David Ortiz apologizes for outburst at official scorer

by Alex Skillin

After drawing the ire of Joe Torre, Ortiz apologized on Monday for his outburst at an official scorer last Wednesday.

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz apologized for his outburst at an official scorer last Wednesday, admitting he was frustrated about a scoring decision that saw a ground ball he hit off Joe Mauer's glove initially ruled an error.

Ortiz was immediately frustrated when the play was announced an error, even giving a thumbs down signal towards the press box where the official scorer sits at Fenway Park following the ruling.

After the game, Ortiz complained, "I thought people were supposed to have your back at home, and it never happens. It's always like that. I've been here for more than a decade, and the scorekeepers here are always horrible."

Ortiz's comments drew the ire of MLB executive Joe Torre, who rebuked him saying, "Official scorers have a job to do, and by their very nature, their decisions don't make everyone happy. But everyone in our game deserves respect. I hope that David will meet that standard going forward, because I don't share the same views that he expressed."

Torre's words led to an apology from Ortiz on Monday, who specifically expressed remorse to Torre and the official scorer, Bob Ellis. The official ruling on the play was also changed to a hit Monday afternoon.

Ortiz is batting .248/.349/.474 with 17 home runs this season for the Red Sox and leads the club in home runs, extra-base hits and slugging percentage.

It has not been made public whether Ortiz was fined for the incident, although it appears that all parties are ready to move on following the slugger's apology on Monday.

Paying 38 Studios debt took RI off S&P CreditWatch list, House speaker says

by Dave Tach

Paying 38 Studios debt took Rhode Island off of credit rating agency Standard & Poor's CreditWatch list, House Speaker Nicholas Mattiello said.

S&P removed Rhode Island from the list last Wednesday, Portsmouth Patch reports. S&P uses the list to "indicate a substantial likelihood of it taking a rating action within the next 90 days, or in response to events presenting significant uncertainty to the creditworthiness of an issuer," according to the agency.

"This affirmation from S&P shows that our decision was sound and will ensure protection of the state’s investments and reputation," Mattiello said. "When Majority Leader John DeSimone and I met with the ratings agency last month, there was a clear indication from Moody’s and from S&P that refusal to make the bond payment would result in a ratings downgrade."

Mattiello has been a vocal proponent of repaying the debt incurred from the state's failed $75 million loan guarantee to video game developer 38 Studios. The House Speaker met with representatives from S&P last month to discuss repayment.

"We need to pay to protect the credit rating of Rhode Island," Mattiello said at the time. "I am not going to put Rhode Island on the default list. The reputation of the state will not be harmed any further."

A study preformed by SJ Advisors and commissioned by The Rhode Island Department of Administration concluded in early May that not paying the debt could reduce the state's bond rating to junk status. Rhode Island made a $2.4 million payment on the debt just before the report was released.

Former Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling's 38 Studios declared bankruptcy in 2012. Since its failure, state lawmakers have also discussed defaulting on the debt. The newly appointed chairwoman of the Rhode Island House Committee on Oversight, Rep. Karen MacBeth, twice proposed legislation to prevent continuing payments.

You can follow along with the continuing story of 38 Studios and Rhode Island's response to its demise in Polygon's StoryStream.

Newswire: X-Men: The Last Stand’s Zak Penn is rewriting the Ready Player One adaptation

by Sam Barsanti

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

In a dystopian future where everyone plays video games and makes references to ‘80s pop-culture, only one man can be the best at video games and ‘80s pop-culture references. That’s what life is like in Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One, a novel that’s basically a love letter to stuff that geeks and nerds like. Also, we’re pretty sure we’re using the word “dystopia” incorrectly, because that doesn’t actually sound so bad.

Either way, a film version of Ready Player One has been in the works since before the book came out, and now—according to The Wrap—Warner Bros. has hired a guy with somewhat legitimate nerd cred to rewrite the script: Zak Penn. The co-creator of SyFy’s Alphas, Penn also wrote X-Men: The Last Stand and Elektra. Alright, so that’s not the most prestigious résumé, but he also has “story” credits ...

WOTC Posts a D&D Starter Set Unboxing Video

by newbiedm
firehose

wasn't impressed, but for $12 (even at my FLGS), eh

WOTC published an unboxing video today of its upcoming Starter Set box, and I have to say that at first glance, I’m impressed and hopeful that it’ll be a good product. Based on what I can see on the video, it looks like a high quality product (expected from a publisher like WOTC). Full disclosure: I’ve pre ordered one already, although I’m hoping to land a review copy anyway, but in the case I don’t, I’ve bought one to make sure I give it a thorough review here on my site. It’s time to start writing about D&D again.

I was not a fan of the 4e red box, and I’m hoping that this product really is a starter set suitable for new DMs to pick up the game and get rolling right away.

Anyway, here’s the video, and here’s a link to its Amazon’s pre-order page (in case you’d like to support the site a bit).

Little Girl Getting Kicked Out of KFC Was Reportedly a Huge Hoax

KFC donated $30,000 to the family of three-year-old Victoria Wilcher after they claimed an employee at a store in Jackson, Miss. asked them to leave because Victoria's scars—leftover from an attack by her grandfather's pit bulls—were scaring customers. But according to a new report in the Laurel Leader-Call, the whole thing was a hoax and never happened. http://gawker.com/kfc-apologizes...

Contemporary Art Week!

Wheel of Time Official and Unofficial Art

I think a lot of fans of Epic or High Fantasy tend to have a series that’s “their” series…the one the ends up setting the bar for the rest of their fandom adventures. For me, it was always Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time. I read the first book, The Eye of the World, sometime in 1991 and that was pretty much it for me.

Although it has plenty of flaws, it stands apart from a  lot of medieval fantasy settings in that it’s a loosely medieval-ish world, not an endless Europe that goes on and on for thousands of miles. There are very specific nations and cultures at work in the main setting continent (as well as the “other” continent), and there are also in-universe races and cultures associated with nations, with aspects of various  historical world fashions, social mores, myths, and even bric-a-brac chosen from a world setting, rather than creating a dichotomy of red-haired white people versus blonde-haired white people and other common fantasy tropes.

Although many of the characters can be read ambiguously in regard to appearance, Gallagher’s character designs are among my favorites, and generally faithful to the text descriptions.

On Diversity — XOXO Blog

by gguillotte
We want everyone to feel safe and comfortable at XOXO, and we try to cultivate an atmosphere of empathy and belonging. For the last two years, we’ve announced this policy on stage during the opening remarks. Last year, we needed to enforce it for the first time when a drunken attendee sexually harassed an XOXO volunteer. We took her report in private, tracked down the attendee, and permanently removed him from the festival after he confirmed the details. (If you’d like a third-party take on how we handle harassment, the volunteer that was harassed wrote about her experience in detail.) This year, we’ve gone one step further, and formalized it as policy. As with previous years, we’ll talk about it on-stage so everyone’s aware of our rules.

Drone seen peeping into Seattle woman's window; police investigating

firehose

the future is shit

Police were called to the downtown Seattle apartment complex on Sunday morning after she spied an unmanned aerial vehicle hovering outside the building. The woman said she was concerned the drone was looking into her apartment.

After calling police, an employee of her apartment building says he went outside and saw two men piloting the drone. They packed up their gear, which included a video camera, and drove off before police arrived. Authorities say they are checking for surveillance video that may help identify the men.
