Retrospective: Handheld & Bootleg 'Contra III - The Alien Wars' Ports

by no-reply@retrocollect.com (Craig)

Contra-III-RetrospectiveContra III is wonderful. It's a game that sets a blistering pace from the moment you press start, never missing a beat in it’s 30 minute runtime. It constantly introduces new ideas to launch you forward, quite literally by the end of the fourth stage. In the first level alone you have destructible cars, a rideable tank, feral dogs and an air raid turning the level into an inferno, none of which are seen again in the game. Each level brings its own mood and locale, but this goes beyond simple palate changes. From the emphasis on climbing in level 3, to the forced scrolling by way of bikes and missiles in level 4, each stage feels fresh and provides a new challenge to contend with. Visually it sets the tone perfectly taking us through futuristic cityscapes at war before arriving at the oppressive Alien core, with more than a handful of geiger-esque monstrosities to deal with on the way. Of course much of this was ripped wholesale from popular sci-fi movies of the era, mainly Alien and Terminator, but when it’s executed this well, does anyone really mind? The soundtrack too has shifted from the relatively straight forward melodic hummable tunes of the NES Contra. Instead we have an ambitious, multilayered, sometimes atonal score which focuses more on setting the mood than whether you can tap your foot to it.

Check Out The Epic Fallout 4 Vinyl Soundtrack

by Nick Thorpe

Bethesda has gone all out for one of the most elaborate soundtrack releases we’ve seen so far. Fallout 4’s deluxe vinyl soundtrack is a massive affair, featuring over three and a half hours of music from the game’s composer Inon Zur.

To house all of that, the six blue LPs (each bearing some Vault Boy illustrations) will come in three fully illustrated gatefold jackets. As you’d expect it’s a limited edition, with 3,000 copies going into production to be sold exclusively through the Bethesda store.

If you’re willing to fork out the $125 needed to own this set, it’s available to pre-order now for a July 1st release.

The English Version of Kairosoft's 'Station Manager' Has Hit The App Store

by Shaun Musgrave

Kairosoft, the extremely prolific developer of simulation games like Game Dev Story [$0.99], is almost as unpredictable with its release schedules as it is predictable with its game designs. One of its recent trends is releasing the Japanese versions of its games at the same time worldwide, something that obviously doesn't help much if you can't read the language. While they used to just update the Japanese app with added languages, the developer has recently taken to releasing separate international versions after a period of time has passed. The latest game to get that treatment is Station Manager [$5.99], a train station simulator.

stationmanager

A few months ago, Kairosoft dropped a pair of Japanese language-only simulation games on the App Store, of which Station Manager was one. At the time, I translated its title as Pocket City Railway, but it looks like Kairosoft went with something a little more straightforward. It's an appropriate title, though, since you'll mainly be designing and operating the stations that the trains stop at. The game seems to be using a new engine, and it's certainly one of Kairosoft's spiffier titles in terms of presentation. The gameplay, however, is pretty familiar for anyone who has played a few of the developer's other titles. I wrote up some impressions of the Japanese version that you can check out if you want a few more details.

As usual for a Kairosoft game, if the concept holds any appeal to you, it's a safe bet you'll enjoy Station Manager. This developer is nothing if not consistent, and it can get away with that simply because it's got the core mechanics of simulation games down pat. By the same token, if you've long since exhausted yourself on this particular style of game from Kairosoft, you likely won't find anything to rekindle your joy here.

'Maniac Mansion' Creators' Upcoming Adventure 'Thimbleweed Park' Gets a Creepy New Trailer

by Jared Nelson

Back in November of 2014, two of the creators behind classic point-and-click adventure Maniac Mansion Kickstarted a new adventure game project called Thimbleweed Park. It's been in development for quite a while and we got our first glimpse of the game in action when a teaser trailer was released back in early March. Today another new trailer has been released, also of the teaser variety, and the tone of it is unsettling to say the least.

In Thimbleweed Park you'll play as one of a variety of characters as an investigation commences when a body is found in the river just outside of town. Of course, every sign points to there being much more to the story here than a simple dead body investigation, and as this newest trailer shows there's some creepy stuff happening in this sleepy little town. Expect more info on Thimbleweed Park, most likely at E3 next week, ahead of its planned launch sometime in early 2017.

