Opinion – Why I Hope The Nintendo NX Rumors Are True

With new consoles – or new iterations of current consoles – on the horizon, the gaming industry is an exciting place right now. Players are anxious for any details about the upcoming technology (Sony’s PlayStation 4 Neo, Microsoft’s Project Scorpio, and Nintendo’s NX), but the companies are keeping frustratingly quiet. People are hungry for information that isn’t being delivered, which is one of the reasons the recent rumors regarding the NX are so captivating. But even better than that is the fact that these rumors, if true, indicate that Nintendo is finally back on the right track.
From the design of the system to the tech powering it, the rumors surrounding the NX have stirred a dormant excitement for Nintendo’s future. I’ve been waiting for Nintendo to abandon its losing competition with Sony and Microsoft and consolidate its strength. Thanks to the Wii U, Nintendo’s current place in the console landscape is occupied by an under-powered, under-supported, and effectively dead system – but the company may finally be able to turn that around.
According to Eurogamer’s report, the NX is a hybrid system that combines the features of handhelds and traditional consoles. As a portable device, it has a touch-screen and two detachable controllers to facilitate multiplayer; at home, it outputs to your TV for a more stationary experience. This is a brilliant (though long-predicted) fusion of Nintendo’s previously segmented handheld and console audiences.

A graphic from the NX's announcement
The Wii U is done for. The 3DS is over five years old already, and has been refreshed several times. It makes perfect sense for Nintendo to unify its business into a single platform that serves multiple purposes. The market for dedicated handheld gaming devices is disappearing; tablets and phones occupy that space now – or at least enough of it to discourage such a project. Not only would a single platform be smart in terms of avoiding risk, but it would also give Nintendo something to offer that its competitors can’t: the ability to seamlessly transition to and from gaming on-the-go.
I love my Vita. I know this seems like a bad example, but hear me out. Vita-exclusive games aren’t the major draw of that system for me; I like the way it allows me to play classic RPGs, and I like how it interacts with my PS4. The cross-buy, cross-save, and remote-play options allow you to play games on your Vita and retain that progress when you return to PS4. Sometimes these features are unreliable or convoluted, but on the whole, they provide a cool and convenient way to centralize your gaming. The problem? Enjoying this vision of the future on your PS4 requires the purchase of a separate handheld console without many other features to recommend it. If Nintendo can iron out the technical kinks and eliminate the extra investment, more people will experience and appreciate this evolution in how (and where) we interact with our games.
Another thing I like is the versatility of the alleged design. With the Wii U, people kept talking about the “potential of the GamePad,” but that phrase never materialized into any actual advances that led to developers – Nintendo included – consistently making games that used the technology well. Yes, some games found fun ways to implement the GamePad, but they were exceptions in a sea of gimmicks. Part of that might be due to the strangeness of the device and the questions it left: How do you use two screens? Why is that better? Does the gyroscope improve the experiences? The answers to these questions varied too much to establish a firm foundation. According to this patent, the NX unit is a touchscreen (like an iPad). The more recent rumors point to detachable segments that function like a traditional game pad when affixed, and as different controllers when removed (with the touchscreen functioning as a shared screen for two players holding the detached controllers). Though the exact size is still unclear, that’s all familiar enough to be immediately understandable. Additional features like dual screens and gyroscopes may be announced later, but on a basic level, people can understand how this system might work and the kinds of games it could provide.

