David Gordon Green floats the idea of remaking Ghoulies or Critters, take your pick

ghoulies, please.

David Gordon Green can probably make any genre flick he wants after his Halloween remake sliced and diced box offices worldwide (so far, it’s raked in nearly $253 million on a $10 million budget), but his ambitions seem to be leading him straight down the toilet. In a recent Reddit AMA, the prolific filmmaker…

A Sesame Street movie is an inevitability in this age of IP, and, if we’re being honest, we are kind of overdue for a Follow That Bird sequel. Now, Collider reports that we’re one step closer to it becoming a reality, with Warner Bros. reportedly eyeing Anne Hathaway for a leading role. She’s got experience, after…

Bethesda recently said that Fallout 76 install bugs "won't be the last bump in the road," and those words have proved all too prophetic. Thanks to a support snafu, customers unwittingly exposed their private data, including credit card info, home address and more, to other users. "I am getting your support tickets on my Bethesda account," said Reddit user Jessiepie. "I now know where you live."

Metal band breaks up for multiple very good reasons

by Reid McCarter on News, shared by Reid McCarter to The A.V. Club

Bands break up for all sorts of reasons, many of which are personal enough that the general public doesn’t need to know about them. It is, after all, nobody’s business if a few musicians no longer want to write or perform together because they can’t get along. That’s the sort of thing that can be kept private.

Negan’s Gameplay Trailer Unveiled For ‘Tekken 7’

by Pat Torfe
Emahlstadt

lolwut

First, Bandai Namco blew me away with Street Fighter‘s Akuma being in Tekken 7. Then they blew me further back with Art of Fighting‘s Geese Howard in that same game. Final Fantasy XV‘s Noctis, I couldn’t care about any less than I already do. But then they announced The Walking Dead‘s Negan, and I was back on my butt.

Today, Bandai Namco released a gameplay trailer showing Negan and his trusty baseball bat Lucille dishing out punishment on the other fighters. Negan is part of the Season 2 DLC pack for Tekken 7, which also includes returning veteran fighters Craig Marduk, Armor King, Julia Chang, Lei “I’m totally not based off of Jackie Chan” Wulong, and Anna Williams. While Negan’s arrival still has yet to be determined, Marduk and Armor King are set to arrive for the game on December 3rd.

As you can probably guess, Negan’s gameplay trailer recreates the iconic scene from The Walking Dead where Negan plays a little “Eenie Meenie Miney Mo”, except the fighters aren’t going to take it kneeling down. And yes, the dubbing is a little weird for Negan (because Japan), but bringing a bat to a fighter feels so right.

I’m still not giving up my love for Yoshimitsu, however. Sorry, guys.

Tekken 7 is available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam.

The Best Table Tennis Shot of 2018

by Jason Kottke
Emahlstadt

the ping pong shot is pretty cool, but my favorite part is where kottke gets to work in the fact that he hasn't watched ESPN in years. watching ESPN is so gauche afterall.

This is probably the craziest and most unlikely table tennis shot you will ever see. Just watch. The guy who pulls it off is Christopher Chen from the Trondheim Table Tennis Club in Norway. I haven’t watched ESPN in years so I don’t know if “getting on SportsCenter” is as big a deal as it used to be, but if so, this should get on SportsCenter.

See also the table tennis volley that sounds like the Super Mario Bros theme song and The Community of the Tables.

Jordan Peele’s ‘Candyman’ Confirmed and Set for 2020 Release!

by Brad Miska
Emahlstadt

been meaning to go back and watch the OG candyman, but it's not freely streaming on any service and i dunno if i wanna pay $5 to rent candyman. candyman 2, seems to be everywhere though.

This past September, Bloody Disgusting exclusively broke the news that Jordan Peele‘s Monkeypaw Productions would be producing a remake to the Bernard Rose-directed Candyman, a chilling urban horror film adapted from Clive Barker‘s “Books of Blood” short story “The Forbidden”.  This has been confirmed this afternoon with news that it is being billed as a “spiritual sequel” that returns to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood.

“Urban” had a dual meaning in that the original adaptation was moved from England to the now demolished Cabrini–Green public housing development in Chicago, while the antagonist is an urban legend in himself, the Candyman (played by Tony Todd), an artist and son of a slave who had his hand severed and was then murdered (with bees, of course) by his lover’s father. Released in 1992, the film spawned two sequels, the latter being direct-to-video.