'Retro City Rampage DX' Is On Sale For Its Lowest Price Yet

by Shaun Musgrave

Vblank Entertainment's Retro City Rampage DX [$4.99] is a charming ode to 1980s pop culture. What started as an 8-bit demake of Grand Theft Auto eventually mutated into a tribute to NES games, movies, TV shows, and more. While its reach occasionally extends beyond its grasp in some of its parodies, it certainly does an excellent job at its original purpose, which was to create a retro-flavored take on Rockstar's seminal action series. While the controls take a little adjusting to, the mobile version of the game that arrived in March is a fine port that includes all of the things that made the game a hit elsewhere. It received our Game of the Week award and managed to coax four whole stars out of the villainous Carter Dotson in his review. That's a half-star more than he gave your favorite game.

rcrdx1

That said, I know some of you haven't bought it, friends. Maybe you were busy with some other great games. Maybe you already owned it on one of the 632 other platforms it's been released on. Maybe you just weren't sure if there was room in your heart for a Grand Theft Auto parody when there are five actual Grand Theft Auto games to play on iOS. I can't pretend to know what you're thinking. That's not only rude, but also against the law, thank you very much, Professor X. Whatever your reasons, your wait has paid off. Retro City Rampage DX has gone on sale for a limited time for just $2.99, down from its regular price of $4.99.

rcrdx2

There's no word on how long this sale is going to last, so as usual, if you want it, you should get it while the getting is good. I will say that you'll get a lot of game for your $2.99, and even if some of it doesn't work for you, there's enough variety here that something probably will. Worst case scenario, you can kick back and enjoy the excellent soundtrack while blasting away at tiny pixelated people, a fine pursuit if ever there were one. As always, if the price hasn't caught up yet on our page, worry not. Just click on over to the App Store and you should see the sale price.

New Kairosoft Game 'Skyforce Unite!' Flies Onto the App Store

by Rob Funnell

It isn't a proper release day on the App Store if a Kairosoft game doesn’t drop now and then. Skyforce Unite! [Free] is the newest in their long line of simulation games and appears to be rather left field for Kairosoft’s standard, with the game presenting a bizarre amalgamation of a traditional RPG, a card based fighter, and an airplane collection simulation.

Sky force Unite 1

You can collect numerous different types of planes, from fighter jets to choppers and gunships, with varying stats and traits. You then take them into battle against land based creatures and vehicles with Pokemon-style elemental types such as wind, water, lightning, or earth. Each plane you take along has specific resistances to these types, and so a clever choice of craft is vital to ensure you don’t get shot down on your expeditions and to bring peace to time mysteriously titled ‘Uncivilized Land’.

Skyforce Unite! has already had a launch on PC and Android and has received a relatively warm reception, even with some questions over the restrictions of the Free to Play pricing model. With an extremely detailed wiki page detailing the numerous different customizable elements of the game coupled with the trademark retro charm Kairosoft has mastered over the years, it appears if you can get past the timers and energy requirements this is yet another solid strategy game to add to their extensive catalogue. At the very least, we’re one release closer to potentially getting Game Dev Story 2, which six years later I’m still hoping and praying we see a release for. Maybe one day.

You Should Seriously Play: Welltris (Atari ST)

by stopXwhispering

I’ve been collecting Tetris games for a while now, and I recently stumbled upon this game called Welltris on Atari ST. Since I was quite new to the Atari ST and only had around 4 or 5 games for it I thought why not! So I picked it up from eBay :) I wasn’t quite sure whether or not to include it in my Tetris Collection since it’s not called “Tetris”, and it’s not the typical 2D-type falling blocks that Tetris is all about. Because I don’t want to have to include games like Block Out that is completely 3D and not called Tetris or Panel de Pon which have different shapes and functions than Tetris, you just switch places of blocks of the same color to try and match them and it builds up from below. If I would add these then I could basically add ANY puzzle game out there, like Tsuyoshi Shikari Shinasai which is one of my favorites, that works kind of like Puyo Puyo, but these games are NOT Tetris. They are puzzle games, and they are perhaps INSPIRED by Tetris, but it’s not Tetris.

Welltris however got to have a place in the Tetris Collection for two reasons.
1.  It’s not like Block Out, you just build on one layer, the only difference from regular Tetris is that you can build from 4 different directions of the board instead of just from above.
2. It is actually kind of like a sequel to Tetris, made by the same creator! Alexey Pajitnov! :D Therefore it does deserve a place in the Tetris Collection ^_^

Atari ST - Welltris Atari ST - Welltris back

I was pleasantly surprised when I finally got the game playing, it was the first game I’ve tried out on my Atari 1040ST :) I first had issues using the original Atari screen, because it was monochrome and apparently not able to display the games I attempted to load, once I switched to a regular CRT it worked perfectly though ^_^ I was sure Welltris would be like Block Out though so I was happy to see that it wasn’t. Here when a block falls down you can rotate around the four walls, kind of like in Tempest. Wherever it touches the ground floor it will then start falling continuously in that direction until it hits another block or the opposite wall. So you can build from all four directions and try to fit the blocks into place.

