For the past few years, we’ve seen Google place significant emphasis on price as a way of competing with other tablets on the market. The original Nexus 7 managed to deliver a good tablet experience without the conventional 500 USD price for a tablet. The successor to the Nexus 7 was even more incredible, as it pushed hardware that was equal to or better than most tablets on the market at a lower price. However, as with most of these low cost Nexus devices not everything was perfect as corners still had to be cut in order to hit these low price points.

The Nexus 9 is supposed to be the polar opposite. Instead of driving price as the primary differentiator, Google has refocused on the high end tablet market for the Nexus 9. With a new focus on industrial and material design, along with some of the latest and greatest hardware in every dimension. HTC has been brought on as a partner for the first time since the Nexus One to enable this vision. In addition, NVIDIA’s Tegra K1 with Denver CPUs can be found inside as the launch platform for Android Lollipop on 64-bit ARM v8. The Nexus 9 also has a 4:3 aspect ratio on its display, a notable departure from the 16:10 ratio that was shared with phones. There’s also the addition of BoomSound speakers on the front and a metal frame running around the edge of the device for improved in-hand feel. Total worldwide shipments of tablets as well as 2-in-1 devices stood at 76.1 million in Q4, 2014, down 3.2% compared to the 78.6 million figure registered in the year ago quarter, according to a latest report from market research firm IDC. This is significant given the fact that this is the first time that tablet shipments have declined since the market's inception in 2010. As for tablet manufacturers, all major vendors saw their shipments decline - at 21.4 million units, Apple iPad's shipments were down 17.8% year-on-year, while Samsung saw its tablet shipments decline by 18.4% to 11 million units. While Asus also saw its shipments decline 25%, worst hit was Amazon, whose shipments tumbled a whopping 70% to 1.7 million units. Among the top five vendors, Lenovo was the only company which wasn't in red - its tablet shipments increased 9.1% year-over-year to 3.7 million units. IDC says part of the problem is that the tablet market relies mostly on Apple and Samsung. "Although Apple expanded its iPad lineup by keeping around older models and offering a lower entry price point of $249, it still wasn't enough to spur iPad sales given the excitement around the launch of the new iPhones," said Jitesh Ubrani, Senior Research Analyst, Worldwide Quarterly Tablet Tracker. "Meanwhile, Samsung's struggles continued as low-cost vendors are quickly proving that mid- to high-priced Android tablets simply aren't cut out for today's tablet market." At CES, MSI (TPE: 2377) announced that it had sold 100 million Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) video cards. To commemorate the milestone, the vendor is launching limited edition GTX 970 and GTX 960 with a bright green color scheme that matches Nvidia’s logo.

Both cards feature MSI’s Twin Frozr V design, and come with technologies such as Zero Frozr – which aims to eliminate noise by disabling the fans when not under load. There’s also dual 100mm Torx fans, as well as a custom backplate that is designed to improve structural rigidity. Along with the green color scheme, MSi has stated that it will include a “gift for dedicated MSI fans” with each video card that is included in the box.

The GTX 970 is based on the GM204 GPU and has a core clock of 1,140 MHz with a boost clock of 1,279 MHz. There’s 4GB GDDR5 video memory clocked at 7.0 GHz, and connectivity includes DL-DVI-D, DL-DVI-I, HDMI and DisplayPort 1.2.

MSI’s limited edition GTX 960 has the GM206 GPU, which features a much smaller die size aimed at maximizing energy efficiency. The card’s core clock is 1,216 MHz, with boost clock at 1,279 MHz. Video memory is at 2GB, and connectivity is in the form of DL-DVI-I, HDMI and 3x DisplayPort 1.2.

These aren’t the first limited edition GTX 900 series cards MSI has launched, as the vendor introduced the golden GTX 970 in November 2014. As is often the case with such editions, the 100 million commemorative editions of the GTX 970 and GTX 960 will likely command a premium over the standard cards.
