How Much Does Everyone Working on a Blockbuster Movie Get Paid?

by Casey Chan on Sploid, shared by Adam Clark Estes to io9
How Much Does Everyone Working on a Blockbuster Movie Get Paid?

You made it! You’re in a movie! You’re a superstar! Not quite. Vanity Fair made this clever credits sequence showing how much people working on a film with a $200 million budget would get paid, and it’s pretty revealing. If you’re the lead actor or the director, sure, you’ll do fantastically well. Even if you’re the production designer or handle the special effects make-up, you’ll be great. But most people on a movie set won’t get to sniff those millions of dollars that’s been put into the movie.

Saga

by Matt DeVoe

crystalOne of the most frequent questions by all collectors in this hobby is “What’s the next comic book to shoot up in value?” When I was 10 years old, I clearly remember asking my local comic shop owner this same question. He replied with, “Kid, if I knew that, I wouldn’t be working here.” That sums up this hobby perfectly. Obviously, we never really know. Some of the most successful price jumps have been surprises. Alternatively, most can be assessed with common sense and a keen eye for market waves. While this isn’t fool proof, I’ll make my own educated guess on books you should be investing in now, tomorrow and for the near future. These aren’t quick flips nor will they be quick risers. These are your “fine wine” books that need time to age properly. So, with that said, let’s look into the first entry of this month’s Crystal Ball.

SAGA by Brian K. Vaughan & Fiona Staples (Image Comics)

1st App Alana, Marko, The Will, and The Lying Cat

INFO

SAGA was released March 2012 to a rough 37,641 print run and continued on for 5 additional printings (see the bottom for the first issue print run info).

Did you know that this is Image’s best selling book? Yep, even more so than the juggernaut known as THE WALKING DEAD. Looking at comichron, the most current Saga issue #36 had a print run of 49K and WD was about 67K. Sure, obviously the WD is selling more monthly issues. However, that gap was pretty tight over the past few years with the difference being less than 10K. But what makes Saga so profitable are the trade sales. For example, Saga Vol. 5 TP 1st print had a print run of 29,387 (for comparison, in March 2016 WD Vol. 25 released to a 19K print run). Think about these numbers for a second: $14.99 price tag and 29K run. This trade will continue to see printing after printing after printing. And it has done just that; since September 2015 it’s be reprinted every single month, slowly dropping a few hundred as it goes. But it never disappears. All former volumes are still reprinted nearly every month. Saga Vol. 1 released in October 2012 and reached 120K copies less than a year later. THAT’S where all the money is coming from. Amazon has ranked Saga Vol. 6 as a “Best Seller” and it doesn’t even release until this July.

Don’t believe the numbers? Just ask your comic shop what their (1) most consistent money making book is, (2) most consistently requested book and (3) what they most recommend to new comic readers. The answer will likely be Saga. In 2013 it won 3 Eisner Awards (Best Continuing Series, Best New Series and Best Writer) and 6 Harvey Awards (Best Writer, Best Artist, Best Color, Best New Series, Best Continuing or Limited Series, and Best Single Issue or Story), in 2014 it won 3 Eisners (Best Painter/Multimedia Artist, Best Writer, and Best Continuing Series) and 2 Eisners in 2015 (Best Continuing Series and Best Penciller/Inker). It’s absolutely the most celebrated comic on the shelf currently and quite possibly on its way to “of all time”.

People like to use the phrase “it’s the next Walking Dead” for the most random new books. While its overuse is exhausting, if there’s any book that comes close, it’s SAGA.

saga

ENTERTAINMENT SPECULATION

The market value for issue #1 is currently $125 raw, with the variant well over $800 raw (and raw copies for the RRP nearly never come up for sale). And while those are not easy entry prices, it’s really just the beginning. The term “unmake-able” has been thrown around in nearly every circle that engages in a “Should Saga be turned into content?” conversation. Even BKV has publicly expressed his preference in it not being turned into entertainment. However, I absolutely know that this is being shopped around Hollywood. Studios are paying attention to this property.

