Cool pixel art reimagines films as ’90s video games

Pixels may have given the pixelated art form a bad rap, but it can still be an impressive means of translating pieces of entertainment. Many artists are able to turn film and TV characters into pixelated creations that would be right at home in a ’90s CD-ROM game. An Israeli artist, Gustavo Viselner, has captured multiple memorable scenes from films as beautiful pixel art

It Took 3 Years, But Someone Finally Beat The ‘American Ninja Warrior’ Course

by Penn Collins

Fans of Spike TV‘s American Ninja Warrior saw history made last night, as not one, but two contestants beat the entire course in the championship round. Isaac Caldiero, a busboy from Colorado, beat out Geoff Britten, a Baltimore Orioles cameraman by 3.6 seconds, entitling the former to a cool $1 million.

In previous seasons, not only had no one completed the entire course, but no one had even made it to the fourth stage, which turned out to be a 75 foot-tall rope.

Don’t worry, Geoff. You’ve got this thing next year. Give ‘em hell.

Come for the LOLs, Stay for the Debate

by Miss Cellania

The folks at reddit are doing image memes based on places. It’s a twist on the old “come for the ____, stay for the _____” slogan. It started off with Arkansas. Colbert did that one long ago.

Shortly afterward, Minnesota joined in. The Minnesota karma train roared through the discussion.

Chicago was mentioned in the comments under the Minnesota post.

Then there was Nashville. As in the other posts, opinions were divided as to the city’s advantages and drawbacks.

North Dakota is currently the highest-ranked post of this kind. There may be more coming.

Phenomenal

Some superfans will buy practically anything related to their franchise. "Practically" is the key word there. For in a galaxy far, far away from the right far, far away galaxy exists a galaxy that is Very Wrong. That is apparently where these unofficial Star Wars items are designed. And, naturally, there's a Tumblr for that.

One Man Dared To Reply To Scam Emails, And His Replies Paid Off

by Zeon Santos
Corey

So good.

As soon as you open an email account the scammers seem to come out of the woodwork, and suddenly you start meeting Nigerian princes and winning lotteries you never entered.

We've all seen it, dealt with it and, more often than not, deleted it, but funster James Veitch didn't feel comfortable leaving these people hanging.

He figures if they have the courtesy to reach out to him directly for help then he should be courteous right back by replying to the tales of their plight, so he has been replying to scam emails for over two years.

The results of his research on responding to scam emails can be found in the book “Dot Con: The Art Of Scamming A Scammer", which includes many of these scam-to-scam interactions in easy-to-read email format

If it weren't for the valiant efforts of caring individuals like James Veitch hundreds of scam emails would go unanswered each year, and the opportunity to write books about scam emails would be lost.

This Toilet in a Bar Was Made Specifically for Puking

by John Farrier
Corey

The Pub needed this.

Redditor ThangCZ says that a nightclub in the Czech Republic has a chest-high toilet made specifically for vomiting. The steel supports helpfully provide steadiness for the generously inebriated. I suppose that if you own a bar where people regularly barf, then this is a practical innovation. Note to the very drunk: puking only.

Couple Uses First Level Of ‘Super Mario Bros.’ To Announce Pregnancy (Video)

by The Movie God

Super Mario Bros. Pregnancy Announcement

You're not going to find many pregnancy announcement videos here at Geeks of Doom, we promise (unless of course it's for April Fools' Day), but this was too good not to share. Most..."news"...outlets report on a pregnancy when it involves some Hollywood it couple or royalty, which is boring and unnecessary. This non-Hollywood couple decided to make their announcement in a much more entertaining way, that will no doubt make any geek smile.

The couple used the familiar first level of the classic Nintendo video game Super Mario Bros. to make the announcement, tweaking it a bit to fit their current life story and capping it off with the big news (spoiler alert?).

You can check out the video below. [...]

‘Hardcore’ Trailer: Sharlto Copley Stars in the Insane First-Person Action Movie

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

This looks WILD!

Hardcore trailer

The Toronto International Film Festival is in full swing, and with it comes teases of some of the movies playing at the Canadian film showcase. Today we have a NSFW glimpse of a sci-fi action movie called Hardcore, which was shot entirely from a first-person perspective, not unlike a live-action video game.

