Newswire: Stephen Colbert delivers a “Hot Take” on Sesame Street’s move to HBO

by Marah Eakin

Of course political pundits would have something to say about Sesame Street’s recent move to HBO. And while Stephen Colbert is no longer the hot-air-blasting conservative blowhard he played on The Colbert Report, he weighed in with his thoughts on the move on last night’s The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. In a segment titled “Stephen Colbert’s Hot Takes,” Colbert laid the hammer down on Grover, Elmo, Big Bird, and even Oscar, complaining that HBO appears to have gentrified the street upon its recent move. Now, Colbert notes, Oscar lives in a compost bin and Big Bird’s nest sits in a low-slung tree, rather than just in a sort of wooden garage thing. As Colbert hastily notes without research—thus fitting the segment’s “hot takes” moniker—he “not likes” the move, claiming that “after 45 years,” he’s going to have to finally stop watching ...

Great Job, Internet!: The sight gags fly fast and furious in this Batman V Superman trailer remix

by Joe Blevins

The much-hyped release of Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice is only about two short months away now, and expectant fans have probably already seen the film’s teasers and trailers many times over, especially the one in which Henry Cavill and Ben Affleck have a tense conversation at some fancy party while a giddy Jesse Eisenberg cracks wise in the background. If a person were to watch that same trailer over and over again on a continuous loop for, let’s say, seven or eight hours straight, he or she might start to hallucinate wildly, perhaps imagining that the two famous superheroes were wielding comical props or even interacting with myriad non-DC characters from pop culture. That is the best mindset with which to view Aldo Jones’ self-described “weird” remix of the Dawn Of Justice trailer, as this YouTube clip more than lives up to its billing. While Jones ...

Great Job, Internet!: John Oliver gallantly rescues some funny, unused graphics from obscurity

by Joe Blevins

HBO’s Last Week Tonight With John Oliver has a team of talented, dedicated graphic artists ready and able to fabricate any image its host may require, no matter how ridiculous, be it Paul Giamatti dressed as a mango, Kid Rock driving a monster truck through a Dairy Queen, a classy magazine called Cockfighting Aficionado, or even Paul Giamatti dressed as a mango. (That last image merits two mentions since it seems to be John Oliver’s very favorite.) Admittedly, the sight of the weary-eyed Sideways star clad as a juicy, colorful stone fruit is striking and memorable. Tragically, though, Last Week Tonight only has a 30-minute running time, meaning that not all of these hilarious images receive the airtime they deserve. Fortunately, as the program nears the end of its hiatus, John Oliver is sharing some of the best “lost graphics” in a two-part series of web-exclusive videos.

Unsurprisingly ...

The Greatest Free Throw Distraction in Basketball History

by John Farrier

(Video Link)

The opposing team has earned a free throw. That's an easy point, which can make a decisive difference in a tight game. So the task of the defending team is to distract the thrower from the bleachers. Be bold. Be outrageous. Do whatever it takes to knock the mental balance of the thrower off.

In this case, the fans of Sheridan High School in Thornville, Ohio--dubbed the "Red Regiment"--staged an elaborate childbirth of a full-grown teenager in immediate view of the thrower all while yelling "Push! Push! Push!"

Did it work? Watch the video.

Giant Dog Takes Vet Tech for a Rodeo Ride

by John Farrier

Dexter is a Boerboel, a working and guard dog of South African origin. At 175 pounds, he’s a lot for the vet techs to handle. Here he is at the veterinary clinic getting his nails trimmed. Two techs appear to have him under control while the third works on his nails. But when a 175-pound dog decides to leave, nothing is going to stop him. Dexter bolts and one tech rides him like he’s a bucking bronco at a rodeo.

The remaining vet tech appears to crack up laughing.

Steve Coogan, John C. Reilly To Play Laurel and Hardy In ‘Stan & Ollie’

by The Movie God

Laurel and Hardy

A pair of actors have been chosen to step into the massive shoes of legendary comedy duo Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, best known simply as Laurel and Hardy, in a movie about the pair titled Stan & Ollie.

