Quarantine, an adorable little game of running a hospital, has launched! Seems like only yesterday that Quinns was squeaking about its design diaries over in the games news, and now it's on shelves worldwide. They grow up so fast!

This one's a game that Quinns really wants to like. But he's also the owner of a degree in Tough Love from Newcastle University. Will it meet his ever-soaring standards? Or will he toss it aside like so much medical waste?

Film: Great Job, Internet!: Arnold Schwarzenegger just wants Reddit to get along

by Kayla Reed

Arnold Schwarzenegger is the sanest person on reddit

Arnold Schwarzenegger won the hearts of Redditors with his Ask Me Anything session back in January, and seems to have taken a liking to the "front page of the Internet." GovSchwarzenegger has since maintained an active presence on the site, namely in /r/Fitness. He even did a second AMA just about working out. Fitness advice isn’t the only thing he has contributed, however.

Yesterday on the subreddit, somebody posted a link from the former governor/current Terminator’s website about the best cardio workout ever (which one can only assume is to stand up during commercials or something). And, because it's the Internet, an argument commenced that only Arnold could terminate. His comment was quite insightful, and could probably be applied to many an argument that takes place on the Internet. Also, kudos to LumberingOaf for his double gold response: “Come with me if you want to ...

Classic RPG The Lords of Midnight released for Windows PC

by Alexa Ray Corriea

Mike Singleton's 1984 fantasy role-playing game The Lords of Midnight is now available for Windows PC, according to the game's official website.

The downloadable PC version features high-resolution graphics, updates to the original's landscaping techniques, a new discovery map and mouse control. These features were implemented by developer Chris Wild, who assisted Singleton with development on the iOS version of the title prior to the designer's death in October of last year.

Players can purchase The Lords of Midnight directly through the game's website for $5.99 (£3.99, €4.49). The game is also available for Mac, iOS, Android, Kindle Fire and Blackberry Playbook and z10.

The Lords of Midnight was originally released in 1984 for the ZX Spectrum 8-bit personal computer, with Commodore 64 and Amstrad CPC versions following later that year. The game follows the adventure of four heroes — Luxor the Moonprince, Rorthron the Wise, Corleth the Fey and Morkin — on their journey to destroy the Witchking of Midnight, Doomdark. Players can obtain up to 28 additional lords for their army, and have the option to spend game time strategizing and recruiting these lords to wage open war, focusing on finding and destroying Doomdark's power source or both at once.

Now that even geeks don’t use email, holdouts like Janet Napolitano can declare victory

by Rachel Feltman
firehose

Overbey's new boss

Look ma, no laptop!

US secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano announced today that she’s stepping down to become president of the University of California. The former governor of Arizona will be the first woman to run the large UC system.

But what we really want to know is how Napolitano, who CNN reported last year doesn’t use email “at all,” manages to get anything done without it.

It’s not clear whether Napolitano just minimized her use of e-mail for professional and personal purposes while working for Homeland Security, or if she actually lived without it. And it is perhaps surprising that someone whose brief includes overseeing US cybersecurity efforts could do that job without access to email.

But Napolitano is not the only person in power who’s eschewed basic online communication. Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov reportedly avoids computers because “we have too much information and it’s really impossible to filter it.” Forbes several years ago compiled a list of celebrities who were off email at the time.

How do they all do it? When most of us are checking our email constantly on an increasing number of devices, can you really live without it entirely? Napolitano seems to have cheated, as her answer was frequent briefings by her staff (who we can probably assume were using email.)

But it’s actually getting increasingly easy to avoid email, with alternatives like Twitter for brief messages and instant messaging or Skype chats for longer ones. Long-term projects can be completed without messy back-and-forth communication with the use of shared documents online such as a Google Doc. And more personal chats can still take place on the phone or by text (or even in person.)

Some techies are now shunning email because of concerns about government surveillance of communications. And others see it as an inefficient use of time, citing studies to that effectIBM has a wave of employees joining the anti-email trend, increasingly relying on social media for chats both professional and personal. And in 2011 Atos, a European technology services company, announced plans to eliminate email in its ranks by 2014.

Are email’s days numbered? Maybe. But it’s only going to get harder to avoid all online communication, especially if you’ve got a company—or, you know, a country—to run.

I'm making it rain tickets to TrancePDX's David Lynch night, which is going down tomorrow night! I have two pairs of tickets for this giveaway. Email me by 3:30 pm today with the subject line "Fuck that Shit" and I'll pick a couple of rando winners. Free stuff!

The TrancePDX series is showing some cool films like The Warriors tonight, and The Crow and Enter the Dragon on Sunday night at the Mission. But it's tomorrow's screening of Blue Velvet and a new documentary about David Lynch's love of transcendental mediation that sounds like the pick of the series. Meditation, Creativity, Peace follows the director on a 16-country tour of speaking engagements as he talks about his films and meditation. Dude is really into trans med. But really, even if you have zero interest in woo-woo matters, It kinda doesn't matter what Lynch is talking about because the goofball is a delight to listen to even if he's just talking about the weather. So, yeah, this should be aces!