Atari 1040ST with original Atari SM124 screen Atari ST monitor in black and white Atari ST desktop in color

If you place a shape that doesn’t quite make it onto the board, where a piece of it is still hanging onto the wall it came from, then that wall turns red and you won’t be able to move shapes over that wall anymore. You die when all 4 walls are red. Basically it’s like hitting the top of the tower in regular Tetris, but here you have 4 chances. The main board is much smaller though so it’s easy to accidentally misplace a shape. Also when a wall is blocked it increases the difficulty since you can’t place anything from that direction anymore. The red walls do go away after a while though, I don’t know if it’s after a certain amount of blocks have been placed or if you have to delete a few rows first.

Welltris on Atari ST Welltris - Red Walls

There’s also an increase in speed the higher the level you reach. There’s a total of 5 difficulty stages, each stage has a different environment picture to the right and an increase in speed. The last one on stage five is quite funny! It’s a programmer with a beard, with a computer screen containing the same image in the same image in the same image and so forth XD
I wonder if it’s meant to be Alexey??

You can also choose three various difficulty levels. The first one has regular Tetris blocks, and a few that only consists of two squares that are easy to place. The third one has really difficult pieces like stairs and plus-shapes. See examples of the pieces in the Stage 1 picture..

There’s also two various movement modes. One makes the movement of the block go all around 360° with just holding the left or right buttons on the keyboard, the other mode forces you to switch between up and down buttons on the left and right wall and left and right buttons on the upper and lower walls.. this is difficult, I prefer having it go all the way around with the push of just one button..

Welltris - Menu Welltris on Atari ST - Stage 1 on level 3 Welltris on Atari ST - Stage 2 Welltris on Atari ST - Stage 3 Welltris on Atari ST - Stage 4 Welltris on Atari ST - Stage 5

Anyway, here’s a video to give you an idea of what the gameplay looks like ^_^ I’m not sure if this game has been ported on other systems or if any similar games have been made. Please do let me know if you know of something that is like this one (and not BlockOut! ;)).

You should seriously play Welltris if you’re into puzzle games :D

Starbreeze: Erwirbt die Rechte an allen Cinemaware-Klassikern (z.B. Wings, Defender of the Crown)

"The full list of IP's included in the transaction are:

  • The Cinemaware brand
  • Defender of the Crown
  • Wings
  • The King of Chicago
  • Sinbad and the Throne of the Falcon
  • Lords of the Rising Sun
  • Rocket Ranger
  • It Came from the Desert
  • It Came from the Desert II: Antheads
  • SDI
  • TV Sports: Basketball
  • TV Sports: Baseball
  • TV Sports: Boxing
  • TV Sports: Football
  • TV Sports: Hockey

The rights include all brands, websites, existing products and licenses including the Cinemaware label. The Cinemaware library is intended to be one of Starbreeze resource banks for years to come. It will be selectively used in Starbreeze internal development and its external publishing business."

Our First Hands-On With Civilization VI Is A Blast

by Kimberley Wallace

Firaxis finally unveiled Sid Meier's Civilization VI by revealing several savvy changes, from cities spanning multiple tiles to more complex relationships with fellow leaders. To see how everything is coming together, I recently went hands-on with the new entry, completing around 40 turns. Let's just say if you thought the one-more-turn itch was already hard to resist, it's going to be even harder with Civilization VI.

Civilization VI brings all the important decision-making back, but makes the process smoother than before. I notice the improved interface immediately, which makes navigating and setting up turns easier. The game always lets you know which units you haven't moved, if research is available, and a blue outline shows how far each unit can move. I'm more of a builder than a warrior, so my strategy is to do just that and eventually research astrology so I can erect a holy-site district and found a religion.

As the leader of China, I put down my first city and notice one of the new systems immediately. What I do in the world can inspire my people for technological advancements. Since I built my city on the coast, people will naturally go out and establish fishing boats and nets, and I immediately get a boost toward learning sailing. Before I can move on I need to make a production and science decision. I select a scout to help me explore the map, and I pick sailing because my bonus toward it has cut down the time significantly to obtain it (only six turns).

I send men off in two separate directions to discover more of the map and decide to build a monument for my city, which helps me get more culture. Soon enough my city grows; now two tiles around my city are occupied by citizens that can bring things in such as harvests, and it's satisfying already seeing some progress in the matter of a few turns. I spot some whales that I can harvest to make my people happier, but it requires the sailing technology; thankfully, in one more turn my research is complete.

I move my scout a few spots and discover a barbarian camp. If I don't do anything about them, they're going to raid my city, so I need to act sooner rather than later. This puts a damper on my peaceful plans; I need to build up my power to take on these baddies. I build a ranged attacker, and later I'll build a warrior for back up.

I also have plenty of options for my next research now that sailing is complete. I look around my city; pottery can help me bring in the grain, mining helps with the stone, and animal husbandry helps with a deer nearby. The deer is within the border of my city, so I decide on that. I can also always buy tiles to pull them into my city, but for now I work with the deer since it's already there.