BKV is an entertainment creative. No comic writer knows the industry better than he does (expect for maybe Straczynski). He’s written and won awards for immensely successful shows like LOST. Heck, the initial solicitation for this book was “STAR WARS meets GAME OF THRONES”, two very successful entertainment properties. And just look at the incredible cast of characters. There’s already a ton of Lying Cat merchandise. I can see each issue shooting up in value when a character appears on screen (yes, like the WALKING DEAD). If any entertainment professionals are listening, offer Mr. Vaughn the ability to write and executive produce his Epic Space Opera with a sack of cash with a dollar sign on the outside, and he will (for our sakes) hopefully have a hard time saying no. And the first network/studio smart enough to do so will greatly profit. This really isn’t a matter of “will it get made?”, it’s “when?”

COMIC SPECULATION

For you “comic optioned” naysayers, let’s say it never gets turned into an entertainment property.

First off, it’s beloved by fans, shops and critics. It’s award winning and still the best selling title for Image. To top it all off, it’s only in it’s infancy at issue #36.

And where was Walking Dead at issue #36? Well, it definitely wasn’t an expensive book at all. In fact, it was probably about the same price if not less. We forget that WALKING DEAD wasn’t always a $1K+ book. In December 2009, WD #1 was $125/$150. In January 2010, when it was on issue #69, AMC announced it was officially going to be a show and made the value of the first issue jump to $250. The official AMC Frank Darabont 8 episode show order in May 2010 pushed it to $350. Even by November 2011, THE WALKING DEAD #1 could easily be bought for $400. By March 2012 (2 seasons in), around issue #83, WD #1 was a $700 book. It took 3 (3!!!) full seasons to finally break $1000 (and as a side note for those questioning other comic shows…. books DO go up if the show is a huge hit).

Keeping ALL of that WD comparison in mind, Saga’s stride is even more steady and consistent, even without entertainment. Every few months, this first issue jumps $5-$10. Yes, if you’re flipping comics, that’s incredibly slow. However, it’s organic and fan driven. Books that have this special formula carry a level of security with it. So, yes, if this is never made into content and you wield a normal size level of patience, you will STILL see a strong return on your investment.

Saga 2012 C2E2 Diamond Retailer Edition (RRP) Saga #1 1st App Alana, Marko, The Will, and The Lying Cat

Saga 2012 C2E2 Diamond Retailer Edition (RRP) #1

CRYSTAL BALL

Review time. Huge increase in profit with strong entertainment potential? Check. Fan/critical darling with steady and organic profitable growth? Check. It’s a no brainer. While the variant is already unreachable and at a price that most of us can’t “just sit on” (but could eventually be among the most expensive moderns), SAGA #1 and the next several issues (and subsequent printings) are books that should….. No, MUST be in your collection and should in no way be selling them right now. Hunt them, buy them, HOLD them and tuck them into your long box. There’s no book with more potential than SAGA right now. My personal guess is that we will see it optioned in the next two years and on our TV screens in about 3 years. So, yes, if you want a true investment book and if you’re looking for an answer to “What book is going to be worth something?” or even an answer to “What’s the next Walking Dead?” this article’s answer is SAGA.

PRINT NUMBERS FOR #1

1st Print: 37,641 (March 2012), Orange Title

Diamond Retailer Summit Variant: 500 (April 2012)

The 2nd & 3rd print were both released in April. The combined print run that month was 9,641. The below is a very rough estimate as I simply divided them by half. Since they were printed around the same time, this is probably not too far off (unless they “tacked on” the 3rd quickly to fill last minute orders).

2nd Print: 4,820 est. (April 11, 2012), Black Title

3rd Print: 4,820 est. (April 18, 2012), Blue Title

4th Print: Below 1,400? (no comichron info) (May 2012), Orange Outline w/ white fill

5th Print: 4,484 (June 2012), Black Outline w/ white fill

Saga 1 Image First: ? (December 2012)

There’s conflicting information out there from an interview with Image in 2012 that the 1st issue had combined printings of 70K copies. But the above numbers don’t reflect that. Reading an article ICv2 in May 2012, Image Publisher Eric Stephenson mentioned they’re “getting to the 70,000 mark”. The word “getting” seems vague and any amount could fall under that umbrella.

For rarity, my vote goes to the 4th Print (with the 3rd print being a very strong contender if that April number wasn’t an even split).

