Valve will soon let you stream Steam games to phones and tablets

by Kyle Orland
Emahlstadt

who fucking knows. i'm about to delete my fucking steam account. i almost never use it, but about once a month i get an unsolicited "here's your link to refresh your password" email like someone's trying to hack into it. plus it makes my MacBook run hot like fucking lava.

Enlarge / The Steam Link app will go well beyond the functionality of the existing Steam Mobile app shown here, but we don't have imagery for the Steam Link yet, so....

Users will be able to turn their phones and tablets into de facto portable PC monitors for playing Steam games around the house later this month. That's when Valve has announced it will be launching its new Steam Link app for iOS and Android, officially bringing Steam's long-established in-home streaming feature to mobile devices for the first time (though there have been unofficial apps to provide similar functions for a while now).

The free Steam Link app will be available for phones and tablets running Android or iOS (though Android support will be in beta for launch) starting the week of May 21. Apple TV and Android-based TV platforms will also run the software, Valve said, essentially turning those set-top boxes into versions of Valve's own standalone Steam Link hardware.

The mobile app will link to a "Mac or PC" host system, according to the announcement (Update: A Valve representative tells Ars Linux and SteamOS are also supported), relaying game images and sound and transmitting controller input over 5Ghz Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet. While Valve said the app will include support for the Steam Controller, MFi-certified iOS controllers, "and more," it's unclear whether more generic USB/bluetooth controllers and/or mouse/keyboard setups will be usable via the mobile app (Update: A Valve representative tells Ars that keyboard/mouse controls will be supported, with a fuller list of compatible controllers available before launch).

afexplorer:This creepy thing on a dog’s eye is a condition...

afexplorer:

This creepy thing on a dog’s eye is a condition called persistent pupillary membrane.

It happens when the membrane that supplies blood to the lens of the eye in the developing foetus doesn’t atrophy after birth as it is supposed to.

It’s actually a relatively benign condition that can often be treated just by dilating the pupil 👁

Where Sam Ehlinger ranks among the top QBs nationally, according to Athlon

by Wescott Eberts
Emahlstadt

eh, i'm not buying it. sounds like more texas bias, to me. we're also sitting at a completely unjustified 23rd for pre-season rank, which i don't buy.

The sophomore is currently ahead of Kyler Murray and behind Kyle Kempt and Charlie Brewer.

With spring practices complete across the country, the college football world is now in the midst of ranking season as fans and media wait for Media Days still more than two months away.

At Athlon Sports, that means ranking all 130 FBS quarterbacks, with Texas Longhorns sophomore Sam Ehlinger coming in at No. 34, one spot in front of prospective Oklahoma starter Kyler Murray, who could choose professional baseball this summer, and directly behind Iowa State’s Kyle Kempt and Baylor’s Charlie Brewer:

Just like Kyler Murray, don’t be surprised if Ehlinger climbs this list by the time fall practice starts. All signs point to Ehlinger holding off Shane Buechele for the starting job, and coach Tom Herman is counting on the sophomore to jumpstart an offense that averaged only 25.4 points a game in Big 12 contests last year. As a true freshman last fall, Ehlinger led the team with 1,915 passing yards and tossed 11 scores. He also paced the team in rushing yards (381) and scored twice on the ground. With a full offseason to work as the starter and develop under Herman’s watch, Ehlinger is poised for a big jump in his second year in Austin.

Athlon describes the list as akin to a power ranking and believes that Murray could significantly climb on this list if he’s able to settle in as a passer. Based on his spring game performance, there are still some questions about that when also factoring in the fact he threw more interceptions than touchdowns as a freshman at Texas A&M.

Kempt doesn’t have nearly the same amount of upside as Murray, but he is an extremely experienced player. However, the question for Iowa State is whether Kempt can produce at the same level after losing three of the team’s top four wide receivers. Opponents will also enter the season after months of scouring Kempt’s film for weaknesses to exploit.

