Echo chamber of outrage: Ars attends a climate skeptics’ summit

by Scott K. Johnson
syndicatedragon

I love the pic of cardboard gipper

“I accept that the planet has warmed,” said conservative columnist Mark Steyn from the podium. “And I rejoice that it is warm.”

Steyn was one of many speakers at the libertarian Heartland Institute's 10th “International Conference on Climate Change,” a major event for climate science contrarians. The two-day conference, held in mid-June at the classy Washington Court Hotel just a few blocks from the US Capitol, had all the trappings of an academic conference, but you wouldn’t mistake it for a Geological Society of America meeting. Tables set up outside the hotel’s main ballroom hosted conservative advocacy groups and think tanks like CFACT, the Ayn Rand Institute, and the Heritage Foundation (which attracted visitors with a life-size cardboard cut-out of Ronald Reagan). The audience contained some meteorologists but seemed mostly composed of retired couples with an interest in politics, along with a handful of state legislators.

The goal was to gather speakers—who, organizers frequently reminded the audience, were some of the most famous and well-respected experts in the world—who could arm attendees with the information they needed to take the Good Fight back out to the streets. A small number of the talks presented research into climate science, but most were arguments against climate policy based on economic impacts. In other words, imagine the opinion pages of The Wall Street Journal plus a podium.

True confessions: I wrote for an Internet content mill

by Ars Staff
syndicatedragon

Is this what Shawn is still doing?

They are the queries we type into Google at our lowest ebb, our souls screaming into the search bar:

"RETIRE WEALTHY"

"how to get a girl to like you"

"how to deal with divorce"

"male sexual enhancement"

"weight management Indianapolis"

"instant loans"

The list goes on; it's seemingly infinite. Such search terms offer insight into both our fears ("how bad is caffeine during pregnancy") and desires ("bronies"). And thanks to thousands of poorly paid freelance writers looking to pick up some extra cash or toiling for wages, the results we’re served in these vulnerable moments are often hastily scribbled, poorly written, ungrammatical filler text. This old world relic represents a time when getting to the top of Google rankings wasn’t dependent on the quality of information you supplied but how many people linked to your site.

This kind of text—the equivalent of fast food or hangover-friendly TV—is the preserve of content mills, an Internet subculture where for-hire workers are tasked with writing vast amounts of online copy for a pittance. Today, when more media outlets and self-publishing tools exist than ever before, such word factories somehow continue to exist.

The quotable Satoru Iwata: Nintendo’s late president, in his own words

by Kyle Orland

Most game industry executives, when they deign to speak to the public, drop into careful, manicured, business-focused management speak that's almost completely void of character or, indeed, information. Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata was different.

Yes, Iwata often spoke dryly about Nintendo's businesses realities, especially in the Q&A sessions that accompanied Nintendo's quarterly earnings calls. But in his 15 years as president of Nintendo, Iwata often opened up publicly in speeches, interviews, and a series of candid "Iwata Asks" interviews with his fellow Nintendo employees. Through these, Iwata often shared reminiscences of his time as a coder and developer for HAL Laboratories and Nintendo, offered intensely personal feelings about the state of game design, and urged the industry to push hard for more creativity.

Following Iwata's untimely death this weekend, we took a look back through these public statements and extracted some quotes that we feel best exemplified his life, philosophy, and management style. We believe this collection honors a CEO who was unique in the industry—and whose presence will be profoundly missed.

Miyamoto 'overcome with sadness' at Iwata's passing

by Steve Watts

The sudden passing of Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata has produced a variety of reactions from those inspired by his career and legacy, but another voice has now been added: his friend and colleague, Shigeru Miyamoto.

"I am surprised at this sudden news and overcome with sadness," Miyamoto said in a statement to IGN. "The entire development team at Nintendo will remain committed to our development policy which Mr. Iwata and we have been constructing together and to yield the development results which Mr. Iwata would appreciate."

Satoru Shibata, president of Nintendo of Europe, also released his own statement. "It is difficult to put into words the sadness we feel at this time. Mr. Iwata was a strong leader, a unique figure in the gaming industry and an important part of  Nintendo's history. He was a visionary in every sense of the word and we will miss him dearly," he said. "Just as Mr. Iwata challenged us to always push forward, we will ensure his legacy lives on through our ongoing work to always surprise and delight our fans. At this time our thoughts are with his family."

Miyamoto and senior managing director Genyo Takeda are taking control of the company's affairs in the interim while a new CEO is chosen. Miyamoto, a longtime game designer and producer on several projects, is considered a frontrunner for the role.

