How Much Do Dog Dental Cleanings Really Cost?

“Dear PoPville,

I just adopted a beautiful, five-year-old german shepherd from a rescue this weekend, and she is already has me wrapped around her paw. We don’t know too much about her past, but she was malnourished and came to her foster mom with horrible (and I mean horrible) teeth. We want to get them cleaned, but the all of the baseline quotes have been between $450 and $700, not including extractions (which can be up to $70 a tooth!).

I realize that vet care in DC is very expensive, but I was wondering if any readers had recommendations for affordable dental care. Though I am prepared to pay the higher price, I want to make sure that my dog gets quality care, not a rip-off.

Thanks!”

“Arya is a three legged pit mix that came up to my girlfriend in a hospital parking lot in rural New Mexico; most of her back leg was missing.

From what it sounds and looked like she survived a nasty attack from some hounds on or near a Navajo reservation. Convinced that sometimes the dog chooses you… my girlfriend took her in. An amputation and long plane ride later she rules our Takoma park condo from her iron doggy bed.

We are both Game of Thrones fans so we named her Arya; we felt it a good name for feisty pup that cheated death, escaped a hound and people often confuse her for a boy.”

‘Let’s Not Do Flip-Flops,’ Implores Clarendon Sign

by Ethan Rothstein

"Let's Not Do Flip-Flops" sign in Clarendon "Let's Not Do Flip-Flops" sign in Clarendon

Arlington residents have long been teased for their summer footwear fashion sense, but an anonymous, self-appointed member of the fashion police is hoping to change that.

A sign posted on N. Highland Street in front of Delhi Club implores passersby “This year let’s not do flip flops,” and it is signed, ungrammatically: “Thank you, an arlington county services message.”

So far, there is no indication of who posted the sign.

Fashion, however, might not be the only beneficiary of an anti-flip-flop trend; there could be health benefits as well. The flip-flops that can be seen adorning the feet and exposing the toes of many Arlington men and women as soon as the weather gets warm could actually be safety risks.

National Flip-Flop Day is June 19 this year. A smoothie cafe in Virginia Square annually gives everyone wearing flip-flops a free smoothie to celebrate the holiday.

Arboretum To Re-Open to the Public Seven Days A Week!!

by Prince Of Petworth

8703711966_988eb9d21f_z
Photo by PoPville flickr user Eric P.

Great news via Frozen Tropics from the USDA:

“On April 14, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) U.S. National Arboretum (USNA) will once again be open to the public seven days a week, its original operating schedule. USNA continued a full research schedule but reduced the public schedule by three days a week in 2013 due to reduced funding, closing to the public Tuesday through Thursday. The Arboretum is operated by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), USDA’s chief intramural scientific research agency.

“We are very pleased that the U.S. National Arboretum will return to its normal operating schedule on April 14,” said Chavonda Jacobs-Young, ARS Administrator. “In addition to the vital plant research conducted there, the Arboretum is also a source of relaxation and enjoyment for the public and visitors to Washington, D.C. We are thankful for the support of the Friends of the National Arboretum in helping us to restore the Arboretum’s normal operating schedule. It is a great example of well-functioning private/government partnership benefiting the public.”

Friends of the National Arboretum (FONA) is the principal private, nonprofit partner of USNA. FONA began raising funds following the 2013 schedule reduction to facilitate resuming USNA’s seven-day schedule. The funds raised by FONA will help pay for custodial, security, and public information services for the three days of operations over the next three years.

The 446-acre Arboretum is USDA’s research and education facility and a living museum. The Arboretum enhances the economic, environmental, and aesthetic value of ornamental and landscape plants through long-term, multi-disciplinary research, conservation of genetic resources, and interpretative gardens and exhibits.

It is dedicated to serving the public and improving our environment by developing and promoting improved floral and landscape plants and new technologies through scientific research, education programs, display gardens, and germplasm conservation.

