Badlands

by Esther Jablotschkin

‘Badlands’ was born out of an innate fascination with the surreal desert landscapes outside of the metropolis of Phoenix, Arizona. A netherworld of eroded rocks and rusted soil that seems extraterrestrial. Jagged mountainous zigzags criss-cross Pre-cambrian mounds, marked stratum of eons of evolution, degradation, and rebirth, intertwined with the endlessly blue Arizona sky. The sweeping colors, immense spread of land, mountains eroding into flowing waves of sand and pebble seems to offer a glimpse into another world.

Within this context, a collaboration was born – between the glass of a photographic lens, and the simulation of a digital model. Exploring the landscapes, Ben Sandler’s camera becomes the recorder of the original source, while Zeitguised’s digital modeling tool interprets the geologic phenomenology of the land. Within this process, an aesthetic language is developed. It interpolates between the inorganic substrates of the prehistoric landscape, with the organic and tectonic structures embedded within. Based on image analysis and observation, the project circumvents the dichotomy of the real and the fake, as it combines the two in imagery that is taking cues from itself. The resulting world becomes a striking and uncanny walk-in bastardization between the rich reality of the landscape and the reduced analytic model thereof.

Artistic Mom Turns Nap Time into an Adventure

by twistedsifter

Like all newborns, baby Wengenn likes to nap—a lot. His mom, Queenie Liao, an artist and photographer decided to turn this quiet time into an art project entitled, Wengenn in Wonderland.

Similar to Anna Eftimie’s Blackboard Adventures, the Chinese artist creates amazing scenes around her sleeping boy, putting him into all kinds of fantastical adventures. Wengenn must be a deep sleeper as some of the sets are quite elaborate. His various sleeping positions are also entertaining; back, front side, you name it, he’s slept it. A perfect muse and a smile-inducing photo series, who knows where Wengenn will go next!

First spotted on Bored Panda, the images have gone viral and led to a published book entitled Sleep Baby. You can see the entire 32-picture series on Facebook.

Portraits of Dogs, Mid-Shake

by twistedsifter

In 2011, animal photographer Carli Davidson took a series of dogs portraits, mid-shake. Every dog owner (or unsuspecting passersby) know the shake well. What better way to rid oneself of excess water than a violent contortion of the body?

The photos were a worldwide hit garnering millions of views and putting the Portland-based photographer on the map. Earlier this week, Davidson released Shake, a 144-page hardcover book featuring sixty-one different dogs in 130 full-page portraits.

You can buy the book through your preferred online retailer by visiting shakethebook.com. To keep up with the latest from Carli, be sure to check her out at the online links below.

Grandmothers Posing with their Signature Dish

by twistedsifter

Italian artist Gabriele Galimberti is a commercial photographer (featured previously here and here) whose human-interest photo series’ have garnered critical acclaim.

During a recent 18-month ‘couch surfing’ trip around the world, Galimberti pursued a number of personal photo projects including Delicatessen with love, where he asked grandmothers to prepare their signature dishes. In a side by side series, Galimberti took portraits of the women with the ingredients used to cook the meal on one side and the finished dish on the other.

Galimberti took the project a step further, collecting the recipes for each meal, which you can find on his official site. Below is a small selection from this heartwarming series. To see all 44 grandmothers, dishes and recipes click here.

18 Striking Images from Space Show Earth’s Rich Tapestry

by twistedsifter

The European Space Agency (ESA) is Europe’s gateway to space. An international organisation with 20 Member States, the ESA in its current form was created in 1975. Since then they have shared amazing research and images for the world to learn from. With almost 12,000 high-resolution images available through their website, their extensive archive is a great online resource for research and inspiration.

One particularly striking archive available is Observing the Earth, a collection of satellite images of Earth. As the ESA explains:

“Earth Observation images show the world through a wide-enough frame so that complete large-scale phenomena can be observed to an accuracy and entirety it would take an army of ground-level observers to match. A single satellite image has the potential to show the spread of air pollution across a continent, the precise damage done in a region struck by an earthquake or forest fires, or the entire span of a 500-km hurricane from the calmness of its eye to its outermost storm fronts. Earth Observation provides objective coverage across both space and time. The same space-based sensor gathers data from sites across the world, including places too remote or otherwise inaccessible for ground-based data acquisition.

