Band aid: With a determination of methylammonium lead iodide perovskite crystallographic transitions under pressure, in situ laser-excited photoluminescence suggests a reduction in band gap in the tetragonal phase with increasing the pressure up to about 0.3 GPa and then an increase in band gap in ReO3-type cubic phase up to a pressure of 2.7 GPa, a result that is supported by DFT calculations.

Printed flexible photodetectors based on 2D inorganic perovskites with atomic thickness show excellent photosensing with fast rise and decay response times. As-synthesized nanosheets can easily be dispersed in various solvents, leading to large-area, crack-free, low-roughness, flexible films after printing. This study demonstrates that all-inorganic perovskite CsPbX3 nanosheets as a new class of 2D semiconductors have huge potential for flexible optoelectronic applications.

An appropriate solution is suggested for synthesizing wafer-scale, continuous, and stoichiometric MoS2 layers with spatial homogeneity at the low temperature of 450 °C. It is also demonstrated that the MoS2-based visible-light photodetector arrays are both fabricated on 4 inch SiO2/Si wafer and polyimide films, revealing 100% active devices with a narrow photocurrent distribution and excellent mechanical durability.

Hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite materials have risen up as leading components for light-harvesting applications. However, to date many questions are still open concerning the operation of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). A systematic analysis of the interplay among structural features, optoelectronic performance, and ionic movement behavior for FA0.83MA0.17Pb(I0.83Br0.17)3 PSCs is presented, which yield high power conversion efficiencies up to 20.8%.

On page 3366, P. M. Beaujuge and co-workers describe homo-tandem solar cells constructed by stacking identical subcells solution-processed from blends of the wide-bandgap polymer donor PBDTTPD and the fullerene acceptor PCBM, which achieve power conversion efficiencies >8% and open-circuit voltages >1.8 V. The homo-tandem devices provide sufficient voltage to induce the dissociation of water in an electrochemical cell. The authors acknowledge Hyun Ho Hwang (Heno) for developing the artwork.

Highly efficient polymer solar cells with tandem structure are fabricated by using two excellent photovoltaic polymers and a highly transparent intermediate recombination layer. Power conversion efficiencies over 11% can be realized featured by a low-band-gap polymer with fine-tuned properties.

A novel mitochondrion-specific photoactivatable fluorescence turn-on bioprobe, named as o-TPE-ON+, is designed and readily prepared, operating through a new photoactivatable mechanism of photocyclodehydrogenation. This bioprobe exhibits unique photoactivation behavior in cells, and is applied to super-resolution imaging of mitochondrion and its dynamic investigation in both fixed and live cells under physiological conditions without any external additives.

Making contacts: Amphiphilic complexes 1 and 2 self-assemble into vesicle-like particles in water. The different hydrophilic axial ligands lead to different valence states and aggregation patterns of the Ru species for water oxidation. This is the first example for the regulation of O−O bond formation through supramolecular interaction of ancillary ligands.

A nonfullerene-based polymer solar cell (PSC) that significantly outperforms fullerene-based PSCs with respect to the power-conversion efficiency is demonstrated for the first time. An efficiency of >11%, which is among the top values in the PSC field, and excellent thermal stability is obtained using PBDB-T and ITIC as donor and acceptor, respectively.

A new category of deep-absorbing small molecules is developed. Optimized devices driven by mixed additives show a remarkable short-circuit current of ≈20 mA cm−2 and a highest power conversion efficiency of 9.06%. A multi-length-scale morphology is formed, which is fully characterized by resonant soft X-ray scattering, high-angle annular dark film image transmission electron microscopy, etc.
