Skyrim and Fallout Virtual Pinball Machines Are Here

by Conner Flynn

If you love pinball, you’ll love this news. Xbox One and PC owners can now get Bethesda’s new Skyrim, Fallout and Doom themed pinball machines. They are available today as DLC for the game Pinball FX 2.

skyrim_pinball_1
You can try these new tables for a limited time for free and if you want to own them outright, the 3-pack will cost you $11(USD). I know many people don’t like digital pinball, but when it is done right, it can be just as fun as the real thing, and these tables look pretty fun indeed.

There is a lot of detail here. There are fully rendered models of fire-breathing dragons, vault-dwellers unleashing VAT-powered shots, and there’s even Skyrim’s lock-picking mini-game.

Review: Skulpt Smart Fitness Trainer

by Paul Strauss

While many of us work out on a regular basis, we don’t really have a good sense of our actual fitness, other than maybe our weight and how we feel. Fitness fanatics will definitely want to check out this gadget, which is capable of measuring key data about your muscle and fat composition, providing greater insight into how your body is really doing. The Skulpt is a small wireless device w-+hich can provide body fat and muscle analysis by simply placing its sensor on your body.

skulpt_fitness_sensor_3

It’s about the size of a garage door opener, and has a bunch of conductive strips on back. These strips send tiny amounts of current through your skin, and a circuit measures the resistance to determine your body composition, using a technique called Composition Myography.

skulpt_fitness_sensor_4

Setup is simple, and just requires charging the Skulpt scanner for two hours, installing the Skulpt app on your smartphone, and pairing them together.

skulpt_app_sync_1

Once connected, the exterior of the Skulpt lights up to indicate that it’s ready for use, and the app walks you through the process of measuring each of your major muscle groups. It can measure body fat percentage and relative muscle strength and quality in 24 different areas.

skulpt_scans

Scanning requires a small spritz of water onto the metal strips to ensure they’re conducting properly, and then gentle pressure on the area you want to measure. I found that the measuring process was a little hit or miss, and sometimes I had to either spray a little extra water or try a couple of times to get the sensor to record a measurement, but ultimately, it did work.

skulpt_app

Data is stored in the app, and diagrammed onto a handy body chart. Each measurement can be charted over time, so you can track your progress on each of your muscles, and target workouts to improve fitness in specific areas of your body. I could see this being very useful for optimizing your overall workout plan. In addition, the Skulpt app can provide basic workout guidance of its own, including video workouts which target specific areas that need work. There’s also a “guest mode” which lets you use the Skulpt on another person. I could see this being useful for personal trainers who want to take measurements of their clients.

skulpt_fitness_sensor_2

The Skulpt is a really cool gadget for anyone into personal fitness. It provides insights into what’s really going on with your body’s fat and muscle composition, providing motivation to work on specific areas, and to help you better target your workouts. It’s available now for $99(USD).

Original TMNT Cartoon Opening Recreated Entirely In Mario Paint For Super Nintendo

ninja-turtles-in-mario-paint.jpg This is the original 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle cartoon opening recreated frame by frame by Mike Matei of Cinemassacre entirely in Mario Paint for the Super Nintendo. After the animation Mike discusses the project and how he went about completing it. It sounds like a real labor of love. Like having a baby, but nothing like having a baby except that it took a long time. And especially nothing like having a demon baby like my sister just did. Congrats, Becky! I don't even have a sister. Or at least not one I'm admitting to since she birthed that demon spawn. Keep going for the video.

Finally, Something Useful: Lemmings On A MacBook Pro's Touch Bar

macbook-pro-touch-bar-lemmings.jpg When Apple announced the new Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro I thought the same thing everyone else did: that is way too small for p0rn. But now coder Erik Olsson has finally found a practical use for the thing: displaying Lemmings. You can get the sourcecode HERE if you're interested. I feel like this almost justifies buying a new MacBook. And by almost I mean I just bought 40 of them. *reviewing Amazon order* No, wait, it looks like I just bought a 2017 Sleepy Cats wall calendar. I'm fine with that, that's cool. Keep going for a short video of all the fun to be had.