Executive produced by Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) and written/directed by Russian filmmaker Ilya Naishuller, the first Hardcore trailer has arrived before the film’s premiere, and this looks like an absolutely insane movie, complete with telekinesis, naked girls, tons of gunfire, explosions and a lot of crazy fun.

Here’s the trailer for Hardcore from Biting Elbows:

We’ve highlighted Hardcore before, and even saw a bit of footage from the first-person POV movie last fall. Ilya Naishuller’s work may be familiar to you if you saw the two viral shorts Insane Office Escape and the sequel Insane Office Escape 2, both shot from a first-person perspective, too.

In this trailer, we get a nice set-up of the story, and it really does feel like you’re playing a video game. Specifically, I was reminded of Portal in the opening sequence, but then it just turns into a sort of first-person Grand Theft Auto experience.

Sharlto Copley (District 9) seems to be playing multiple characters, but what’s interesting is that unlike a movie such as Cloverfield, the main character is in a way made to be the viewer. In the synopsis, the main character is billed as “you,” putting you right in the action (though the character’s name is Henry, as said in the trailer). But other actors include Danila Kozlovsky and Haley Bennett as your dead wife, who is suddenly alive in front of your eyes and has just brought you back to life. Yeah, this sounds pretty crazy.

Hardcore is playing at TIFF this weekend, but there’s no word on when we might see the film hit theaters in the United States, so you’ll just have to wait patiently until we get any release information. If you want to know more about the movie, here’s the official synopsis:

You remember nothing. Mainly because you’ve just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry and congratulations, you’re now a cyborg. 5 minutes later, your wife has been kidnapped and you should probably go get her back. Who’s got her? His name’s Akan (Danila Kozlovsky), he’s just a psychotic megalomaniac with telekinetic powers, and a never-ending army of mercenaries. You’re also in an unfamiliar city of Moscow, Russia and everyone wants you dead. Everyone, except for a mysterious British fellow called Jimmy (Sharlto Copley). He might be on your side. Good luck Henry. You’re very much likely to need it…

Some great stuff in here.

New Fall 2015 TV Shows

It’s September, and that means new television is just around the corner. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert really kicked things off, but it’s not until later this month that the new fall 2015 TV shows really swing into full gear. What will audiences latch onto this season?

Well, we’re not sure what’s going to land and stick around, but we’ve come up with a list of 16 Most Anticipated New Fall 2015 TV Shows, ranging from the return of The Muppets on ABC to the small screen versions of movies like Limitless on CBS to cable offerings such as Ash vs the Evil Dead and even a couple new Netflix shows.

Check out the full list after the jump!

#16. Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris

Premiere Date: September 15th on NBC

Why We’re Excited: Neil Patrick Harris has made the long-winded Emmy, Oscar and Tony award telecasts a little easier to endure by bringing his charisma, energy and general cheekiness to the table, and now he’s doing that with his very own show. Based on a British variety show and feeling like a throwback to the old days of television, the show will be full of sketches, pranks, audience fun, musical numbers (of course) and who knows what other kind of shenanigans. Sounds like it could be a blast.

Official Synopsis:

Five Emmy Awards and a Tony Award make multi-talented Neil Patrick Harris the perfect star for this live one-hour show that is unlike any other currently on American television. Complete with stunts, skits, pranks, audience interaction, musical numbers, giveaways and unlimited surprises, this show proves that anything can happen, and it can happen to you. Based on the wildly popular British hit “Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway,” the modernized variety show format and its fearless, multi-talented star will make for one of the best nights ever on TV week after week.

Neil Patrick Harris, Orly Adelson, Siobhan Greene, David A. Hurwitz, Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly executive produce. “Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris” is produced by ITV Studios America.

#15. Moonbeam City

Premiere Date: September 16th on Comedy Central

Why We’re Excited: It’s an animated series much different than what we’ve come to expect from Comedy Central. Taking cues from anime and the 80s, particularly the art of Patrick Nagel, the show certainly has influences of Archer, and it looks just as ridiculous. But for me, the big selling point is the voice cast, which includes Rob Lowe in the lead role as Dazzle Novak, and supporting characters played by Elizabeth Banks, Will Forte and Kate Mara.