Animal Crossing spin-offs created to maximize amiibo potential

by Ashley King
syndicatedragon

For the picture...

animal-crossing-amiibo

In a recent interview with USGamer, Animal Crossing: New Leaf director Aya Kyogoku fielded several questions about the upcoming release of Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival for Wii U and Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer for Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo fans were notably critical of the Nintendo E3 presentation that revealed these two games, as many expected to see the Wii U version of Animal Crossing on the table.

Perhaps the most notable statement to come from the interview is that both Animal Crossing spin-off games were created to maximize amiibo potential for the series.

Both Happy Home Designer and Amiibo Festival are spinoffs of the Animal Crossing series, and that’s what we’re developing them as. One thing that we focused on was, “What kind of game play experience can we create using Amiibo figures and Amiibo cards?” We also went in with the approach that we didn’t want to be limited in the scope of what we can do based on what Animal Crossing in the past has been.

Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival received quite a bit of negative reaction online from fans, who felt like it was Mario Party repackaged with an Animal Crossing skin over the top. Kyogoku is quick to add that’s not the case for Amiibo Festival, as there’s less focus on the mini-games like Mario Party.

One of the main tenets of Mario Party is that you’re playing a board game and in between those board game moves, you play a mini-game and compete, and that’s a focus. For Animal Crossing, the focus is actually playing the board game within the village of Animal Crossing, so it’s not really focused on the mini games.

If you’d like to read the rest of the interview with Kyogoku, be sure to check it out here. What do you think of the two Animal Crossing games Nintendo has revealed this year? Will you be picking up either one of them, or any of the amiibo figures?

Yoshi’s Woolly World reviewed: A warm, woolly platforming hug

by Mark Walton
syndicatedragon

the screenshots still amaze me

With Yoshi's Woolly World finally being released in the US, we are rerunning this Ars Technica UK review from June.

Don't let the cutesy visuals deceive you: Yoshi's Woolly World is as challenging a platformer as anything to have come from Nintendo. This is a game that unashamedly plays on nostalgia, almost tricking you into thinking that maybe, just maybe, there's not a lot new to see or do within its delightfully bright and fluffy world. And sure, some occasionally obtuse level design and frustrating checkpoints mean that it doesn't quite reach the glorious heights of its genre-defining forebears. But even with its problems, Yoshi's Woolly World is so cute, and so mechanically refined—in that way only Nintendo platformers can be—that it's so very hard not to be taken in by its charms.

And hey, who wouldn't be charmed by a small green dinosaur that squeaks like a puppy and eats and poops balls of wool? Yes, Yoshi's Woolly World is what the kids call "totes adorbs," a striking mass of billowing fabrics and fluffy wool that's been stitched together to create a bright and colourful world. This aesthetic isn't new to Nintendo, debuting in the Wii platformer Kirby's Epic Yarn, but here it's been refined, the HD power of the Wii U rendering each intricate thread with startling clarity. It's an absolute joy to look at, and the Yoshis themselves (yes, there's more than one of them) are unbearably cute, leaping around the screen with a yelp and a flutter of their tiny woolly legs.

Dragon Quest 6: Realms of Revelation slimes iOS and Android today

by Ozzie Mejia

Square Enix has a special surprise for Dragon Quest fans today. The classic sixth game in the series and final installment of the Zenithian trilogy, Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation, is making its way to mobile devices today. Though the game was first released in Japan on the Super Famicom back in 1995, it did not find its way onto North American shores until 2010 when it hit the Nintendo DS.

For those that don't remember the story of Dragon Quest VI, the adventure follows a young Hero that sets out on a quest across the world and through the dangerous phantom realm. The Hero will recruit companions along the way, while mastering a slew of abilities. Players can also recruit and battle Slimes via the Slimopolis, with winners receiving rewards. Then there's the Slippin' Slime mini-game, which has been added for a little bit of levity.

Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation is available now on iOS through the App Store and on Android through the Google Play store for $14.99.

Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival is a party game for Wii U

I really hope this is just a prelude to a real AC game. This looks like it's primary purpose is to sell amiibo rather than being much of a game..

One of the new games showcased during Nintendo’s E3 conference featured amiibo we saw leaked yesterday. The new Animal Crossing amiibo will be for use in Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival, which is a party game that looks very similar to Mario Party and the random games and scenarios it has.

Nintendo didn’t have a specific release date for the new game beyond Holiday 2015.

Nintendo leaks new 8-bit Mario amiibo and Animal Crossing amiibo

by Ashley King

8-bit-mario-amiibo

With all the hype surrounding E3 and the announcement of several new amiibo, it’s not surprising to see an occasional leak. This one comes to us from Nintendo Spain, which sent out an email prematurely announcing the arrival of an 8-bit Mario amiibo that will be joining the host of already available Mario amiibos. If the silver & gold traditional Mario or the Super Smash Bros. fireball Mario aren’t your thing, you have the 8-bit amiibo to look forward to sometime this year.