While satellite acquisitions are most often presented in the form of pictures, they are actually digital data. So the same raw data can be processed with computer software in many different ways to extract whatever information the particular end-user requires.”

Below you will find a selection of the Sifter’s personal favourites. You can see the entire archive on the ESA’s official site.

1. Namib Desert

Namib_Desert

Photograph by KARI/ESA

Korea’s Kompsat-2 satellite captured this image over the sand seas of the Namib Desert on 7 January 2012. The blue and white area is the dry river bed of the Tsauchab. Black dots of vegetation are concentrated close to the river’s main route, while salt deposits appear bright white. Running through the river valley, a road connects Sossusvlei to the Sesriem settlement. At the road’s 45th kilometre, seen at the lower-central part of the image, a white path shoots off and ends at a circular parking area at the base of a dune. This is Dune 45, a popular tourist stop on the way to and from Sossusvlei. In this image, there appears to be some shadow on the western side. From this we can deduce that the image was acquired during the late morning.

2. Venice, Italy

Floating_city

The islands that make up the Italian city of Venice and the surrounding Venetian Lagoon are pictured in this image. Snaking through the central districts is the Grand Canal, with the Santa Lucia train station at its northern end and the Saint Mark Basin at its southern end. Zooming in, we can see water buses and taxis navigating the canal and gondolas docked along the edge. The square island to the north is San Michele. Once a prison island, it became a cemetery when Napoleon’s occupying forces declared burial on the main islands unsanitary. This image was acquired on 22 June 2008 by Ikonos-2, a commercial satellite that provides panchromatic and multispectral high-resolution imagery.

3. Algerian Sahara

Algerian_Sahara

Photograph by JAXA, ESA

The image shows the extraordinary landscape of the Tanezrouft Basin, one of the most desolate parts of the Sahara desert, in south-central Algeria. The region is known as ‘land of terror’ because of its lack of water and vegetation. As visible, this region is characterised by dark sandstone hills, steep canyon walls, salt flats (white), stone plateaus, sandstone outcrop patterns of concentric loops and sprawling seas of multi-storey sand dunes known as ‘ergs’. Erg Mehedjibat, which appears as a yellow bouquet of flowers (upper right), is made up of a cluster of small star dunes that grow upward rather than laterally. Japan’s ALOS (Advanced Land Observing Satellite) captured this image on 24 June 2009 with its Advanced Visible and Near Infrared Radiometer type-2 (AVNIR-2) instrument.

4. The Imperial Valley in Southern California

The_Imperial_Valley_in_Southern_California

Photograph by JAXA, ESA

The rich agricultural soils of the Imperial Valley in the desert region of Southern California, US, are featured in this image acquired on 4 July 2010 by Japan’s four-tonne ALOS Earth observation satellite. The valley begins from the southern end of the Salton Sea (top left) and extends southward for some 80 km into Mexico. The cities of Brawley (bottom right), Westmorland (bottom left) and Calipatria (top) are visible, along with Ramer (top) and Finney Lakes (centre right).

5. Plentiful plankton

Plentiful_plankton

This Envisat image captures a plankton bloom larger than the country of Greece stretching across the Barents Sea off the tip of northern Europe. Envisat acquired this image on 19 August 2009 with its Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) instrument.

6. Rainforest river, Brazil

Rainforest_river_Brazil

Photograph by ESA

This image from the Envisat satellite shows the Juruá River snaking through the Amazon rainforest in western Brazil. Along the river’s main course are free-standing ‘oxbow lakes’, formed when a river changes course. This image is a compilation of three images from Envisat’s radar, acquired on 2 January, 1 February and 3 March 2012. The individual images are each assigned a colour – red, green and blue – and when combined, reveal changes in the surface between Envisat’s passes.

