Using a Dyson hand dryer is like setting off a viral bomb in a bathroom
syndicatedragonWe have these things at work. I hate them. They're super loud and they DO spray water everywhere
(credit: Sorosh Tavakoli)
Bathrooms are a prime location for smearing disease-causing microbes all over your hands. Yet, despite societal pressures and prodding signage, a lot of people don’t clean their grimy mitts after a potty break. Some audacious folks just skip the sink all together, while others don’t wash for long enough (experts recommend singing “Happy Birthday” twice in your head) or omit the cleansing soap step. All of those sanitation-slackers threaten to spread disease—particularly in healthcare settings packed with vulnerable patients. But what the latter groups do to dry off their un-cleaned hands may end up setting off a germ bomb.
Researchers have long known that warm hand dryers can launch bacteria into the air—compared to dabbing with paper towels, which unleashes virtually none. But new jet air dryers, made by Dyson, are significantly more problematic—they launch far more viruses into the air, which linger for longer periods of time and reach much farther distances, researchers recently reported in the Journal of Applied Microbiology. This is particularly concerning because viruses, unlike many infectious bacteria, can easily maintain their infectiousness in the air and on surfaces, and just a few viral particles can spark an infection.
“The results of this study suggest that in locations where hygiene and cross-infection considerations are paramount, such as healthcare settings and the food industry, the choice of hand-drying method should be considered carefully,” the authors concluded.
Nintendo's Miitomo achieves 4M active users; earns over $280k per week
Miitomo launched in the US on March 31, and after nearly two weeks of being available on both iOS and Android devices, it appears Nintendo officially has a hit on its hands as the app is currently being enjoyed by four million active users and is earning $40,000 in daily revenue.
According to a Survey Monkey report, Miitomo achieved over 2.6 million downloads during its launch week and was downloaded an average of 370,000 times per day. On average, a user checks into Miitomo two to three times per day with a total of 7-8 minutes spent within the app itself.
What we’re curious to see is if Miitomo has longevity as its retention is a big question mark right now. Sure - we’re all enjoying learning about our friends and family by answering various questions, purchasing new clothes, and playing silly mini-games to earn even more clothing options. But whether or not this will be a new mobile social network that will take the world by storm is yet to be seen. In the meantime, what did you do last weekend?
No, thank you, Animal Crossing.

The Pokemon Trading Card Game Online Has A New Beta Version For Android Tablets, And Everyone's Invited
If you're around the same age as me, you fondly remember playing the Pokemon Trading Card Game (TCG for short) for hours in middle school. Or more accurately, you remember watching all the other kids play it because your parents couldn't afford to buy 10,000 licensed pieces of cardboard just so you could get a shiny Blastoise. (It's OK, I played the Game Boy Color version for vicarious thrills.) As it turns out, the Pokemon card game is still rolling along with a huge following, and now there's even an online digital version.

Encrypted WhatsApp messages frustrate new court-ordered wiretap

The US Department of Justice has opened another legal front in the ongoing war over easy-to-use strong encryption.
According to a Saturday report in The New York Times, prosecutors have gone head-to-head with WhatsApp, the messaging app owned by Facebook. Citing anonymous sources, the Times reported that "as recently as this past week," federal officials have been "discussing how to proceed in a continuing criminal investigation in which a federal judge had approved a wiretap, but investigators were stymied by WhatsApp’s encryption."
The case, which apparently does not involve terrorism, remains under seal.
[Deal Alert] T-Mobile & MLB Up The Ante For T-Mobile Customers This Year With A Free Subscription To MLB.TV Premium For All Subscribers ($110 Value)
syndicatedragonMaybe your dad can watch baseball on his phone while turning it on the tv really loud at the same time
T-Mobile and MLB have a marketing relationship that spans back several seasons. Since the beginning of that relationship, T-Mobile subscribers have received a free yearly subscription to MLB.TV At Bat – a paid mobile service that lets users listen to game broadcasts, follow live stats, and watch highlight replays. Normally $20 a season, it was a nice gift that baseball lovin' T-Mobile customers (myself included) appreciated.
This year, the gift for T-Mobile users is way better.

Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess Picross leaks ahead of My Nintendo launch
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD invaded Google Maps over the weekend, but it appears a Picross-themed version of the game may be coming in the near future.
Twitter user Cellenseners discovered the special version of Picross, called My Nintendo Picross - The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, on both the Nintendo US and UK servers. The leak includes images of the main menu screenshot and even its icon which shows further details of the game, including it being published by Nintendo.
The Legend of Zelda Picross game will reportedly be offered as a bonus for My Nintendo users, which is expected to launch later this month, with the game itself listed for a March 31 release. We have a feeling that March 31 date is a placeholder as the game should launch around the same time as My Nintendo’s launch.
Dive into the uncanny valley with Boston Dynamics’ newest bipedal robot
syndicatedragonThe video shows a bit more than the clip on Nova
Boston Dynamics—part of Google's robotics division—has shown off the newest version of its "Atlas" bipedal robot. In a video posted to the company's YouTube page, the next-generation Atlas takes a stroll through the snow, recovers from a few slips, and even squats down to pick up a 10-pound box.
This "next-generation" Atlas is a refinement of the old Atlas model, which was unveiled to the world in 2013. The old Atlas was a bit of a giant—it was 6 feet tall and weighed 330 pounds. The new Atlas is a lot closer to an average human, at just 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds. This is also the first Atlas model to be equipped with a LIDAR system—a spinning metal can embedded in the robot's head.
The new Atlas goes through quite a gauntlet of tests in the video. After taking a walk over some rough, snowy terrain, a Boston Dynamics employee pushes it backwards with a hockey stick and smacks its toy box out of its hands. After being pushed so hard and taking a header into the floor, the robot shows it is still capable of picking itself up and going back to work.

Poop And Profit: Slime Rancher’s Fantastic Farming
Slime Rancher [official site] is the cutest game about selling shit ever made. Admittedly it’s probably the only game about selling shit ever made, but I don’t know for certain and googling “Shitselling games” tends to bring up commercial flops like Bulletstorm rather than games that literally involve the flogging of faecal matter.
If you’ve seen anything of Monomi Park’s debut, which slithered onto Early Access a couple of weeks back leaving a silvery trail in its wake, then its love for excrement may come as a surprise. Aesthetically Slime Rancher is a thundering wave of colour, like a circus struck by a tsunami, and the eponymous slimes are so clearly designed to be childfriendly that it’s surprising to discover they have any orifices at all.

Nintendo outlines Miitomo launch and its new rewards program
Nintendo has announced that their first mobile app Miitomo will be available starting in March. The social communication app is based around Nintendo’s Mii characters, first popularized with the release of the Nintendo Wii.
Starting on February 17th, people in North America and Europe will be able to preregister for Miitomo by creating a new Nintendo Account using their current Nintendo Network ID, social network accounts, or even just an email address. Those who preregister for Miitomo will be the first to be notified about its availability in March.
According to the press release, Miitomo is a social app that asks users questions in order to interact with their friends and spark interesting conversations. Nintendo believes the app will create a way for friends to discover new information that they might not otherwise share in person, while also providing a way to share photos featuring the created Mii.
Launching alongside Miitomo will be Nintendo’s new rewards program, called My Nintendo. It will be available in March and will connect with Miitomo. Anyone who creates a Nintendo Account between February 17 and the launch of Miitomo in March will receive a special reward.
Aside from the launch plans for Miitomo, Nintendo did mention that an additional four more apps will be launched on mobile platforms before March 2017.
New Title from Ex-Criterion Devs is Dangerous Golf
syndicatedragonThis looks like PAIN but with less juvenile humor. Too bad it's not PS3 :(
After they departed from Criterion in 2014, founders Fiona Sperry and Alex Ward, along with another of their fellow, former Criterion co-workers, Paul Ross, formed Three Fields Entertainment. Their first title, Dangerous Golf, appears to be every bit as chaotic and fun as the Burnout games for which they are best known.
Unlike most golf games, the focus of Dangerous Golf isn't trying to get a hole-in-one or the best score under par; it's to smash up as much stuff as possible one your way to the hole. As the game's website puts it:
...players will not only be awarded points for trick shots and ricochet techniques, but they’ll also get rewarded for destroying stuff by turning their golf ball into a bomb and setting off their SmashBreaker. Destructive powers increase as the ball heats up, ensuring that the most elaborate shots are not only the most rewarded, but the most impressive to watch.
Aside from the single player mode, the title will also support a turn-based party mode for up to eight players locally. The focus there is similar as players work together to "smash the place up and bang the ball into the hole."
Dangerous Golf is due for a May 2016 release on PC, PlayStation 4, and XBox One.

Dragon Quest VII headed to 3DS this summer
It’s been a few years since we heard a Dragon Quest VII remake would be making its way to the 3DS, and overnight, Nintendo confirmed the title will be released in the US this summer.
Nintendo didn’t provide any additional details for the release date window for Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past. The only information we received was that the game would be available this summer. Meanwhile, no word as to when the west will get to play Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King.
While we’ll happily replay both Dragon Quest VII and VIII, we’re definitely looking forward to the upcoming release of Dragon Quest XI. Actually, we’re just happy Square Enix is finally showing the Dragon Quest series the love it deserves.
Google Drops The Nexus 5X Price To $349 For 16GB, $399 For 32GB In The US Google Store
syndicatedragonI think it's still overpriced, considering what the X Pure gives you
Google's cheaper option for this year's Nexus phone is now a little cheaper. Without any special fanfare, the LG Nexus 5X has dropped its price in the Google Store. The 16GB model is now $349 (down from $379) and the 32GB model is now $399 (down from $429). That places both of them more firmly in the mid-range price bracket, which is pretty nice considering the high-end processor and screen, not to mention quick Android updates from Google.