As for Brewer, Athlon believes that the Bears will improve significantly in head coach Matt Rhule’s second season, with a strong wide receiver corps and Brewer’s positive freshman season providing the launching points for the offense. Brewer doesn’t have the arm strength of Ehlinger or his power in the running game, but he also made fewer costly mistakes.

West Virginia quarterback Will Grier ranks No. 1 on the list, providing some perspective on just how difficult it will be to beat the Mountaineers in Austin against a healthy Grier.

From the Texas perspective, the question is whether Ehlinger really put himself in position for a “big jump” during his sophomore season. While there are still questions about the offensive line and Ehlinger’s decision making, he did improve during the Texas Bowl in avoiding mistakes and drew praise from his coaches in the second half of spring practice.

The Orange-White game was a forum for Ehlinger to take some more chances, according to head coach Tom Herman, and Ehlinger was able to avoid any interceptions once again, but did show continued room for improvement with his ball placement.

The belief from Athlon is that Ehlinger is poised to rank among the top quarter of all starters at his position nationally with a chance to make a significant jump. If Ehlinger can truly become one of the top 20 or 25 quarterbacks in the country, it would represent a big jump that would likely coincide with similar improvement from the offense overall.

According to at least one national publication, that jump is possible and would put Texas in a position it hasn’t occupied at the position since 2012. Share your own thoughts on the matter in the comment section.

Texas baseball positioning itself to host regional after series win at Texas Tech

by Wescott Eberts
Emahlstadt

i don't really understand college baseball very well to begin with, let alone the post-season, so i had to look up what it means to "host a regional," and this is what i got from wikipedia:

Teams will be divided into sixteen regionals of four teams, which will conduct a double-elimination tournament. Regional champions will then face each other in Super Regionals, a best-of-three-game series, to determine the eight participants in the College World Series.[1] For the first time, the Tournament will seed the top 16 teams, rather than only the top 8 teams as has been the practice since 1999. This will ensure that the regional featuring top ranked team will be paired with the regional hosted by the sixteenth seeded team, where in the past Super Regionals were paired generally along geographical lines.[3]

Kody Clemens

If the Longhorns can take care of business over the last four games, Texas could host a regional for the first time since 2011.

“We’re just grinders,” Texas Longhorns second baseman Kody Clemens said. “Sometimes we start out the game behind by two or three runs. Everyone just keeps their nose on the ground and fights back and gets runs on the board. We just don’t stop. We don’t stop hitting, and we’re not going to stop hitting.”

Following a series-deciding Sunday win over the Texas Tech Red Raiders that included a game-tying home run by Clemens, his third of the weekend, the quote from the team’s leader and best player summarizes the 2018 season for the Horns.

Led by 16 home runs from Clemens and 10 home runs from designated hitter Zach Zubia, Texas finally has a high-powered offense once again and it’s helping carry a pitching that struggles to consistently throw strikes, especially on the back end.

For all the grittiness and comeback ability shown by David Pierce’s team this season, it’s still inconsistent enough to lose two of three games against the likes of West Virginia and Kansas State, two of the Big 12’s worst programs.

In all likelihood, the team’s postseason seeding and ultimate fate will come down to the pitching staff.

Weekend starters Nolan Kingham, Chase Shugart, and Blair Henley have all been inconsistent this season, with Kingham allowing a team-high eight home runs and Shugart and Henley both struggling at times with command.

Shugart’s Saturday loss against the Red Raiders was all too typical of his season, which has produced a 5.17 ERA — he walked five of the 24 batters he faced and gave up eight earned runs on only six hits.

The other concern is finding a fourth starter for the NCAA Tournament. Last week, Pierce admitted that he doesn’t know who would assume that role if necessary.

“If you’re asking who’s going to be a fourth starter right now, I have no idea,” Pierce said. We’re still waiting on that. I would probably say it would be a short leash for whoever started.”