Official Synopsis:

The animated series Moonbeam City stars Rob Lowe as Dazzle Novak, a detective in America’s most fluorescent metropolis, whose desire to serve is second only to his nonstop sex drive. But with Chief Pizzaz Miller (Elizabeth Banks) cramping his style and his rival Rad Cunningham (Will Forte) undermining him at every turn, he may have to face the (very synthy) music and do some actual police work.

#14. Blindspot

Premiere Date: September 21st on NBC

Why We’re Excited: While this has the potential to fall into typical serial mystery territory, getting drawn out and taking too many twists and turns, there’s something about NBC’s new show that has me curious. Maybe it’s Jaimie Alexander in the lead role, covered in tattoos, popping out of a gym bag in Times Square. Maybe it’s just the vibe of The Bourne Identity with a woman in the lead role. Or maybe it’s because the show hails from Greg Berlanti of The Flash and Arrow. Whatever it is, I’m intrigued to see where this goes.

Official Synopsis:

From executive producer Greg Berlanti (“Arrow,” “The Flash,” “The Mysteries of Laura”) comes “Blindspot”: A vast international plot explodes when a beautiful Jane Doe, completely covered in mysterious, intricate tattoos, is discovered naked in Times Square with no memory of who she is or how she got there. But there’s one tattoo that is impossible to miss: the name of FBI agent Kurt Weller, emblazoned across her back. “Jane,” Agent Weller and the rest of the FBI quickly realize that each mark on her body is a crime to solve, leading them closer to the truth about her identity and the mysteries to be revealed.

The cast includes Sullivan Stapleton, Jaimie Alexander, Audrey Esparza, Rob Brown, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Ukweli Roach and Ashley Johnson.

Martin Gero serves as writer and executive producer. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and director Mark Pellington also executive produce. “Blindspot” is produced by Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions.

#13. Minority Report

Premiere Date: September 21st on Fox

Why We’re Excited: It’s a pseudo-reboot/continuation of the Steven Spielberg directed sci-fi film, based on the short story of the same name by acclaimed sci-fi author Philip K. Dick. The pre-crime program is dead, but one of the former pre-cogs has returned to law enforcement in secret to help a police detective by helping to stop the murders that he keeps having visions of before they happen. It’s the appeal of the Minority Report world meeting the crime procedural genre of television that has piqued my interest, and I’m hoping it’s not too repetitive or dull.

Official Synopsis:

The future is coming. Based on the international blockbuster film by executive producer Steven Spielberg and the first of his films to be adapted for television, MINORITY REPORT follows the unlikely partnership between a man haunted by the future and a cop haunted by her past, as they race to stop the worst crimes of the year 2065 before they happen. Set in Washington, D.C., it is 10 years after the demise of Precrime, a law enforcement agency tasked with identifying and eliminating criminals…before their crimes were committed. To carry out this brand of justice, the agency used three precogs – “precognitives” Dash, Arthur and Agatha – who were able to see the future. Now, in 2065, crime-solving is different, and justice leans more on sophisticated and trusted technology than on the instincts of the precogs. Precog DASH (Stark Sands, “Inside Llewyn Davis”) – driven by his terrifying, but fragmented visions – now has returned in secret to help a brash, but shrewd police detective, LARA VEGA (Meagan Good, “Think Like A Man” franchise, “Californication”), attempt to stop the murders that he predicts. As they navigate this future America, they will search for Dash’s missing twin brother, ARTHUR, and elude others who will stop at nothing to exploit their precog abilities. Also complicating matters is Dash and Arthur’s ingenious, but reclusive, foster sister, AGATHA (Laura Regan, “Mad Men,” “Unbreakable”), who just wants Dash to return home. A drama of crime and conspiracy, this is a timeless story of connection: two lost souls, Dash and Vega, who find friendship, purpose and redemption in each other.