The 8-bit Mario amiibo is a 30th anniversary celebration item, so it’s possible it could be a rare amiibo that’ll be hard to find. Also leaked in the email is a range of Animal Crossing characters, including everyone’s favorite, KK Slider. Check out the promotional image:

Are you excited for another wave of amiibo? It’s likely these will be part of Nintendo’s E3 presentation tomorrow.

Even with a VPN, open Wi-Fi exposes users

by Ars Staff
syndicatedragon

Don't forget to wipe out old, unsecured wifi connections in your phone

By now, any sentient IT person knows the perils of open Wi-Fi. Those free connections in cafes and hotels don't encrypt network traffic, so others on the network can read your traffic and possibly hijack your sessions. But one of the main solutions to this problem has a hole in it that isn't widely appreciated.

Large sites like Twitter and Google have adopted SSL broadly in order to protect users on such networks. But for broader protection, many people use a virtual private network (VPN). Most people, if they use a VPN at all, use a corporate one. But there are public services as well, such as F-Secure's Freedome and Privax's HideMyAss. Your device connects with the VPN service's servers and establishes an encrypted tunnel for all your Internet traffic from the device to their servers. The service then proxies all your traffic to and from its destination.

It's a better solution than relying on SSL from websites for a number of reasons: with a VPN, all of the traffic from your device is encrypted, whether the site you are visiting has SSL or not. Even if the Wi-Fi access point to which you are connected is malicious, it can't see the traffic. Any party that is in a position to monitor your traffic can't even see the addresses and URLs of the sites with which you are communicating, something they can do with SSL over open Wi-Fi.

Harvest Moon is coming to the Wii U

by Ashley King
syndicatedragon

Mobile, huh. Guess it depends on how much "compromise" there is for it...

harvest-moon-seed-of-memories

Today Natsume announced that the long-running Harvest Moon series is heading to the Wii U, as well as PC and mobile. This will also be the first Harvest Moon title to be announced for PC, iOS, and Android. Harvest Moon: Seed of Memories is supposedly inspired the old-school gameplay of the very first games that appeared on SNES and Nintendo 64.

The standard barnyard full of commitment will return, with cows, sheep, and chickens. However, players will be able to ride and care for a horse and have a dog as a pet. If the dog doesn’t suit you, Seed of Memories is adding a bobcat that you can tame over time for those who are more feline-inclined. So what’s the premise this time around?

Tasked with the job of revitalizing a farm, players will need to befriend the villagers in town to unlock the titular “Seeds of Memories”! Seeds can be unlocked in many ways, such as giving a villager their favorite item, catching a giant fish, or by raising their first cow. Players will need to be up to the challenge of collecting all of the Seeds of Memories!

In perhaps a nod to the Rune Factory series, Seeds of Memories will also feature cooking, fishing, foraging, and mining to upgrade their tools and use the highest quality items. Yearly contests and festivals are available and you have the option of ten marriage partners.

Are you happy to see Harvest Moon’s return to the Wii U?

Puzzle & Dragons Z will get free weekly content starting today

by Aaron Linde

The Nintendo 3DS' Puzzle & Dragons two-pack has a whole lot of puzzling action in its small package. But Nintendo isn't content to just let the package stand out on its own. During today's Nintendo Direct Micro, the company announced that one half of that package, Puzzle & Dragons Z, would start getting new weekly dungeon content at no extra charge.

The first of the new dungeons is available right now. Players must hit the Ranger HQ and connect to the Internet. There, they can download a free dungeon that will allow them to earn special monsters to help strengthen your team. Given that Puzzle & Dragons Z apparently has an entire second continent to explore, your team may need the assistance.

Puzzle & Dragons Z + Puzzle & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition are available as a single package on Nintendo 3DS now.

Puzzles & Dragons: Super Mario Edition demo hits the 3DS eShop today

by Ozzie Mejia

Puzzles & Dragons isn't exactly a traditional "match-3" puzzle game. There are several mechanics that make it stand out from something Bejeweled or even the more recent Pokemon Shuffle. Given that there are some things about it that take some getting used to, Nintendo is offering up a demo to half of their upcoming Puzzles & Dragons compilation package.

Puzzles & Dragons: Super Mario Bros. Edition has a demo out on the 3DS eShop right now. The idea in this game is to take the traditional Super Mario Bros. formula of overworld maps and individual stages and apply it towards a matching puzzle game. Players form parties of five and combat legions of Bowser's baddies, prior to facing the King Koopa himself.

The demo is available on the Nintendo eShop. The full Puzzles & Dragons Z/Puzzles & Dragons Super Mario Bros. Edition two-pack is set to arrive on May 22. For more about the package, check out our recent preview.

8-Bit Cuisine: Grand Theft Auto Cluckin' Bell Fried Chicken