This year, the Arboretum is also home to a nesting pair of bald eagles, the first since 1947. Staff first noticed the nesting pair in early January on the south side of Mount Hamilton, in the Arboretum’s Azalea Collection, watching the pair make trips back and forth to the nest site. The eagles’ behavior changed towards the end of January, when one started sitting on the nest at all times, while the other searched for food to feed its mate. This was an indication that the pair was now caring for eaglets. It is unknown at this time how many eaglets are in the nest.

The USNA is taking steps to protect the nesting pair of eagles and minimize disturbances. People, noise, and related distractions in the vicinity of a bald eagle nest can cause the nesting pair to abandon their nest and eaglets. USNA has restricted access to an area within approximately 660 feet around the nesting site during the critical nesting period, ending around mid-June.

Each season provides new experiences for visitors. Spring arrives with the appearance of woodland wildflowers. From magnolia blossoms to miniature daffodils to cherry blossoms, fragrance graces the grounds. Summer brings daylilies and crape myrtles, welcoming the heat of summer with showy, resilient blooms. In the fall, tree leaves transition from summer green to a range of rich yellows of tulip poplar and hickory to the bright red of black gum and the purplish red of sweet gum and dogwood. While many think of winter as cold and remote, it also brings calm and quiet. Snow and ice transform the gardens into a jeweled landscape. The ‘Sparkleberry’ hollies (developed by scientists at the USNA) sparkle with brilliant red berries.

There are a number of specialized collections at USNA including the Asian Collections, Fern Valley, The Native Plant Collection, and the ever-popular Azalea Collections. The public is encouraged to visit the USNA Web site to learn more about hours of operation, visitor services, collections, and upcoming USNA events and activities.”

From the Forum – Hilltop Bar & Restaurant

by Prince Of Petworth

Hilltop Bar & Restaurant:

“So, whatever happened to this place opening up?

There has been hype around this bar since I moved to DC almost 3 years ago. Last August I had an Uber driver and he overhead me speaking about Hilltop. It turned out he was actually one of the owners. He told us he has had some permit issues, but everything was good to go and was hoping to open up in January or February. It is now April, and the only sign of life I have seen is they have painted over the graffiti on the front of their building, but not the side. Does anybody have any idea what is going on with this place?”

Ed. Note: I’m told they are still planning on opening and I see the patio area as a good sign but yeah this is taking way longer than originally anticipated.

“Passover Meets Easter Lamb-a-palooza” at Star and Shamrock

by Prince Of Petworth

star_shamrock_h_street
1341 H Street, NE

From a press release:

“Easter is linked to Jewish Passover by more than just yearly calendar proximity. In many languages, the words for “Easter” and “Passover” are identical, with both symbolically celebrating spring, hope, and rebirth, regardless of religion. In their long-continued tradition of bringing together people, cultures and religions, Washington DC’s premier Jewish-Irish bar/restaurant announced today plans to again make this connection with their first-ever “Lamb-a-palooza” Easter Meets Passover holiday weekend celebration, as part of their month-long Spring Shenanigans Simcha Festival.

The festivities begin at 5pm on Friday, April 3rd and run through Sunday, April 5th, offering non-traditional Passover Seder dinners, holiday-inspired brunches, and specialty cocktails. Friday and Saturday night’s multicultural Seder Plate-mirroring dinner menu features classic Matzo Ball Soup, a garden-fresh Romaine & Green Onion Salad with Spicy Horseradish Dressing, savory Herb-Roasted Lamb Chops served with Sauteed Swiss Chard & Shallots, Roasted Rosemary Potatoes, a Pickled Egg, Fruit & Honey Haroset and–with a final nod to the no-flour Passover tradition, freshly baked house-made Matzo Bread. Saturday and Sunday morning’s Brunch menu continues to play on both holidays, featuring Jewish & Irish hybrid dishes such as Beef Salami & Eggs, House-Smoked Salmon with Eggs, Tomatoes & Onion, Lamb Sausage & Egg Irish Breakfast, a “Sunny Side Up” Lamb Burger, Cream Cheese Omelets and Matzo Brei. And finally, to wash it all down, Star and Shamrock Bar Manager, Gene Barnett, will be unveiling his Irish whiskey and Manischewitz “Guilt Chaser” craft cocktail, with an enhanced selection of Kosher, California Cabernets and Chardonnays throughout the weekend.