(Note: All print numbers above were pulled from http://www.comichron.com.  These numbers provided by Diamond Distributors are not a full representation of actual print runs as they don’t report international sales nor direct sales from the publisher.)

Welcome to another season of Game Of Thrones reviews for those who have not read the books the series is based on. Since critics won’t be receiving screeners this season, each week I’ll publish the episode page once the broadcast ends and add my review to the page when I finish. That way newbies have a spoiler-free place to discuss the episode as soon as possible. As such, spoilers are strictly forbidden. Any spoilers in comments will be deleted on sight. Remember: Discussions of things that were different in the books or confirmations of things that won’t happen count as spoilers, too. Have you read the books and want to discuss whats coming? Newswire: Nick Kroll and John Mulaney to play animated teenagers for Netflix

by Sam Barsanti

Nick Kroll wrapped up his Comedy Central series Kroll Show last year, and more recently has been pulling tuna-related pranks along with John Mulaney as part of Oh, Hello. But now he’s finally making his big return to television—or at least streaming television. That’s because Netflix has just given a series order to Big Mouth, an animated comedy co-crated by Kroll and Family Guy writer (and Kroll’s longtime friend) Andrew Goldberg.

According to a press release, Big Mouth is “edgy” and “surreal,” and it focuses on Kroll and Golberg’s “teenaged adventures in puberty.” Kroll will be playing the kid version of himself, with John Mulaney playing the kid Goldberg, and their voices will be heard alongside people like Jason Mantzoukas, Jordan Peele, Fred Armisen, Jenny Slate, and Inside Amy Schumer’s Jessi Klein. In a statement, Kroll said that he “can’t wait to tell ...

‘The Walking Dead’ Star Norman Reedus Wants To Play Ghost Rider

by The Movie God

Ride with Norman Reedus

While it's not really news, The Walking Dead and The Boondock Saints star Norman Reedus is grabbing some headlines for saying's he'd be down for taking on a role that actually makes lots of sense for him: Johnny Blaze, better known as Ghost Rider. See what Reedus had to say below.

Reedus's Walking Dead character, Daryl Dixon, often navigates the zombie apocalypse on a bike, and the actor even has a new reality series on AMC starting soon called Ride with Norman Reedus in which he, quite simply, travels around on a bike with friends in different locations (see a preview of the show below). So starring in a new Ghost Rider could be a perfect match. [...]

Bruce Campbell Sets Record Straight On Beaten Trump Supporter

by Dan Wickline

A violent and disturbing image hit the web on Monday showing a woman covered in blood with a claim that it was a Donald Trump supporter and she was beaten by liberal activists. Now the image was not posted by the Trump campaign, but rather a twitter account called Conservative Nation. It has received over 600 retweets and over 400 likes.

But, that’s not what the picture is showing. Actor Bruce Campbell took to twitter yesterday to set the record straight. The woman in the photo is actress Samara Weaving and the photo is from a make-up test for Ash vs The Evil Dead.

And, in this case, the correction has far outreached the initial post as Campbell has received over 5000 retweets and almost 5000 likes. You would think that in this day and age people would understand that you can’t just grab an image off the web and use it for whatever purpose you want… whether for illegal art reproductions or political statements… without someone coming along and calling you out on it.

Love these.

There are lots of hoaky posts offering life lessons and advice online, but they're usually just full of quotes supposedly said by famous people and don't really capture our attention.

But Alex Noriega isn't a celebrity or professional life coach, he's just an illustrator who enjoys creating and sharing little visual info nuggets with cartoon flair he calls Stuff No One Told Me. (Contains NSFW language)

Some of Alex's observations really hit home, others are too silly to be taken seriously, but the cartoon art is always cool so enjoy these nuggets with a grain of philosophical salt.

John Oliver gets into the debt-buying business, makes TV history

Last night, Last Week Tonight With John Oliver devoted about two-thirds of the show to debt buyers, who are in the unenviable position of making regular old debt collectors look good.

In a stunt similar to the founding of Our Lady Of Perpetual Exemption, Last Week Tonight formed Central Asset Recovery Professionals Inc., or CARP, which was promptly offered a nearly $16 million portfolio of medical debt in Texas for less than $60,000. Oliver and his staff snapped it up in an effort to show up Oprah Winfrey, among other things. Winfrey’s infamous car giveaway in 2004 was estimated to be worth $8 million, and held the record for biggest TV giveaway until Last Week Tonight forgave about $16 million of debt on air last night.

