Info on Adopting Lucy the cat and Polo the dog after the jump.

“Lucy was my Mom’s cat before we took her in last February when my mom’s Alzheimer’s progressed to the point where she was unable to properly care for Lucy any longer.
Lucy is a sweet, adorable cat who is very affectionate and playful. However, Lucy had never in her life lived with dogs before — and we have two of them! We have tried for eight months to help them get along, but it’s a lost cause. Lucy wants none of it and the doggies are just too curious. It’s a bad combination and we have to keep them separated at all times.
As you can see from her pictures, Lucy is very cute. We know she will make her new owner very happy — and that she, too, will be more happy in a home without dogs.
Please contact Chuck Westover at chuck.westover(at)gmail.com if you are interested in adopting Lucy. We want her to find a good living situation so badly that we will even let you take her for a trial period to see if she is right for you. She comes with anything you would need to care for her – fancy dome cat box, a window seat so she can keep an eye on the squirrels, and a bed (which she’ll probably only use when not trying to snuggle you). We’d be happy to provide some of her favorite food as well to make the transition as easy as possible on everyone, including Lucy.”

“My next door neighbor has been caring for Polo, a four-year-old pit bull mix, after the original owner moved out, abandoning him in crate in the basement. The back story is that the owner of the house, a 95 year-old-woman who had lived there since 1955, died without a will, and her family has been fighting over its disposition through the probate process.
Caught in the middle of family infighting is sweet Polo. My neighbor, the grandson who is acting a personal representative for his grandmother and is now caring for the house—and has been taking good care of Polo—can no longer take care of the dog because he is doing work several hours away. Consequently, with no other options, he ended up taking Polo to the shelter on New York Ave. WARL said they did not have space available. Polo is now at the shelter on NY Avenue.”

I know there are tons of animal lovers on PoPville, so I was hoping you could put up a post on DC area Blessing of the Animals events this weekend for the Feast if Sr. Francis of Assisi. I know the Washington National Cathedral and Franciscan Monastery host events, but are there any other churches with plans?”

Arlington Pet of the Week: Pretzel
This week’s Arlington Pet of the Week is Pretzel, a two-year-old mixed breed who was rescued this summer.
Here’s what owner Rachel — whose fiancee recently “recognized, by name” a previous Pet of the Week honoree — said about Pretzel.
Pretzel is a 2 year old hound/lab/we have no idea mix that we rescued from K-9 Lifesavers over three months ago. We were looking for a medium sized snuggle dog who also liked to play and go on runs. Pretzel has made an amazing couch companion and loves soft fleece blankets and putting all 50 pounds of her body weight on her humans.
Pretzel got her name because it is my long time favorite snack food and a name I picked out for my future dog when I was 10 years old. We’ve never met another Pretzel and love that she’s one of a kind. The huge heart shop spot on the side of her belly melted our hearts and matches her lovable nature.
Pretzel loves chewing! Luckily, she sticks to her toys and not our stuff (except a remote control, only once). She loves the adventure of getting a new toy and shredding it to pieces. She has many doggie neighbors and would play all day in our apartment’s dog park if she could. You can find her on long walks with us every evening along Columbia Pike.
The Arlington Pet of the Week is sponsored by Dogma Bakery, which has locations at The Village at Shirlington (2772 S. Arlington Mill Drive) and the Lee Harrison Shopping Center (2445 N. Harrison Street).

Arlington Pet of the Week: Mia
Our latest Arlington Pet of the Week is Mia, a beagle-chihuahua mix who was adopted earlier this year.
Mia has two protective big brothers and is a big fan of her doggie daycare center. Here’s what owner Taryn had to say about her:
Mia is a 9 1/2 month old Beagle Chihuahua that we adopted from Lost Dog Rescue in January. We met her at an adoption event and it was like she picked us. When picked her up she immediately fell asleep in our arms and any time we tried to set her back down into the pen with her litter mates she cuddled up even more into us, determined to never leave our side again. Needless to say she won.
She now has two big brothers, Joey and Leo whom absolutely adore her (she has them wrapped around her little paw). Leo is about 3 years old and has taken to being her protector and partner in crime and Joey who is the old man (11 year old lab/shepherd) lets her get away with so much more than really anyone else in the house. She has discovered a love for playing fetch and loves licking absolutely everything (hundreds and hundreds of times…)
She has lots of friends both human and furry. She can barely contain her excitement when heading to doggie daycare at Woofs in the morning (she’s learned my daily routine and will start whining with excitement when we get close to leaving the house) and has been known to make appearances as some of our favorite places in Shirlington for brunch or lunch with friends.
The Arlington Pet of the Week is sponsored by Dogma Bakery, which has locations at The Village at Shirlington (2772 S. Arlington Mill Drive) and the Lee Harrison Shopping Center (2445 N. Harrison Street).

A Resounding Apathy
Here’s the letter we wrote to Iowa City’s Public Art Program, to go along with our Donation Station art proposal:
Dear [name redacted],
In reply to the recent Call to Artists from Iowa City’s Public Art Advisory Committee, I’d like to submit two proposals (attached) for potential improvements to our downtown’s Donation Stations. I hope that they will help stimulate more public use of your amazing devices.
My first proposal (entitled “Buy or Die”) is a realistic resin sculpture of an armed Officer of the Peace. He has a Donation Station for a head, and his boot is resting on a homeless person.
This, I feel, would appeal to the Donation Stations’ target demographic: those in the economic and ethnic strata typically protected, rather than threatened & abused, by police. I’ve depicted the handsome, sturdy white officer dealing decisively with the type of decrepit menace that Iowa City’s Downtown Association has been laboring to remove from public sight.
Note that to reach the meter, patrons are encouraged to step directly onto the prone body of the derelict — I think this will be an enjoyable treat for the type of person Donation Stations appeal to.
My attachments include a front view of the sculpture, a side view, and also a close-up of the hand of the “service-resistant” homeless person, clutching his waiting-list ticket for the city’s “services.”
My second proposal (entitled “Gentrification Station”) is a bit more boldly metaphorical — the idea is to construct an interactive machine that is as dangerous, costly and inefficient as Iowa City’s taxpayer dollars will allow. When someone feels threatened by an undesirable taking up space on a public bench, they can just drop a quarter into the Donation Station’s slot — this starts the big metal gears churning, dragging the hapless bum into their grinding teeth to be painfully chewed up & dismembered.
I hope you agree that these proposals capture the spirit of this city project! I’m excited about the chance to enhance Iowa City’s public spaces with my art, and am eager to help the city make some badly needed improvements to the Donation Station’s public image.
Thank you for your consideration, and I look forward to hearing back from you! I also welcome any feedback on how I might be able to improve my proposals’ designs (which are now technically your designs, according to your attorneys).
For Art’s sake,
-Art Tumor
And here, received Monday evening, is their impressively unimpressed response (with typos left intact):
Hi Mr. Tumor –
I need to apologize as we are no longer orchestrating the Donation Station Public Art project. I did notice that the webpage is still live on the Public Art Program website and it should have been remove. I will have that done immediately.
Pending completion of the planning process for the Downtown Streetscape project, the program may be reinitiated if it is found to be something that is still of interest. If it is decided that the program should be pursued, I will certainly let you know.
I appreciate your interest and apologize for the confusion.
Your artwork is very passionate.
