A Creepy, Abandoned Westworld-Like Amusement Park In Japan

abandoned-old-west-park-4.jpg These are the shots of the now abandoned Western Village Old West Amusement Park taken by Tokyo Times photographer Lee Chapman. The park, which is a few hours north of Tokyo, opened in the 70's but closed in 2006, presumably because the hosts didn't live up to consumer expectations. You should have gotten Dr. Ford and Arnold on that shit! These are all Westworld references, by the way. I'm only on episode six though so don't ruin anything for me. "The people that populate the park are actually very realistic robots." What?! *smashes DVR* I knew there was something weird about them! "You learn that in the first minute of the show. People who haven't even watched the show already know that." Listen: I'm not very perceptive if that's what you're asking. Keep going for a handful more shots.

Girl Crawls Out Of Electronics Store Television In 'Rings' Prank

rings-movie-prank.jpg This is a 'Rings' prank perpetrated by Paramount Pictures to advertise the February 3rd release of the movie. In it, Samara crawls out of an electronics store television to scare unsuspecting customers. It was okay. But what's up with these Ring movies still coming out, have people really not learned to stop watching sketchy VHS tapes already? Whatever happened to that old 'better safe than sorry' mantra? You can call me chicken all you want, I'm not watching it. I am not a victim of peer pressure. "So if all your friends jumped off a bridg--" *pinching nose* Cannonball! Keep going for the video.

Fish Can Drive Its Aquarium Around By Swimming In Different Directions

goldfish-car.jpg "I'm coming for you, Mr. Laptop." This is a video demonstration of a fish driving its aquarium around by swimming in the direction it wants to go. The fish's location in the tank in relation to the middle determines the car's direction and speed (ie being at the very front end of the tank is full speed ahead). It appears to be a moderately upgraded version of this fish-on-wheels we posted back in 2014, back before it was cool to be a fish driving without a license. I'm going to do the same thing, but I'm going to give my fish a jetpack so it can finally be the bird it's always dreamed of. "How do you know it wants to be a bird?" Because it told me. Well, it was either that or "Blub blub blub" but I asked again and fish are notorious for refusing to repeat themselves. Keep going for the video.

Alien Zippo Lighter Collection: Kill It with Fire

by Paul Strauss

There are lots of things that can kill you, but two of them that are almost sure to do you in are cigarettes and xenomorphs. Naturally, cigarettes result in a slow, painful sort of demise, whereas the xenomorph will either rip you apart in seconds or melt you with its acid blood. I think I’d prefer the xenomorph death.

Fans of smoking and xenomorphs will definitely want to run out and buy this cool Alien-themed Zippo lighter collection.

This awesome looking 11-1/2″ tall desktop statue has an illuminated xenomorph standing proudly on top, looking over a collection of Zippos with Alien artwork on them. While the lighters aren’t as powerful as flamethrowers, you might be able to tape a bunch of them together to scare off monsters that invade your spaceship.

In order to get this awesome display, you’ll need to subscribe to The Bradford Exchange’s limited edition run of 8,000 units. For each payment of $39.99(USD), you’ll get another Alien lighter, and the third issue in the series will include the display – valued at $100. A total of eight different lighters will round out the collection over time, so you’re looking at a total $320 investment for the whole thing. If you’re an Alien fanatic, you’re going to need this.

Sega’s Big Retro Spotify Debut

by Nick Thorpe

Sega's Big Retro Spotify Debut

Sega has recently put up, rather quietly, a huge number of videogame soundtracks on the music streaming service Spotify. You can see a full list by clicking here, but we thought we’d pull out some highlights below!

Some Sega games are already well-known for their soundtracks, in particular Jet Set Radio and its sequel Jet Set Radio Future, the arcade classic OutRun and the cult Saturn hit NiGHTS Into Dreams. However, there are some lesser-known classics on here too – the music for the 3DS favourite Rhythm Thief & The Emperor’s Treasure is available to stream, as is the surprisingly good accompaniment to the 2002 Shinobi reboot. There are also plenty of arcade soundtracks, including the likes of Virtua Fighter, Galaxy Force II and Gunblade NY, and all manner of Sonic soundtracks, which are often the best bits of the recent releases. Best of all, though, is the inclusion of a complete Alex Kidd soundtrack!

Here’s hoping we see more publishers following suit, because this has really brightened our day.

Here's A Good Retro Controller For PC Gaming

by Leo Wichtowski

Many cheap retro controllers look the part, but fall down when it comes down to build quality. Thankfully the iBuffalo classic USB gamepad doesn’t succumb to these issues. It feels every bit as good as an original Super Nintendo pad does.

Atari Lynx Review: Ms. Pac-Man on Lynx Lounge

Waka, waka, waka.

Hey what’s up everybody? Welcome back to the Lynx Lounge! I’m your host BTB, and have we got a real icon today that we are going to examine and observe. And that is the glorious Ms. Pac-Man for the Atari Lynx!

