Propaganda & Soviet Textiles from the 1920′s

Over the weekend, a friend sent this link my way- it’s an extensive library of patterns that were produced during the 1920′s in the Soviet Union. With the Sochi Olympics on everyone’s mind, I thought the batch would be interesting to share, as they reflect life and culture through the lens of communism. The motifs reveal workers, peasant life, planes, locomotives, marine living, cotton picking, tractor riding, propellers, collectivization, mechanization, florals and symbolic repeats.

This concept, of course, wasn’t a new one, as every country fighting a war was in on the act, creating messaging through textiless. To learn more, check out this book from Yale University Press, Wearing Propaganda: Textiles on the Home Front in Japan, Britain and the United States.

Frankie’s Homage to Pattern

by Shayna Kulik

1frankie_magazine2frankie_magazine6frankie_magazine3frankie_magazine4frankie_magazine5frankie_magazine

Happy Monday! With temperatures swinging from 34 to 55 today, it’s  another confusing day for the east coasters. Many of us still have Fall fashion on the mind, but with imminent Spring on the horizon, we’re all on the cusp. Frankie’s latest issue hits a nice balance between the seasons- complimenting this sentiment.

Focusing on pattern through design, art, photography and fashion, the latest edition pays homage to texture. Showcasing work from Dinara Mirtalipova (the cover art), Elizabeth Olwen,  Kendra Dandy and plates from Crown Lynn, Mikasa, Johnson of Australia and Casual Cream, the layouts are eclectic and the DIY activities, useful. It’s fun to see how various mediums showcase and celebrate the art of pattern. Pick up a copy, I personally think this issue’s a collector’s item.

I just had the pleasure to meet one of the co-founders of Switzerland based Studio Banana. Key Portilla-Kawamura is one of the forces behind the wonderful Ostrich Pillow and now it’s smaller brother the Ostrich Pillow Light, pictured above. These pillows are made in a small town in Spain and revived a dying factory. What is not to love?

Key also gave a CreativeMornings talk in Geneva a year ago. Yay for smart creative people making cool stuff. And yay for the internet connecting us all.

San Francisco just got even more eye-popping with MINE‘s branding and environment design for Bun Mee’s new Market Street location. From the large, beautifully illustrated mural down to the small details (the jalapeño warning being my favorite), it seems they really perfected the whole experience.

Eclectic and Colorful: Hotel Crayon Paris

by Caroline Williamson

Eclectic and Colorful: Hotel Crayon Paris

For February, Destination Design travels to the City of Light, Paris, to get a peek at the Hotel Crayon Paris. With the help of artist Julie Gauthron, the property explores color blocking and the playful interior is full of vintage finds that were discovered throughout France. The mix of colorful decor brings Gauthron’s vision of “bohemian chic” to light, making it an environment you’ll want to kick back and relax in.

The dreamy location, right in the heart of Paris’ 1st district, is just four blocks from the Louvre Museum and countless cafés and patisseries.

The eclectic blend of furnishings combines vintage pieces, like this sofa, with a collection of Tom Dixon Beat Lights in the various shapes.

The quirkiness continues with the walls and the child-like illustrations that are seen throughout.

The Junior Suite is perhaps the quirkiest and most artistic of all the 27 rooms. Different wallpaper patterns were used in fairly monochromatic colors, leaving room for people, especially Gauthron’s daughter, to color in. Hence the name of the hotel.

by Caroline Williamson

Kids, Going to Sleep Just Got a Lot More Fun!

With help from designers at Mathy by Bols, it might just be easier to get your kids to go to sleep at night, or at least get them to sleep in their own bed. If I had had a cool bed like one of these growing up, I’d never have gotten out of bed! If your kid has ever dreamed of sleeping in a fort, tent, or treehouse, these über fun beds are just for them.

The Cabin Tent Bed is an A-frame bed that will make your kid feel like they’re sleeping outside without having to actually go outside and deal with all the bugs. The bottom section pulls out for storage or for an additional bed.

The Camper Bed is shaped just like a classic teardrop trailer that your kids can sleep in year round. They can hang out, play with their toys, or go to sleep inside. The door opens, just like it would on a camper, and it even had cut-out windows and a retractable roof.

