Like most Mario video game characters, Thwomps are bad guys, yet are still somehow cute. These spiked cinder blocks have personality. Sure, they are trying to pulverize you, but you still have to love them.

If you want a nice solid concrete version, (because what else would you make a Thwomp out of?) Instructables user mactothefuture can show you how. He made this replica of the Thwomp from Super Mario Bros. and it looks awesome.

He used a mold box and cast the block from concrete. Now it is ready to smash anything the goes under it. Working with concrete is tricky, but I bet you can do it with some practice. All of the details are up on Instructables if you want to give it a try.

Wir machen den Test!

Der Service klingt bisher nicht schlecht, jedoch ziemlich langwierig und teuer. Wir wollten es genau wissen und haben mit Borderlinx testweise eine Computermaus für 17,99$ (13,80€) bei Amazon.com bestellt:

Als Gewicht schätzen wir vorsichtshalber 0,5 kg, die Maße legen wir auf 15 x 15 x 20 cm fest (falls die Maus großzügiger verpackt sein sollte als nötig, kann sie von Borderlinx kostenlos in ein kleineres und damit günstigeres Päckchen umverpackt werden):

Der zu zahlende Gesamtbetrag enthält alle Steuern, Zoll- und Versandkosten. Wenn man diesen nun mit dem Warenwert addiert, kommt der letztlich zu zahlende Gesamtbetrag für die Maus heraus: 17.99$ + 39.90$ = 57.89$ (43,10€). Dieser Wert kann, wie gesagt, noch abweichen, je nachdem wie groß und schwer das Paket letztlich ist.

Wir haben am Donnerstag, den 17.07., bestellt und bekommen bereits einen Tag danach von Borderlinx eine Bestätigung per Mail, dass das Päckchen angekommen ist. Über unser Borderlinx-Konto geben wir den Versand nach Deutschland frei, allerdings sind die Gesamtkosten leider höher als zuvor berechnet:

Statt 39.90$ (29,60€) sind es nun doch 45.12$ (33,70€). Liegt wohl daran, dass das Paket mit 3 x 12 x 10 inches (ca. 7,6 x 30,5 x 25,4 cm) ein bisschen größer ist als geschätzt.

Nur 2 Tage (!) später, am Mittwoch den 23.07., kommt unsere Maus im Büro in Berlin an. Das ging also superfix, wurde auch per Express verschickt, obwohl wir Standardversand angegeben haben:

Letztlich zahlen wir insgesamt: 17.99$ für die Maus an Amazon.com + 45.12$ an Borderlinx = 63.11$ (46,81€) (Preisvergleich, wenn wir die Maus in Deutschland gekauft hätten: 13€

Fazit

Was die Schnelligekeit angeht, schneidet Borderlinx sehr gut ab: In nur einer Woche hat es unsere Maus – ab dem Zeitpunkt der Bestellung bei Amazon.com bis zur Lieferung – aus den USA nach Berlin geschafft. Allerdings war das Ganze sehr teuer und die Kosten waren im Vorfeld schwer kalkulierbar. Borderlinx lohnt sich wirklich nur, wenn gewisse Produkte in Deutschland nicht erhältlich oder in den USA bzw. UK sehr viel günstiger sind.

The massive NERF gun is called the N-Strike Elite Rhino-Fire blaster and it has dual barrels. Each of the barrels has its own ammo drum that holds 50 darts. Power for the automated firing mechanism comes from six D-cell batteries.

This is a video of Michael Jackson's hologram performing 'Slave To The Rhythm' at yesterday's 2014 Billboard Music Awards. He looked pretty lifelike. So lifelike I'm not convinced it wasn't actually Michael Jackson. Maybe he finally got bored of pretending to be dead and just wanted to perform again. I can respect that. I just wish Biggie would do the same. Keep going for the performance.

Alain Wildgen converts scenes from old video games to 3D artworks by hand. For each game, Alain looks for a good screenshot online and prints that on paper. He then adds depth to the scene by cutting the print into several pieces and using foam rubber to raise some of the pieces above the others.

Imagine if we could convert all the roadways in America into a giant solar panel that provides enough energy for every household in the country. Just imagine. No more nuclear plants. No more coal plants. Greenhouse gas reductions of 75%. Sounds cool, right? Well, the good folks at Solar Roadways have already done that, and they’re trying to get the product adopted by the relevant authorities.

Solar Roadways is a modular paving system of solar panels that can withstand the heaviest of trucks (250,000 pounds). These Solar Road Panels can be installed on roads, parking lots, driveways, sidewalks, bike paths, playgrounds… literally any surface under the sun. A nationwide system could produce more clean renewable energy than a country uses as a whole (http://solarroadways.com/numbers.shtml).

They have many other features as well, including: heating elements to stay snow/ice free, LEDs to make road lines and signage, and attached Cable Corridor to store and treat stormwater and provide a “home” for power and data cables. EVs will be able to charge with energy from the sun (instead of fossil fuels) from parking lots and driveways and after a roadway system is in place, mutual induction technology will allow for charging while driving.

The possibilities this system affords are mind blowing, and too varied to all list here. But you should know this is no oddball backyard project. Solar Roadways have been extensively tested, with funding from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration. It’s a real product, and if the stars align and politicians can get their heads removed from their behinds, maybe, just maybe this can become a thing.

Apple has issued a warning to European iPhone users telling them that the USB adapter they are using may pose a safety risk. Apple says that affected USB adapters were sold with the iPhone 3GS, 4, and 4S smartphones from October 2009 until September 2012.

All of the affected adapters have model A1300 on them. The adapters are being redesigned and all new adapters have model A1400 on them and the CE symbol is outlined in gray. Apple is replacing the adapters for users at no cost.

Apple says that these affected adapters have the potential to overheat and “pose a safety risk.” What Apple means is that they might catch fire. The replacement program is underway now. Users who want to replace their adapters can request a replacement here.

Kelsey Kronmiller and her boyfriend recently made this custom Super Mario Bros. level themed fish tank, and it’s totally awesome. They were inspired by this one. Surprisingly neither one is based on the underwater level – which is too bad. Fish love warp pipes.

Most of it the landscape is made using LEGO bricks. Any fish would love to swim around in this. Maybe save a fish Princess. Fight a fat fish named Flounder. Come to think of it, this would just be too much work for a fish. Fish just like to lazily swim around for like five days and then float to the top, laying on their side.

Of course, maybe that’s just me. Not great with fish or plants.