The Problem of 2016 ... (update 2)

by Teut
... is that major blockbusters which usually sold millions aren't. The latest iteration of Call of Duty seems to be 70% under previous sales (unconfirmed number), Titanfall 2, the best rated game of the recent shooters was sandwiched between the CoD and BF1 release - has trouble to sell. Watchdogs 2 - much better than the first and some even claim their sandbox is better than GTA V - doesn't sell well. And one of my favorites Dishonored 2 isn't selling well despite excellent marketing presence & reviews in all countries.

Even though the consoles are selling better than the last generation and the PC market is stronger than ever.

Why?

As usual there isn't a single reason.

Genre Overlap
If three major shooters target the same audience some of them will suffer. Thats a logical reason. That EA launched Titanfall 2 between BF1 and CoD is bad - even though they claim differently. Experience from the past tells us that Titanfall 2 is dead and it is EA's fault. March would have been a much better month for it. Some might argue CoD and BF1 target different audiences, but no, both target male 13-26's - the difference is style & taste and preference.

Games last longer
Something which we all saw coming and has started with the last console generation and really took off 2016: games are now launched as a service and try to stay alive as long as possible. For this they adapt a lot of MMO techniques and even some f2p mechanics. Check out Destiny or The Division, those are as close to f2p online games as they can be but are premium titles.
Even BF1 has mechanics inside like progression, unlocks etc. to keep players busy for months. And players love it - and play for weeks and months. No one will buy CoD if they are deep into BF1 - or any other game which operates as a service.
This trend will get even worse next year. So the future isn't releasing your key IP every year, but to keep your key IP alive for years with one launch. Just like MMO's do.

Bored
Some players are bored as the sequels are "more of the same". So they skip a generation and play something else. Some are even bored with the systems and play someplace else. Like on mobile. Or they play other games which are unique. The sales of some of those titles being special show that effect.

The jump between last and current generation of these sequels isn't as large as it was in the past.

Not enough time to play
There are just 24 hours per day. Years ago you spend a lot of these hours in games. Now? You spend hours checking social media, your mobile phone, your day to day tasks in your favorite mobile game, on Netflix binging a series. Here is the problem. People do not have the time anymore to sink into a single game. There is enough competition of entertainment in your hands which distract you from hourlong gaming. And its getting worse as the choices are increasing and everyone fights for the users time.
This is the primary reason why sales aren't the key indicator anymore - it is engaged users. Something Activision is even now telling their shareholders in their calls.

Fucking Expensive
Sorry for my words, but really. Games are expensive to develop and if you try to do a AAA product we talk millions, often hundreds of millions. The games industries blockbusters are more expensive to create than most Hollywood movies now. And mobile games aren't easy either. Meanwhile we talk budgets of millions too. This leads to the conservative sequel effect we now encounter even in mid console cycle where we usually see creative sparks. Not this time.

And games are expensive. $69. WTF. Add a season pass. WTF #2. Locked user, he won't be able to spend more for another games. Years ago he could buy two or three for that money he now spends on one of his favorite games.

Oh, and now upgrading consoles. The new thing. So go Pro on PS4 for some new games. The core will do, the rest will follow. Another $399, maybe less when you sell your old (which lessens sales of new consoles).

Too much choice
The app store showed it. Steam is following. Too many games. Too much choice. The entry barrier for world wide publishing is gone - the flood gates are open and thousands of titles are being released.

Yes, a lot of crap is among them but here and there we find gems which never would have seen the light of the day in the past. It is amazing, and in my opinion the only light in the darkness of 2016.

This means
The market is cleaning itself. You either are among the top 10% of the low key indie type titles. The middle will die, quickly.

This means if you run a studio you either go big or you go small, lean agile. There is no other choice anymore.

You see studios dying. Or being closed. 2016 was already bad, 2017 will be worse. Consolidation is happening the the big ones eat up the talent left and form further mega studios to create their huge titles. Some will form smaller studios and lean produce creative gems. And many will fail. And the cycle repeats.

And beware when the current console generation is shrinking. It is not as far away as we hope. The last generation lasted 8 years. This one? Maybe 8 years, maybe 9. They hope to prolong it by updating their hardware. So we are in year 3, 5 more to go. Good luck boys and girls. Make great games and do not follow the main stream.