Beyond the three weekend starters, Pierce has used seven different pitchers to start games this season, with Nico O’Donnell receiving the most opportunities at seven. However, like much of the staff, the freshman has struggled with his command, allowing 22 walks in 32 innings of work.

Fellow freshman Kamron Fields has had some promising moments, as reflected in his 2.25 ERA, which ranks second on the team, but he’s also had issues finding the strike zone, allowing 17 walks in only 20 innings.

The issues have put Pierce in an unusual position.

“I’ve never had to piece it the way we’re piecing it,” he said. “It’s just what it is right now. We’ve got two 23 year-olds in the back end who haven’t pitched in two years. We have a young man from Italy that’s a JC kid, first year here. Then we have a lot of freshmen that are trying to fill a role.”

Key missing pieces help explain the struggles, like prospective back-end relievers Donny Diaz and Cole Quintanilla, who haven’t pitched this season due to injuries. Tristan Stevens has only appeared in two games, throwing just 2.1 innings.

The struggles of last season’s closer, Beau Ridgeway, have complicated the situation. After a solid freshman season, Ridgeway was a revelation during Pierce’s first season in Austin, recording a 1.89 ERA as he recorded 12 saves and held opponents to a .189 batting average.

This season, however, Ridgeway has an ERA of 11.32, as batters have hit three home runs and scored 26 earned runs against him in only 20.2 innings of work.

The emergence of three pitchers has helped keep Texas in the mix to win a regular season title — Parker Joe Robinson, Andy McGuire, and Matteo Bocchi. Each of them have a unique story.

Robinson appeared in only 10 games over his first three seasons in Austin and his transition into the David Pierce era was not an easy one.

“Honestly, I tried to take his scholarship away from him because I didn’t think he could pitch here,” Pierce said.

Instead of giving up, Robinson convinced his head coach to give him a chance and Pierce recommended a change to lower his arm slot. After Robinson dropped his delivery, he abandoned his change-up and spitter in favor of a sinker-slider reportroire.

The change began to pay off last season before Robinson emerged as the team’s set-up man this year — the California native’s 1.59 ERA in 15 appearances leads the team and few pitching performances have been as impressive as holding Texas Tech to one run on Sunday when he entered the game with the bases loaded and no outs.

His control has also been a benefit, as he’s only walked six batters in 22.2 innings of work, in sharp contrast to much of the pitching staff.

From Italy, Bocchi has represented his country in the Little League World Series and become the first Italian-born player in program history, making for a truly remarkable story. He’s also been one of the more reliable relief pitchers, winning all three of his decisions and recording a 3.68 ERA, though he has also struggled with his command at times.

The story of Andy McGuire is remarkable, too. He was a highly-ranked player out of high school, starting some at third base in 2015 and then appearing in 13 games as a pitcher the following season. After two years away from the program, McGuire returned and has emerged as the closer with seven saves and a 2.45 ERA in 20 appearances.

Following a week off for finals, Texas will have four more opportunities to earn a regional bid for the first time since 2011, with home games against Texas State and TCU.

The Horned Frogs have struggled this season, winning just 7 of 16 games away from Fort Worth. This isn’t the same team that has appeared in four consecutive College World Series, but it is a top-75 team in RPI.

The challenge for the Longhorns is proving that it can cause some waves in the postseason by taking care of business to close out the regular season.

There will probably be some walks handed out, but the team will back it up with good defense and keep grinding at the plate. Clemens and his teammates have been doing that all season and it has made for some remarkable performances.

Nintendo job posting suggests new Legend of Zelda may be underway

by Marshall Lemon
Emahlstadt

but wait, i haven't even played the last four of these yet!

Nintendo is pushing ahead on new Legend of Zelda content. Is it for a Breath of the Wild sequel, or something else?

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was an absolute success story for Nintendo, one that almost made us forget how long the game was in development. The publisher originally intended it as a Wii U exclusive before transitioning to a Switch release, which left fans waiting 6 years for a brand-new core Zelda game (Hyrule Warriors and Link Between Worlds notwithstanding).