Star and Shamrock’s famous frontman, co-owner, Jason Feldman, offered, “We have always stuck by the notion that there is more in common with these two cultures than most people think. We love celebrating the similarities with a bit of irreverency. Star and Shamrock’s story is more than just kitsch, it’s about our traditions and history. So, if you’re wondering whether you should go to Easter dinner at your mother-in-law’s during Passover or if it’s okay to eat matzo and peeps, our ‘Passover Meets Easter Lamb-a-palooza’ has your answer.”

For additional information on this and other Spring Shenanigans Simcha Festival celebrations, such as Star and Shamrock’s upcoming five-year-anniversary party on the weekend of April 16th, as well as various smaller parties in between, please visit www.StarandShamrock.com/SpringShenanigans.”

The Whole Foods would be a big deal for the neighborhood, which JBG has recently been dubbing the “north end of Shaw.

The switch from Harris Teeter to Whole Foods also makes sense in the context of the other retail offerings coming to the neighborhood: JBG recently announced that hip eyewear retailer Warby Parker, luxury watchmaker Benrus and several other new-to-D.C., high-end retailers would be coming to The Shay, one of its other residential buildings nearby.

New Sexual Assault Hotline Launches in Arlington

by Ethan Rothstein

Doorways for Women and FamiliesVictims of sexual assault in Arlington have a new number to call for support when they are most vulnerable.

Doorways for Women and Families, a nonprofit designed to support women and children who suffer from domestic violence and homelessness, launched the hotline to pair with its 37-year-old, 24-hour domestic violence hotline.

The hotline’s number is 703-237-0881.

Like the domestic violence hotline, victims can call in and Doorways partners with Arlington County to provide resources, such as shelter or police support.

“We’re pleased to partner with Doorways for Women and Families on this important resource for our community,” County Board Chair Mary Hynes said in a press release. “Doorways’ track record with the domestic violence hotline has been outstanding, providing victims with expert advice and linkages to needed services. By expanding hotline services to include sexual assault, we will again tap into Doorways’ expertise and knowledge to quickly and effectively link people to vital community services and resources.”

The hotline will pair Doorways with the Arlington County Police Department, the Arlington Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office and Department of Human Services. Among the services provided will be Commonwealth’s Attorney accompaniment during hospitalization for victims — a frequently traumatic event, Doorways said.

“We will play an important role in our community’s response, but it is one of many,” Doorways Executive Director Caroline Jones said. “Now is the right time to intentionally define our community’s coordinated response as we are seeing record numbers of people reaching out for our help — realizing they no longer have to face these issues in silence and shame.”

The full press release announcing the new hotline can be read after the jump.

ARLINGTON, VA. – After 37 years of providing Arlington residents with a 24-hour hotline and emergency response for domestic violence, Doorways for Women and Families is expanding to offer these services to survivors of sexual assault in our community.

Recognizing the need for a comprehensive, single emergency response for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence, and after conducting a thorough selection process, Arlington County has chosen to partner with Doorways for Women and Families to provide this much needed community response.

“We’re pleased to partner with Doorways for Women and Families on this important resource for our community,” said County Board Chair Mary Hynes.

Doorways has operated Arlington’s 24-hour Domestic Violence Hotline and Safehouse for nearly four decades. “While sexual assault and domestic violence are unique in many ways, survivors of these experiences share the need for a timely, well informed response. Access to police and legal assistance, medical assistance, counseling, safety planning and education, advocacy and accompaniment, and safe shelter are critical elements in helping survivors move forward. Getting to all of these begins with a call for help- a call that must be answered quickly and at any time of day or night.” Caroline Jones, Doorways’ Executive Director.