While lesser known among the horror icons, Candyman is easily one of the scariest; he can be summoned by saying his name five times while facing a mirror. No word on if Todd will reprise his role.

Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) will be directing from a screenplay by Peele and Win Rosenfeld, adds Deadline.

“The original was a landmark film for black representation in the horror genre,” said Peele in the press release. “Alongside Night of the Living DeadCandyman was a major inspiration for me as filmmaker — and to have a bold new talent like Nia at the helm of this project is truly exciting. We are honored to bring the next chapter in the Candyman canon to life and eager to provide new audiences with an entry point to Clive Barker’s legend.”

MGM will release this new film on June 12, 2020.

New GVMERS Doc Looks Back at ‘Dead Space’

by Pat Torfe
Emahlstadt

yeah... i'm gonna go back and play all these games again.

I hate bringing up old wounds, but one year on, and Dead Space developer Visceral Games’ demise is still a bit raw. And with the original game turning a decade old last month, it’s still sad to look back and see what the franchise was, and what it could’ve been.

Documentarians GVMERS certainly thought so, and after their awesome documentary on The Rise And Fall of Silent Hill, the group is back with a new documentary on (what else?) the Dead Space series. Covering the entire series (including its spinoffs and animated adaptation), the documentary is another solid half hour look at a series that deserved better than what it eventually got.

The inevitable question of whether we’ll see Isaac and company again remains to be seen, as that’s all up to what EA decides to do with a franchise that horror gamers loved until death.

Well, maybe not so much Dead Space 3, but you get what I’m saying.

"My [Fallout 76] character has permanent godmode, and Bethesda doesn't seem to care"

by noreply@blogger.com (John)
R/fo76:
my character is currently nearly level 100, and just hit the cap limit - so what the heck am I supposed to do besides actually starting to make all content in the game trivial? I'm really frustrated and I have no idea what i'm supposed to do - it seems that they can't even slay my character for me, or at least didn't mention that even though that's practically what was I begging for in the ticket - but i'm unsure if it was a person replying, or simply some automated answer.

I'm just writing this because i'm frustrated, and I really have no clue on how to fix the issue to allow myself to progress again both gear wise, and story wise. Some of the given mutations right now are twisted muscles / talons - so my actual spec of rifles is somewhat nerfed when I cannot cure these ever so i've just been running around melee smacking things without any melee perks since Friday, which isn't necessarily fun anymore.
Fallout 76 is already down to $35 at Amazon.

Oklahoma QB Kyler Murray won’t say if he has respect for Texas QB Sam Ehlinger’s game

by Wescott Eberts
Emahlstadt

lol. what a punk ass bitch.

Once again, the Heisman candidate can’t even manage the most minimal attempts at sportsmanship.

This time, there might not even be a post-game handshake at all.

After an exchange in the Cotton Bowl during which Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Kyler Murray appeared to brush off Texas Longhorns quarterback Sam Ehlinger following the 48-45 Texas victory, Murray was asked about Ehlinger on Monday:

Neither quarterback was willing to comment on what happened back in October following that game, but Murray did speak about it on Monday before offering his “no comment” in regards to respecting Ehlinger’s game.

“If we would’ve won the game, I wouldn’t have run up to him in that moment,” Murray said, according to ESPN’s Jake Trotter.

Just go ahead and cancel all post-game handshakes ever, then, and don’t expect any minimal attempts at sportsmanship from Murray. Ever.

Ex-KU coach Beaty to help Texas prep for OU

Video Game Developer is Currently Working on a Retro-Style, 8-bit ‘Mandy’ Game!

by John Squires
Emahlstadt

boy howdy

The Nicolas Cage-starring Mandy, directed by Panos Cosmatos, has really taken the horror world by storm this year, almost instantly winning a cult-like following in the wake of it being unleashed to the masses. And it’s not hard to see why, as the gorgeous, ultra violent Mandy is unquestionably one of the most unique and visionary horror films of the year.

Mandy has been spawning all kinds of awesome fan art, and up next, it’s even getting an unofficial video game! Game designer Abel Alves is behind this one, done up in the 8-bit style.