One rumor has to do with the NX using the Tegra X1 chip, which would make it underpowered compared to the technology inside the PS4 and Xbox One (and their upcoming iterations). Being a weaker system certainly isn’t great for public perception, but it might be better in the long run. In generations where Nintendo has tried standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Sony and Microsoft with ports of the same games, it usually didn’t compare favorably. However, if Nintendo can establish that the NX is on a different battlefield – as it did with the Wii and 3DS – then maybe it can stop inviting comparisons to other consoles (especially if it also is able to play Nintendo’s mobile games, too).
This may also help with Nintendo’s recurring problem with third-party studios. If the tech is more accessible and less demanding than PS4 and Xbox One, then maybe creating games for it will be less expensive and more attractive to external partners. Of course, this is just one possible scenario. Much depends on the exact specs and how Nintendo positions the product.
The only part of the rumors I don’t like is the lack of backwards compatibility. Maybe that just means that Wii U games won’t work because the system uses cartridges instead of discs. As I already mentioned, having access to a vast back-catalogue is something I love about my Vita. I’m holding out hope that Nintendo will make old games (including Wii U) available for download – and find a way to avoid making people re-buy them again. After all, how many times can Nintendo re-release old games and expect people to keep purchasing them on various different platforms?
Ultimately, everything comes back to the games. The hardware can be great and the features can be innovative, but no one will care if the games aren’t fun to play. That remains the most critical unknown with the NX right now; the only major title it has is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and that isn’t exactly a vision of the future since it’s also coming to Wii U. I can’t wait to see how Nintendo paves a path to the future, and I’m hoping the company uses this opportunity to grab the best parts from two facets of its business while surprising us along the way.

Nintendo Loses $232M in Q1, Wii U Sales Drop to 220K, 3DS Sells 940K
Nintendo had a weak start to its current fiscal year. Revenue fell 31 percent ¥61.7 billion ($585 million) during the quarter ending June 30, 2016. The gaming giant reported a loss of ¥24.5 billion ($232 million), down from a profit ¥8.3 billion ($78.7 million). That is the largest quarter one loss since 2011.
Revenue from hardware nearly fell by half from ¥44.6 billion to ¥25.1 billion ($238 million).

Wii U sales fell from 470,000 units a year ago to just 220,000. Nintendo 3DS sales remained more stable selling 940,000 units, down from 1.01 million units.
Software sales were up for both platforms. 8.5 million games were sold for the Nintendo 3DS, up from 7.9 million games sold. Games sold on the Wii U increased from 4.6 million to 4.7 million. However, software revenue declined from ¥44.4 billion to ¥34.9 billion ($331 million).
Smart devices and IP related income division saw an increase due to Miitomo. Revenue increased from ¥932 million a year ago to ¥1.6 billion ($15 million).

Looking ahead, quarter two sales are expected to be much higher due to the huge success of Pokémon Go. For the full fiscal year Nintendo expects to earn ¥500 billion ($4.7 billion) in revenue. That is only a one percent increase year-over-year.

Heroes of Might and Magic 5 [PC – Alpha / Beta]
Heroes of Might and Magic 5 is a turn-based strategy game developed by Nival Interactive and published by Ubisoft in May 2006, as a reboot of the series. As we can read on Wikipedia Ubisoft acquired the rights to Might and Magic as far back as 2003, when 3DO filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. At the time New World Computing were already working on a new 2D Heroes of Might and Magic for 3DO, but when Ubisoft bought the franchise they ditched NWC’s versions to start a new, fully 3D game. In 3 years the new version of HoMM5 changed a lot and thanks to a leaked alpha version of the game we can see many of these “beta differences”:
– the interface is completely different in nearly every respect with a lot of prototype stuff
– hero portraits are completely different (Isabel is a photoshop of Kate Beckinsale)
– many creatures have different textures
– the priest/inquisitor has a different model, which was replaced when Games Workshop confronted Ubisoft for plagiarism
– many structures have different models and textures
– different sense of scale in the adventure map, much closer to Heroes 3 (in retail version everything is bigger and more “epic” than practical)
– battlefields of varied size (some battlefields are smaller than the one size in retail)
– the town screen is very different, a static 3D shot similar to previous games (in retail it’s an elaborate flyover)
– only one scenario/map, and the map doesn’t exist in the retail game
– only one faction (Haven)
– there is no world of Ashan (Ubisoft’s fictional world from the retail game), it’s set in Axeoth (the world of Heroes 4)
– different and reshuffled/repurposed music
Thanks to Erwin for the contribution!

Report: NX is a Handheld with Detachable Controllers, Uses Cartridges
Nintendo's upcoming console, the NX, will be a handheld with detachable controllers, according to multiple sources that spoke with Eurogamer.
The NX will be a powerful handheld console with its own built-in display. On either side are two controller sections that can be attached or detached.

