Super Mario Bros. in New York? No, this isn't New Donk City. Nor is it that regrettable Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper film. Instead, we've got software developer Abhishek Singh recreating Nintendo's most iconic level, Super Mario Bros. World 1-1, reimagined as an augmented reality game in Hololens.

Using Microsoft's AR headset, Singh has recreated each obstacle from Shigeru Miyamoto's perennial classic and projected them as holograms in Central Park. Of course, only the wearer of the headset will see them. Everyone else sees a man in a costume randomly jumping and shooting invisible fireballs at imaginary enemies. No one seems perturbed by this though, because it's New York.

Singh's prototype obviously doesn't quite turn Central Park into the Mushroom Kingdom as the actual geography of the place doesn't align with the pipes and pits of World 1-1, so the player can simply walk around the comically high obstacles, but it's still a novel piece of fan service. Now imagine if this tech was set to a space designed just for it! The mind reels.

According to a new study by Flurry Analytics, mobile gaming habits are changing, with players having fewer gaming sessions that, however, last longer. And despite playing fewer times a week, players are spending more money. First, some other interesting numbers. The top 5 mobile gaming countries—USA, India, China, Brazil, and Russia—make up between them 50% of all global gaming sessions. Overall, there's a decline in gaming sessions for the second year in a row, with a big drop in arcade and casual games, which in turn was a big factor in the overall game session drop within these last two years. Some other genres have been seeing more gaming sessions though, chief among them card and casino apps, board and strategy games, and racing games.

While we are seeing fewer gaming sessions, those sessions appear to be getting longer, especially in 2016. That indicates higher engagement according to Flurry, and it also shows that developers are fine tuning their mechanics and monetization systems and are succeeding in keeping players around for longer per session. Another interesting—though not very surprising—number is that screen size correlates with gaming session length, with full-size tablets having longer average session length than normal-sized phones.

Flurry's tips for app developers based on these numbers is to intensify their engagement and monetization tactics, especially at peak usage hours on mobile devices (6-9PM), since players appear to be ready to extend their gaming sessions even more, although it might be harder for new apps to draw players away from their favorite games. Television networks have been gaining interest in esports for the past couple of years, and today NBC Sports became the latest network to jump on the trend. It announced today that it'll broadcast a Rocket League tournament, marking the first time that Rocket League has been televised.

In a press release today, developer Psyonix detailed its new partnership with the NBC Sports Group. The network will broadcast a two vs. two tournament with a $100,000 prize pool this summer. The tournament will begin with regional online qualifying matches organized through the Faceit esports platform, then later rounds will be aired on the NBC Sports App.

The Grand Finals, which take place from August 26-27, will be broadcast on NBCSN, the network's TV channel, in the United States, and the Syfy channel in the UK, Germany, Australia, and Latin America.

According to Rob Simmelkjaer, senior vice president of NBC Sports Ventures, the network decided to make Rocket League its first foray into esports because it believed that the game is already close enough to sports to make it easy and entertaining for NBC Sports' current audience.

"We looked at lots of different games in lots of different genres," he told Mashable. "We ultimately landed on Rocket League for a number of reasons. Number one, it's growing at a nice clip. We see its audiences are growing."

"Number two, we thought that it had some sports DNA to it, which would be a good fit for us and for our audience--our sports-loving audience," he continued. "It's obviously got this sort of soccer mash-up with with motorsports, which are sports that we cover extensively on NBC Sports Network."

Psyonix's head of esports, Josh Watson, also said that the game's low barrier of entry makes it a good fit for the network. "Rocket League is an easy-to-understand game, which makes it the perfect introduction to esports for fans of all backgrounds and ages," he stated in a press release.

Other esports that have been or will be broadcast on TV include Heroes of the Storm on ESPN 2 and Injustice 2 on TBS.

Rocket League is currently available for PS4, Xbox One, and PC, and soon it'll launch on Nintendo Switch, as well. You can see its Switch announcement trailer at the top of this article. The Switch, Xbox One, and PC versions will have cross-play compatibility, but the PS4 is currently left out. It will be released on Switch this holiday season.

Sega has released five of its classic games as free mobile ports on iOS and Android. These include: Sonic The Hedgehog, Phantasy Star 2, Comix Zone, Kid Chameleon, and Altered Beast.

This new line-up is part of what the publisher calls Sega Forever, a new initiative to get its best retro games available for a mobile audience. More titles will be added each month.

All games are completely free with ads, though these can be disabled should one spend a one-time payment of £1.99.

Miyamoto's plucking more Pikmin out back as we speak

Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac creator Edmund McMillen has indicated his next game, The Legend of Bum-Bo, will be released for the Nintendo Switch. McMillen was fielding questions on Twitter and when asked by a follower whether the game would get a Switch release he said, "I think so yeah."

The Legend of Bum-Bo was announced in March 2016, but little has been seen of it since. McMillen is working on it alongside collaborators James Id and Ridiculon, and the game is described as a "turn-based puzzle RPG type thingy that's randomly generated."

