Where Our Food Crops Come From

by Miss Cellania

The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) conducted a vast study of global agriculture and how foods that originated in one region ended up sustaining different regions, both by exported agriculture and by exported food. Part of that study is a map that shows where those foods were once native plants. At the site, the map is interactive and at the top of the page you’ll find links to information specific regions and links to broader articles about the findings. You could end up spending the rest of the week learning about global food systems. -via Digg

Images That Will Restore Your Faith In Humanity

by Zeon Santos

(Image Link)

We're exposed to so much negativity these days, and there's so much strife and turmoil in the world, that sometimes it's nice to peruse a collection of positively inspirational images and stand proud again.

(Image Link)

It's easy to fall into a pattern of negativity and see everything through a dark lens when you're constantly tearing others down, but what we really need to do in these dark days is lift each other up.

(Image Link)

Why go around spreading hate when so many destructive forces in the world are already using hate as their weapon of choice? It may sound like a cliche, but there are times when the best way to kill hatred is with kindness.

The Day Of The Dead Parade In Spectre Was So Cool Mexico Wants To Do It For Real

by Zeon Santos

If you believe everything you saw in the latest James Bond film Spectre, then you probably think Mexico City has an awesome Dia de los Muertos parade, and you would be wrong.

(Image Link)

The truth is- Dia de los Muertos is generally more of a solemn holiday in Mexico, devoid of galas, parades or crazy costumes.

And yet the Day of the Dead parade in Spectre looks so cool that Mexico's Tourism Minister Enrique de la Madrid Cordero wants to make it happen because “tourists are going to come looking for the carnival”.

(Image Link)

Creating a Day of the Dead parade is the logical next step for Mexico, since the country paid $14 million to appear in Spectre, and that way the Mexican people can say they got something for their money, right? (sarcasm)

This Simple Invention Is Helping To Solve The Water Crisis

by Zeon Santos

Solving the water crisis faced by many countries in Africa and the Middle East seems like a massive undertaking involving lots of plumbing, construction and planning.

But there's a simpler solution which addresses the needs of the individual families instead of the nation as a whole- the Hippo Water Roller.

The Hippo isn't a re-invention of the wheel, simply a way to use the rolling motion to help people transport drinking water home far easier and in much larger quantities.

Before the Hippo started changing lives people could only carry about 20 liters of water home at a time, in a bucket carried on their head no less, but the Hippo allows them to roll 90 liters home easily and quickly.

40 Years Ago Today: The Raid on Entebbe

by John Farrier

Today is the fortieth anniversary of one of the most extraordinary special forces raids in military history. It was conducted by the Israeli Defense Forces to rescue civilian hostages held at an airport in Entebbe, Uganda.

On June 27, 1976, 4 Palestinian and German terrorists hijacked an Air France flight from Tel Aviv to Paris. They forced the pilots to fly to Libya, and then to Uganda, where they could rely upon the assistance of the dictator Idi Amin. There, the terrorists and Ugandan soldiers released some of the hostages, keeping 106 of them, most of whom were Jews or Israelis.

(Entebbe International Airport by Micha Sender)

After diplomatic efforts failed, the IDF launched a raid dubbed Operational Thunderbolt on the Entebbe airport where the hostages were held. This was conducted in C-130 Hercules and Boeing 707 aircraft flying 2,500 miles from Israel just above the ground and water to avoid radar detection.

On July 4, approximately 100 IDF soldiers landed unannounced at the Entebbe airport. They promptly drove a luxurious black Mercedes out of the doors of a C-130. Their plan was to trick the Ugandans into thinking that this mysterious force was being led by Idi Amin himself!

(Photo of the return to Israel by the Israeli Government Press Office)

It didn't work, so the commandos, led by Lt. Col. Yonathan Netanyahu (brother of the current Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu) attacked the Ugandan soldiers and the terrorists. They moved so quickly and so decisively that they were able to rescue 102 of the 106 hotages. The commandoes then destroyed Ugandan fighter jets on the ground and rushed the hostages back to the planes. They took off, refueled in Kenya, and returned to a joyous Israel.

Sadly, some of the hostages were killed while still in Uganda. There was also a single fatality among the Israeli troops: their commander, Lt. Col. Netanyahu.

But the raid on Entebbe was still seen as a great victory and an extraordinary demonstration of courage, planning, and military skill. The feat captured the popular imagination of the world, which led to the story being retold inseveralmovies.

A Georgia judge sentenced Kayla Dixon to 40 years in prison after she pled guilty to shooting a man over his Playstation 4. WSB-TV in Atlanta reports that Dixon gave her confession to the crime as part of a plea deal.