7. Scandinavian snows

Scandinavian_snows

Photograph by ESA

In this image from the Envisat satellite, clouds cover the North Sea and sweep down to the strait between Denmark (lower-right corner) and Norway (upper-centre). In the upper-right corner, a thicker blanket of clouds covers south eastern Norway and spreads into Sweden. Located on the Scandinavian Peninsula, Norway is Europe’s northernmost country and is famed for its fjords. Some of these are visible in the image as dark lines between the white and snow-covered land. Near the top of the image, we can see part of Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, the Sognefjord. In the lower-right corner, we can see part of Denmark’s Jutland peninsula, with small and large bodies of water speckling the flat terrain.

8. The ‘treasure peninsula’ of Kazakhstan

The_treasure_peninsula_of_Kazakhstan

Photograph by KARI/ESA

This Kompsat-2 image was acquired on 24 November 2012 over southwestern Kazakhstan’s Mangistau region east of the Caspian Sea. Along the top of the image we can see water and wetlands, with eroded areas at the top and on the right. The majority of the image is dominated by flatland covered with low-lying vegetation. The bright web of roads in the lower left section of the image is the Karakuduk oil field. The white squares in this ‘web’ indicate where wells are located. We can also see buildings and other structures related to oil production. Kazakhstan – and in particular, the Mangistau oblast – has large fossil fuel reserves and an abundant supply of other minerals and metals. Because of this, Mangistau is sometimes called the ‘treasure peninsula’ of Kazakhstan.

9. The Palouse region

The_Palouse_region

Photograph by KARI/ESA

Rolling hills of farmland in the northwest United States are pictured in this image from the Kompsat-2 satellite. Acquired over Washington state, the south and west areas of the image are in Walla Walla county, while the central-eastern-upper area is Columbia County. The area pictured is part of the Palouse region – an agricultural zone that mainly produces wheat and legumes. The rolling, picturesque landscape has sometimes been compared to Italy’s Tuscany. Zooming in, we can see swirling patterns in the vegetation created by ploughs. Roads cut through the shallow valleys and buildings can also be seen. Touchet River, known for its trout fishing, can been seen in the lower left. The diagonal line running next to the river is a road that connects the town of Prescott to the west to Waitsburg to the east.

10. Ganges’ dazzling delta

Ganges_dazzling_delta

Photograph by European Space Agency

This Envisat image highlights the Ganges Delta, the world’s largest delta, in the south Asia area of Bangladesh (visible) and India. The delta plain, about 350-km wide along the Bay of Bengal, is formed by the confluence of the rivers Ganges, the Brahmaputra and Meghna. As radar images represent surface backscatter rather than reflected light, there is no colour in a standard radar image. This image was created by combining three Envisat Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar acquisitions (20 January 2009, 24 February 2009 and 31 March 2009) taken over the same area. The colours in the image result from variations in the surface that occurred between acquisitions.

11. Agricultural structure in Kansas

Agricultural_structure_in_Kansas

Photograph by USGS/ESA

This false-colour Landsat-5 image from 4 May 2012 shows agricultural structures in the US state of Kansas. The cropland is divided into circles and rectangles due to the different types of irrigation systems. The false colour makes vegetation look mostly red and brown in this image, allowing for better discrimination between different vegetation types. In the bottom right corner, the agricultural patchwork breaks for the Cimarron River. Sometimes, the water in this river disappears entirely under the sand in the river bed. In the central right portion of the image is the city of Ulysses.

12. Iceberg Alley, Labrador

Iceberg_Alley_Labrador

Photograph by ESA

A large chunk of the massive iceberg (centre) that broke off Greenland’s Petermann Glacier in August 2010 is featured floating in the Labrador Sea off the eastern coast of Labrador in this Envisat image, acquired on 4 May 2011 by the Medium Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MERIS) instrument. More than 1000 icebergs flow off southern Labrador and northern Newfoundland from late May to late June, earning the area the nickname ‘Iceberg Alley’. Ice floes (top) are visible drifting southwards in the sea. White swirls indicate drift of the small pieces of ice in response to ocean vortexes, or ‘eddies’, and are an expression of the ocean surface currents.

