In April, 1984, Morrissey appeared on an episode of the musical trivia gameshow Pop Quiz playing alongside teammates Kim Wilde and Alvin Stardust. The challenging team was made up of Thin Lizzy Founder Phil Lynott, Nick Beggs from KajaGooGoo and Derek Forbes from Simple Minds. Morrissey proved himself to be quite knowledgable about music and very good at the game but ultimately his team lost. He seemingly took the loss gracefully, but appeared quite disturbed when host Mike Read suggested he return for another episode. Later he said that he regretted the appearance altogether.

Pop Quiz was unbearable. I realized it was a terrible mistake the moment the cameras began to roll. … I just squirmed through the programme. I went back to my dressing room afterwards and virtually felt like breaking down, it had been so pointless. I felt I’d been gagged. – Dangerous Minds

James Cochrane got his robot band The Bit-52’s back together for a cover The B-52′s 1980 single, “Private Idaho.” The guitar, keyboard and drum parts are handled by a trio of robots, while the sound of flatbed scanners and a DECTalk Express speech-to-text synthesizer (the kind used by Stephen Hawking) fill in for the female and male vocal parts, respectively. The Bit-52’s, which made a online splash three years back with a cover of “Rock Lobster,” were reunited to help promote the Kickstarter campaign for the Art Rocks Athens, a non-profit foundation that helps preserve and celebrate the music scene in Athens, Georgia.

To clarify, Supreme’s store location on Lafayette Street in New York City WILL NOT have the Supreme x Nike Foamposite 1 Collection tomorrow. Instead, the items will only be available through its online shop, Los Angeles and London locations. Because of concerns over public safety, especially after today’s pandemonium that closed a busy portion of the SoHo neighborhood, New York Police Department asked Supreme not to offer the Supreme x Nike Foamposite 1 Collection at its New York City store. To deter any stragglers or delinquents from starting a commotion, NYPD will be monitoring the area closely till further notice.

Bangalore, India-based filmmaker and artist Krishna Shenoi has created an alternate opening scene for the film Gravity that shows Superman (Christopher Reeve) rescuing Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) from space. We also learn that Superman was the actual cause of Dr. Stone’s little mishap.

Hard to believe, but Oscar-winning director Alfonso Cuarón (‘Children of Men‘) originally shot an opening scene for ‘Gravity’ that would have radically changed the film. Too bad the brass at Warner Bros. rejected this version.

Earlier this week photographer Mike Kelley photographed every aircraft that departed from the south complex of Los Angeles International Airport over an eight hour period. He then digitally composited each aircraft into a single image entitled “Wake Turbulence.” The photo is reminiscent of Cy Kuckenbaker’s composite time-lapse of San Diego International Airport.

The latest video by Grantland explores the world of combat juggling, a competitive game that turns the club tossing form of entertainment into a team sport. Unlike more traditional versions of the activity, combat juggling is less concerned with form than with knocking competitors’ pins to the ground. The World Juggling Federation, which has been hosting Major League Combat competitions since 2010, describes the sport thusly:

Major League Combat integrates the skill of juggling three clubs into a team sport where team members must attack and destroy the opposing force’s ability to juggle.

Last year, the sport made an appearance on The Colbert Report, in which the host described it as “the sport for you, if you’ve ever seen someone juggling and thought to yourself, ‘man, I’d like to punch that guy.’ ” The World Juggling Federation’s next Major League Combat competition will be held in December at WJF 9 in Las Vegas.

TeamDare has been building competitive robots since 2001, but it’s this band of ‘bots that have really put the Dutch engineering collective on the map. In this 2011 clip, a trio of robo-players take on the title track from the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ 1999 LP, Californication. Two robots play the drum and guitar, while a third swaps in a pan pipe for Anthony Kiedis’s vocals. There are a number of other robo-covers on TeamDare’s YouTube page, including Dick Dale’s “Miserlou” and No Doubt’s “Don’t Speak.”

A strengthening low pressure system over South Dakota this afternoon is producing a pretty striking temperature gradient across the northern Plains. The system is causing blizzard conditions over much of the Dakotas with temperatures as low as 10°F, while just a few dozen miles away, the town of Shenandoah, Iowa is sitting at a comfortable 79°F.

YouTube user Tom Enstone has posted an interesting video where an unknown fluid in the process of being evacuated, or having all the air and other contents that aren’t said fluid removed, in order to then vaporize for mass spectrometry appears to alternate between solid and liquid, boiling and freezing. This is apparently due to the fluid reaching it triple point, a specific temperature and pressure that causes the substance to coexist in multiple phases like solid and liquid.

The three buttons, which are not standard on the controller, represent A, L, and B.