#12. The Grinder

Premiere Date: September 29th on Fox

Why We’re Excited: There’s just something about Rob Lowe and Fred Savage playing feuding brothers that tickles my fancy. Plus, I love the fact that this series will likely skewer the silliness of some legal dramas that never seem to end on network television and TNT. Savage has long had a place in TV history thanks to The Wonder Years, and having him star in a comedy series as an adult (after directing episodes of shows like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelpha, Party Down, Happy Endings, Modern Family and tons more) has a lot of potential to be something really fun.

Official Synopsis:

How many TV lawyers does it take to try a real-life case in a real-life courtroom? One, and his name is THE GRINDER. Starring Emmy Award nominee Rob Lowe (“Parks and Recreation,” “The West Wing”), THE GRINDER is a new comedy about a famous TV lawyer at a crossroads. When his legal series ends, he decides to move back home and join his family’s real law firm – despite having no formal education, no bar certification, no license to practice and no experience in an actual courtroom. DEAN SANDERSON (Lowe) spent eight seasons playing the title role on the hit legal drama “The Grinder.” Now he’s moving back to his hometown of Boise, Idaho, where his brother, STEWART (Emmy Award and Golden Globe Award nominee Fred Savage, “The Wonder Years”), is a real-life attorney who is poised to take over the family law firm. It doesn’t take long for Dean to start injecting his TV drama into every aspect of Stewart’s life, both in the courtroom and at home, impacting Stewart’s wife – and Dean’s high school sweetheart – DEBBIE (Mary Elizabeth Ellis, NEW GIRL, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”); their two kids, 15-year-old LIZZIE (Hana Hayes, “Bucket and Skinner’s Epic Adventures”) and 13-year-old ETHAN (Connor Kalopsis, “Days Of Our Lives”); and Dean and Stewart’s father, the law firm’s head, DEAN SR. (William Devane, “24: Live Another Day”). Dean and Stewart don’t see to eye to eye, but when they stop arguing with each other and start arguing together in court…they make a formidable team. THE GRINDER is the story of two brothers, who took different paths, but meet again in the middle – for justice…sort of.

#11. Heroes Reborn

Premiere Date: September 24th on NBC

Why We’re Excited: After the original iteration of Heroes crashed hard, despite such a promising first season, rebooting series sounds like the best idea. In addition to bringing back characters from the original series, there’s a whole new cast of superpowered characters to drive the story, including Chuck star Zachary Levi in a lead role. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of this “new” show is that the series only has a 13-episode order, so the show won’t overstay its welcome hopefully, and won’t have any hollow filler episodes just to meet a quota.

Official Synopsis:

After a terrorist attack in Odessa, Texas, left the city decimated and lives in shambles, those with extraordinary abilities are in hiding after being blamed for the catastrophic event. A new world order has them being hunted by those with nefarious motives, such as Luke (Zachary Levi) and Joanne Collins (Judi Shekoni), who are out to avenge a tragic loss of their son. Meanwhile, Noah Bennet (Jack Coleman) has taken measures to put his old life behind him and start over, until he comes face to face with Quentin Frady (Henry Zebrowski), a conspiracy theorist out to uncover the truth behind the Odessa tragedy. Elsewhere, some are discovering their newfound skills. Awkward teen Tommy (Robbie Kay) just wants to be normal and win the girl of his dreams, Emily (Gatlin Green), but normalcy is virtually impossible after learning of a new ability that terrifies him. Coming from a very sheltered upbringing, a bold and ethereal teenager, Malina (Danika Yarosh), has been told she is destined for greatness. In Tokyo, a quiet and unique young woman, Miko (Kiki Sukezane), is trying to track down her missing father while hiding an extraordinary secret that will make her a force to be reckoned with. In Los Angeles, a different type of hero is emerging through former soldier Carlos (Ryan Guzman). For better or for worse, some are fated to cross paths with assorted heroes of the past and together their ultimate destiny is nothing less than saving the world and mankind.

Ice-T has some startling information for you in these fake SVU...

