Freyja was named after the Norse goddess of love, magic, and fertility. She loves to snuggle and play, play, play! She is very smart and all love. Swedish Vallhunds were the dogs of ancient Vikings, and they are commonly referred to as "wolf corgis" because of their short limbs, big ears, and wolfish coat. Freyja's mother and father are both award-winning show dogs, and her adopted mommy and daddy love her dearly.

Toudi Tuesday

From MSN.com comes the Pictorial Proshness of “Toudi,” thought to be the world’s smallest Wah-Wah. She’s 12 weeks old, and weighs “just 300g and only reaches 7cm in height.”

And for those of us who don’t live in Toudi’s home of Wroclaw, Poland (where they embrace metrics,) that turns out to be 0.66138679 pounds, and 2.75590551 inches high.

(Say Like Wally Cleaver:) “Aw Gee, Beav!”

by Brinke

unnamedYes Sir and M’am! Today is International Beaver Day! How ’bout let’s check out Bath Time For Buttons, OK? According to sender-inner and video creator KB, “She is an orphaned baby beaver in the care of Farasyn Farms Wildlife Rescue in Oregon.”

“Orphaned baby beavers have to be in the care of a rehabber for two years before they’re able to make it on their own back in the wild. That takes so much dedication on the part of the wildlife rehabber. In addition to being adorbs, baby beavers are also prone to depression and temper tantrums.”

Baby Tamandua Wants Its Mommy!

by Andrew Bleiman

Oso Hormiguero 27 feb.

The second-ever Tamandua to be born in a Uruguayan zoo came into the world on February 27 at Bioparque M'Bopicuá.  Uruguay’s first captive-born Tamandua was also born at the Bioparque in September 2014. In the video below, the newborn calls to its mother, and she rushes over to check on her baby.

Dscn3640
Dscn3641Photo Credit:  Bioparque M'Bopicuá

Also known as Lesser Anteaters, Tamanduas may look strange, but every body part has a purpose.  Their long snouts can poke into anthills or termite mounds, and their sticky, 16-inch-long tongues gather up insects.  Huge front claws tear open termite mounds and help Tamanduas climb trees, while prehensile tails help them hang on.

Tamanaduas are big stinkers – literally.  They spray a smelly substance that’s said to be four times as powerful as a skunk’s.   This powerful scent makes Tamanduas unappealing to predators like jaguars.

Baby Tamanduas are born after a five-month gestation.  Right from the start, the babies sport very large claws.  Babies ride on their mothers’ backs for the first few months of life. At this time, Tamanduas are plentiful in their home range in Central and South America.

German Zoo Fans Are Taken With This Takin

by Andrew Bleiman

Takin-Jungtier Paulina_Hellabrunn_2015_Marc Müller (5)
A Mishmi Takin calf at Hellabrunn Zoo is already displaying the skills required to be a Takin: climbing, fighting, and leaping onto rocks.

Born on February 19, the calf, named Paulina, displays her amazing climbing skills by springing onto rocks more than twice her height. Adult Mishmi Takins can leap more than 12 feet.

Paulina was born to female Kim, who is nursing her calf and being a good mother.  The calf stood on her first try - an essential requirement for prey that need to run to survive.

Aside from mother’s milk, Paulina has nibbled on all the food that adult Takins like to eat, including carrots, hay, and pine needles.

Both female and male Takins have distinctive short, stout horns that curve upwards from the center of the head. Signs of baby Paulina’s horn growth began to appear three days after birth. This makes the little calf look like a mini version of her mother, who is nicknamed "Sporty Kim" by her keepers because she is so energetic.

Paulina follows Kim's every move and tests the power of her little horns by annoying her father, Till, who takes everything in stride.

Mishmi Takins are native to southeast Tibet, China's southwest Yunnan province, northeast India, and northern Myanmar. Their stocky, muscular bodies and two-toed hooves are well-suited to their mountainous habitat.  Their thick, shaggy coats are covered by an oily substance secreted by the skin, which protects against the cold, damp air of the Himalayas.

See more photos of the Takin calf below.

Sumatran Tiger Trio Got Their Stripes...and Names

by Andrew Bleiman

The three cubs together after their check ups (1)

In late January, Chester Zoo announced the birth of three endangered Sumatran Tiger Cubs. ZooBorns was excited to share the news and introduced our readers to the tiny trio.

The cubs, born to 8-year-old mum, ‘Kirana’, and 7-year-old dad, ‘Fabi’, were found to be two males and one female.  The, now 12-week-old, triplets were carefully examined, weighed and vaccinated by the zoo’s specialist vets and carnivore keepers.

Supporters of the Zoo were given the opportunity to vote on the names for the trio, and the top-voted monikers were recently announced. The two boys were named ‘Jaya’ (meaning victorious) and ‘Topan’ (hurricane). The girl was given the name ‘Kasarna’ (beautiful melody).

Gabby Drake, vet at Chester Zoo, said, “Sumatran Tigers are one of the rarest big cat species in the world, and our new triplets are very special cubs indeed. It’s really important for us to make sure they’re healthy and in good physical condition and we’re happy to report that all three of the cubs have been given a clean bill of health – they’re in tip-top shape.”

Gabby continued, “The cubs were given similar vaccines to those a pet cat receives when it’s taken to the vets. Of course we were much more cautious about handling the cubs than we would be with domestic kittens though. We checked them over as quickly as we could before returning them to their mum, Kirana. She’s a very good mother and fiercely protective of her young charges, so we certainly didn't want to hang around for long.”

Sumatran Tigers are found only on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. They are the smallest of all tigers and have the narrowest stripes.

Critically endangered in the wild, there are believed to be just 300-400 Sumatran Tigers left, as they are often targeted by poachers who use their body parts as traditional medicine. Much of their jungle habitat has also been destroyed.

More amazing pics, below the fold!

UPDATE! Happy Hollow Fennec Fox Kits Still Adorable

by Andrew Bleiman

22726_10155359129900176_325502097504815479_n

On Monday, March 30th, we started off your week with the undeniably adorable Fennec Fox kits, at Happy Hollow Park & Zoo!

The quad is back, to help round out the week, with images from their latest photo-op! As you can see, they are getting stronger and growing fast…ears and all!

The two boys and two girls were born, in January, to mom, ‘Safar’, and dad, ‘Clyde’.  Unfortunately, their mom’s previous offspring did not survive. Zoo keepers decided to hand-rear the recent litter, in an effort to increase their chances of survival. When the kits are strong enough, keepers anticipate being able to reintroduce them to their parents.

(*UPDATED! New video as of 12:40pm PT!) Yesterday we saw a hoomin givin’ Fiete The Big Cow the business with a massive rubdown, essentially sending Fiete to another planet.