Now everybody knows the history and the importance of Pac-Man. Pac-Man gave us fever, but Ms. Pac-Man really stole our hearts. Is that cheesy enough for you? It’s true! So let’s go ahead and take a look at how this version of Ms. Pac-Man stacks up on the Atari Lynx.

Watch Ms. Pac-Man for the Atari Lynx

Are you looking for an almost perfect arcade conversion for Ms. Pac-Man, to go? Well, it might just possibly be this cartridge right here. Let’s check it out.

But before we do that, I have my Pac-Man tie, my Pac-Man watch, and my Pac-Man telephone, and I am ready to walk down memory lane and play Ms. Pac-Man. Are you ready? Let’s go!

I shouldn’t have to be the one to tell you how important Pac-Man is, as far as the history of video games go. It was a gigantic hit. Pac-Man stuff was everywhere. There was Pac-Man merchandise, there was Pac-Man cereal, there was a cartoon, lunch pail, pretty much Pac-Man everything. I really feel like that was the start of the big video game boom.

  • Ms. Pac-Man Atari Lynx Game Card Cartridge Box Instructions Pouch

Now obviously in the late 1970s Space Invaders really paved the way, but then we had a slew of space games. Everything was space. Space this, space that, you shoot aliens or shoot rocks, and it was all space. Pac-Man was very important because all of a sudden.. now we have a character! We have ghosts that have names! And they’re trying to get Pac-Man and you gotta get out of their way! And then you get your power up, and then you can chase after them. It was really innovative and it was absolutely what we needed in the early ’80s.

So not only was Pac-Man a financial success, in fact it was a video game craze, it was nuts! It was also important in the realm of pushing the narrative forward. So how do you follow up with something like that? Well, you follow up with the sequel: Ms. Pac-Man. Some might say “Hey, it’s just Pac-Man with a bow” but if you really play it, there are a lot of differences and they all make a lot of sense.

“Given the choice to play Pac-Man or Ms. Pac-Man I am always, always, always, going to play Ms. Pac-Man. There’s something just so iconic about that powder blue and pink cabinet.”

Ms. Pac-Man on Atari Lynx vs. everything else

How does the Atari Lynx version of Ms. Pac-Man stack up to the competition? Well, it’s got some very, very good things about it, and it’s got a couple of things that annoy me. It might just be a personal preference, but I’ll give you my opinion as we go on.

The graphics look pretty good. They’re very colorful, and all of the mazes from the arcade game are represented correctly as far as the layout goes.

However, let me ask you this question: Why is this version of Ms. Pac-Man vertical? I mean, the screen layout in the traditional arcade cabinet is a vertically oriented screen. Why didn’t they do that here, and take advantage of the Atari Lynx’s unique ability to display vertical games? They did that with some other Lynx games, and this would have been perfect for that. I don’t understand why they didn’t attempt to do Ms. Pac-Man like this.

Ms. Pac-Man for Atari Lynx

The vertical Atari Lynx Ms. Pac-Man that could have been

Even though the screen is not presented vertically, it does get one thing very, very, right: it shows the full maze. I have a full overview of the maze, and where the ghosts are. In every single portable out there at the time, they opted for a zoomed-in view. Which means you only get to see about one quarter to half of the maze. You don’t know where the ghosts are on the top half. That’s lame. I don’t like it. BIG score for the Lynx for a Full-Screen View.

To me, this version of Ms. Pac-Man on the Atari Lynx reminds me of the Atari 5200 version of Pac-Man. The ghosts don’t have eyes. And I don’t know why that bugs me, but just with that little loss of detail your charm and your quality goes down a notch.

The sound is pretty much arcade-perfect. Now, nothing really jumps out at me as far as it being incorrect, or “that sounds out of place”, it all sounds like the arcade.

Tight, responsive gameplay

So how does it control? Well this is my next big “nit-picky thing” I guess you could say. I don’t think it controls that well. So if you take a look at the Atari Lynx’s cross pad, I feel like it’s just a little too big for this game. There’s another game as well that I feel this d-pad really screws things up with: one of them is Ms. Pac- Man, and the other one is Ninja Gaiden III. Two games that call for very precise movement, and this pad is just a little bit too big.

So what happens is, it takes a little bit longer to get from one side of the d-pad to the other. I know, weird right? You wouldn’t even think about that. It’s responsive, but the pad is too big. However, if the pad was smaller it would look weird on the unit. let me give you an example:

Atari Lynx Nintendo Entertainment System NES Atari 2600 5200 7800 TurboGrafx-16 Sega Master System

All we ever needed were 2 buttons and a d-pad

Here’s an overview of some game pads. Now, some of them you may have played with, and others you may not have played with. So you can see here that the Atari Lynx d-pad is responsive, but there is a lot of play from the left side to the right side, and from up to down.

The classic Nintendo control pad is very tight and very responsive from one side to the other. The same goes with this Atari 7800 control pad, which a lot of you probably have not played with, because this was a European exclusive controller. It’s unfortunate that the 7800 control pad didn’t come packed with the Atari 7800 system in America, but we will go over that on an upcoming episode of 7800 Avenue.