13. Libya’s Al Jawf oasis

Libya_s_Al_Jawf_oasis

Photograph by JAXA, ESA

Deep in the Sahara Desert, the Al Jawf oasis in southeastern Libya is pictured in this image from Japan’s ALOS satellite. The city can be seen in the upper left corner, while large, irrigated agricultural plots appear like Braille across the image. Between the city and the plots we can see the two parallel runways of the Kufra Airport. The agricultural plots reach up to a kilometre in diameter. Their circular shapes were created by a central-pivot irrigation system, where a long water pipe rotates around a well at the centre of each plot. Since the area receives virtually no rainfall, fossil water is pumped from deep underground for irrigation.

14. Southern central Romania

Southern_central_Romania

Photograph by KARI/ESA

Korea’s Kompsat-2 satellite captured this image of southern central Romania on 2 January 2013. The area pictured is part of a geographic transitional region between the Southern Carpathians to the north and the lowland plains to the south. The tree branch-like pattern is the result of erosion along rivers and streams. Running down the centre of the image is the Cotmeana river. Zooming in, we can see that large areas have been divided into hundreds of small agricultural plots.

15. Snowy Siberia

Snowy_Siberia

Photograph by ESA

North central Siberia is pictured in this Envisat image from 5 March 2012. In the lower-left corner we can see the Yenisei river, which flows north into the Kara Sea (not pictured). The Yenisei is considered to be the boundary between eastern and western Siberia. The majority of the area pictured lies above the Arctic Circle. This is also an area of continuous permafrost, where the soil is at or below freezing throughout the year. Although permafrost cannot be directly measured from space, factors such as surface temperature, land cover and snow parameters, soil moisture and terrain changes can be captured by satellites.

16. Golden curves

Golden_curves

Korea’s Kompsat-2 satellite captured this image over the sand seas of the Namib Desert on 7 January 2012. The blue and white area is the dry river bed of the Tsauchab. Black dots of vegetation are concentrated close to the river’s main route, while salt deposits appear bright white. From this we can deduce that the image was acquired during the late morning.

17. Mississippi River Delta

Mississippi_River_Delta

Photograph by USGS/ESA

This Landsat image of 3 October 2011 shows the Mississippi River Delta, where the largest river in the United States empties into the Gulf of Mexico. In this false-colour image, land vegetation appears pink, while the sediment in the surrounding waters are bright blue and green.

18.

Agricultural_crops_in_Aragon_and_Catalonia

Photograph by KARI

This image captures the meticulously planned cultivated landscape of the autonomous communities of Aragon (west) and Catalonia in north-eastern Spain. Many agricultural crops can be seen growing including wheat, barley, fruits and vegetables. The circular shape of many of the fields indicates central-pivot irrigation is being employed; a well drilled in the centre of each circle supplies water to a rotating series of sprinklers.

Marzena Skubatz

by Caroline Kurze

Marzena Skubatz is a photographer working between Germany and Iceland. Her pictures are wonderfully natural and we can’t get enough of her atmospheric photography. We especially enjoy her striking landscape motifs and sensitive portraits. Right after she finished her studies in photography, Marzena started to hike the mountains of Iceland and fell in love with the country and its inhabitants. She is currently working on different projects such as ‘the sea in me’ where it gets very clear that one of her main inspirations is water and its movement. For iGNANT, Marzena documented one day in her life with her camera. Follow her through the fascinating Icelandic landscape and meet the talented photographer Marzena Skubatz in a very intimate portrait. Enjoy.

[8: 00 am] Good morning. When I am working in Iceland I usually spend some time on a farm in the eastfjords. I call this place home and try to be there as often as I can. I usually wake up around 8 o’clock. This morning we have a wonderful sunrise, so I decide to go out and take some pictures.

[8:15 am] Laura is already there.