Corey

3rd one is my favorite

Ice-T has some startling information for you in these fake SVU screencaps

The entire Law & Order franchise is rife with ripped from the headlines stories, including tales of internet abuse, Duggar drama, and whatever dumb shit Mel Gibson is up to these days. And while the series—and in specific, the SVU iteration of the series—has a tendency to be at least semi-realistic when dealing with its tales of both law and order, it can also get pretty ridiculous. That’s the gist of this new set of images in which Ice-T details various Law & Order plots as imagined by Imgur user SnakeEyes. With T’s Odafin Tutuola detailing everything from the horrible effects of the new street drug Sweet Chowder (a potent mix of cocaine and sourdough) to the plight of a six-year-old girl who was tragically “promoted to manager, then forced to fire herself right before Christmas,” the set is a look at just how ridiculous the Dick Wolf universe both could and absolutely does get.

This guy recasts movies with vintage actors, gives them appropriate posters

Some of our best quantum models suggest that there may well be an infinite number of alternate universes, with infinite variation in degree of difference from our own reality. While we’re not saying definitively that New York-based illustrator and designer Peter Stults has his own personal wormhole and is plucking movie posters from other dimensions, we’re not refuting the idea either. Stults, whose body of work also includes magazine covers and proposed alternative posters for current movies, has spent the past several years recasting movies from the last few decades with vintage actors, and then designing posters for those movies that look like they came straight out of the relevant era.

Danny Trejo as Mexican Batman Looks “Legit”

by Ben Bien
Corey

What?

By show of hands, who would watch a Mexican-style Batman movie directed by Robert Rodriguez and staring Danny Trejo? I would for sure. It’s no secret that Batman is universally loved, especially in Mexico where a new art gallery shows different renditions of the famous bat-cowl. After reading about the ‘Mariachi Batman’ art that’s big in Mexico City, a creative imgur user decided to dream up what the Dark Knight would look like if he were played by Danny Trejo. He was sure to include Trejo’s trademark intimidating look, complete with full mustache. So what do you think, would you

‘Mallrats 2′ Has Found Its Mall

by Penn Collins

Lest you think that a critically-panned sophomore effort with the slightest bit of a cult following would be exempt from the current wave of nostalgia for all things 90s…nope. Mallrats 2 is a real film that’s going to get made. It’s even got a mall.

That mall is the Exton Square Mall in Pennsylvania. The mall from the first film, which was set in New Jersey, was actually in Minnesota.

Here’s a tweet from a thin-looking Smith showing off the sign for the new location:

We found our MALL, y’all! This January, @ExtonSquareMall in Exton, PA will star #Mallrats 2! Thanks, StarStream! #MR2pic.twitter.com/5zD4cAo9YR

— KevinSmith (@ThatKevinSmith) September 10, 2015

The characters (and their actors) from the first one will all be returning with one unknown. Jason Lee, Shannen Doherty, Jeremy London, Jason Mewes, and Stan Lee are all down, but it’s unclear if Ben Affleck will be returning as the proprietor of Fashionable Male.

We sure hope he does.

Weatherman Liam Dutton Nails the Pronunciation of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch

Yes, it’s a real name of a real place and this weatherman is the absolute boss for nailing its pronunciation.  British weather guru Liam Dutton must have prepared for this moment his entire life. The guy barely blinked as he described the temperatures in Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. “There’s always a chance that you can stumble, but that’s the nature doing the job,” Dutton told Wales Online. “But you soon learn from your mistakes quickly, when people let you know you’ve said it wrong!” In case you are wondering, yes, it’s a real place. The village was named in 1860, in an attempt to create a railway station with the longest name. The name is sometimes shortened to Llanfair PG. But come on. There’s no fun in using that crappy name is there? Definitely not. Just watch this guy’s skills. They’re ridiculous.

The F*cking Catalina Wine Mixer From ‘Step Brothers’ Is Happening in Real Life

by Angie Han

Step Brothers

As anyone who’s seen Step Brothers knows, the Catalina fucking Wine Mixer is a huge fucking deal. It’s been the biggest helicopter leasing event in the Western Hemisphere since 1997. It’s for people who want to make bank, get ass, and drive a Range Rover. It’s also completely fictional — or at least it was, until this year.