‘Game of Thrones’ – The 10 Most Important Moments in “The Broken Man”

by Jacob Hall

the broken man recap header

We’re at the point in Game of Thrones season 6 where all hell is set to break loose. And it will. Next week. “The Broken Man” is the second table setting episode in a row, but it feels necessary with so many pieces in play. When the credits roll here, just about everyone is in a perilous and desperate position. Blood will flow next week and the week after. This week was all about preparing for battle – the swords will unsheathe soon enough.

the broken man recap the hound

The Return of Sandor Clegane

“The Broken Man” begins with a cold open, making it the fourth episode in the series so far to do so. It quickly becomes obvious why: Sandor Clegane, aka the Hound, is alive (if not particularly well) and living in some kind of religious community run by Brother Ray, played by the great Ian McShane. A normal opening would have given away Rory McCann‘s name in the credits and spoiled the return of one of Game of Thrones‘ best characters, who seemingly perished at the end of season four after a battle with Brienne of Tarth. By coming before the opening titles, Sandor’s comeback is treated like a proper event. The show really is so much more interesting when everyone’s favorite bad-tempered-but-sympathethic monster is on the chess board. He’s like a classic Universal Monster – you love him despite the fact that he’s also a vicious murderer. It’s just his nature.

The nature of his return is far different from the books (but we’ll tackle that below). He was found dying on the side of the road by Brother Ray and he was nursed back to healthy by Brother Ray, a soldier-turned-Septon who couldn’t be more different than the other religious figures on the show. Unlike Melisandre, he’s no zealot. Unlike the High Sparrow, his simple ways don’t fuel insane and terrifying mania. He’s the closest thing Westeros has to a hippy commune leader – he’s coarse but he’s honest, he’s gentle but tough enough to temper the Hound. And he’s also dead when the credits roll, because genuinely good men don’t last long on Game of Thrones.

the broken man wildlings

The Starks Recruit the Wildings

A significant portion of this episode is dedicated to watching Team Stark scramble across the North, desperately seeking the aid of various houses that were loyal to Eddard and Robb before everything went to hell. Stop one was easily the most successful of the bunch: Jon Snow officially confirms support from the Wildlings after a meeting with their leaders. It’s the kind of scene where the twenty-foot-tall Giant attending the meeting stands up, gives the former Lord Commander of the Night’s Watch a nod of approval, says “Snow” and goes about his business, a message that everyone else in the circle can instantly translate.

However, the scene also makes it clear that this group actually owes Jon their loyalty. He rescued them at Hardhome before literally dying for them. They may be unconventional allies, but it’s an alliance built on blood spilled and slowly solidifying mutual trust. How many times has Tormund seen Jon act with his people’s best interests at heart? Unlike every other alliance on this show, there is no politics here and no silly back-and-forth. Winter is coming and the dead are coming and these are the only Stark allies who truly know what this means.

the broken man recap mormont

The Starks Try to Recruit Everyone Else

The rest of the Stark Recruitment Tour doesn’t go quite as well, but it does lead to a character introduction for the ages. A visit to Bear Island, home of House Mormont, brings Jon, Sansa and Ser Davos face-to-face with Lyanna Mormont, the 10-year old Lady of the house. Bella Ramsey is incredible in her few minutes of screen time, beautifully portraying a young girl who has been forced to grow up far too quickly and takes her responsibilities very seriously (no walnut-smashing here). Like Jeor and Jorah, she proves herself very capable of representing one of Westeros’ key supporting families. She’s tough and she’s measured and she’s wise enough to take Davos’ warnings about an army of the undead seriously. Most importantly, she offers House Stark her support…and all 62 of her men. But hey, it’s something, right?

The visit with House Glover reflects the faltering allegiances of the North. Why should they be loyal to the family that got so many people killed when it was House Bolton that helped them take Moat Callin back from the Ironborn? Centuries of pacts were broken alongside Robb’s forces at the Twins and the Stark name is melting away like snow in springtime. This isn’t the first time the Starks have faced desperate odds, but all of the pluck and courage and nobility in the world can’t compete with an actual army headed by a vicious psychopath.