Civilization VI has separate tech and civics trees, which were previously combined. "There were always a lot of things in the tech tree like 'chivalry' that weren't really a technology," says lead designer Ed Beach. I complete my first requirement in the civics tree, which is all driven by culture. Some examples of things under this tree are establishing a military tradition, starting a new trade up, or dabbling in mysticism and religion. A scroll bar lets you see you how far you can go with your advancements  through history.

With my first civic complete, I can now put bonuses into my government. I can select either a military or economic bonus. These come in the form of cards that you place in open slots. I choose combat and production bonuses. I'll get more of these cards as I complete more civics, so I can always adapt it to my playing style at the time.

After building up my army more, focusing on a settler to establish a new city, and starting research on foreign trade, I run into Egypt's Cleopatra. All the leaders speak in their correct native language, a nice touch as Cleopatra greets me in Coptic. She invites me to visit her city and I agree.

Civilization VI introduces leader agendas, and Cleopatra's is "Queen of the Nile," which states that she likes powerful militaries and will try to ally with them. Firaxis pulled this detail from her actual life; she aligned herself with powerful men like Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony, seducing them so Egypt wouldn't get attacked. She also has another randomly assigned hidden agenda that I'll need to discover through trade routes or by sending a delegation.

Cleopatra likes me because I've been building up my army to take out that barbarian camp, but if you don't have a powerful military, she won't give you the time of day. Later, when my army loses forces facing the barbarian camp and I explore too close to her border, our relationship declines. She especially gets mad once I meet and stay on friendly terms with Teddy Roosevelt, whom she dislikes. Rumors and gossip show up about leaders throughout the game; this new system gives you more information to react to and plan your decisions around.

After my astrology research is over, I build a holy-site district and construct a bunch of buildings to produce faith, such as a shrine. This eventually lets me found my own religion; I go with Buddhism and generate a great prophet to spread its message. I don't get to see much beyond that, which is a shame because I think Cleopatra is about to become my enemy and I know my decisions with what to do with her are only going to get harder.

I'm already so immersed at crafting my own tale that I can't wait to dive back in. The drama is heightened by your relationships with leaders and all the systems just play off each other so well. Every improvement we've seen from Civilization VI feels for the better so far.

Six TMNT Games Worth Playing And Two You Should Totally Avoid

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise has a long history with gaming. From our earliest memories of avoiding electrified seaweed and cheesing Donatello’s bō during boss fights to our more recent unfortunate journeys through games that accompanied the TV shows and films, these heroes in a half shell have been ever-present within the gaming landscape.

Over the course of the multitude of titles that have released under the TMNT moniker, we’ve seen some truly fantastic titles. Unfortunately, for every awesome TMNT game, there have been multiple mediocre or awful releases. If you’re looking to sink your teeth into the TMNT games on offer, here are the ones you should stick to.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Hyperstone Heist (Genesis)

Hyperstone Heist is often forgotten when it comes to lists of the most beloved games starring the Turtles, thanks in large part to how close to Turtles in Time on SNES its release fell. Not only was it visually similar to Turtles in Time, but it even takes full sections of that game. Still, the gameplay is sound, and Hyperstone Heist served as a strong Turtles in Time alternative for those who only owned a Genesis.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters (SNES)

Tournament Fighters was a strange addition to the TMNT library when it released between 1993 and 1994 across the NES, SNES, and Genesis, but it proved to be a fun fighting game that borrowed some key elements from the Street Fighter franchise. The NES version is markedly worse than either the SNES or Genesis versions, but each version was unique. The SNES edition is widely considered to be the best, however, as it combined better graphics with a stronger and more balanced character roster, as well as better controls thanks to the four face-button layout of the SNES controller.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fall of the Foot Clan (Game Boy)

Taking the Turtles on the go via Nintendo’s first handheld, Fall of the Foot Clan was full of smart level design and brought with it an A-list cast of adversaries. From Bebop and Rocksteady to Krang and Shredder, fighting through the biggest and baddest foes the Turtles know as any of the four brothers is a lot of fun, especially when you consider the technical limitations of the Game Boy the game overcame. Though it hasn’t aged as well as the other games on this list thanks to the platform it’s on, it’s worth a look for players who are truly looking to dig into the best the TMNT game franchise has to offer.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III: The Manhattan Project (NES)

The Manhattan Project brought NES players some of the best two-player co-op to ever appear on the platform. In addition to that, it was a great side-scrolling beat-‘em-up for those who hadn’t yet upgraded to the SNES. With great tie-ins to the film that had just released, The Secret of the Ooze, The Manhattan Project struck a strong balance between great gameplay and fan service.

On the next page, we look at our two favorite Ninja Turtle games, as well as the ones you should avoid at all costs.