The Santa Catalina Island Company has just announced the first annual real-life Catalina Wine Mixer. Just like the movie, it’ll feature live music, gourmet food, fine wine, and of course, a helicopter landing on the lawn. Get details on the Catalina Wine Mixer after the jump.

The Catalina Wine Mixer will be held Sunday, September 13 from 12-9 PM at the Descanso Beach Club. While Uptown Girl — the strictly ’80s Billy Joel cover band from the film — won’t be there, entertainment will be provided by The Dan Band, whom you may recognize from your other favorite R-rated comedies like The Hangover and Old School. Adam Lasher (of American Idol) and Tom Solis will also perform.

A $35 general admission ticket ($20 for children 12 and under) gets you all day access to the event and a souvenir wine glass. Been earning and burning, snapping necks, cashing checks? You can shell out $100 for a VIP pass that gets you access to a private bar, a private wine tasting, VIP hospitality suite, and complimentary food stations. And if you’re really ready to run with the bulls, you can additionally book a helicopter as your ride to the event.

According to a spokesperson, organizers had wanted to put on a real-life Catalina Wine Mixer since the movie opened in 2008. But things never quite worked out until this year, when a recently renovated venue became the perfect location for the event. “Everything came together and it was perfect time,” she said.

Go to VisitCatalinaIsland.com for more details.

ahahahaha

Every single thing in the world is right about this shot.  Overweight young black guy setting up in what appears to be the aisle with soaps and stuff.   All the confidence in the world.  In fact so much confidence I would compare this to instances of when you’re bowling and just turn around before you even watch the ball strike the pins. I bring up black guy because who enters the picture?  Of course it’s an unsuspecting middle aged white guy wearing a hat that’s….white.   Our shooter of course turns around because he’s sure he’s nailed this shot. What he doesn’t know is that his ball is about to clock Mr. White guy in the head and Mr. White guy is about to take a nice spill.  The slow motion is what makes this video fantastic. See for yourselves. This is gold. Shot What a shot!Like my page MrTechnicalDifficult Posted…

Iconic Dishes and the Cities That Made Them Famous

by Lisa Marcus

Toasted Ravioli | Image: Timothy Boyd

Everyone has their food favorites, but do you know where and how the recipe originated? Sometimes we eat foods in our own corners of the world and are surprised when they are nowhere to be found when we travel. Conversely, we may be on vacation and stumble upon a delicious dish that we are unable to forget. The linked article mentions a number of beloved foods and explains their origins.

One of those foods is toasted ravioli. The delicious, slightly crunchy yet soft and chewy outside has a flavorful filling of beef, cheese, spinach/artichoke or whatever is desired. Toasted ravioli originated in St. Louis, Missouri, specifically at Blueberry Hill, a lively restaurant and bar that often features live bands. As the origin story goes, a cook at the establishment "accidentally" dropped ravioli into a deep fryer instead of hot water. Whether it was an accident or not, the outcome was savory.

Learn about the origins of more iconic dishes here.

The Sport of Drunken Horse Racing

by John Farrier
Corey

This is spectacular. Puts the Palio in Siena in perspective.

(Photo: Vice/Benjamin Reeves)

It is truly the sport of kings! To the Maya living in the Sierra de los Cuchumantes Mountains in Guatemala, drunken horse racing is an important tradition. Unlike, say, the Kentucky Derby, the riders are absolutely smashed. In fact, some are so drunk that they have to be tied into the saddles by their alleged “friends.” Atlas Obscura reports on a race in the town of Todos Santos:

Predictably, a few riders flew out of their saddles, landing with a dull thud in the loose dirt. Others slowly slumped to the side before gently reaching terra firma and giving up, their relieved horses continuing on without them.

The majority of the riders somehow made it to the finish line, but even after several hours of watching, it was never exactly clear who “won” or what the prize might be. Advil? A heating pad? Exemption from next year’s race?

In Todos Santos, it was recently reported that the winner of the annual drunken horse race was given a live chicken and the title of El Capitan.

Now that Disney owns Star Wars, we see the iconic Leia slave outfit crossing over into the Disney Princess universe. In the past, we've seen slave Leia versions of Tinkerbell, Ariel, and Elsa.