Beyond the 24-hour hotline response for survivors, Doorways will be partnering with the Arlington Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office to provide hospital accompaniment for survivors. “Going through a sexual assault exam can be extremely traumatic. Our staff and volunteers are trained to provide women and men in these difficult circumstances with counseling, compassion and referrals to our community partners who share in this response.” Claudia Zaborsky, Doorways’ Domestic & Sexual Violence Program Director.

This new, comprehensive hotline unites many agencies working to care for people impacted by domestic and sexual violence. Doorways will proudly partners with the Arlington County Department of Human Services – Violence Intervention Program, Arlington’s Victim Witness Department and Arlington Police and Sheriff’s Departments.

“We will play an important role in our community’s response, but it is one of many. Now is the right time to intentionally define our community’s coordinated response as we are seeing record numbers of people reaching out for our help – realizing they no longer have to face these issues in silence and shame.” Caroline Jones, Doorways Executive Director.

Courthouse Beer Garden Opening This Month

by Ethan Rothstein
V.w.verweij

This is preposterous.

Courthaus Social logo from Facebook

Velocity 5 in Courthouse has been closed for weeks, but on April 13 it will be reborn as Courthaus Social.

The “American beer garden” concept at the sports bar space at 2300 Clarendon Blvd has been in the works for years, but owners Fito Garcia and Nema Sayadian are completing the final buildout now, preparing to open in less than two weeks.

“Courthaus Social is the perfect spot for a happy hour, a pit stop en route to the city or a final destination to spend an entire evening,” Garcia said in a press release. “Our beer garden is dedicated to remaining an establishment that delivers unforgettable experiences to every guest. Whether you live in Arlington or are here for a few days… Grab a boot and sip, savor, and share in the spirit of beer and great food.”

Velocity 5 in CourthouseGarcia indicated the doors may open a few days before April 13 for a soft opening, but said on that Monday, Courthaus Social will be ready to go, serving two-liter boots and steins of 30 beers on tap, with long benches for social seating.

Sayadian told ARLnow.com that the interior will look wildly different from the Velocity 5 the area has come to know.

“It’s night and day, a 180-degree difference,” he said.

Garcia said the beer garden will have “life-size games” and will be community-focused, focusing on Virginia breweries and “humanely raised, free range” meats. It will be open from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 a.m. daily.

W-L Student Goes 5-for-5 in Ivy League Acceptances

by Ethan Rothstein

Brandi Moore with her 13 college acceptance letters

Brandi Moore is far from your typical high school student.

Most days, she goes to bed at midnight or later to study or finish. Some days, she wakes up at 5:00 a.m. to get in a few extra hours of studying before attending classes at Washington-Lee High School. In the evenings or on weekends, you can find her performing in one of a handful of theater groups — at school or otherwise — or volunteering to clean up streams and mark sewer grates.

High-achieving students, especially in Arlington, are hardly news. But what makes Brandi stand out, her father George tells ARLnow.com, is her own self-possessed drive.

“I never had to push her to read or anything,” he said. “I used to have to tell her to stop reading and go to bed. I’ve never even had to look at her grades online. She just naturally absorbs stuff and wants to learn.”

Brandi’s hard work has paid off. This week, she received acceptance letters from all five Ivy League universities she applied to: Cornell, Brown, the University of Pennsylvania, Columbia and Harvard. Those letters came after she had already been accepted at eight other schools, making her 13-for-13 in college applications.

A month before her flood of Ivy League acceptance letters, Brandi said she received “likely” letters from four of the schools, something she said the Ivy League universities only send to a few hundred students.

“They helped the process a lot. I knew my fate would be decided, because I was already pretty sure I was getting in,” she said.

Before she got those “likely” letters, it was a different story. Her first letter and package was from Brown University in Providence, R.I., which had been her dream school since she was 8 years old.