The horrific incident occured when Dixon and her boyfriend attempted to steal the Playstation 4 after 28-year-old Daniel Zeitz posted a listing for the console on Craigslist. Zeitz resisted, and Dixon shot him.

“I would trade anything, almost anything, to bring Daniel back. But I know I can’t,” she said in a statement to press. “I know he had plans. I wish I could tell him I’m so, so sorry that this happened, but I can’t.”

Cleveland Man Takes Not One, But Two Big Bites Of Shit

by Samer Kalaf

The video in this post is a man, wearing a wallet chain, eating shit at the Cavaliers’ parade. In this case, the phrase “eating shit” isn’t used to describe the man falling on his face. This guy picks up a piece of shit and takes a bite of it. Then, he takes the remnant and tosses it into his mouth as if it were a piece of candy.

This Army Specialist Had the BEST Response After Being Denied Leave to a Baby Shower

parenting,army,baby shower

His commanding officer told him "Men don't go to baby showers," so he put on his Ron Swanson pants and compiled a list of the manliest things he could possibly think of.

If that doesn't work, he might be sh*t out of luck.

OP: "Army Specialist was denied leave to go to a baby shower because his CO said "Men don't go to baby showers", so he changed his reason.

15 Fun Facts About Trading Places

by Miss Cellania
Enure01

I love this movie

The 1983 movie Trading Places used the familiar plot device of people in opposite situations literally trading places, as in The Prince and the Pauper and the story of the city mouse and country mouse. What made it special was how wonderful funny it was, and the film established Eddie Murphy as a bona fide movie star. Over 40 years later, it stands up well. Let’s learn something more about the production of Trading Places.

3. IT WAS ORIGINALLY A RICHARD PRYOR/GENE WILDER VEHICLE TITLED BLACK AND WHITE.

Richard Pryor was originally attached, but as director John Landis put it, he then "unfortunately set himself on fire."

4. LANDIS DIDN'T KNOW WHO EDDIE MURPHY WAS.

"48 Hrs. (1982) hadn't come out yet, but they'd previewed it, and Eddie Murphy had previewed very well, and they thought, 'Ah this kid's going to be a star,'" Landis recalled of his discussions with Paramount Pictures. "So they said, ‘What do you think about Eddie Murphy playing the Billy Ray Valentine part?’ And I of course said, ‘Who’s Eddie Murphy?’"

Ralph Bellamy, who played Randolph Duke, remembered a moment on set between himself, Don Ameche (who played his brother, Mortimer Duke), and Murphy in the makeup trailer on the first morning of shooting. "I said, 'Why, this is my 72nd movie.' And Don answers, 'Why, this is my 56th.' And Eddie Murphy looks embarrassed and said, 'Boys, this is my first. Ever.' It broke everybody up, and the movie became my biggest hit."

Well, it was Murphy’s second movie, but you should never let details get in the way of a good line. And it was the second movie role that Murphy landed after Richard Pryor was considered. Read the rest of the trivia list about Trading Places at mental_floss.

Fan Recasts Captain America: Civil War For Different Decades

by Zeon Santos

(Image Link)

The fact that Marvel movies like The Avengers and Captain America are coming out in the 2010s instead of the 1990s is mostly just a matter of studios dragging their feet and licenses changing hands.

Many of these movies were proposed and approved in the late 80s, and by the 90s development had begun, which eventually stuttered to a standstill until the 21st century.

Some of us have been wondering which actors would have been cast in the Marvel movies since they were first proposed, so Redditor thamonsta came up with a great idea- decade specific recasts for Captain America: Civil War.

He even took the premise a step further and came up with casts for the 50s (which is off since a few of the included actors weren't famous until the 60s) all the way through the 90s.

My personal fave is the cast from the 1970s- John Ritter as Ant Man and Burt Reynolds as Iron Man- sounds like a cult classic in the making!

Waitress with Incredible Reflexes Saves Falling Mug

by John Farrier

It's really dangerous to reveal mutant superpowers like this--and especially for something as trivial as a mug. Nonetheless, this waitress at the Posita bar in Moaña, Spain demonstrated her superhuman dexterity and reflexes when a mug fell off a high shelf.

She kicked it behind her back, sending it flying into a sink full of water. Her co-worker and customers reacted with horror when they realized that she's one of them.

Bread Truck Collides with Deli Meat Truck, Creating Sandwich Crash

by John Farrier

(Image: NBC)

NBC New York (auto-start) reports that trucks carrying deli meat and bread crashed together on a highway in New Jersey on Friday morning. There were no injuries, but there was a delicious mess as the two ingredients combined into plain but edible sandwiches. Highway workers cleaned up the mess by 7:30 AM, hopefully not getting too hungry in the process.

Now I'm off to try to arrange simultaneous crashes with trucks carrying corned beef, sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Thousand Island salad dressing.