BERNETTA MILLER
Early Flight (107)

Bernetta Miller was born in Canton, Ohio on January 11, 1886. After becoming interested in flying, she enrolled for instruction at the Moisant Flying School at Hempstead Plains, Long Island, New York. On September 25, 1912, she received her license and then joined the Moisant International Aviators. In October 1912 she was sent to Washington, D.C. with the Moisant aviator Harold Kantner to assist in demonstration tests. There she became the first person to demonstrate a monoplane before U.S. government officials. On January 20, 1913, she attempted to establish a women’s altitude record at Garden City but the oil flow indicator in her plane broke, causing an emergency landing. Miller also took an active part in WWI, joining the Women’s Overseas Service League Infantry Division in France. She served first as an accountant and then went to the front as a canteen worker. She was awarded the Croix de Guerre and many American citations for her work. After WWI, she engaged in educational work on the staffs of Dickinson and Colby Colleges and the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton University.

A German artist may now potentially face criminal charges in Germany after he projected a huge image onto the walls of the United States Embassy in Berlin last Sunday.

The image was of fellow German Kim Dotcom, the embattled founder of Megaupload, along with the phrase “United Stasi of America,” referring to the secret police of former East Germany. Oliver Bienkowski videoed the event and set the video to a song that Dotcom had previously recorded, entitled “Mr. President," which includes lines like: “What about free speech, Mr. President?”

Although his light art performance only lasted for 30 seconds, German newspaper Der Tagespiegel (The Daily Mirror) reported this week that Oliver Bienkowski is now being investigated (Google Translate) by local authorities in Berlin.

Amazon One-Click Chrome Extension Snoops On SSL Traffic

by Soulskill

An anonymous reader writes "It turns out Amazon has its own sketchy method of snooping on all your browser traffic — even SSL traffic — through their one-click extension for Chrome. As designed, the extension reports every URL you visit, including HTTPS ones, to Amazon. It uses XSS to provide some of its functionality. It also reports contents of some website visits to Alexa. The Amazon extension has also been exploited to allow an attacker to gain access to SSL traffic on browsers that have it installed."

'Star Trek: Khan' Miniseries To Examine The Villiain's Origin

by Matt D. Wilson

Benekhan Montalbatch

His identity was a matter of speculation for months, but now that the release of Star Trek: Into Darkness is safely a couple months behind us, IDW is releasing a brand-new, six-issue miniseries to offer up the details of big bad Khan Noonien Singh’s origin. Writer Mike Johnson and artist Claudia Balboni will work with Roberto Orci, one of the screenwriters of the movie, to tie the series into the film.

“[Star Trek:Khan will add dimension and depth to this new iteration one of the most classic villains in all of Star Trek lore,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s chief creative officer and editor-in-chief.

The series will cover the Eugenics Wars, the conflict over selective breeding that led to Khan’s status as a world conqueror in the early 1990s (yes, the 1990s). At least, that’s according to the story of the classic-series Khan, who was played by Ricardo Montalban. Much of that ground about the alternate Khan has already been covered in Star Trek novels; one would assume this series set in the movies’ alternate universe, with Benedict Cumberbatch as the character, will take things in a different direction. Maybe they’ll even explain why this version of Khan is white!

The new mini coincides with IDW’s ongoing Star Trek series, along with the Star Trek: Countdown to Darkness movie-prologue mini.

Fun Happenings For the French Fourth of July

by Clare Gordon

meanwhile, in Portland
Bastille Day beat

The other Independence Day, commonly known as Bastille Day, or the anniversary of the beginnings of a bloodbath that made France miserable for about 10 years, provides an excellent afterparty as our red-white-and-blue hangovers slowly fade. Check out these fun events in commemoration of that July 14:

Pix Patisserie's bash on July 13 will feature a mini-Medoc run, live music all day from the likes of Tope, Gulls, and Sun Angle, a grape stomp, Champagne-sabering tutorial, and a bicycle scavenger hunt. Great food will include offerings from a whole-roasted pig as well as a champagne and oyster bar, and of course, save room for dessert. This celebration benefits the Oregon Food Bank, so bring non-perishable food items for chances to win prizes. The party starts at 2 pm and goes late.
Pix Patisserie/Bar Vivant is located at 2225 E Burnside.

Also a day early, Director Park will host the largest Bastille Day celebration on the West Coast, replete with a Portland Waiter's Race, an "avenue de la cuisine" featuring the likes of St. Honore Boulangerie and Brasserie Montmartre, and an art exhibit featuring work by students of Portland's French language immersion schools. Entry to this July 13 event is free and the festival runs from noon to 6 pm.
Director Park is located at 815 SW Park.

Apparently it's tradition to celebrate firemen on the day before Bastille Day. In such fashion, Vie de Boheme will be throwing a Bal des Pompiers on July 13, with French tunes by Eric John Kaiser and WC Beck. French food, wine, and cocktails will be offered. Firemen get free entry, but everyone who merely wants to dance with firemen pays an $8 cover. Festivities kick off at 8:30 pm and go late.
Vie de Boheme is located at 1530 SE 7th.

