Gender adds hurdles to treating tropical diseases

by Jelena Damjanovic-Toronto

U. TORONTO (CAN) — Men and women in Uganda both face challenges accessing treatment for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), but for different reasons, a new study shows.

NTDs are a group of parasitic, viral, and bacterial diseases that affect at least a billion people worldwide. Predominantly seen in rural and underserved communities in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, they can pose significant health risks for both male and female populations.

Robot frog woos ladies despite bad whine

by Daniel Oppenheimer-U. Texas

U. TEXAS-AUSTIN — Two wrong mating calls can make a right for female túngara frogs, according to a new study using robotic males.

The “rather bizarre” result may be evidence not of a defect in the frog brain, but of how well frogs have evolved to extract meaning from noise, much the way humans have. The research may also provide insight into how complex traits evolve by hooking together much simpler traits.

Do you sense a Batman theme? Of course! Could there be anything more incredible than Bat-tastic Bebeh Bat Yawns and Multiple Tongue Fleecking?

Yes, there could. How about a little Caped Crusader hanging upside down at the Oakland Zoo WITH ITS OWN TEDDY BEAR.

That's not how your last name is spelled

by areshoekiddingme

mansplained:

My last name is Thomas.  Not a wildly common name, but not exactly unheard-of, either.  I was on the phone once with a man (first time talking with him, he was a new landlord of a space my company was renting) and he asked me my name and how to spell it.  I said that my name was (my first name) Thomas, and it was spelled (first name) T-h-o-m-a - at which point he interrupted me to correct me.  He said “that’s not how your last name is spelled".  I said, yes, it is, and he said “no, no, sweetie, that’s not how ‘Thompson’ is spelled."  I replied “true, that isn’t how ‘Thompson’ is spelled.  My name, however, is ‘Thomas’, not ‘Thompson’."  His comeback?  “No, dear, you’re confused.  Your last name is Thompson and it’s spelled …" (and proceeded to spell Thompson.

He was our landlord for a while.  I never did convince him that I might have a better idea than a complete stranger as to what my last name was.

by areshoekiddingme
“I remember working with a law school in which white men heavily dominated the faculty. They used lots of sports metaphors (doing an end run, Monday morning quarterbacking, and so on), with legal jargon thrown in for good measure. I suggested that this was not a particularly welcoming trait in their school, that in fact it was sexist, but they paid little attention. I made my point by speaking for about five minutes in dressmaking terms: putting a dart in here, a gusset there, cutting the budget on the bias so it would be more flexible, using a peplum to hide a course that might be controversial. The women in the room laughed; the men did not find it humorous….Language is power, make no mistake about it. It is used to include and exclude and to keep people and systems in their places.”

IT’S A HUMMINGBEE

These are BEE FLIES!

Harmless to everything else, these precious little cutie pies sneak their eggs into beehives, where their larvae can parasitize bee larvae and eat their food reserves!

Simultaneously adorable and insidious!

i really hate seeing children at gay rallies. in most cases, they don’t understand what they’re doing and what they’re promoting. i think most children are pressured into going to gay rallies by their parents and, therefore, pressured into believing in gay marriage.

Excuse you, I knew about homosexuality since I was four. With five years I could already argue about it and with six I had a formed opinion. All my motherS did was explain to me what it was, without ever telling me if it was good of bad.

The truth is that is actually easier for kids to understand homosexuality, and maybe even accept it, if they are told about it at a young age.

Yes, maybe the two-years-old kids there are not sure of whats going on, but their parents are raising them to open their minds and accept differences without it being a huge deal.

It’s funny how people don’t mind dragging kids at sundays to the church, to make them sit and listen to things they can’t understand nor question, but it’s so wrong to take them to a walk were they can see pretty rainbows , and later understand what they mean.

This is bullshit.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

And then to continue to drag those children once able to form an opinion to that church without them wanting to go.

^^THIS LAST COMMENT THOUGH!!!!

Also… you think a kid is really going to grow up and be like I’M SO MAD I WAS DUPED INTO WALKING WITH THE REST OF MY FAMILY IN SUPPORT OF MY PARENTS’ RIGHT TO LOVE EACH OTHER.

In which Nigel Bear eats a cronut

ionlyweardresses:

{4th of July, The Long Weekend}

We had the best four day week-end ever.

We ran in the woods twice - as a surprise date on July 4th and then again for our long runs!

The weather was perfectly hot and muggy so you could smell the trails of bbq smoke and fireworks throughout the neighborhood.

As I get older, I appreciate the stretches of weekend where you can vacation at home almost as much as I do the long trips away.

My only goal was to smile and grill out everyday and since we could work from home, we were all smiles.

We hosted friends for the fourth and fifth of July and I just realized these cookouts were our first hosted dinners as a couple.  Granted, we always have friends over for drinks and dessert, but this was different.  And even though I wanted to finish just one more project, I was happier about the memories created.

These veggie skewers with a balsamic-coriander glaze were devoured at a work event of John’s so they are my go-to bbq party food along with the ‘dogs and the sweet summer corn.  I am GRILLS GONE WILD!

I also bought a grown-up margarita set and think there will be some cocktail experimentation in the future.

Dessert was s’mores and we heated the marshmallows on the ‘Q - I’ve lived all these years and never made them without a fire or a microwave - the coals worked!  And they were gooey and melty and sweet.

But the surprise of the night was my friend Kara bringing us a Cronut for dessert.  Not Dominique Ansel’s but Chicago’s own Alliance Bakery - it had a raspberry-rose glaze and it was heavenly.  I am shocked by how flaky the layers were and how it lived up to all the chatter!

And check out our sweet back deck.  We host on a picnic table because it’s nicer to eat off a long table but we sure do love these little escape spaces at the end of the day.  Nigel Bear wasted no time making himself comfortable. :)

And yes, this has been one of my best gardening years - those hydrangeas were puny when I got them and look how glorious and lush!

Oh, and meet Spider Pig.

He isn’t out company grill (we need way more room to cook for four to six people at a time) but John and I use him as a daily pig-bachi!

He cooks food perfectly and I love being able to light a smaller grill for just the two of us every night - on the summer bucket list - grilled pizza and grilled fruit!  Oh, how I want his elephant brother too.

We also finally got Nigel Bear a new squishy bed.  He loves snuggling in it and John was the one who spotted it - I love how it works with our newly-decorated den!

And John laughs, but these pictures of Nigel Bear and me surprised me so much - I see him like when we first got him.  He was ten pounds, his belly dragged on the floor, and he never left my side.  Who is this big snuggle-dog??!!

Summer Magic, lovely people. :D

When bulldogs find good people it’s just the best thing
