Phil Collins' ex-wife has allegedly commandeered his Miami mansion with armed guards

fun fact: phil collins used to own the largest private collection of alamo artifacts, but eventually donated them to the actual alamo. he was (is?) weirdly obsessed with the alamo for a british guy.

Phil Collins wasn’t thinking about Orianne Cevey when he sang about a woman with “the built-in ability to take everything she sees,” but he may as well have been. According to Miami Dade County court documents shared by The Miami Herald, the rocker’s ex-wife has commandeered his $33 million South Florida mansion with…

Netflix Is Creating a Problem By Canceling TV Shows Too Soon

by BeauHD
Emahlstadt

netflix has turned into mostly garbage. so many of their originals are just terrible (though mindhunters was a solid B+, and there are a few decent comedy specials).

we cancelled about a month ago and have never looked back, which feels weird for what used to be the ubiquitous, go-to streaming service.

An anonymous reader quotes a report from Insider: Netflix is killing its most interesting shows in their infancy and it could be the streaming giant's downfall. In the seven years that Netflix has produced original content, the world of TV streaming has dramatically changed. Now Netflix is getting left behind in the race it started. Many of its unique and ambitious shows have been canceled before they could reach their full potential. And Netflix keeps churning out more shows each year, without replicating the breakout success of 2016's "Stranger Things." Statements from executives have described the cancellations as the result of a cost analysis that tells Netflix a longer-running show won't lead to new subscribers. Still, with syndicated shows such as "The Office" and "Friends" leaving its platform and a string of disappointing cancellations, including "Glow," Netflix has set itself up for a disaster when it comes to its reputation as a TV-watcher's must-have service. In 2020 alone, Netflix has canceled 18 original series. Of those, 14 had only one season. [...] TV lovers in these fandoms can only be burned so many times before they stop investing. Why should a Netflix subscriber spend 10 hours watching a new show if there's a decent chance they'll never see it end?

For amelia

If you have found yourself like and ordering more than in person shopping and now find yourself with piles of boxes, you should know that you can or order a second recycling bin for free.

I used to keep my boxes out of the bin to give priority to the bagged recyclables. Now i have one for cardboard and one for bagged.

God knows that one trip to Ikea can fill up one bin.

IKEA partnering with ASUS for new line of ‘gamer furniture’

by Dom Peppiatt
Emahlstadt

give me an affordable gaming chair that doesn't look like it was designed by a 9 year old.

Gaming furniture isn’t traditionally the most affordable or attractive thing in the world. Unless you’re into RGB strips and garish, racecar-inspired getups, purpose-built gaming chairs and desks probably haven’t been for you.

Until now, perhaps. Swedish homeware brand IKEA has teamed up with ASUS’ Republic of Gamers (or ‘ROG’) arm to create a new line of “affordable gaming furniture accessories”.

“By teaming up with ROG, IKEA wants to combine its home furnishing knowledge with ROG’s expertise in creating exceptional gaming experience,” the company says in a press release.

IKEA and ASUS ROG desgin meeting

Though there’s not an awful lot of information about what to expect from the collaboration at the time of writing, it stands to reason that the two companies will want to corner the gaming desk, chair, and streaming setup sector of the market.

Apparently, the line is going to include ‘around’ 30 products. The main focus for the whole line will be ergonomics and affordability (which, if you’re familiar with IKEA furniture, isn’t that much of a departure for the brand).

“Gamers have always dreamed of the perfect gaming space that is both comfortably functional and enables full immersion in games,” says the general manager of Asus Gaming Gear, Kris Huang.

“Together with Ikea as an expert in home furnishing, we envision that this collaboration will create synergies that empower gamers to build the gaming space they have always imagined in the comfort of their own homes.”

IKEA notes that its new line of gamer-centric furniture will first roll out to China in February 2021, with the US and other markets to follow in October 2021.

Texas S B.J. Foster reportedly quits team during win over UTEP

by Cody Daniel

NCAA Football: Kansas State at Texas Scott Wachter-USA TODAY Sports

The former five-star prospect started eight games for the Longhorns last season.

Very little went wrong for the Texas Longhorns on Saturday night during their 59-3 throttling of the UTEP Miners, at least in between the lines.