Now, another one of my all-time favorite controllers is the TurboPad. I love the TurboGrafx-16! I always have. It’s got turbo buttons, the buttons are responsive, and its got a very, very, tight feel in the d-pad. Very comfortable.

TurboGrafx-16 Video Game Console and TurboPad

TurboGrafx-16 console & TurboPad controller (1989)

Then there’s the Sega Master System pad. This is not a very good pad, whatsoever. It’s actually one of my least favorites, and its terrible! It has nubs on it that dig into your thumb, and it’s very, very, mushy. The buttons are very mushy, and its got a very, very, long throw from one side to the other. The Sega Master System pad feels very, very, similar to whats happening over here with the Lynx pad. Too much play from one side to the other. Same with the Sega Master System. The Nintendo, TurboGrafx-16, and Atari control pads are all very tight and responsive, something that this game absolutely calls for. Tight responsive game play.

So we just did a little pad breakdown there, and I hope you found that informative. I know I did. I learned a lot. The control doesn’t ruin the game for me, but you have to get used to it. Now remember the arcade had that little tiny ball-top joystick, very short throw four-way joystick and that was perfect for playing Ms. Pac-Man. You can beat that game up all day long, and it would still be responsive. It’s like any other video game system where you know you really have to get used to the controls that you were given.

Ms. Pac-Man Box Atari Lynx

And if you didn’t like those controls, well then you just go out and get a third-party controller, and you try that one out. If you didn’t like that one, you try another one. Unfortunately you don’t really have that luxury on the Atari Lynx because it’s a handheld system, and it is what it is. Like I said there are only two games in the library that I have found where this is a problem. Other than that, this is golden.

Thoughts

So again, if you’re collecting for the Atari Lynx you have to ask yourself “Do I need Ms. Pac-Man?” and the answer is absolutely. You should have Ms. Pac-Man on Atari 7800. You should have Ms. Pac-Man on Atari 2600. You should have Ms. Pac-Man on your Nintendo Entertainment System, and wherever else you can get it.

Okay folks, that is it for me! I’m having some Sunny-D right now and enjoying my weekend. Check out my other shows: The Jag Bar, if you want to take a look at Atari Jaguar stuff, Lynx Lounge for Atari Lynx, or 7800 Avenue if you’re into classic Atari 2600 and Atari 7800 video games. I will see you on the next episode! Have a great one guys, see ya!

Test: Yakuza 0

'Clash of Clans' Dev Will Listen to Players After Ad Failures

by Tasos Lazarides

When Clash of Clans [Free] and Clash Royale [Free] ads pop up on my screen - either when at home or at the movies - I'm always amazed at how much money Supercell is willing to spend to advertise its games, which soon turns into a "they must have a ton of money" kind of thought train. Well, apparently all those spectacular ads have been failing miserably for the developer and have done nothing to revert the current negative trend of revenue for the developer's games. Chief executive and founder of Supercell, Ilkka Paananen, came out and said that their marketing ideas have all gone wrong and have started realizing that the competition in the sector is much higher than it used to be.

Clash of Clans

What Supercell quickly realized afterwards was that it hadn't been listening to its players' complaints - like the inability to mute emotes in Clash Royale and the lack of updates - which they plan to now remedy. It's refreshing to hear that a F2P juggernaut like Supercell finally realized its players are more than just constantly-paying automatons that will buy those IAPs no matter how the game is doing. Hopefully, this is a turning point for Clash Royale and Clash of Clans. Or it could just be talk to easy investors.

'March to a Million' Is Kairosoft's Latest Music-Based Simulator, Out Now on the App Store

by Rob Funnell

It's been a while since the last Kairosoft game landed on the App Store. Unless any slipped through the cracks, The Manga Works [$4.99] launched all the way back in August 2016, and that five month gap is uncharacteristically long for the pioneers of iOS simulation games. Thankfully for any hardcore Kairosoft enthusiasts, the wait is finally over - today, March to a Million [$4.99] has released on the App Store, and features the developer's first major foray into the music industry, as you look to locate the brightest stars to form an elite band and eventually win the highly coveted 'Million Award' when you reach the big time.

march to a million 1 march to a million 2

There have been so many Kairosoft games that it feels somewhat redundant in explaining how they work - if you've played any one of their previous management titles, March to a Million features the same simulation style of gameplay that many have come to love over the years. From the screenshots, even the UI is extremely reminiscent of Game Dev Story [$1.99], so if you're looking for a radical change or a major step forward from Kairosoft, March to a Million likely isn't the game you've been looking for. However, as the old cliché goes, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it', and that is very much the case for March to a Million - Kairosoft have made a name for remarkable consistency within the simulation genre, and so if you're particularly into the music industry, this latest release will certainly be a lot of fun. March to a Million is available now for $4.99 on the App Store - for more discussion, be sure to head down to our forum thread.