Joyeux July 14!

In move for spectrum and prepaid customers, AT&T buys Leap for $1.1 billion

by Cyrus Farivar

goodbye Cricket

As a way to solidify its spectrum holdings and gain a stronger foothold in the growing prepaid mobile market, AT&T has agreed to acquire Leap Wireless (and its prepaid Cricket brand) for $15 per share, which works out to $1.1 billion, given 79.05 million outstanding shares. Considering that Leap’s closing stock price on Friday afternoon was $7.98 per share, that’s a hefty premium.

In a press release on Friday, AT&T said that it would “acquire all of Leap’s stock and wireless properties, including licenses, network assets, retail stores, and approximately 5 million subscribers. As of April 15, 2013, Leap had $2.8 billion of net debt. Leap shareholders will also receive a contingent right entitling them to the net proceeds received on the sale of Leap’s 700 MHz ‘A Block’ spectrum in Chicago, which Leap purchased for $204 million in August 2012.”

Leap sustained a net loss of over $109 million in the first quarter of 2013—and noted in its previous SEC filings that it has lost over $1.2 billion between 2010 and 2012. AT&T noted that the new deal would “jump start AT&T’s expansion into the highly competitive prepaid segment.”

From the article: 'The NPD says that Google's Chromebook has now gained 20 to 25 percent of the sub-$300 laptop market in the U.S. That's a huge gain for a computer that's only been on the market for two years. It's even more impressive when you consider that Chromebooks were seen as nothing but a self-serving experiment on the part of Google for the first year of their existence.' Stephen Vaughan-Nichols is also blogging about this over at ZDnet. While the PC market shrank again in the second quarter of 2013, Chromebooks seem to have grown."

Tonight in Potential Mayhem

by Dirk VanderHart
firehose

here we go again

It's anybody's guess what'll happen on Mount Tabor this weekend.

Organizers protesting the city's decision to drain the landmark's open-air reservoirs aren't ruling out serious confrontation. The city's parks department sent out a release this morning saying it anticipates a "peaceful, unpermitted demonstration."

For now, all that's certain is Mount Tabor Park's sort of locked down and that an untold number of demonstrators—calling themselves Camp Cascadia—are planning to ascend the old volcano in hopes of forcing the city to reverse its position. The park's closure at midnight tonight will be the true test of the movement's strength.

It's got some momentum. Many of these same (expected) demonstrators, remember, are coming in to this issue fresh from a decisive victory in Portland's fluoride vote a couple months back. These are people who've championed the purity of Portland's water, and see underground reservoirs planned for Powell and Kelly buttes as potentially harmful. Kim Kaminski, a leader in the fight against fluoride, is expected to participate in this evening's protest.

Park rangers for weeks have been fretting over how to handle the demonstration, and the city's release this morning called on protestors to respect the various activities—including weddings—the park hosts on summer weekends. Meanwhile, police have said they're not planning any heavy-handed tactics.

The city since 2006 had fought a federal mandate to cover or drain the city's open-air reservoirs—both on Tabor and across the city in Washington Park. City council—notably without the support of Commissioner Amanda Fritz, who's in charge of parks—announced last month it was "faced with no other legal options," and would stop fighting the feds. There's a now a late 2015 deadline to have the Tabor reservoirs drained.

Anyway, I'll be out there this evening, tweeting at @dirquez, if you're interested in the scene but don't feel like climbing a big hill.

Guest post: Is your product eco enough? Nike’s free ‘Making’ app will tell you

by Disneyrollergirl

via Rosalind
sort of in Portland

Guest contributor LSN Global retail editor ALISON BISHOP reports on how Nike’s ‘Making’ app puts sustainable design front of mind for fashion and sportswear creatives…

Ever the innovator, Nike is building on its sustainable product design credentials by sharing its in-house Materials Sustainability Index for anyone to learn from and use – in the form of its new Making app. After collaborating with students at London College of Fashion’s Centre for Sustainable Fashion, the new app helps designers and product creators make more informed decisions about the environmental impacts of the materials they choose. It works by ranking textiles and other materials used for product design based on four environmental concern areas: water, chemistry, energy and waste. For example who knew that the manufacture of silk uses 50% less water than cotton?

Nike-Making-App 2Nike-Making-App 3

“It’s the start of a conversation,” Lee Holman, Nike’s vice-president of global apparel design told me. “Innovation is in Nike’s DNA, and sustainability is an integral part of Nike’s design process. We’ve created the Making app to empower any designer around the world to make better materials choices in the early stages of the design process. Ultimately everyone wants to create products that are better for the planet, and we want to be able to facilitate that idea.”

It’s quite a statement from the sports giant, especially considering it’s not a selling tool and it’s not connected directly to any Nike product. It’s just for the good of the planet. We call it ‘Brandstanding’ at LS:N Global. Sustainability is the new battleground for brands that want to resonate with disillusioned Millennial consumers (25-35 years old) and brands with cast iron credentials will win the vote. Now I might even design myself a version of Nike’s Flyknit trainers