But amid all of the celebration, it appears that a former highly-touted recruit and key contributor may be on his way out of the program, as Orangebloods’ Anwar Richardson reported that Longhorns junior safety B.J. Foster quit the team during the third quarter. Per Richardson’s report, Foster was unhappy with his playing time against UTEP.

A former five-star prospect who ranked as the No. 3 safety in the 2018 class, Foster has started in 14 of his 22 appearances throughout his first two seasons on the Forty Acres, Totaling 80 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, four sacks, two interceptions, and six pass breakups.

However, Foster was listed as a second-string option for Texas’ season-opener behind redshirt senior Chris Brown. If Foster has, in fact, quit the team, the next man up per Texas’ initial depth chart is Tyler Owens, a former four-star talent who appeared in all 13 games last season, including one start against TCU. Owens recorded one tackle against UTEP.

Mafia Definitive Edition’s name doesn’t do this impressive remake justice

by Alex Donaldson
Emahlstadt

i think amy cried at the end of mafia 2, the only mafia game i ever played. this has talked my right into picking up this updated trilogy package, though.

Mafia: Definitive Edition is shaping up to be something pretty special. It’s a shame it has one of the worst game names of the year.

We see a lot of definitive re-release type things in the world of video games. Definitive Editions, Game of the Year Editions, HD Remasters… but Mafia Definitive Edition isn’t in line with those trends. Not at all. Despite the name, this is for all intents and purposes a new game. It’s got more in common with, say, the lavishly expensive Final Fantasy 7 Remake than it does the Definitive Editions of Mafia 2 and 3, both of which are basically the original releases with a moderately fresh coat of paint slapped on top.

You see, this is a full-blown remake of Mafia. This isn’t new news, but having now played the game the extent of what this means is blazingly clear. The console version of Mafia released on PS2 and Xbox around the same time as Grand Theft Auto San Andreas – a different era for the open-world crime game. When Mafia 3 developer Hangar 13 decided to revisit the series’ roots, the studio obviously concluded that too much had changed to simply pretty-up and re-release the original – so they just started from scratch.

What you get then, is the same story, tone, world and characters as the original classic – but rebuilt in an all-new game. With a remake your options are to be faithful or to be bold, and Hangar 13 appears to have struck a healthy balance with a strong leaning towards the former.

The truth is that this game doesn’t actually have much beyond the superficial in common with the original Mafia. It’s built on the Mafia 3 engine, so things like shooting and the general handling of protagonist Tommy feel more like that game. With that said, changes have been made to bring things more in line with the original. For instance, the thirties setting means this entry has very different cars: more sluggish, with much more deliberate handling. Therefore the way cars control has been tweaked to represent that.

The infamously no-nonsense police presence from the original release has been toned down on default difficulty settings, meaning they’re more likely to turn a blind eye to speeding and the like. If you’re an old-school Mafia fan, you can reinstate this, as well as other more brutal elements of the original, with the ‘classic’ difficulty setting.

Similar license has been taken right throughout the game. Story sequences now have the same flair for the cinematic as the later games, adding a touch of the original’s slavish devotion to the works of Scorsese and Coppola to direction as well as tone. The open world as built in the 2000s was evocative of but not entirely accurate to real cities of the era – so elements like layout, design and even district names have been tweaked to be more realistic this time around, bringing Mafia’s world up to 2020 standards.

After playing the opening hours of Mafia Definitive Edition, one thing is now totally clear: this is a tightly-constructed, brilliant reimagining of the original Mafia. This is where the name of the game comes into question, though: the changes mean many fans will likely still prefer the original version, making this very much not a definitive edition. As an alternative take, a remake, something that exists alongside the original, however, it’s perfect.

If you missed the original Mafia or even enjoyed it back then but would likely bounce off it due to its eccentricities, this provides that story in a more modern package more in line with the latter two games in the series.

I honestly can’t wait to play more in the final release. There’s something special about Mafia’s more directed take on the open-world crime game. This is a game that could easily be a linear experience with its mission structure – but instead it’s set in a great big, charming open world. It stands apart, and this remake seems to understand what makes the series special. It’s a shame that this name seems to fundamentally under-represent what a huge effort this project clearly is.