[9:05 am] We go to the barn to take care of the animals.

[10:30 am] The weather is good so we decide to go on boat…

[10:35 am] …with one of my favorite persons in the world, Billa.

[11:00 am] We feed the fish.

[11:20 am] …and say hello to the new visitor in our fjord.

[12:00 am] I still have to do an interview for my current project ‘Zweite Heimat’, so I decide to switch boats and visit the next fjord.

[01: 00 pm] Johann and the others get the mail and buy some food and supplies for the village, while I am working through my interview.

[01:45 pm] On our way back I take some pictures for my ongoing project ‘the sea in me’

[01:50 pm] Although I am a little bit seasick I love to go on boat and watch the sea…

[01:50 pm] and the sky…

[01:55 pm] …water is an important element in my photographic work…

[02:00 pm] It’s not possible to go to the village by car in the wintertime, so all mail and shopping has to be done by boat.

[02:15 pm] I decide to skip the lunch and knock on some doors to take portraits for my next project „the weather report“ which is about the village and it’s inhibitants. Johanna shows me her artisic talents and I call her ‘little monkey’.

[05:30 pm] In the late afternoon Billa and me leave the village to go back to her farm which is about 20 km away.

[06:15 pm] On our way back we see an arctic fox. He’s very small and shy.

[06:30 pm] The sunset is even better than the sunrise.

[07:05 pm] The sky is burning so I take some pictures for you guys

[07:30 pm] before we bring the sheep back to the barn

[07:45 pm] and take care of the other animals.

[08:55 pm] The work is done and we go back to the house

[09:00 pm] I use my spare time to do some editing, answer some mails and talk to Billa, while she is baking the most delicious cake in the world. We love to joke around and laugh a lot here.

[11:45 pm] I usually go to sleep around midnight. It is also a good time to look out for some northern lights, which appear quite often in the wintertime. I hope you liked my 24hours as much as I did. Góða nótt!

memorie scrapbook by Abbie Calvert

by Esther Jablotschkin

Abbie Calvert is a young australian photographer based in Tasmania. Her latest work is a series taken on bushwalks in her homeland and the South Island of New Zealand. ‘Each walk is a little journey, a part of a larger journey in search of something, although I’ve never found what I was looking for and have not really decided what it is that I am pursuing. I am aimless, but I am moved by my desires and emotions.’

Her series has become about the process of collecting images – the time spent exploring, watching, capturing small moments, developing sensory drives and cognitive interpretations. For her it is very human to collect little tokens – like images, souvenirs, words, that remind us of small, memorable moments on our journey. For this reason she loves to look at old family photo albums and holiday slides. ‘Which images do we keep? How do we arrange them? Which images do we treasure enough to frame? Each person is moved by their individual emotions, little moments are more significant to some than to others and therefore each person’s scrapbook is one-of-a-kind, distinctive, beautiful.’ We think hers is especially appealing.

The Most Amazing Driftwood Sculptures You Will See Today

by twistedsifter

driftwood sculptures by jeffro uitto knock on wood (8)

Artist Jeffro Uitto – Self portrait

Using only salvaged materials like driftwood, roots, burls and natural found wood; Jeffro Uitto creates astonishing works of art and furniture. Since high school Jeffro has used wood as his creative outlet. He has since opened his own shop, Knock on Wood, in Tokeland, Washington, where he works on custom orders, commissions, and personal projects.

Every sculpture and furniture item seen below is made from salvaged materials Uitto has personally collected. He tells the Daily Mail that he finds most of his pieces in the winter when storms move the wood around. In fact, finding the right material is tantamount to the finished piece and akin to a big treasure hunt for the artist.

Below you will find a small selection of Uitto’s amazing work. Be sure to check him out on his website and Facebook page for the latest.

Storm chaser and NASA Fellow Robert Edmonds captured this jaw-dropping photo of a tornado in Loreburn, Saskatchewan, Canada. Edmonds says the storm produced multiple funnels, including the unique horizontal roll vortex at the top right, before finally producing a tornado.