Laurel is set to be played by Steve Coogan, best known for his work on Philomena (for which he scored two Academy Award nominations), Alan Partridge, Tropic Thunder, the Night at the Museum movies, and more. He was recently seen in the short-lived Showtime series Happyish. Hardy will be played by John C. Reilly, who is best known for his roles first in dramas like Chicago (for which he was nominated for an Oscar), Boogie Nights, Magnolia, and Gangs of New York, and then comedies like Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story, Step Brothers, and Wreck-It Ralph. He was also seen in a smaller role in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy. [...]

‘Labyrinth’ Honest Trailer: David Bowie Steals Pretty Much Every Scene He’s In

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

Love this movie.

Labyrinth Honest Trailer

We were all crushed by the death of David Bowie. Not only was the man a rock god, but he also had a strong influence in the genres of sci-fi and fantasy. And in honor of the late Starman, the folks at Honest Trailers have decided to take on Labyrinth. But before you go thinking that a video series traditionally used to mock movies is a pretty crappy way to honor a recently passed icon, just watch the Labyrinth Honest Trailer and see how it’s all about praising the fact that David Bowie singlehandedly makes this movie an ’80s gem.

Here’s the Labyrinth Honest Trailer from Screen Junkies:

Yes, just as the Honest Trailer says, this movie is as weird as you would expect a movie to be from George Lucas, Jim Henson and Terry Gilliam. But it’s a testament to the power of Bowie that audiences have loved this film for years, and as the trailer says, don’t seem to care that he’s playing a “kidnapper with the hots for a 16 year old.” Speaking of which, for those who don’t remember, that teenage in 1986 was Jennifer Connelly.

Anyway, even aside from Bowie’s inspired performance as Jareth the Goblin King, this ’80s movie is certainly a nostalgic favorite. But it’s also one of those movies that just isn’t quite as good if you didn’t grow up with it as a child. At the very least, the movie gave us a wonderful musical number with Bowie and his package, because if there’s one thing kids loved in 1986, it was a dude in make-up with tight pants on.

Stan Lee Is Just Crazy Enough to Think a ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Avengers’ Crossover Could Happen

by Jacob Hall
Corey

For Patton's Citizen Filibuster, which is one of my favorite things ever.

avengers star wars crossover

Stan Lee is one of popular culture’s more fascinating icons, a man whose importance to various artistic mediums cannot be understated. In his wake lies a complex legacy, where his undeniably vital contributions continuously do battle with those who were left wounded by him (just ask Jack Kirby’s estate). Without Lee, the Marvel comic book universe as we know it would not exist. Spider-Man, the X-Men, the Hulk, the Fantastic Four, Daredevil, and countless other characters wouldn’t exist. He is a genius and an icon of the 20th century who will be discussed long after he’s shuffled off his mortal coil.

However, Stan Lee also likes to talk and Stan Lee loves to talk about things that he has literally no involvement in whatsoever. After all, he hasn’t been actively involved in the inner workings of Marvel in decades. He’s more of a mascot now, a figurehead, Marvel’s own Mickey Mouse. Thankfully, Lee’s chatter tends to be entertaining, especially when he says crazy things about Disney merging the Avengers and Star Wars franchises to create some kind of uber-blockbuster.

In an interview with The Big Issue (via Uproxx), the 93-year old Lee spoke about the potential of a Star Wars and Marvel crossover. After all, both universes are currently owned by Disney, so it is theoretically possible. And Lee seems totally okay with this thoroughly outrageous concept:

If they feel that incorporating Star Wars with the Marvel characters will be very successful, they’ll find a way to do it. Can you imagine Spider-Man saying, ‘May the force be with you?’ It may come to that!

But let’s not dismiss Mr. Lee too quickly. After all, he does point out that the Avengers only came about after he threw a bunch of disparate characters together. So why not add the cast of Star Wars to the mix:

I created the Avengers by taking many of our characters and making a team out of them. We can have as many characters join the Avengers as we want to for future movies. That might be fun, all of a sudden Luke Skywalker is an Avenger!