Now it seems Nintendo doesn’t want to wait an entire console generation for a new Zelda game – at least if this job posting is anything to go on.

As reported by IGN, the translation of this posting reveals Nintendo is seeking an experienced level designer to work on The Legend of Zelda series at Nintendo’s Kyoto headquarters. The position will include dungeon creation, enemy design, events, and field (map) creation.

The candidate will need to be able to communicate in Japanese, and will be provided with a housing allowance on top of a regular salary if necessary. That said, the position is contract-based and is not guaranteed to become permanent, so don’t move to Japan unless you’re really sure about this one.

For players, the real question is what kind of content this Legend of Zelda posting refers to. A Breath of the Wild sequel is the most likely option, but there are other possibilities that cover new Breath of the Wild DLC or spin-off games.

Here’s hoping we don’t have to wait six years to find out – unless it’s as good as Breath of the Wild turned out to be.

New 'Overwatch' map brings the battle to Italy's canals

by David Lumb
Emahlstadt

i'm always ready to revisit overwatch

Last month, players of Blizzard's hero shooter Overwatch took a trip into the game's fictional past with a new temporary game mode, Retribution. The brawl portrayed heroes escaping through the streets of Venice after a clandestine mission gone wrong. Though the event ended on Tuesday, players can still roam (and fight) around gorgeous Italian canalways as the latest map, Rialto, is added to the game -- along with a few hero changes in the latest patch.

Fan Uploads Video of Amazing Original Lobby Standee from ‘Friday the 13th: Part 3’

by John Squires

You may remember that we wrote an article a couple months back wherein we shared vintage, newly unearthed images from an opening weekend event for Friday the 13th: Part 3 back in 1982. The event took place in the Washington, DC area, and an actor was hired to play Jason Voorhees for it. Those photos, well, they warmed our heart.

In one of the photos, “Jason” is standing in front of a large Friday the 13th: Part 3 standee, which one fan actually still has in his possession! As reported by the Facebook page Slasher Trash, Friday fan Gregg Parish has had the Part 3 standee for the past 30 years, and he recently dug it out of storage to share it with the internet.

Parish notes, “So, just dug this out of storage. Have had it since 1986. Got it at an antique show for $20 trading a Gone With The Wind video standup. Plugged it in and it still works after being out of sight for 20+ years. Now, it’s part of my office.”

The standee has a “dripping blood” feature, which you can see in action below!

Jester King Colour 5 2018 Batch BeerPulse

(Austin, TX) – Jester King announced this week the coming release of the 2018 batch of Colour Five. More below…

***

We are happy to announce that fruit refermentation season for 2018 season has arrived! This Friday, May 4th, we’ll be releasing our 2018 batch of Colour 5! Colour 5 is our barrel aged farmhouse ale refermented with Texas-grown blueberries from Echo Springs Farms in Murchison, Texas. It’s our first fruit refermentation release of 2018.

Colour Five was brewed with raw Hill Country well water, Texas-grown grains, a blend of fresh hops and aged hops from our barn, and was fermented with our mixed culture of native yeast and bacteria. It was aged in neutral oak barrels for roughly a year, then refermented in stainless steel with about 2,000 pounds of Texas blueberries for about six weeks. The blueberries went through our crusher / destemmer prior to refermentation and we performed pump-overs throughout refermentation for good flavor and color pick-up from the fruit. Colour Five was then 100% naturally refermented in the serving vessel.

Our 2018 batch of Colour 5 will be released this Friday at 4pm when our tasting room opens. It is 6.5% ABV, 9 IBU’s, 3.22 pH, and has a specific gravity of 0.999. It was packaged on March 27th, 2018. There are about 2,250 bottles available (500mL/$20) with a bottle limit of six per customer per day. It will also be available by the glass at our tasting room. Outside of special events, Colour 5 will only be available at Jester King. We hope you enjoy!