If you’re interested in a storm chasing tour, Edmonds is available as a private guide through his website Storm Chase Guide.

Seen here is a beautiful outlook point at Sai-Thong National Park in Chaiyaphum province, Thailand. For those not too afraid of heights, this would be an amazing place to reflect and ponder or to just soak in the beauty of our planet.

According to Thailand’s Department of National Parks website, this outlook is known as Pha Hum Huet and is a popular destination for hikers. Sai Thong National Park is located in the Pung Huei Mountain range and includes the Na Yang Gluk Conservation Forest. The national park was designated on the 30th December 1992, with total area of 319 km2.

Recreating the Past with Model Cars and Forced Perspective

by twistedsifter

michael paul smith miniature car model maker Recreating the Past with Model Cars and Forced Perspective

Artist Michael Paul Smith – Self Portrait

For the last 25 years, Michael Paul Smith has used model cars, forced perspective and custom-built miniature displays in real-world settings to create Elgin Park, Smith’s version of a mid 20th century American town

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and currently living in New England, Smith’s model-making skills are the accumulation of numerous jobs he has had including: textbook illustrator, wallpaper hanger, house painter, and architectural model maker.

Shot at the right distance and perspective (forced perspective), Smith brings his 300+ collection of vintage die-cast model cars (1/24th the size) to life, blending them seamlessly into both the miniature sets he has built and the surrounding outdoor landscape.

Smith then adds filters in post production to give the images that nostalgic look and feel. The project has led to a 144-page hardcover book entitled, Elgin Park: An Ideal American Town and is available through Prestel Publishing.

If you’re interested in learning more about the behind-the-scenes process, be sure to check out this great interview on Fstoppers. To see more of Elgin Park, check out Michael Paul Smith on Flickr.

Johnson Tsang Sculpts a Dragon Strangling a Porcelain Vase

by twistedsifter

Johnson Cheung-shing Tsang is a Hong Kong sculptor specializing in ceramics, stainless steel sculpture and public artworks. Tsang’s works mostly employ realist sculptural techniques with a surrealist imagination, integrating the two elements, human beings and objects, into creative themes.

In a recent sculpture entitled A Painful Pot, Tsang wanted to create a porcelain sculpture that expressed how he felt about his country. The detail is astonishing and you can get a great sense of the intricate craftsmanship involved in the process photos below. In the comments on his blog, Tsang says the scariest and most exciting part is opening the kiln.

Tsang will be having his first solo exhibition at the Taiwan Yingge Ceramics Museum from 7 Dec 2013 to 19 Jan 2014. ‘A Painful Pot’ will be one of the sculptures featured at the exhibit.

Animated gifs by Zack Dougherty

by Esther Jablotschkin

Sometimes after a long staring contest with a great piece of art, you might feel a little exhausted, maybe even start seeing things. Zack Dougherty‘s latest project doubles down on this idea by featuring a clever collection of manipulated, hypnotizing GIFs. The Portland-based digital artist takes a simple sculpture and turns it into eternally repeating images, transforming pristine busts into psychedelic moving pictures. These switch so rapidly that eye and brain need some time to grasp the lightning evolution of the picture. But when one fathoms this sequences the deed is done: he is witness of a captivating ode to art history.

Illusion by Barbara Scerbo

by Esther Jablotschkin

Barbara Scerbo is a young Italian photographer who recently moved to Rome to transform a simple passion into a real job by studying photography. Before leaving for Rome and with the help of Giuliana Vaccaro she did her latest project ‘Illusion’. The project animates the imagination of the viewer, who is disturbed and intrigued by mirrors that interrupt the image. While the shots seem in general natural, calm and scenic due to the landscape behind, the effect of the mirrored picture in the picture is irritating yet fascinating. With ‘Illusion’ Barbara Scerbo created a beautiful and promising work – we are curious about her future projects.