Update
Some feedback noted that NPD isn't tracking digital sales and most customers moved to digital now. This might make the numbers a bit better but not really so. Todays games with their 60GB downloads aren't for everyone (see previous post).

Another note regarding FPS: Overwatch seems to have taken a lot of these customers and locked them into their grind feast, so they won't have time for others as well. A title I overlooked in the above post.

Pro Tip for AAA pubs: there are more games out there then FPS. Do not forget the genres other people play or mid sized publishers will take them away from you.

Update 2
Most of the hit games I mentioned including CoD, Titanfall 2, Dishonored 2 are on sale for half the price. An indices that they don't sell as well as expected and wrongfully training customers its better to wait than to buy on release. Bad habit.

Miitomo Seems to Contain Hints to Unreleased Nintendo Games

Nintendo's first mobile game, Miitomo, appears to hint at two other projects from the developer.

Miitopia - a 3DS RPG that has been formally announced for Japan but with no western release - is mentioned on a loading screen (seen below). It marks the first time Nintendo has ever mentioned the game in English, sparking speculation of a localised release.

Wii U Report Card 2016

by Oscar Dayus

Usually, we write report cards for each of the major consoles for that year. That's how report cards work. Except the Wii U gave us little to report on in 2016. Other than the enjoyable-but-forgetful Pokken Tournament, we had a middling Star Fox comeback, an average Paper Mario game, and yet another Zelda no-show. Instead, then, as the Wii U reaches the twilight of its life, we decided to write a report card on the console as a whole. Starting right at the beginning…

Initial (and Continuing) Confusion

The Wii U's reveal was a mess. So much focus was placed on the GamePad itself that many people assumed the Wii U was simply an add-on for the hugely successful Wii. The re-use of the Wii name and the fact that Nintendo was referring to the GamePad simply as the "New Controller" didn't exactly help matters. The Wii U, to the public that had snapped up the Wii so readily, was an unnecessary peripheral for a console that had long been resigned to the dusty Monopoly cupboard, retrieved only as a last resort at family dinners.

Many people assumed the Wii U was simply an add-on for the Wii

Nintendo seemed equally confused as to what it wanted the Wii U to be. The Wii brand had been built on 'casual' gaming, on simplicity, and on attracting a (much, much) wider audience of gamers. "Wii U" suggested it would continue the trend, but Nintendo's fanfare for much of the console's life was directed at a more core crowd. Gone were Wii Sports, Wii Play, and a controller that looked like a TV remote; in came a proper pad (sort of); this strange new concept called "asynchronous multiplayer;" and big third party games like Mass Effect 3, Batman: Arkham City, and a couple of Call of Dutys. As these inevitably faltered on Wii U, so did third parties' faith in the console, leading to many of them--most famously EA--dropping all Wii U development and ending support indefinitely. That was probably the final nail in the coffin for the console's hopes of true sales success--but that didn't stop the console from, eventually, finding its feet.

Picking Up Pace

Following its tricky November 2012 launch, the trickle of quality games throughout 2013 helped the Wii U gather some momentum. Lego City Undercover brought a sense of humour the console had thus far been missing, before the return of Pikmin delivered the console its first properly great game. Things continued to improve, slowly, throughout the year, with The Wonderful 101, New Super Luigi U, Rayman Legends, and a Director's Cut of Deus Ex: Human Revolution, all adding strings to the Wii U's bow. But it was still awaiting a stone cold classic, a true reason to buy in.

Step up Super Mario 3D World.

Saved by the Games

Super Mario 3D World was, and is, Nintendo at its best. Nintendo had perfected the art of platforming, of character through animation, of intuitive game design; hell, of game development itself. Super Mario 3D World was bursting with imagination; it threw ideas around with such ease--introducing them and discarding them again before the player had even realised what was happening. Most games would center themselves one or two of these mechanics--such as the doppelganger-spawning cherries, or the infamous cat suit, or the concept that birthed an entire spin-off game, the Captain Toad puzzle levels--but SM3DW plays with them, uses them in ingenious ways to thrill the player, and then does it all over again with a fresh idea in the very next level. It's breathless, and brilliant.

Characters shone in ways they had never quite been able to before, too. Nintendo games always had sublime aesthetics, but with SM3DW the Wii U's considerable but hitherto untapped power was finally showing the publisher's gorgeous art in the best possible light. The Wii U, at long last, had a swagger.