The Legend of Bum-Bo's stylised logo hints at a connection to The Binding of Isaac and McMillen also teased the link when posting about it on the Isaac blog.

"But why is this on the Isaac blog?!," he asked. "What does this have to do with Isaac? When Isaac!? Isaac? Isaac! Why!? Well I'm sure those questions will be answered in the coming months once we tease a bit more."

The End Is Nigh, an adventure platformer from McMillen, is also set for release on the Nintendo Switch. Although the Steam version launches on on July 12, the Switch release is set for an as of yet undisclosed date in the future.

The End is Nigh is set after the "end of the world." Players control Ash, one of the few "things" to survive the apparent apocalypse. You must guide Ash through nightmarish levels filled with "decaying" mutant creatures, collecting video game cartridges and tumors along the way.

Going old-school

Cliff Bleszinski, unter dessen Leitung Lawbreakers bei Boss Key Productions entsteht, hat gegenüber IGN erklärt, warum der Multiplayer-Shooter auf PC und PlayStation 4 erscheint, aber nicht für Xbox One: "Meine erste Sorge gilt meinen Angestellten. Ich habe 65 Mitarbeiter, viele von ihnen haben Familie, und ich muss dafür sorgen, dass das Licht an bleibt. Als wir uns der Tatsache gegenübersahen, das Spiel zum Start nur auf einer Konsole veröffentlichen zu können, hatte PlayStation diese riesige Anzahl potentieller Nutzer."

Eine spätere Umsetzung für die Microsoft-Konsole sei damit allerdings nicht ausgeschlossen, denn Bleszinski fährt fort: "Das bedeutet nicht, dass wir später nicht vielleicht eine Xbox-Version anbeiten [...]. Ich würde es nicht ausschließen."

Lawbreakers erscheint am 8. August auf PC und PS4. Zuvor wird es weitere Betatests geben. Wer daran teilnehmen möchte, kann sich auf der offiziellen Webseite darum bewerben.

Sega is bringing a catalog of its classic games to mobile devices via a new service called Sega Forever. The service will encompass titles from every era of Sega consoles, including Master System, Genesis, Game Gear, Sega Saturn, and Dreamcast.

Each game available through Sega Forever will be free to download and features in-game ads. Like the recent mobile release of Crazy Taxi, however, players have the option to remove the ads via a $2 in-app purchase per game. Every title will also support new features such as leaderboards, cloud saves, offline play, and controller support.

The first batch of Sega Forever titles goes live worldwide tomorrow, June 22, and consists of the following five Genesis classics:

• Sonic the Hedgehog
• Altered Beast
• Comix Zone
• Kid Chameleon
• Phantasy Star II

The service will be updated with additional titles every two weeks, according to a press release. Each Sega Forever game will be available to download individually on Android and iOS devices from the Google Play and App stores.

A new Nintendo Switch update is now available, bringing with it a range of new features as well as overall performance improvements. Crucially, the update addresses an issue with certain TVs that caused HDMI inputs to change when the Switch was docked in sleep mode.

Other features introduced as part of the update include the ability to add friends from your Nintendo 3DS and Wii U friends list, locate nearby paired controllers by making them vibrate, and use a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller through a wired connection. Auf der E3 2017 demonstrierte Crytek eine deutlich überarbeitete Version von Hunt: Showdown (ehemals Hunt: Horrors of the Gilded Age). In dem Monsterjagdspiel mit PvP-Fokus (Spieler-gegen-Spieler) treten vier Teams mit jeweils zwei Spielern gegeneinander an. Darüber hinaus kämpfen alle Spieler gegen computergesteuerte Monster und Bossgegner. Es ist also ein PvPvE-Modus.

Im folgenden Spielszenen-Video zeigen Magnus Larbrant (Creative Director) und Chris Auty (Level Design Director) die Jagd auf eine monströse Spinne in einem Sumpf in Louisiana, wobei die vier Teams jeweils um die Beute, also die Spinne, konkurrieren. Generell sollen die Matches zwischen 20 und 40 Minuten dauern, schätzen die Entwickler. Hunt: Showdown ist derzeit für PC in Entwicklung.

Nintendo's new Switch console has been in short supply since it launched this past March, but US residents may have a chance to pick one up from a select GameStop store in the next week.

The video game retailer has announced it is receiving more Switch consoles "at select stores across the country." Unfortunately, there isn't a particular day prospective Switch owners can come in to pick up a console; according to a representative from the company, units "will arrive at different times throughout the week due to shipping" and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

The representative also confirmed that standalone Switch consoles will only be sold in-store. GameStop's website will offer the system exclusively in bundle form. One such bundle includes a copy of the recently released Arms along with a Joy-Con charging dock and other Switch accessories for $463.

Nintendo showcased several upcoming Switch titles during its E3 2017 presentation. In addition to showing off more footage of Super Mario Odyssey (which we got to try at the expo), the company announced a release window for the open-world RPG Xenoblade Chronicles 2, released a new trailer for the hack-and-slash Fire Emblem spinoff Fire Emblem Warriors, and announced new Kirby, Yoshi, and Metroid Prime titles for the console.