Pear Tarte Tatin

by Elise
Pear Tarte Tatin on Simply Recipes

Have you ever made a tarte tatin? It’s classic French rustic tart, made like an upside down cake, in a cast iron skillet. You create a caramel base at the bottom of the pan, top with sliced fruit such as apples, pears, or quince. Top again with a pastry crust, either rolled out dough or puff pastry, tuck the edges of the pastry into the pan, bake until bubbly and brown, and then carefully turn out onto a serving dish. The result? A beautifully browned crust topped with a lovely arrangement of fruit cooked in a caramel sauce.

Australian Residence Engaging with the Backyard by Anderson Architecture

Mosman House Australian Residence Engaging with the Backyard by Anderson ArchitectureAn existing federation house in Mosman, Australia, became a delighting living environment after the renovation. The team responsible with the project, Anderson Architecture in collaboration with the interior design studio,  MacKenzie Design Studio, managed to put together their creative ideas, in order to create a functional eco-friendly home for a family with strong values towards sustainability and eco-friendliness. Renovation consisted in opening the back of the house to better engage with the backyard. Passive solar techniques and low-watt LED lighting as well as solar hydronic floor and water heating were used to reduce the costs and power usage.
Transition between environments Mosman House Australian Residence Engaging with the Backyard by Anderson ArchitectureAs the rear of the house faces north, the extension was designed to capitalise on passive solar techniques to reduce heating and cooling costs. The use of sustainable, recycled and locally sourced timber and hardwoods featured throughout the project for finishes, shingles and flooring, most notably on the staircase to the first floor.” The main focus was to incorporate as many sustainable features as possible and transform the house without harming the environment or spending a fortune on high-end heating and cooling systems. Local hardwood, including recycled timber, was used to add a sense of style and warmth throughout the house.

22 Hard To Kill Houseplants

by decor8

Looking for some hard to kill houseplants? I am! That’s why I was SO EXCITED when I woke up this morning and found the most super awesome comment on my post about house plants, Let’s Talk About Plants. Sandra, a long time reader, works in a flower shop in Sweden and put together a lovely list of plants that she thinks are fairly easy to care for. I did some digging around to verify her suggestions and ended up finding a few of my own so I’ve compiled a list of 22 house plants that are hard to kill for those of us who have a bit of a brown thumb. I have to thank Sandra for her amazing comment, it really inspired me to pull together this post, so thank you so much Sandra!

Why Madrid street artist SpY is the Spanish Banksy

by Inigo del Castillo

Why Madrid street artist SpY is the Spanish Banksy

Madrid-based street artist SpY – considered the ‘Spanish Banksy’- has been leaving his mark on various urban landscapes since the 1980s. In the ‘90s, he switched from graffiti to something a bit unconventional – mixing and matching everyday items to make installations with a whole new meaning.

He’s replaced a phone with a banana in a phone booth, he put in a potted plant on top of a basketball hoop, and he painted a basketball court design onto a skate park. ‘Interventions’ like these provide us with a fresh perspective of things around us and life in general.

His artist statement says: ‘SpY’s pieces want to be a parenthesis in the automated inertia of the urban dweller. They are pinches of intention, hidden in a corner for whoever wants to let himself be surprised. Filled with equal parts of irony and positive humor, they appear to raise a smile, incite reflection, and to favor an enlightened conscience’.

Recently, he installed 150 CCTV cameras on a wall in Madrid. The installation meant to make people reflect on how they interact with surveillance technology, and the people behind these watchful eyes.

Timothy Goodman: Airbnb Installation

by Courtney

Timothy Goodman recently completed an impressive, permanent 60-foot wall installation for Airbnb, the culmination of almost three months of preliminary work and 10 days in-house. The team came to him with a blank canvas and the goal of illustrating their experiences together, and let Timothy get creative.

Timothy Goodman: Airbnb Installation / on Design Work Life

Timothy Goodman: Airbnb Installation / on Design Work Life

Timothy Goodman: Airbnb Installation / on Design Work Life

The first step was to conceptualize what the project would become, how it would look and how it would function. And once the decision was made to utilize the building’s unused plywood as the canvas, the process entailed creating multiple renderings to determine the sizing to use, the composition of the pieces on the wall and how the pieces would be hung.

Timothy Goodman: Airbnb Installation / on Design Work Life

Timothy Goodman: Airbnb Installation / on Design Work Life

Once the structure and layout was determined the fun part began— exploring what the individual drawings would actually be. Timothy had the Airbnb team write down hundreds of their “moments” and then went through that text and picked things to illustrate. They then went back and forth on revisions until all of the drawings were approved before any installation took place.