SM3DW kicked off a period of stellar games for the Wii U. Soon came the acclaimed Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, which had nearly as many ideas popping out its seams as 3D World. The Wii U also facilitated an indie revolution around 2014, becoming home to games like Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones, Affordable Space Adventures, and Shovel Knight. The publisher even rescued Bayonetta 2 from development purgatory, much to the delight of fans and critics alike. The Wii U was truly in its golden age.

And that's all without mentioning the console's greatest game: Mario Kart 8.

Playing Mario Kart 8 is a beautiful experience; not only in its aesthetic, but in the moments it creates. Who could forget the greatest meme of all time, the Luigi death stare?

Luigi's face getting plastered all over the internet was nothing new of course--the Year of Luigi took care of that--but the shareability was new. You could upload clips or entire races to YouTube, as well as enjoying (if that's the correct word…) the arguments mid-chase with your friends/family members/ anyone crazy enough to challenge you at a 200cc run of Rainbow Road yet again. Local multiplayer was back--and so was Nintendo.

Second Choice

Despite this, only the most staunch Nintendo fan would buy the Wii U over a PS4 or Xbox One at this point. The competitors' increased graphical power, superior online support, and larger selection of games meant that they were and remain the obvious choice for consumers.

But party potential and a steadily improving library helped cement the Wii U's place as the second console of choice. A couple of price cuts, allied with games that couldn't be found anywhere else--and memories that couldn't be created anywhere else--helped the Wii U sneak into homes to sit next to the PlayStation or Xbox, not instead of. A small consolation, you may think, but for a console that looked as if it would be completely doomed, that's not bad going.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, and Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate kept the Wii U's engine ticking over, even if they didn't quite propel it into the new dimension that Nintendo--and we--hoped they would. Splatoon, however, reinvented the shooter for a family audience by placing the focus not on blasting other people, but simply on splattering paint everywhere. Unfortunately, despite some cool in-game timed events, Splatoon was hamstrung by Nintendo's draconian, outdated attitudes toward online play.

Still in the Dark Ages?

Nintendo had long been--and continues to be--accused of remaining in the dark ages, with boring concerns like account migration and purchase history not carrying over still lingering. For the longest time, the company didn't really do DLC updates. That changed with Mario Kart 8. Two content packs doubled the total number of tracks in the game, added new characters, and--for the first time--introduced non-Mario Kart characters like Link and Animal Crossing's Villager.

Nintendo had long been accused of remaining in the dark ages

Then there's Amiibo, the NFC-enabled figurines that could interact with the Wii U GamePad to unlock even more in-game content. In Mario Kart 8 this functionality was limited to new costumes, and in truth few games, if any, fully utilised the potential of Amiibo. That didn't stop the toys becoming a (somewhat brief, but nonetheless significant) phenomenon By February 2016, around 31 million amiibo had been shipped, with one selling for over $25,000--and that one was broken!

With sharing functionality, DLC, and Amiibo, Nintendo is showing a willingness to adapt. The changes might have come too soon to save the Wii U's sales prospects, but they bode well for what the future might hold.

Sunset for the Wii U

By 2015, the big releases had started to slow. As it became clear that, to some extent, the Wii U was a lost cause, the wait between each game grew longer, and those titles weren't quite the heavy hitters Wii U owners had hoped for. Yoshi's Woolly World was undeniably cute, but didn't deliver on its potential as the next great Nintendo platformer. Similar could be said for Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, and even though Super Mario Maker was a superb concept, its online functionality problems (those again) might mean it doesn't go down as a true classic in the way that Super Mario 3D World and Mario Kart 8 will. The sun had begun to set on the Wii U's life.

A multitude of Lego ports, Minecraft: Wii U Edition, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD, and Star Fox Zero were the faint stars for Wii U owners to look to, but it was clear by this point that Nintendo's focus was elsewhere. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the last glimmer of sunlight disappearing over the horizon: it was initially promised as a 2015 title. Then 2016. Now 2017, with it also coming to the Wii U's successor, Nintendo Switch. Nintendo is understandably attempting to maximise profits, but Zelda going multiplatform is a kick in the teeth for players who bought a Wii U for Zelda. It almost feels like--by bringing about its next generation earlier than feels right--the publisher is attempting to sweep the Wii U under the carpet.