If all of this sounds familiar, that’s because Patton Oswalt foresaw this event a few years ago when he guest starred on Parks and Recreation. Asked to improvise a small town government filibuster, he rambled for nearly ten minutes about a Disney-orchestrated movie event that saw that Star Wars and Marvel universes merge together. If you haven’t watched it, you should get on that:

Look, it’s clear that Disney isn’t going to merge these two franchises anytime soon. Both are too successful on their own and a crossover reeks of desperation. This is the kind of thing you’d expect to see in a few decades, when Marvel and Star Wars have officially worn out their welcome. At the same time, you can never accuse Stan Lee of not seeing future trends and paving the way for others to follow.

Feel free to craft your Marvel/Star Wars fan fiction in the comments below. We call dibs on a Boba Fett/Loki team-up movie, okay?

VOTD: Are These the Most Beautiful Shots in Film History?

by Ethan Anderton
Corey

Great stuff.

Most Beautiful Shots in Movies

Late last summer, the cinephiles at BuzzFeed put together quite the extensive list of what they called 129 of the Most Beautiful Shots in Movie History. Undoubtedly this is just the tip of the iceberg of all the gorgeous cinematography out there that brings movies to life, but it was a good place to start.

Inspired by this post, editor Jim Casey decided to round up all the shots from the countdown and put them in motion with the actual clips in question. Movies you’ll see include The Nightmare Before Christmas, Raiders of the Lost Ark, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Nosferatu, Road to Perdition, North by Northwest, and tons more. Watch!

Here’s The Most Beautiful Shots in Movie History from Jim Casey (via FirstShowing.net):

Surely there will be some disagreement among you cinephiles as to whether these are really the most beautiful shots in movies. Personally, as much as I love Quentin Tarantino and Reservoir Dogs, the shot on display from that movie doesn’t strike me as one of the most beautiful from movie history. In addition, I feel like there’s a better shot from Pleasantville that could have made the cut here.

At the end of the day this is all subjective, and there’s no way to capture all of the shots that even a majority of movie fans would consider beautiful. But at the very least, it’s great to see such gorgeous cinematography rounded up to remind us of the power of the motion picture. And if you need even more cinematic beauty, don’t forget about this video from a few years ago called 135 Shots That Will Restore Your Faith in Cinema.

What are some of your favorite and most beautiful shots from movie history?

Warning: The First Trailer for Key and Peele’s Keanu is Hilarious

by Neil Miller

Key and Peele in Keanu

Last year the world lost Key and Peele the Comedy Central show. It was a sad time for anyone who had been loyally following the two MADtv alums and their wonderful brand of humor. In 2016, we are going to realize what we gained in the loss of Key and Peele: filmmakers Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.

In the first trailer for the first in what will hopefully be a litany of cinematic adventures, Key and Peele star in Keanu, the story of two men trying to reclaim their cat from a group of dangerous drug videos. This is exactly the kind of movie made for our Internet generation. It involves Key and Peele, a cute cat, and all kinds of cultural fish-out-of-water-ness. Also Will Forte as a very shifty character.

The first trailer is red band, so trigger warning for colorful language:

Keanu also stars Nia Long, Method Man, Rob Huebel and Luis Guzman. It’s directed by longtime Key and Peele collaborator Peter Atencio.

Peter Atencio also dropped this poster via Twitter. I’m dying:

To Enter This Speakeasy You Have To Go Through An Adult Bookstore

by Zeon Santos
Corey

Fine.

The speakeasy trend is still going strong, but nowadays these "secret" drinking spots don't need to hide because of Prohibition laws- they're just using a gimmick to attract adventurous patrons.

But don't get me wrong, gimmicks can be fun as long as they enhance the experience, and a fun gimmick can really set the mood!