The Best Cat Beds (According to Our Cats)

At some point, most cat owners have bought their cat a bed, only to discover their kitty preferred the tissue paper or cardboard box it came in. To try to avoid future heartache of this type, we spent 19 hours researching 62 cat beds and testing 13 of them. We picked seven we love for their style, softness, and cleanability—as well as their ability to meet the behavioral needs of most cats. Although we can’t guarantee a cat won’t snub a bed ever again, we think most cat owners will find a standout here.

With an array of grisly surgical tools at his disposal, it’s only a matter of time before the youngsters begin meeting various splattery ends at the hands of the ghoulish Coroner. Helmed by director Richard Friedman (Scared Stiff and Phantom of the Mall: Eric’s Revenge), and also starring Penthouse Pet of the Year 1988 Patty Mullen (Frankenhooker), Doom Asylum combines outlandish gore and a wise-cracking villain to create one of the most wildly entertainingly blood-spattered slashers of the late ’80s.”

The Blu-ray will release July 16 in the UK and July 17 in the US.

(Denver, CO) – Great Divide Brewing Company introduces two new seasonal beers during the second quarter – Vanilla Oak Aged Yeti and Wood Werks No. 2 Flemish Sour Brown Ale. Meanwhile, Rumble Oak Aged IPA rejoins the lineup and seasonal favorite Roadie Grapefruit Radler makes its triumphant return to cans for the second year.

The newest release in Great Divide’s Wood Werks Barrel Aged series is a complex sour beer aged in red wine, whiskey and bourbon barrels for 12 months and brewed with strawberries. This limited release is launched alongside Vanilla Oak Aged Yeti, a new iteration of their classic Imperial Stout with the perfect flavor combo to complement its Yeti series counterparts.

The brewery also welcomes back Rumble Oak Aged IPA and Roadie Grapefruit Radler this May.

“Rumble was discontinued from the seasonal lineup three years ago to make room for new additions and we’re excited to re-introduce this cult-favorite back into the market,” said Shannon Berner of Great Divide.

And with the success of Roadie Radler in 2017, the brewery is looking forward to getting Roadie cans into even more beer drinkers hands this summer. “Make sure you get some Roadie while you can. We know from last summer that it goes quickly and you’ll miss it when it’s gone,” said Berner.

Wood Werks No. 2—Flemish Sour Brown Ale with Strawberries was aged for 12 months in red wine, whiskey and bourbon barrels, then masterfully blended for incredible depth of flavor. Notes of bread pudding, figs and an earthy undertone round out this tart, complex sour. The second in Great Divide’s new Wood Werks series, this gem is best savored slowly. Available in 12oz bottles and draft May through June. 9.7 percent ABV.

Vanilla Oak Aged Yeti is the next flavor evolution coming out of the brewery’s cherished Yeti clan. Sweet vanilla tones meld into the oak characteristics as the two flavors support and enhance one another. A pairing fit for a beast, the vanilla and oak are uplifted by the bold and roasty character we all know and love from Yeti. Available in 22oz bombers and draft May through August. 9.5 percent ABV.

Rumble Oak Aged IPA, is an American IPA with subtle nuance. Brewed with heavy handed additions of Pacific Northwest hops, and gently aged on French and American oak resulting in a wonderful balance of bitterness, caramel sweetness, vanilla, and undertones of pine and citrus. Available in 6-packs and draft May through September. 6.2 percent ABV.

Roadie Grapefruit Radler was named both for the road biking cyclist (roadie) and the German word for cycling (radler) and inspired by Great Divide’s roots in the cycling community. Brewed with plenty of natural grapefruit puree and zero soda, this easy-drinking ale pours a hazy sunrise gold and is bursting with citrus aroma. Unique in its class, this Radler is refreshing and slightly tart, with just enough bitterness to keep both cyclists and spectators coming back for more. Available in 6-packs and draft May through August. 4.2 percent ABV.