But to do so would be to overlook the greats the Wii U has spawned. Yes, the name was stupid. Sure, the GamePad was unwieldy and underused. And yes, although things are changing, Nintendo still doesn't understand The Internet. But the Wii U will go down as a console with an unparallelled collection of exclusive games. Third parties be damned, Nintendo didn't need you; Super Smash Bros., Bayonetta 2, Super Mario 3D World, Splatoon, Mario Kart 8, Monster Hunter 3, and a new Zelda to come. Not a bad life for a new Wii controller.

The Good The Bad
– Mario Kart 8, Super Mario 3D World, and more will go down as all time classics. – The name remains a mistake, even if it doesn't seem as weird any more.
– Nintendo finally began to understand the internet, and amiibo are addictively collectible. – Rapid demise of third party support.
– Indies are now welcome on Nintendo platforms. – The GamePad was underutilized, expensive, and an all-round bad controller.

Unreleased 'Akira' Nintendo Game Boy Cartridge Discovered & Revealed

Akira-Game-Boy-Prototype-RevealedAs many will tell you, the lack of a decent game based on the cult classic anime Akira is somewhat criminal. While the Japanese did see a text-based adventure game starring Kanedo and Tetsuo on the Nintendo Famicom, Western gamers were stuck with the abysmal Commodore Amiga offering from Ice - one which saw some of the lowest ever review scores in gaming publications. That said, there were several other adaptations planned for gamers, some of which are just coming to light.

PIXELKITSCH RETROFLASH 185: Binarium

by pixelkitsch

'Super Mario Run' Set to Make $71 Million in First Month, Only Half of 'Pokemon GO'

by Tasos Lazarides

Jimmy Fallon's hands-on with Super Mario Run [Free] last night has officially ushered in the iOS season of the Nintendo mascot. A new report published today looks at how much money Super Mario Run is set to make in its first month and how it will compare with the other recent juggernaut, Pokemon GO. The game is expected to bring in more than $71 million in worldwide gross revenue during its first month, less than half of Pokemon GO and also less than Clash Royale. In terms of downloads, though, Super Mario Run is expected to double that of Pokemon GO during the first month. These are all projections of course and could be completely off, so we'll have to wait for the numbers to drop.

Super Mario RUn

These numbers don't necessarily translate into Super Mario Run being less successful than those two other games I mentioned; what they might show is how the difference in monetization will affect early - and maybe total - revenue. Super Mario Run is free to download and then $10 to unlock while the other two rely on IAPs. I can guarantee you that developers and publishers will watch Super Mario Run's revenue closely to see how that monetization system compares to a fully F2P game.

'Super Mario Run' Seems to be a Hit With Investors

by Tasos Lazarides

When big developers give the public an early taste of their games, many wait to see how investors will react and whether stocks will rise or fall. Usually those first clues hint at whether investors believe a game will be a hit or not. Well, it looks like after taking a look at the early Super Mario Run [Free] gameplay videos and people's reactions after their brief hands-on with the game, investors are quite convinced the game will do very well. That belief materialized as a 3.7 percent climb of the Nintendo stock yesterday, the highest in four months, although nowhere near the brief rise due to the mistaken belief that Nintendo was behind Pokemon GO.

This 4 percent rise probably means that investors aren't worried that Super Mario Run's always-online requirement will hurt the game's revenue - or at least hurt it in any meaningful way - and are pretty confident that the game will be a success.

MapleStory Players Cumulatively Commit 17,000+ Years In-Game

by Jason Imms

Nexon, maker of the unbearably adorable side-scrolling MMO MapleStory, has released an infographic claiming that more than 17,800 years have been cumulatively spent by players in the game since launch.

MapleStory is a light free-to-play MMO that takes players on a journey through Maple World, ultimately facing antagonist the Black Mage. Players level-up characters through typical RPG methods such as defeating monsters and working jobs, and can interact with other players via parties and guilds, and by playing minigames. The game was developed in South Korea by Wizet, which was acquired by its publisher Nexon thanks to the game's success.