On Twitter, Alves notes that the game is currently a “work in progress,” and he’s thus far shared an image of the title screen and a tease of the bonus stage, featuring Cheddar Goblin!

When this is ready to be played, we’ll be sure to let you know!

[Video] Ruby Rose’s Batwoman Arrives in Teaser Trailer for The CW’s “Arrowverse” Crossover Event

by John Squires
Emahlstadt

for all you weirdos who think this chick is super hot...

We cannot wait to see Ruby Rose as Batwoman in The CW’s upcoming Arrowverse event, titled “Elseworlds,” which could lead to her take on the character getting her own show.

In the meantime, check out the first footage of Rose’s Batwoman below!

EW recently detailed, “This year’s crossover includes The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl. Rose will make her debut as Kate Kane’s masked alter-ego in the middle Arrow hour, which sees Oliver (Stephen Amell), Barry (Gustin), and Kara (Melissa Benoist) travel to Gotham City to track down Arkham Asylum doc John Deegan (Lost‘s Jeremy Davies). In the scene depicted above — which EW was on set to watch — Batwoman uses her grapple hook and Batarang to stop two inmates from escaping Arkham Asylum, and saves Green Arrow and Cisco in the process.”

This year’s Arrowverse event, “Elseworlds,” begins Sunday night, December 9.

The SMO: What a turnaround this season has been

by william.curry
Emahlstadt

pretty cool

Obligatory reminder: The Sunday Morning Optimist does not deal in logic or reason. It does not care about facts or figures. It is an emotional overreaction to the preceding game.

Regardless of how the rest of this season plays out -- barring a potential loss to Kansas which I will, for the moment, pretend is impossible (I know this is an absurd assumption) -- I think we need to recognize just what a success this year has been.

Crazy to think after the opening loss to Maryland that we’d be sitting here -- the week of Thanksgiving -- with meaningful football still to be played.

Kudos to everyone who has made this turnaround possible.

It starts at the top. University of Texas president Greg Fenves deserves a ton of credit for recognizing the error of his predecessor’s ways and cutting ties with former athletics director Steve Patterson before it was too late.

Still, Fenves didn’t rush and hire just anyone. He waited for the right candidate to show up. And boy, did he knock it out of the park with his next permanent athletics director.

If you want to understand the impact of new Texas AD Chris Del Conte, just read a few of the emails I received about the atmosphere at DKR on Senior Night -- a game that, for too long, has been plagued with empty seats and embarrassing losses.

Bert:

The atmosphere inside DKR last night was unlike any game I can recall. And I’ve been to a lot. There was an air of mass euphoria pretty much from start to finish. Gone were the tension and teeth-gnashing that have become so prevalent in that stadium over these last 9 years in the wilderness. I’m sure it had something to do with WVU losing and opening the door for us right before the game started, but people also just generally seem to love watching this team play. The team and CDC have clearly put so much work into making the football good again, and the crowd seemed to genuinely appreciate that. When they started blasting Journey and everyone sang along and raised their phone lights, it truly felt like we were all living out the words to that chorus. It was magical — almost dream-like, really.

Gurdev:

The atmosphere at DKR last night was different. It wasn’t like Tulsa where it went from electric to holding your breath until the clock hits 0:00. It wasn’t like USC and TCU which were loud and stayed loud throughout. It wasn’t like Baylor where a good chunk of the students went to ACL and the heat took away from the game. It wasn’t like West Virginia where with 16 seconds left the crowd went speechless and the outlook of the game drastically changed. This was something else.

This was a crowd that knew the team dominated in all aspects of the game for all four quarters. This was a crowd that knew that this would be the last home game of a season where there was noticeable improvement from the team. This was a game where the tensions were eased and “having fun” became a priority in the stands. It was evident during “Don’t Stop Believing” with the light show. It was evident during a completely separate light show produced by the fans. It was evident when 100,000+ all sang “Livin’ on a Prayer” after the speakers cut the music and play on the field resumed. It was magical, and that’s something you couldn’t say about DKR for a while (I’m currently a sophomore here and have attended all the home games last season and this season).