“When we got a pretty sizeable package from Brown, we didn’t know what it was,” she said, referring to the piece of mail that came. After she opened it, “I lost it. I was really excited.”

The Moores live in the Columbia Heights neighborhood, and Brandi has risen through the ranks of Arlington Public Schools, from Campbell Elementary School, to Kenmore Middle and now Washington-Lee. The 18-year-old senior has narrowed down her choices to Brown and the Ivy League school that gave her the biggest financial package: Harvard. The family will be traveling to Cambridge, Mass., tomorrow to visit the oldest university in the United States.

“Harvard is really, really pushing her,” George Moore said. He added that the whole process has been “so strange,” because, after all, what parent expects Ivy League schools to fight over any student? Reed College in Oregon paid for her to fly across the country to visit the campus. “I knew something was going on when they flew her out there and paid for everything. I thought ‘something special’s going on here.’ It just sort of comes one after another. It’s hard to keep up.”

Brandi said she hopes to make her decision in the next week. Next year, she hopes to start studying biology or something in the life sciences, while keeping up with theater, her passion. Brown appeals to her because the school doesn’t have a core curriculum; students can take whatever classes they want. On the other hand, Harvard is Harvard.

Either way, it’s clear she’s ready for bigger and better things.

“Our classes in high school, there are kids who love what’s going on in the classroom, there are kids who don’t love it as much,” she said. “I’m excited about being in the class where everyone loves learning. I’m just generally excited to see what my limits are and what I’m really going to end up doing. I really want to find myself.”

Colony Club, Coffee, Beer and Ping Pong Club Opening Soon in Park View

by Prince Of Petworth

IMG_6285
3118 Georgia Ave, NW

I apologize in advance but this is one of the transformations that makes ramble because I’m so happy. First of all I had no idea it was gonna turn out so nice. I just thought Colony Club was gonna be a very bare bones ping pong hall. I was very very wrong. Their website says:

“Colony Club is a neighborhood coffee shop, bar, and ping pong club. We serve quality products in a friendly and approachable setting.

Located on historic Georgia Avenue in Park View, Washington, DC, Colony Club tries to capture an old-school vibe, and pay homage to the history of the street (including the family flower shop, pictured below).”

colony_club
Photo via Colony Club

Check out their beer/wine/spirits menu here and breakfast and bar snacks here.

So a bit more info – which I totally didn’t realize. They’ll be a proper coffee shop during the day. They’ll open Monday-Friday from 7am-11pmish (hours likely to change a bit based on what folks want) and 8am-midnight(ish) on the weekends. Coffee is ceremony. Pastries will come from Bakehouse (14th and T St, NW.)

As for the evenings – while they have a small wine and cocktail list – the focus will be on good beer. Four draft lines, four cans, four bottles and a small cellar list. and Porkslap will only be $3!

As for the ping pong – it’s upstairs. One table. The space wasn’t photo ready when I stopped by but they are very very close. And you could definitely get a feel for it. It reminds me of when Temperance Hall (now Looking Glass) first opened on Georgia. It doesn’t remind me of the same style but in that what a huge deal it is. There is nothing like this around the 3100 block of Georgia (all due respect to Bravo Bar which is great for different reasons.) This place is a game changer for this section of Georgia Ave. You will see very, very soon.

IMG_6286

I take this as a very good sign:

IMG_6287

This is so much nicer than I was expecting, just a taste, but wait till you see proper photos:

House Bill Proposes Renaming D.C. to Reaganstown in 2005

Believe me, this came as a shock to us as well when we came across an article in the Washington Post about renaming the nation’s capital after the 40th president, Ronald Reagan. The proposal came from Republican Congressman Henry Bonilla from South Texas.

This is one of those things where a member tried to slip something in, under the radar before summer recess, but luckily for D.C., consummate District defender, Congressman Tom Davis from Virginia (also a Republican) stepped in to block it and called it “ridiculous.” Were it not for the actions of Representative Davis, we might all be living in Reaganstown reading the blog Ghosts of Reaganstown, which doesn’t quite have the same ring to it.