The NX will also be able to hook up to your TV, so you can game on the big screen. A dock station will be used to connect the NX to your TV.
Nintendo has also decided to use game cartridges as the physical media for the NX, according to the sources. Nintendo is aiming to use 32GB cartridges, which would not be large enough to fit some modern games.
Digital downloads will also be available. Nintendo originally considered using digital downloads only and no physical media, but decided against it.

One source claims the hardware is radically different from the Wii and the NX would not support backwards compatibility. Another source claims it will run on a new OS from Nintendo.
The NX will use Nvidia's mobile processor Tegra. Nintendo is not aiming to achieve graphical parity with its rivals, Microsoft and Sony. Nintendo is working to squeeze all of the technology in a handheld.
Another source stated Nintendo recently moved a gear within the planning of the NX ahead of the expected September unveiling. Nintendo is planning on making the marketing message simple after the confusing Wii U launch.

Die SteamWorld Collection enthält obendrein The Outsider, ein Add-on zu Steam World Heist.

Fallout 4: Fünfte Erweiterung "Vault-Tec Workshop" veröffentlicht; erstes Workshop-Add-on mit speziellen Quests
Super Nintendo now has a wireless controller adapter

Earlier this year retro peripheral companies Analogue and 8Bitdo joined forces to create a wireless receiver for the original NES, allowing players to enjoy their classic games on native hardware without those clunky cords getting in the way.
Now the peripheral makers have offered the same treatment to the SNES. This Retro Receiver uses a bluetooth connection, offering wireless controller support for the Super Nintendo and Super Famicom.
8Bitdo makes a wireless SNES Gamepad, but you can also pair more modern hardware with the classic console as well, should you wish. The Retro Receiver is compatible with DualShock 3 and 4s, the Wiimote, a Wii U Pro Controller, and all 8Bitdo controllers and arcade sticks.

Replay – The Philips CD-i’s "Best" And Worst Games

The Philips CD-i is a strange side-story in the history of video games. It was born from a fruitless relationship with Nintendo to add a CD drive to the Super Nintendo and had many innovations, including some limited internet connectivity and the option to watch movies on a disc well before the DVD player was a thing. It also considered a failure.
This week on Replay, Andrew Reiner, Jeff Cork, Javy Gwaltney, and me take a look back at the bizarre system, running through a handful of games that include guest stars like Hulk Hogan, a post-apocalyptic human versus anthropomorphic mutant animal beat 'em up, a Rear Window simulator, and more than one abstract science-fiction adventure. It's a strange trip down a rabbit hole of a console that few have memories for and there are some gems, to be sure.
Arguably the Philips CD-i's biggest claim to fame, is that it hosted four games with Nintendo's characters thanks to loopholes present in the relationship mentioned above. We don't play those games in this episode, but we did a previous episode. For our Replay of Hotel Mario and two of the Zelda games that released on Philips CD-i, head here. For a similar round-up of games from another forgotten console, head here for our Replay covering the TurboGrafx-16.

According to Data, 'Pokemon Go' Has Peaked in the US Market
Cranky internet commenters have been calling it since about two hours after Pokemon Go [Free] hit the App Store, but according to survey company and analytics firm SurveyMonkey, Pokemon Go peaked on July 14th. They're figuring that based on the number of people playing Pokemon Go every day, the number of times the game is being downloaded, as well as the amount of people searching Google for Pokemon Go related things. Now, these sorts of things come with significant caveats as the game just launched in Japan, and all it'd take to cause players to come surging back into Pokemon Go is a captivating update or two. But, the writing is on the wall, that Pokemon Go-mania is beginning to fade in the US market.

The momentum Pokemon Go has is unmistakable, the game has broken App Store records and has more people playing it in a single week than other incredibly successful games from free to play giants have after slow-rolling for months (or even years). But, as SurveyMonkey points out, this is not the end for Pokemon Go:
And there’s still a long way to go. As we’ve seen from other games there’s still every chance that the game attracts millions of users (and makes millions of dollars) for months, and even years to come. Plus, the game is not yet available in all countries of the world, with some major countries yet to enter into the hype cycle.
So, we'll see what happens. What I'm more curious of, is what this means for the future of the Pokemon franchise as a whole. Looking at the sales of previous Pokemon games, Pokemon Go has potential to be both the most popular and the most profitable game in the entire franchise. Once you've hit "worldwide cultural phenomenon" status with your mobile game, how do you go back to diddling around on the 3DS?

