RAPTOR and RAPTOR Basic for Jaguar

Atari Jaguar developers Reboot have released two new packages designed to aid Jaguar development, RAPTOR and RAPTOR Basic. RAPTOR is a high performance RISC-based API designed to leverage the performance of the Jaguar's custom RISC chips in an easy and flexible manner, allowing the software developer to spend more time following their vision instead of wrestling with the hardware. Several examples are included, taking the user from a simple 'Hello World' to a complete game. RAPTOR Basic is a merging of RAPTOR into a BASIC language, specifically designed to lower the bar of entry to Jaguar programming in a similar way to what batari Basic and 7800basic have done for the 2600 and 7800 respectively. RAPTOR Basic is based on EhBASIC 68k. Reboot intends to continually update both RAPTOR and RAPTOR Basic with new features over time. You can discuss these new Jaguar tools with Reboot and other AtariAge members in our new RAPTOR API and RAPTOR Basic forums, where you can also find links to the latest versions.

The Concept Art For This Cancelled Mario Game Is Hilariously Bad

by Jon Gordon

Ever wondered what Mario would look like in a unitard? Us neither, but at least a few people at Nintendo were keen to find out if the concept art for a cancelled Super Mario Spikers game is to be believed.

As posted recently by PDawgy on Reddit and then found on various other sites by other posters, Super Mario Spikers, alternatively known as Mario Volleyball, was planned as a Wii title in the same vein as Super Mario Strikers and developed by the same team, Next Level Games.

Mario_wrestling_01-copy

According to Unseen64, Next Level was allowed to pursue the project on its own as a sort of “reward” for the good work and reception to its football titles. As one former artist told Unseen64; “It was a wrestling/volleyball hybrid with a game show slant. It was never released and was financed as more of a reward to Next Level for doing such a great job on MSC”

The project was cancelled sometime in 2007 after it was turned down by Nintendo. But the concept art lives on for us to enjoy now. The only question is how did it manage to get this far?

Father Makes Son Play Through Video Game History, Chronologically

For the last ten years, Andy Baio has been performing an experiment on his son. It is equal parts cruel and fascinating. Rather than let him play whatever video game he wanted, Baio made his boy work his way to modernity by playing through the history of video games chronologically. Starting with 1979's Galaxian.

'Terminator Genisys' Trailer: The Old Movies Again, But Now Also Completely Different

terminator-genisys-trailer.jpg
When news arose that another Terminator was being developed, early on there was a lot of confusion over whether it was being conceived as a sequel or a reboot. With this first trailer for the film, it's now clear where that confusion was coming from--even if that's the only aspect that's exactly clear.

Atari Jaguar Europe Festival 2014

by pixelkitsch

Westworld-Series goes big time…

by René

9653986011_b930ecd466_o

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the show’s androids — played by castmembers including James Marsden, Evan Rachel Wood and Thandie Newton — can be killed off and return with completely different personas, allowing actors to play many characters. That creative device, one top talent agent said, helped HBO attract a premier cast (which also includes Ed Harris, Miranda Otto and Jeffrey Wright). And unlike the actors on such anthology series as FX’s American Horror Story and HBO’s own True Detective, which reboot themselves every season, the cast of Westworld is signing multiyear deals.

A New Sonic Game Has Been Uncovered… From 1996

by Dom Peppiatt

Sonic X-Treme final build leaked

After Team Sonic moved onto the NiGHTS series and left Sonic in the hands of an American developer, that’s when many gamers consider Sonic to have died. It was the end of the traditional side-scrolling adventures of the spiky blue mascot and the start of his eventual decline into ridicule.

But it could have been different – his fate could have been saved by a Sega Saturn release that would have featured 3D models in an isometric world: Sonic just might have been able to keep up to speed with Super Mario 64 or Crash Bandicoot on the PS1.

Thanks to Krejiooc over at NeoGAF, full demos and builds of the cancelled Sonic X-Treme (not to be confused with Sonic Extreme) are beginning to leak, documenting the tortured development process that plagued the game until its eventual death. Below is a quick video showing how the NiGHTS engine would have been used to create the boss battles:

Click here to view the embedded video.

The full story in the thread is definitely worth a read: it explains how much engine-sourcing issues stumbled the game’s development, and is a fascinating window into the differences in Japanese and Western development methods.

Cute Jawa Kids Halloween Costumes: Jawadorable

by Conner Flynn

These kids wanted to be Jawas for Halloween this year so their parents agreed. Don’t they make the cutest Jawas this side of Tatooine?

jawa costumes 620x620magnify

Although I’m not sure what they expect to find at each house. Candy or droids? Candied droids would be best I would think. As cute as they are in the daytime, they’d pretty creepy in the dark on Halloween night. I would freak out if I saw them. Because you know they’re just there to scope out your place and steal your droids. Or maybe sell you one with a bad motivator.

They look adorable though, don’t they? Shut up and take my candy! Utinni!