Some in Congress thought it so absurd that they suggested we just call it Gippersville. Yep, it’s morning in America, welcome to Gippersville! Seriously? … rename the capital of the United States of America after Ronald Reagan? If we’ve learned one thing doing this blog over the last three years, it’s that truth is always stranger than fiction.

Like it or not, regardless of your political affiliation, most people agree that Ronald Reagan was an American icon.

If you remember, this was right around the time that Reagan passed away, so every Republican was trying to pay homage to their saint by renaming anything and everything after him. They succeeded at getting National Airport renamed for him, and mind you, renaming things ain’t cheap. Before you know it, there will be some giant monument to the man somewhere on the Mall.

Okay folks, now that you’ve read this entire thing, mouth agape with incredulity, we’ll share one last tidbit. Happy April Fools’ Day! Share this with your friends on Facebook and Twitter so they can be equally dismayed.

One final thing. So this is just slightly true, with a huge embellishment. Bonilla did propose renaming 16th St. NW after Reagan in 2005. That obviously didn’t happen, but the Washington Post did cover it. Seriously, that part did happen.

Local Woof: Is Your Dog Overweight?

Editor’s Note: The Local Woof is a column that’s sponsored and written by the staff of Woofs! Dog Training Center. Woofs! has full-service dog training, boarding, and daycare facilities, near Shirlington and Ballston.

More than half of the dogs in the U.S. are overweight. Much like with people, it is a result of too much processed food, large portion sizes, and just plain overeating.

What amazes me the most about this epidemic is the number of dog owners who simply do not know that their dog is overweight.  Check out this awesome chart at projectpetslimdown.com.  Once you know your dogs body condition score (BCS) you can make adjustments to their feeding.

The easiest way to tell if your dog is overweight is to feel for their ribs. I recommend placing your thumbs on your dogs back bone and using your fingers to feel for the ribs. You should be able to feel your dogs ribs through no more than about a 1/4 inch of skin, muscle and fat. If you cannot easily feel your dogs ribs, without having to push down, then your dog is likely overweight.

If you do find that your dog is overweight, simply cut down on the amount of food they get per day and increase their exercise. Sound familiar? A great way to supplement your dog’s meal is with green beans. Frozen or canned green beans help your dog feel full without adding too many calories.

Here are some common reasons our dogs end up overweight:

“But my vet says he’s fine”  If I hear this one more time… Please ask your vet for an honest opinion about your dog’s weight. I do not know why veterinarians are so afraid of talking about a dogs weight. I suspect it’s because it can be a touchy subject and they are afraid of losing your business. But in the interest of the health of our dogs (and cats), I implore vets to be more forthcoming and honest about talking about weight issues.

“The bags says to feed 4 cups a day” – I hate dog food bag instructions. The idea that every dog in a certain weight range should eat the same amount of food per day is ludicrous. A 12-year-old dog that weights 35 pounds should be eating nowhere near the same amount as a 35-pound dog who is 2 years old and hikes three times a week. In addition, keep in the mind that the goal of the company is to sell you more food. The faster you feed, the faster you buy another bag. The only measure of how much a dog should eat a day is their body condition. Just like people.

“She’s still just a puppy” – Where puppyhood ends can be debated, but the truth is that most dogs have reached 75 percent of their growth potential by the time they are 6 months old. The exception, of course, is large breeds (German shepherd size and larger), who may take up to 12 months to reach full size. That means that your dog’s growth will start to slow somewhere about 5 months of age. Most puppies start to pack on the pounds around 7 to 8 months of age because they are still being fed the same amount that they were eating when they were 5 months old.

“He’s not fat, it’s just his hair” – Yes, fluffy dogs can hide behind their fur more easily, but please don’t use it as an excuse. By palpating your dogs ribs you can just as easily asses the condition of a heavy-coated dog.

Bottom line, help your dog feel better and live longer by keeping them in shape. They’ll love you for it!