The Most Bizzare Pokémon Go Stories We've Heard Thus Far

There's no doubt about it: Pokémon Go has become a cultural phenomenon, and it's rapidly engrossing players worldwide. Because of its immense popularity and its ability to mesh into real life on such a wide scope, several surreal news stories have popped up, from armed robbers luring unsuspecting players to a PokéStop to a woman finding a dead body whilst playing. Here are the craziest stories surrounding Pokémon Go that have caught our attention so far.

Woman Gets Stuck In Tree While Searching For Pokémon In Cemetery
A woman from New Jersey was reportedly playing Pokémon Go in a cemetery, and somehow ended up stuck in a tree there. Unable to get back down, she had to phone 911 to come and rescue her. Let's just hope she caught whatever Pokémon was hiding up there. Totally worth it, right?
Two Guys Fall Off A Cliff While Playing
Pokémon Go can be incredibly engrossing, especially for two guys from Encinitas, California. The two were so distracted while playing the game that they fell off a cliff of between 75 to 100 feet. Both of them received injuries from their rough falls.

Editor Brian Shea Falls Down A Hill In Attempt To Catch Magikarp
The two guys above aren't alone in their misfortune. Our editor Brian Shea took a tumble when he was out looking for Pokémon as well. Unbeknownst to him, he was heading for a hill but his eyes were glued to his phone screen. As he attempted to capture a Magikarp (and, according to him he succeeded), he took a hard fall downward.
Man Mistakes Teens For Burglars And Shoots At Them
A man from Florida was awakened in his home following a large noise, and grabbed his handgun to go outside and investigate. He found a couple of teenagers sitting in a car outside his house in the middle of the night, and suspected they were scoping out the area to find a home to rob. He approached the front of the vehicle and pointed his handgun at them, demanding that they don't move a muscle. The two sped off in response, and he shot at the car as they did so. Luckily, no one was injured.
Teens Get Stuck 100 Feet Underground In Caves
A group of teenagers made the dubious decision to enter some mines in search of Pokémon in Wiltshire, England, BBC reports. The underground journey went sour when the four boys realized they were trapped inside. They called for help when one of them "miraculously" found a cell phone signal. If it was this difficult to find a signal, I'd bet they didn't catch a whole lot.

Missouri Armed Robbers Lure Victims To PokéStop
With new technology comes new problems. A group of four men surrounded a secluded PokéStop in Missouri and added a bunch of lures to it, so that it would attract a handful of players in the dead of night. What these unsuspecting victims didn't realize was that they would be ambushed by these men and robbed at gunpoint. Fortunately, the perpetrators have been apprehended and charged since the string of incidents.
Woman Finds A Dead Body Instead Of A Pokémon
Shayla Wiggins, a 19-year-old girl from Wyoming, just wanted to expand her collection of water Pokémon. Instead, she made a grisly discovery. As she approached a river near her home, she discovered the corpse a man that was drifting in the water.
Saudi Arabia Instates Pokémon Go Ban
While Pokémon Go isn't officially available in Saudi Arabia, it hasn't stopped hoards of people downloading the game illegally. In response to the global Pokémon frenzy, the Middle Eastern country's clerics reintroduced a 2001 religious edict, known as a fatwa. The edict was expanded to prohibit Pokémon Go throughout the region, in belief that it promotes polytheism and evolution.

Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis [Beta – PC]
Disclaimer: This is mostly a backup of an old page created by ATMachine with details about the beta differences in the early versions of Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. It seems that the original page does not exist anymore, so we re-posted this to archive all the interesting details and changes. Enjoy!
The game was developed by LucasArts and released in 1992 as a sequel to “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure”. Originally Fate of Atlantis was meant to be a tie-in to Indiana Jones and the Monkey King/Garden of Life, a rejected script written by Chris Columbus for the third, lost movie. In the end Hal Barwood and Noah Falstein wrote an original story and chosen the Atlantis setting for the project. Many beta screenshots were released in gaming magazines at the time and below you can see all the differences spotted by ATMachine:
A scan of an old copy of Computer Gaming World, showing off the MI1-style interface.
The very earliest versions of Fate of Atlantis that were compiled in-house at LEC had green verbs and a text inventory!
Also, notice the knife thrower’s dart board; it has the ominous outline of a body instead of the five-pointed star seen in the full game.
Another scan of an old box. The inventory arrows shown are the same ones from Monkey Island 1, and a “sharp wood thing” is in Indy’s inventory. (That’s actually what the Sentence Line calls the ship rib while Indy’s in the dark in the full game.)
Check out the backgrounds, too. In the submarine cockpit, the depth lever isn’t drawn in, the top and bottom of the ladder aren’t connected, and the bottom half of the ladder is a bit to the left of where it lies in the game. Plus, check out the Sentence Line. Apparently using the periscope was originally part of the “steering the submarine” puzzle.
In the Algiers rooftop, the balloon ride vendor isn’t visible, and the Sentence Line calls the craft “balloon” instead of the final game’s more impressive “hydrogen-filled balloon”. Plus, the ballast sandbags are missing from the sides of the balloon, and the balloon fabric doesn’t extend down to the hydrogen jet. And Indy is following Sophia into the balloon, whereas in the actual release she gets in after he does.
Another scanned image of the same screenshot, with the top half intact. You can see here the original design of the balloon.
Placeholder dialogue in the scene of Kerner’s introduction.
Here Kerner doesn’t ask what took Indy so long, so we don’t get the mention of his dubious alias “Mr. Smith”.
Also, look carefully at the fan atop Indy’s mini-refrigerator. It’s rotating, an animation cut from the finished game.
On the back of the White Label box, there’s an odd picture of an early fighting GUI.
The health bars are much longer than normal, and surrounded by black, as in Indy 3.
Here is the standard fighting GUI from Fate of Atlantis.
Besides the interface, the layout of the newsstand is slightly different than in the scan above, and a phone booth and streetlamp have been added. Also, the light from the lamp above the theater’s back door is less sharply defined.
A German magazine featured this image in its report on Fate of Atlantis.
This early version of the National Archaeology magazine has a much less photo-like image of Indy and Sophia, standing together.
Also, notice that there are four tiny illegible words at the top of the left page. They’re the perfect size to read The National Geographic Magazine, the name National Geographic used in 1939. Further proof of LEC’s lawyers dodging potential legal trouble.
Compare it to the actual in-game National Archaeology, this one looks much more like a modern magazine.
The original version of the hotel room in Monaco featured a fire extinguisher, as well as a light switch by the door.
Even after the icon inventory was implemented into the game, a few objects weren’t quite drawn in their final forms. In this scan, for instance, one of the locking stones (possibly the Sunstone) looks a bit different, and appears to be on a blue background.
Two different Fate of Atlantis hintbooks provided these scans; they’re both here to demonstrate how hard it is to keep hintbooks in good shape!
But my real reason for putting them here is the inventory in that screenshot.
An alternate Lost Dialogue of Plato shows up, as well as a strange necklace, a non-final version of the mayonnaise jar, and a slightly different National Archaeology.
(The National Archaeology has black text on a white background with a yellow border–just like the original covers of National Geographic. But the person on the front is anachronistic; in 1939 the magazine had no pictures on its cover.)
Notice too that the anaconda is red instead of green as in the finished game.
Also, the wax cat has a circular backdrop instead of a square one, as in the final game.
And Kerner’s passport was an inventory item! It was probably removed due to its having no real use.
This scan from the manual shows the orichalcum-making machine in Atlantis operating differently than it does in the full game. Specifically, all three tiers of the device seem to be functioning at once, as opposed to descending in a sequence from the top layer down.
In this scan the balloon operator is wearing a reddish-brown robe and a white headdress, like the nomads in the desert. Also, the mask appears different than it does in the full game; if you look closely its horns are pointier and the sides are visibly lit. In the actual game the sides of the mask are darker than the front.
According to this screenshot the National Archaeology cover was redrawn a bit between its initial and final forms. Its original look had a white background on the cover and two lines of tiny black “text”; this has what appears to be a gray cover and two lines of light gray text. The final version has only one line of text.
An advertising poster for Fate of Atlantis. Some things are notable even at this size. In particular, notice how Sophia’s auburn hair hadn’t yet been drawn into the close-up of her necklace.
Also, after the name “Maze Path” was nixed, the Wits Path was then redubbed the “Puzzle Path.”
A close-up scan of the screenshots in the ad. In the left image, notice that Indy and Sophia’s sprites are not yet scaled down from their true size, as they are on this screen in the final release.
On the far right, notice that the Atlantean scepter and microtaur are drawn differently than in the actual game; the scepter is more elaborate here, while the microtaur’s proportions are different and the green background behind it is missing.
The eel statue is different as well, lacking the blue background it has in the finished product. Also, the eye holes of Sophia’s necklace are still green, the color used in the original background image to indicate where the glowing effect should take place.
Many thanks to Eriq of the Adventure Gamers forums for sending me a copy of this ad!
Some more interesting differences were found by reading the game text files. You can see a lot of unused sprites in The Cutting Room Floor page.
According to the game text files, Indy’s escape from the submarine on the Wits Path was at one point conceived a bit differently. Indy was to be shot out of the torpedo tube while still wearing the German Kriegsmarine uniform. When he washed up on Crete, though, he’d have changed back to his normal IndyWear. Kerner was to have found the charred sailor’s clothing and shown it to Sophia, claiming that Indy must be dead. (I guess the scene where Kerner, Sophia, and Ubermann leave the sub before Indy escapes hadn’t been written yet.)
Originally the orichalcum was displayed as “1 bead”, “2 beads”, and so forth (plus “3 beads in box” once Indy puts them in the lead-lined gold box). That notation still exists in the FoA text files.
The team also thought about the format “orichalcum (5 beads)”. The idea was that when the player had multiple orichalcum beads, the parentheses with the exact number would show up.
Eventually they just gave up, called it “orichalcum” all the time, and just had Indy count them when the player said “Look at orichalcum”.
At first the puzzle of obtaining the balloon ticket involved purchasing the squab-on-a-stick from the grocer for 20 rupees. In the final game it was modified to have Indy trade an item of Omar’s for the squab, and the “rupees” (which are actually the currency of India) were corrected to “dinars.”
According to the FoA text files, if you picked up Omar’s map in his shop via debug commands, it was named “Al Jabbar’s map.”
In the original builds of FoA, the Team Path was called the Trust Path, the Wits Path was the Maze Path, and the Fists Path was known as the Action Path. (That early name for the Fists Path lasted so long it was accidentally used in one place in the game manual.)
At first in the Team Path, when Indy needs to put Sophia’s necklace in the lead-lined box, the developers had him carry the necklace in his inventory. But later they decided it made more sense, given Nur-Ab-Sal’s true nature, to have Sophia take possession of the box and put the necklace in herself.
The game files at one point label the cup found in Atlantis as a “clay cup,” a description never used in the finished game (as far as I know).

