'Lego Movie 2' Filmmaker Wants More Badass Females in the Sequel

As we all know, The Lego Movie is hands down, one of the greatest movies ever made in the history of all time and that is not up for debate, so please don't even try. But that doesn't mean one of the people behind the $400 million blockbuster is satisfied, at least not when it comes to the movie's depiction of women.

20 Years After Genocide, Forgiveness Portraits from Rwanda

by Jia Tolentino
by Jia Tolentino

MUDAHERANWA: “I burned her house. I attacked her in order to kill her and her children, but God protected them, and they escaped. When I was released from jail, if I saw her, I would run and hide. Then AMI started to provide us with trainings. I decided to ask her for forgiveness. To have good relationships with the person to whom you did evil deeds — we thank God.”

MUKANYANDWI: “I used to hate him. When he came to my house and knelt down before me and asked for forgiveness, I was moved by his sincerity. Now, if I cry for help, he comes to rescue me. When I face any issue, I call him.”

The New York Times has a series of portraits up by photographer Pieter Hugo, who went to southern Rwanda this year and photographed Hutu perpetrators of the 1994 genocide with the Tutsi survivors of their crimes. Working with Association Modeste et Innocent, each pair is "counseled over many months, culminating in the perpetrator’s formal request for forgiveness," and the way these subjects speak about their relationships with each other (and the way their emotions show up in their body language) is remarkable.

Disneyland Social Clubs Are the "Gangs" You Always Wanted To Join

by Isha Aran

Disneyland Social Clubs Are the "Gangs" You Always Wanted To Join

In an interesting development in fandom, more and more regular visitors of Disneyland are organizing themselves into "social clubs," apparently inspired by motorcycle gangs. Yes, because nothing says The Happiest Place on Earth like a sentimental take on the incredibly menacing Hells Angels. But these aren't your grandma's one-percenters. No, they aren't exactly trafficking drugs and illegal arms; rather these die-hard superfans are trading limited edition Disney pins.

Garfield without Garfield's thought-bubbles

by Cory Doctorow

You've probably seen Garfield Minus Garfield, a collection of Jim Davis Garfield strips in which Garfield himself has been removed, transforming the strip into a sinister portrait of Jon Arbuckle's descent into irretrievable madness.

But there's a good case to be made for Garfield without Garfield's thought-bubbles as the true standard-bearer for disorienting and unexpectedly great Garfield remixes. With this view, Jon Arbuckle is cast as a man who carries on detailed conversations with a cat, which is arguably weirder than the idea that he's merely wildly hallucinating.

Village designed as a home for forgetful seniors

by Rob Beschizza
Kelsey Campbell-Dollahan: " there's still no perfect way to care for sufferers of dementia and Alzheimer's. In the Netherlands, however, a radical idea is being tested: Self-contained "villages" where people with dementia shop, cook, and live together—safely."

FL: Disney Parks Hike Ticket Prices, Making One Day for One Person Nearly $100

by kjb

Mickey Mouse must have a boat payment due or something, as he’s looking to raise a little more cash at his theme parks down in Florida. Walt Disney World just announced that they’re upping the admission cost to its theme parks, and the price increase is effective pretty much immediately. So if you’re been saving up for that trip to visit the Magic Kingdom—you might need to save a little bit more.

It’s pretty much an annual expectation at this point, but it always seems to sneak up on those with Disney plans on the horizon. This time all four parks are going up in cost by $4 per day, and it’s the Magic Kingdom leading them all. It will now set back one visitor $99 to check things out for the day, and when tax is added onto things that’s $105.44. Of course Disney wants you to stay longer than one-day, and the tickets for multi-day visits work out to be a better value. However, it’s a little scary that the cost of doing business with Mickey has now gone over that $100 mark.

St. Vincent's St. Vincent

by Emma Carmichael
by Emma Carmichael

NPR has the first listen of St. Vincent's fourth album, St. Vincent; if you combine this with Katy B's new Little Red then that is probably all the new music you'll need to survive Tuesday. I also really enjoyed this Pitchfork profile of St. Vincent, a.k.a. 31-year-old Annie Clark, who, while walking naked and alone in the West Texas country last year (!), encountered a rattlesnake, ran home, took a shot of tequila, and then wrote a song called "Rattlesnake." (It kicks off the album, in fact.) Other biographical details might be hard to come by. From Ryan Dombal's piece:

Naturally, the biggest enemy of disbelief-suspending at modern concerts is the smartphone, and on new single "Digital Witness", Clark takes on the voice of information-age propaganda—"I want all of your mind"—as strutting horns fight back amidst a gloriously human groove. "We have this feeling that we're being watched, and our psychic response is to make ourselves transparent," Clark muses. "The real currency in the future will be privacy." If she's right—if our worth will result from how much we can keep hidden from prying eyes and bright screens—Clark may become a secret billionaire. Because even with all of her striking visuals, she still doesn't like her picture being taken. Though her songs are ripped from her heart, she prefers not to talk about the personal events that led to their being.

"There have been things in my life that were super heartbreaking, and I could've made that fodder, but I don't want to do that," she says. "It just makes me feel weird, and it doesn't really help anybody else. I mean, I don't take selfies. It makes me feel empty inside to take a picture of myself at an event, like, 'Isn't my life cool?'"

Where do we find her altar? "Rattlensake" and others streamable here. [NPR, Pitchfork]