A new speakeasy in Los Angeles called Adults Only requires patrons to make their way through a video store to the adult section, where they can head behind the curtain and drink in the lap of old time luxury.

The juxtaposition of cheeky entrance and classy interior makes for a memorable speakeasy experience, and the video store isn't actually in operation so you don't have to feel like a pervert walking into the place!

Guy Falling For 9 Seconds While Trying To Shovel Snow: The Remixes

by Zeon Santos
Corey

I audibly laughed at this.

Slipping and sliding while shoveling snow is something many people can relate to right about now, and something that will become even more relatable in the coming months.

But the person falling down doesn't generally see the trip as a laughing matter, so they have to laugh at the guy doing the snow shovel dance in this video instead.

(YouTube Link)

His slick snow shoveling moves are so hot they melt the ice, so video remixers took him to all sorts of stellar places, including an intense battle with that shufflin' Sith Darth Maul.

Four years before the Force awakened, a Star Wars star took on angry aliens

WATCH THIS: Attack The Block (2011)

When The A.V. Club reviewed Attack The Block in 2011, critic Nathan Rabin described John Boyega’s lead performance—as a small-time gang member from the South London projects named Moses—as “potentially star-making.” In a way, it was: Directed by first-timer Joe Cornish, Boyega’s debut film earned positive reviews and the kind of cultish fandom enjoyed by producer Edgar Wright’s oeuvre, which made Hollywood take notice. He appeared in the miniseries revival of 24, was being considered for the new Terminator movie, and there was even talk of him appearing in the upcoming Star Wars movie. Flash forward a few years and more than a billion dollars later, and Boyega has had his truly star-making turn as Finn in The Force Awakens, and with it, some measure of cinematic immortality.

The try-hard charm of Killer Klowns From Outer Space created its...

Corey

This is a crazy and horrifying and great movie.

The try-hard charm of Killer Klowns From Outer Space created its own cult

WATCH THIS: Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988)

Cinematic freak shows that actively attempt to court their own cult following have historically had a rough go; audiences tend to find charm in oddball projects blissfully unaware of their own camp appeal, rather than those that try to force it. Killer Klowns From Outer Space (note the second “K”) wants very badly to be liked. Director Charles Chiodo and his brothers—Edward and Stephen, with whom he cowrote the screenplay—make no effort to obscure just how hard they’re trying, and therein lies the enduring appeal of this bizarro horror-comedy. The Chiodos exhibit no self-awareness in pursuing the heights of weirdness—they’re not poseurs, they’re big, sloppy dogs happily chasing the cult-object ball. The film is patently absurd, but the filmmakers are fully committed to that absurdity. It’s hard not to respect.

Darkwing Duck To Get Dangerous Again On Disney XD [Updated]

by Erik Amaya

Darkwing-Duck-Get-DangerousUPDATE: As it turns out, I’ve been fooled a few months early. The possibility of Darkwing Duck‘s return comes from an old April Fool’s post. Mix that with some wishful thinking and a fondness for the original series and it leads to posting far too fast.

Of course, a popular April Fool’s story from long, long ago presaged a Tron video game and sequel film. So, perhaps, someday the terror that flaps in the night will invent new monikers for himself in a new animated series. Just not in 2018.

ORIGINAL STORY FOLLOWS:

According to TV Overmind (via io9), Darkwing Duck is returning to television.

The early-90s animated series featured the egotistical, but well-intentioned costumed crimefighter bumbling his way to success with the help of adopted daughter Gosalyn and sidekick Launchpad McQuack. He eventually acquired a memorable rogues gallery including villains like Megavolt, Quackerjack and Negaduck.

He and the rest of the cast will be part of a new Darkwing Duck series airing on Disney XD. In a statement, the network said, “Our new series will bring that same energy and bumbling crime-fighting spirit that fans have come to love about Darkwing Duck.”

They also added, “We’re also going to add a gritty look that this generation of kids love. It’s our goal that fans of old and new will enjoy the new Darkwing Duck.”

The new series is set to air in 2018.