Rare Nintendo Console Found
The N64DD was a failed add-on for the Nintendo 64 that was released exclusively in Japan.
While it was apparently announced for the West at one point, the system absolutely bombed and any plans for a Western release disappeared.
Amazingly, Youtuber MetalJesusRocks found what he assumed was a prototype for one of the early US systems of the 64DD. Amazingly, it seems to be an actual retail system, which makes it incredibly rare.
Sadly, no games were found with the device, meaning there’s nothing to play on it, but it’s still an incredible find.
Games-Anwalt: Warnung vor Pokémon Go?
How to Overcome Glitches, Bugs and Freezes in 'Pokemon GO'
It's still baffling to see the extent that Pokemon GO [Free] has blown up since its release two weeks ago. Even in relatively quiet suburban towns, everyone is glued to their phones to ensure any elusive Pokemon don't slip under the radar, and in big cities there have been thousands of people gathering for critter hunting en masse. As a result, it was extremely disappointing to see the massive server crashes this weekend, as walks and gatherings were spoilt and effectively rendered pointless, as there were no virtual creatures to throw balls at on the way. These major periods of server downtime are unavoidable - however, some of the smaller bugs and freezes that occur during normal gameplay of Pokemon GO can be avoided or compensated for. Don't let a glitch stop you from catching your ten-thousandth Pidgey; here are the steps you should follow for the most seamless Pokemon catching experience currently possible.

