americasgreatoutdoors:

All this week, we are featuring some of the spectacular places in America’s Last Frontier: Alaska. First up is Bering Land Bridge National Preserve.

A visit to Bering Land Bridge can feel like traveling back in time. The Bering Land Bridge provided a pathway for plants, animals and people to cross from the old world to new. Wildlife like the muskox remind us of our ancestors and how geography has shaped humankind. These iconic herbivores sport curved horns and can weigh between 400-800 pounds. Although their populations have fluctuated over the last century, today they number around 3,800 in the state of Alaska. National Park Service Photo.

Nope, nope, I’m sorry I tried. I looked at it from many different angles – with the building at the corner in the frame – I’m sorry I still don’t like it. I really did try though.  And to be honest the photos look better here than it did in person – you can’t really see the cinder block mass on the sides…  Awesome location though!

“Caught Tumbleweed from Petworth in a compromising position.”

“This is Tessa, and she’s an adoptable 13 yo Boxer mix from City Dogs Rescue. I’ve been fostering her and she is just the sweetest, easiest dog. Fully housetrained, quiet, waits to be invited before jumping up on couch/bed, just wants to nap and snuggle all day long. She’s perfectly healthy but was sadly surrendered by her owner in North Carolina and was going to be put down at the shelter until City Dogs pulled her out.

She is the greatest and I’m just really hoping she can find a forever family that will give her all that love back!”

A quick response by nearby police officers and several citizens who called 911 we were able stop the involved parties.

As a result, we recovered two handguns.”

A resident inquired – “Were arrests made? Were they shooting for fun or in process of other crimes?”

Great Adaptations – A kid’s book about evolution

by weinersmith

Zach Weinersmith and I contributed to Tiffany Taylor’s children’s book about evolution. Tiffany worked with scientists to create Seuss-style stories about evolutionary adaptations, and various artists created illustrations to go along with each story. Zach and I worked with Tiffany to share the story of how Euhaplorchis californiensis manipulates the behavior of California killifish (Fundulus parvipinnis). You can get the book on Amazon here, and they just made the pdf version of the ebook available for FREE here. Enjoy!

How To Get Americans To Pay Attention To Climate Change

by Alex Balk

It is clear at this point that the repeated warnings of scientists and other experts are not enough to break through the clutter and often intentional disbelief many people have regarding climate change, so I cannot think of any other way to force Americans to acknowledge its undeniable existence and catastrophic ramifications than by accompanying every report about it from now on with Nelly’s inescapable 2002 summer classic “Hot In Herre.” Eventually people will have to take note and will want to do something about the problem just to make it stop. You have a better idea? Yeah, that’s what I thought. Anyway, “the average global temperature for July 2015 was the highest for any month since record keeping began in 1880, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said. The first seven months of the year also had all-time global record highs.” Wherre is it getting hot? In herre. It’s getting hot in herre.

A Poem by Rebecca Wolff

by Mark Bibbins, Editor
Man Tits

Look at that pair,

on the one over there.
He’s young, skinny, low
muscle tone, poor, white, under-
educated . . . gazing
down
on a
path

in the little patch
of yard in front of his
unfavorably situated
rental where he stands, hands
on hips, mutable, conceivable
speculation on the next weekend
chore.

But his tits are the good
kind: fat, conical, pale against
the brown of his wife-beater tan,
nipples slightly shiny,
aureolated. Bouncy, native tits

like the ones you came to see.

Rebecca Wolff’s fourth collection of poems is One Morning—. from Wave Books. She is the founding editor of Fence and Fence books.

You will find more poems here. You may contact the editor at poems@theawl.com.

Famed D.C. Canine Romo Enjoying New Life in Arlington

by Mariah Joyce
Photo via Facebook Photo via Facebook Photo via Facebook

Romo the dog, a long time beloved fixture of the Adams Morgan neighborhood in D.C., is settling into his new life in Arlington.

The 150 pound bull mastiff/pit bull mix became well known in D.C. for his habit of sleeping near an open window in owner Tiffany Scourby’s condo. Passersby took to the droopy dog, and a Facebook page and Twitter account dedicated to Romo soon sprang up.

Romo, along with Tiffany and her husband Peter Scourby, moved to the Forest Hills townhouse community in the Arlington Ridge neighborhood earlier this summer. So far, Peter says Romo has taken to his new life outside of the city.

“He’s enjoying the space more,” said Scourby. “We went from 1,000 square foot condo to 3,000 square feet.”

Although Scourby says there aren’t any windows in the new home with quite the foot traffic of Romo’s Adams Morgan haunt, the pooch has been given a bed by a window and has scoped out prime napping spots around his new home.

The couple says that like their dog, they are enjoying the newfound space Arlington affords.

“I’m a Virginia boy,” said Scourby. “I like the ‘burbs, and I wanted space. There’s a country club down the street, and I can see the Washington Monument from my house.”

Romo’s Facebook page has more than 3,000 likes and counting, and since moving the couple has discovered that some of their new neighbors are long-time Romo fans.

“When we first got here, a neighbor we hadn’t met yet said, ‘Oh my God, that looks like that Romo dog!,'” said Scourby. “When we told her it was him, she just screamed. Apparently she was one of his followers on Facebook.”

The move to Arlington won’t be the only change for Romo this summer. Peter says Tiffany is eight months pregnant and is due this September.

“[Romo’s] gonna have a little brother soon,” he said.