Timothy Goodman: Airbnb Installation / on Design Work Life

Timothy Goodman: Airbnb Installation / on Design Work Life

Back in April, I was asked to come up with ideas for creating a permanent 60-foot wall installation in the dining hall of Airbnb’s amazing new offices located in San Francisco. After an intensive discovery of ideas and execution options, we took plywood that was used for the construction of the new building and cut and painted 115 pieces in varying sizes. From there, I worked with an art hanger to securely hang all the plywood on the wall. Finally, I hand drew over 115 “moments” that represent internal experiences that employees have shared together over the years.

Delicious Bites: Apple and Cranberry Tea Cake

by decor8
Jimena Azpeitia

Dodi quiero uno de estos!

Hello everyone, are you ready to bake again or still recovering from indulging during the holidays? Whether ready or not, I’m sure you will be soon again, especially when your family starts to crave your homemade goodies! How are you anyway? I hope you’re all doing well and enjoyed the holiday break and are filled with inspiration for the coming year. This is Jillian and I have a wonderful New Years recipe for you to enjoy over Sunday afternoon tea and newspaper reading… I don’t know about you, but today was my first day back at work following a 2 week break. I decided that I needed something to sweeten the first working day of 2014, so I made an apple and cranberry yeast cake for morning tea. This recipe was inspired by a rhubarb yeast cake recipe from Stephanie Alexander’s book, ‘The Cook’s Companion’.

apple cranberry yeast cake

Fresh cranberries are impossible to find in Australia where I live, so we have to use frozen or dried cranberries. Maybe it is the same where you live? Rhubarb would make a great substitute if you can’t find fresh or frozen cranberries. If you’re not keen on cranberries, you could make an apple and walnut version instead swapping out the cranberries for some walnuts and sultanas (golden raisins) and use lemon juice and rind instead of orange to flavor the fruit and the glaze.

cranapples

I recently bought a stand mixer with a dough hook and it made whipping up the dough for this cake a breeze. Once you’ve made the dough and rolled it out, it’s then filled with loads of sweetened fruit. The top is slashed before baking to allow some of the fruit to peek through. If you don’t feel like doing this you could always roll up the dough and slice it to make scrolls.

I then finished the cake with an orange glaze but that step is optional. If you don’t feel like icing the cake, you could just brush the uncooked cake with melted butter and sprinkle the top with some cinnamon sugar before baking.

Method
Put the butter and milk in a small saucepan and stir over a low heat until the butter melts and the milk is lukewarm. Add the vanilla and set to one side. Mix the flour, sugar and dried yeast in an electric mixer fitted with a dough hook. Make a well in the centre, then with the motor running, add the egg and sufficient milk mixture to make a soft dough then knead until smooth and shiny (5 minutes). Transfer the dough to a greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap and stand in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

While the dough is proving, make the filling. Combine all the ingredients in a bowl apart from the cinnamon and set to one side for 30 minutes. Drain the fruit, reserving the juice for later. On a lightly floured surface, punch the air from the dough; then roll out to a 20cm x 30cm (8 x 12 inch) rectangle before transferring to an oven tray lined with baking paper. Spread the drained fruit over the middle of the dough, leaving a 5cm (2 inch) border along the long sides. Sprinkle the filling with the cinnamon. Cut the long sides through to the filling at 3cm intervals using a pair of kitchen scissors. Fold the ends of the dough over the filling and then fold strips alternately across the filling in a criss-cross pattern, pressing the ends to seal. There should be glimpses of the filling within. Cover the cake with a tea towel and stand in a warm place for a further 30 minutes, to prove.

Preheat the oven to 180ºC/350ºF. Bake the yeast cake until the crust is golden, a skewer inserted withdraws clean and the filling is cooked ~ 30 – 40 minutes. You may need to cover the yeast cake with baking paper to prevent over browning. Cool on the tray for 15 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely. For the orange icing, mix the icing sugar, 1-2 tbl of the reserved juice and the melted butter in a bowl or until smooth. You may need to use a little extra reserved juice. Drizzle the icing over yeast cake and serve. I use a 20 ml tablespoon and a conventional oven. You’ll need to lower the temperature if you’re using a fan forced oven.

By the way, the cake is best eaten the day it’s made but I had some for my breakfast this morning and it still tasted pretty good. Good luck with your return to work. See you again next month with another Delicious Bites post – Jillian.