Of course, Sansa happens to have an army hidden in her back pocket. All she needs to do is contact the man who left her in the belly in the beast. All she has to do is is trust the one man who should never be trusted. Then again, could the Starks take back the North without the help of Petyr Baelish and the Knights of the Vale?

Interesting.
In case you needed another thing to worry about, eels jump up and shock things.

In his writings, naturalist and intrepid explorer Alexander von Humboldt recounted how natives in Venezuela used horses to lure and trap electric eels. Many scientists thought it was just a tall tale, but a new paper lends credence to Humboldt’s account of eels aggressively leaping up and stunning the horses with a series of high-voltage discharges.

Listen: This Remix Sets J.K. Simmons’ ‘Whiplash’ Insults to Some Fresh Beats

by Ethan Anderton

Whiplash Remix

Even though Whiplash came out back in 2014, it’s one of those movies that it doesn’t hurt to talk about every so often simply because it’s so damn good. One thing that makes the movie so outstanding is the incredible jazz soundtrack. But not everyone is a fan of the orchestral musical style, so Eclectic Method’s Johnny Wilson and 16-year-old DJ/producer Genranon decided to take the jazz, pump some high energy electronic music into it. The real catchy part comes from J.K. Simmons’ dialogue being remixed into the music as well, including all the yelling about rushing and dragging.

Listen to the Whiplash remix tune after the jump.

Here’s the remixed track titled “Whiplashup” from the Eclectic Method YouTube (via The AV Club):

This is undoubtedly obnoxious and it totally ruins the beauty of the jazz soundtrack, but it’s also pretty catchy and it’s hard not to tap your foot to it just the same. Thankfully, the creators are self-aware enough to know that they are totally disrespecting jazz as the video description reads:

“In true respect to jazz this is one of those rare electronic tunes that goes through multiple keys in a 2-5-1 chord progression in 5/8 time signature…… Only joking it’s a 4 to the floor smasher totally disrespectful to jazz as a whole but totally in keeping with the yelling rage of band leader Terence Fletcher. The modern classic that won 3 Oscars and was nominated for 5 has been cutup, rejiggled and made into a dance floor DJ friendly remix by Genranon and Eclectic Method.”

If you haven’t seen Whiplash, do yourself a favor and watch it as soon as possible. You will not be disappointed.

The network has already given a series order to the comedy Crashing, produced by Judd Apatow and starring Pete Holmes, and now they’ve picked up another promising series with a great comedic talent in the lead.

Barry is a half-hour comedy following an ex-Marine working as a low-rent hitman in the Midwest, and it’s just been given a series order at HBO with Saturday Night Live veteran Bill Hader writing, directing and starring in the lead role. Find out more about the Bill Hader HBO series below.

In what sounds like a show with a similar comedic tone as Grosse Point Blank, Barry sees the title character feeling lonely and unhappy with his life. But while traveling to Los Angeles on an assignment to kill someone, he ends up stumbling upon a community that might give his life meaning: the Los Angeles theater scene, complete with a group of misfits who just might be stranger than him.

In addition to Hader, Deadline reveals the rest of the cast includes Henry Winkler as Gene Cousineau, an inspiring acting teacher; Stephen Root as Fuches, a man who arranges Barry’s hits; and Sarah Goldberg as Sally, an aspiring actress who is Barry’s entree into LA’s theater scene.

Hader is also executive producing the show as part of his exclusive development deal with HBO, which means this show is totally his baby. The pilot actually marked his directorial debut, and it was clearly good enough for HBO to order it to series.

The question is whether Hader will continue to wear all these hats for the show’s first season. We’re not sure, but Hader has done plenty of writing before, having worked at Saturday Night Live, where performers do plenty of their own writing. Plus, he worked on the writing staff of South Park for 27 episodes, not to mention collaborating with Fred Armisen for the IFC series Documentary Now!, which you should watch immediately on Netflix.

HBO has put forth some incredible comedy over the years, and I’m excited to see this new roster of shows they have coming over the next couple years. Production on Barry is supposed to begin in 2017, so hopefully the show premieres sometime next year as well.