Paperart by Myriam Dion

by Esther Jablotschkin

Armed with a very sharp x-acto scalpel and the latest edition of newspapers Myriam Dion transforms them in hours-long accurate work into stunning detailed paper masterpieces with lace-like transcendency. By doing thousands of perfect cuts she creates a fascinating harmony, which reminds rather of pages of a storybook from another time than of a newspaper. Myriam is a canadian artist, currently working on a masters degree in visual and media arts at the University of Quebec.

10 Animations that Show How Faces Age Over Time

by twistedsifter

then and now aging gif 3 10 Animations that Show How Faces Age Over Time

The aging process is ongoing and one we don’t typically notice on a daily basis (see the captivating video at the bottom of the post, it perfectly demonstrates the subtlety of aging). However, when you see childhood photos of your grandparents or parents (or even yourself!), the difference can be startling.

In a recent video posted to dovga, we see portraits of elderly people transitioned into photos of their younger self. While many facial characteristics remain recognizable, the aging process is clear. The video featured 10 portraits which were then turned into Internet-friendly animated gifs by gifcraft.

While the animated gifs are dramatic, be sure to watch the video at the end to see how subtle the process really is. Everyone gets old; it’s how we live between the ‘then’ and ‘now’ that really matters.

Preview: Julian Callos’s “Cosmos” at WWA Gallery

by Nastia Voynovskaya
For his new body of work for his solo show, "Cosmos," coming up at WWA Gallery in Culver City, Julian Callos delved into primordial themes. Set at the dawn of creation, the paintings recall the tumultuous myths of Ancient Greek gods that preceded the Olympians, the Titans, with their personification of the forces of the universe. Callos says he explores the origin of the universe in his work as a metaphor for the formation of one's personal identity. "Cosmos" opens October 12 and in the project room of WWA, there will be a group show, "Time Will Tell," curated by Callos with work from the likes of Michael Ramstead, Jon MacNair, Ken Garduno (featured in our current issue), Casey Weldon and others. Take a look at our preview of the show after the jump.

Samuel Gomez Draws a 90-Square-Foot Masterpiece

by twistedsifter

triptych drawing graphite and ink by samuel gomez deadpan comedy art prize 2013 (1)

Born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Samuel Gomez is an artist and designer living and working in New York City. Gomez’s style embodies a ‘hybrid surreal-steampunk’ aesthetic and his preferred tools include: graphite, pens, acrylics and inks.

Gomez has also worked over a decade as a Creative Designer and Illustrator for some of the top design agencies in New York and Chicago. He graduated from Altos de Chavon in 1999 and received his BFA in Communication Design from Parsons in New York.

In an ambitious artwork entitled Deadpan Comedy, Gomez drew a colossal triptych for the 2013 ArtPrize competition. The graphite and ink on paper drawing measured 18 ft (5.48 m) long and 5 ft (1.5 m) tall. As per the entry page:

This triptych drawing is a surreal graphic satire in which, instead of depicting the ‘ideally wished’ landscape of the future of nature, Samuel Gomez showcases the very things that are preventing us from moving forward and coexisting with nature in a responsible manner. The first and third panels depict corporations and a capitalist system, the interests that he believes are stopping us from a sustainable future. The center panel is the harvest, an allegorical place where we all come to harvest our dreams, wishes, desires, and goals. It features a clockwork casino with a dandelion flower made of bubbles as the source. People gather here to work, whistling away their dreams. Some dreams grow and some dreams burst, but all of the dreams together make up the intricate landscape of human emotions.

To see more incredible artwork from Gomez be sure to check him out on Behance and Facebook.

Vibrant paintings of Harding Meyer

by Caroline Kurze

Harding Meyer is an brazilian artist who studied fine arts at Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe, Germany. Currently he works and lives in Berlin and Karlsruhe, but many of his paintings are known all over the world. His exhibited portraits are mainly large-scaled works which seem realistic and alienated at the same time. Often a second face appears in a portrait so that the eye feels visually tricked. Or it seems as if the painting lies in water. Although shapes and contours are blurring – the realistic impression still remains and is intensified by the vibrant range of colors.