Kevin (HopkinsHorn from way back when):

I’ve been attending games at DKR for over a quarter of a century now. Last night, for the first time, the ideal DKR experience of my imagination was matched by reality. A truly magical evening of 100,000 happy Texans having the time of their lives. The spontaneity and sheer joy of Don’t Stop Believing was something I never thought I could see there. (And the Living On A Prayer moment was pretty awesome as well!) And what was most amazing was that this all came together for a random November game for a good-but-not-great Texas game against Iowa State.

Joshua:

Thank you so much for the opportunity to describe last night’s game.

It was electric.

My and my buddy Dave arrived at the stadium right as the gates opened and we loved every minute of it. The band. The fans. The football team. It was something else. I haven’t seen DKR like that in several years.

I know it’s a meme to say that Texas is back, but I’m quite serious when I say that Texas might legitimately be back. It really feels like it. It feels authentic. It feels like Texas has finally righted the ship. And yeah, next year there will be some drop off in production because of talent we’re losing to graduation, but it feels like we’ve got real momentum in this program for the first time since 2009.

Alex:

Here’s something that might be worth mentioning in an article y’all write about the fan atmosphere at this game.

I was part of the Longhorn Alumni Band at this game. Last night was one of the most special halftime experiences for the 700 participating members of the Longhorn Alumni Band and the 300+ members of the Longhorn Band. I started in LHB in 2008 and for the first time in as long as I can remember, the end of the show had the Longhorn Band come on the field WITHIN the Alumni Band formation, as opposed to in a separate block. We truly were one big band together, which meant a lot for Longhorn Band “legacies” like me (my Dad was in LHB in the 60s and 70s). Participation in LHB has been down the past few years, and it’s experiences like this (as well as an improved on-field product from the football team) that are going to bring it back!

LHB was also where I met my wife, and we both agreed yesterday that the halftime and the atmosphere in the stands were some of the most special we’d ever experienced at DKR. A great game for #500!!!

Del Conte’s positive impact deserves its own post.

We also have to thank Tom Herman for what he’s done with this team. When Charlie Strong left Austin, his final message for fans was “the cake is baked.” In retrospect, this could not have been further from the truth.

False assumptions about how quickly Texas could win left a sour taste for fans after Herman’s debut loss against Maryland in 2017. What we didn’t recognize -- and recognize now -- was just how far this team was from playing good football.

Herman has righted the ship. Most successful coaches see their first promising season at a new school in their second year. This year has been far more than promising. It has been an unabashed success.

What this staff will be able to sell this offseason to recruits will be more than speculation based on a name brand -- I am excited for what the last few weeks of recruiting will have in store for this team.

In week one, I called Herman a snake oil salesman. This is a mea culpa. Herman is the real deal.

I also have to thank Sam Ehlinger for bringing some moxie and attitude to the quarterback position in Austin for the first time in a very long time.

Ehlinger is the perfect quarterback for Texas. A kid who grew up loving the Longhorns and who understands how important Texas football is to so many Texans. If a kid has this background and can play power-five college football, go recruit him -- regardless of star-ranking.

He’s got a little of Baker Mayfield’s spark in him. Attitude like that spreads like wildfire across a football team. If Ehlinger knows he can win, so does everyone else. This turnaround isn’t possible without him. He’s going to be really special the next two years.

I’ve always loved Texas wide receivers. From Roy Williams to Limas Sweed, Jordan Shipley to Quan Cosby, the position has always produced the fan-favorites of my childhood.

Well, move over guys, because I don’t think I’ve ever been a fan of a Texas wide receiver like I have been one of Lil’Jordan Humphrey.

He’s the best wide receiver in college football. There is a lot of hyperbole in the SMO -- but this is unequivocal truth. No wide receiver impacts their team more than LJH. Leaving him off post-season award lists is asinine and says more about the award committee than it does about Humphrey.

Hopefully we get one more year of LJH, but even if we don’t, he’s earned a fan for life.

Congratulations to all 2018 Longhorn seniors. You have been part of something truly special -- the turning point for Texas football.

It’s no longer a national joke. It’s no longer in the gutter. It’s on the right path again -- thanks to all of you. When we look back at the turnaround of Texas football, that’ll have as much impact as any championship.

Now go beat Kansas (please God) and spoil OU’s season one more time.
