now on display at The Toy Store UK, and I’ll bet lots of kids (and adults) are falling over themselves to take a picture with it. It clocks in at over 8-feet tall, 7 1/2-feet wide and weighs over 2000 pounds.

This bad boy took over 940 hours of build time and is made up of over a million bricks.

biem Instant Stick Butter Sprayer

Whether you're looking to cut back on the butter or blanket your whole life in a dewy sheen of it, the forthcoming biem Butter Sprayer could be as revolutionary for your popcorn and toast as the Slotdog is for your wieners. Insert a full, solid stick of butter into this sweet kitchen gadget and seconds later it will emerge as a delicate mist o' flavor ready to coat your favorite foods, and nonstick-ify any pans that require nonstick-ification.

biem uses 100% real churned cow juice and hot air to generate its butter jet. That's it. No lab-made ingredients and no chemical propellants are necessary. The cylindrical vessel able to accomplish this culinary feat is (or will be--it's still undergoing final design tweaks) made of a silicone front and brushed stainless steel back. It will stand 10" tall, weigh 1-1/2 pounds, and use a pack of rechargeable batteries for heat and propulsion power. Additional features:

  • biem can spray any brand of stick butter.
  • The sprayer will not melt the whole stick of butter when you insert it, just the amount you need per use. It will also notify you when your stick is running low.
  • The biem heating mechanism warms butter only to 95 degrees, so it won't overheat or burn.
  • It will have a "no clog" nozzle design.
  • A smart on / off function employs an accelerometer to detect when you pick up the canister, and turns the biem on automatically.
  • You can store it on the countertop or in the fridge.

In addition to making butter application faster and easier, biem will also likely reduce the amount of butter you use, particularly when buttering pans for cooking and breads for grilled sandwiches. The health-conscious can enjoy butter more sparingly on vegetables, steaks, pasta, and pancakes too.

the biem Butter Sprayer seeks Kickstarter crowdfunding, and is available there for pre-order, through April 2, 2016.

Automatically Better

by Sarah Yoshimura

Artist's Note:

I... don't understand Windows 10. I'm really confused by it. I can't figure out all my settings, and it's just, dammit I'm getting frustrated by it. My Surface has gotten "better" because of it, but darn it, there are just some things I can't seem to access at all.

Then again, I rarely use my Surface now for work. Thank goodness. I'd be in a pickle if I had to you know, do everything on that tiny tablet-of-a-computer.

Writer's Note:

(God damn you daylight savings...I love you in fall, but hate you in spring! So sleepy...)

I don't use Windows (yet), but have heard enough bitching from PC users about Microsoft pushing Windows 10 really freaking hard this year, to the point that some, like Sarah, just woke up one day to find their computer had updated itself overnight. That's a pretty dick move, and I say that as a Mac user who is forced to ride Apple's relentless upgrade cycle. Despite the reported speed improvements to Windows 10, I'm sure there is a lot of people struggling to get important 3rd party software running on their newly-updated Windows 10 machines. I was actually considering getting a Windows PC later this year, but after this...maybe I'll consider Linux instead.

Ash Ketchum’s Pokémon

by Steve Napierski
Ash Ketchum's Pokémon According to Piika (this infographic's creator):

I used these statistics that were going around a while back, as well as my own calculations for all of Ash’s XY Pokémon. Please note that this only covers wins in official league, Frontier, and gym battles. Apologies if there are any mistakes (and that it’s bound to become outdated pretty soon)!

Okay?