1. Sign up with a Google account, not through the Pokemon Trainer Club
Unfortunately for many players who have immersed themselves within the augmented reality experience of Pokemon GO, this may no longer be an option, but for anyone who has yet to start, this is certainly a crucial piece of advice. When the game gives you the option of signing up with either a Google account or through a Pokemon Trainer Club login, definitely choose the former. There are various accounts on Twitter, and from personal experience, of people who sign up through the Trainer Club experiencing far less stable servers, which is the last thing you need while either catching Pokemon or putting down time dependent lures or incense. The draconian and pervasive Google account restrictions of the original launch have also been greatly reduced, so the alleged security and privacy risk the game may have had is significantly less. At the very least, create an alternative account or email address to sign up for Pokemon GO - just make sure you do it through Google and not the Pokemon Trainer Club.
2. Close every open app and restart your phone before playing Pokemon GO
This is also a fantastic fix if you are ever stuck on the Gyarados loading screen - double clicking the Home button on your phone, closing every other app and then restarting your phone has been a great way of getting past any restrictions to logging in. Furthermore, it could also prevent any crashes or freezes during actual gameplay, and it will also go a way to alleviating the terrible battery drain that Pokemon GO inflicts on your smartphone. That being said, investing in a portable battery device is definitely the best bet once you manage to actually get onto the game.

3. If it freezes after throwing a Pokeball, wait thirty seconds and restart the app
Having the game freeze while zooming in on the Pokeball before it starts rolling - coined the 'Zoom of Doom' by my friends - was possibly the most frustrating bug currently in Pokemon GO, yet it doesn't necessarily mean the loss of that rare Pidgeot you tried so hard to catch. If this glitch does occur, wait on the frozen screen for around thirty seconds to a minute (normally until the spinning grey Pokeball in the top left corner disappears) and close the app through double tapping the Home button. Afterwards, simply start Pokemon GO again, and check your Pokemon collection by your most recently caught. If you're lucky, the Pokemon that the game froze on may be in your roster, and the crisis averted. If it is not, make sure you stay in the location you found the Pokemon in the world map and it will almost certainly reappear for another shot at being caught.
4. Take your time, and only tap once
This was the number one rule with computers when I was growing up, and for a game as unstable as Pokemon GO it's one that is still relevant today. Any time you choose an option in the game, whether that is clicking on a Pokemon, a menu button or to challenge a gym, just do so once. More often than not, after a few seconds it will load your desired choice. If it doesn't after a significant period of time, restarting the app will likely fix the issue. What is for certain, however, is angrily tapping a button multiple times will cause the game to crash or freeze, so to become a true Pokemon master, patience is a virtue.

5. Check the Pokemon GO subreddit or our forums for the status of the servers
If all the above doesn't help you play Pokemon GO, it may not be a problem with your phone or even your area - there could still be global stability issues owing to the expanded launch of the game and the server strain this will cause. Have a quick check of the Pokemon GO subreddit, or even our forum thread, and see if other players from your area/country/the world are experiencing the same issues. If they are…
6. Wait for Niantic to fix the game
The only definitive option to fixing the crashing issues and server instability for good is to wait for Niantic to fix all of the problems with the game. Pokemon GO is a fantastic experience when it works, however more often than not it doesn't seem to work as we may have liked. It is extremely frustrating, but Pokemon GO has reached an unprecedented audience far beyond any iPhone app or even video game in general, and it will take a while for Niantic to make it a truly solid experience. Until then, share your problems with the official Pokemon GO site, at Niantic on Twitter, or on our forums, and hopefully Pokemon GO will become a more seamless experience sooner rather than later.

Sega Saturn Copy Protection Broken & New Flash Cartridge In Development
It wasn't long after the Dreamcast's arrival that we began to see unauthorised methods towards booting game backups with ease. Despite this quick turnaround, Sega's prior console, the Saturn, still remained uncracked and has done up until now. Two decades after the Saturn's debut the underloved 32-bit powerhouse has finally been broken into, with plenty of promising developments for homebrew and preservationists.
