Personify Your Debt to Get Motivation to Tackle It

by Eric Ravenscraft

Personify Your Debt to Get Motivation to Tackle It

Paying off your debt is one of the most soul-crushing things adults have to do. As finance blog Fiscal Flamingo points out, it may feel less dreadful and more fun if instead of "paying down your student loans", you're "paying off Al Capone."

It sounds silly, but deep down, many of us love giving things names and faces where they don't exist. It's why we resonate with Pixar movies about toys and robots, and it's why we feel sad when Jeff breaks Steve. As Fiscal Flamingo puts it:

When I was in the midst of the credit card juggle and could barely keep my head above water – "Jillian" was the name of my debt. Jillian was the girl that stole my boyfriend. (Names have been change to protect the innocent.)

Let's just say I had a ton of fun with comments such as,

I'm one step closer to kicking Jillian to the curb.

I'm sticking it to Jillian.

And every time I wrote a check to Mr. MasterCard, Mr. Visa and Mr. Discover,

Take that Jillian.

(Cause I'm mature like that.)

What you name your debt can be up to you. It doesn't even have to be a person, necessarily. You can refer to your car payment as "punching the Kraken in the face," if that's the most inspiring to you. The point is to entertain yourself enough that you don't dread doing what needs to be done.

Play Store On Tablets Getting Tablet-Focused Top Lists, Non-Optimized Apps Marked As 'Designed For Phones'

by Ryan Whitwam

Play-StoreIt has traditionally been hard to find properly optimized tablet apps on Android. At first it was simply because there weren't any, but increasingly the problem is visibility. Google is aiming to change that with some new tablet-specific tweaks to the on-device Play Store app. Not only will tablet users see more tablet apps, but they'll be able to tell which apps are designed for larger screens.

The first of two changes affects the top lists in the Play Store app.

Alleged Nexus 5 images show Android 4.4 KitKat interface changes

by Jerry Hildenbrand

Nexus 5

New hardware and software shown in the latest round of Nexus leaks

There's a new batch of Nexus pictures floating around today, showing what's purported to be the Nexus 5 from LG complete with plenty of looks at Android 4.4 KitKat.

The images, taken in Italy and displayed on the Tutto Android website, show us a look at the lock screen, the home screen, and a look at the apps of the Nexus 5. Of course, this leads to speculation of exactly what we're seeing, and things like a Tap to Pay mode in the settings and transparent status and navigation bars have a lot of folks excited.

Just as interesting is some testimony from the leaker themselves. The Nexus 5 is said to be fast and smooth, with KitKat being a "lighter" version of the OS that helps in the performance department. Dual stereo speakers are acknowledged in the bottom portion of the device, and the camera is said to provide excellent image stabilization.

Combined with the rumors of a reveal next week, things should start getting exciting right about now. The changes and new hardware look pretty interesting, and we're hoping for an official announcement soon. As things stand now, the only people that really know anything are the people not saying anything.

Hit the break to see the rest of the images, and check out the source link for their take on what they are seeing.

You don't necessarily have to use a name (particularly a mobster name, even though I think it's way cooler). The point is to use words that are more engaging than the looming dread that typical debt talk gives us. The more light-hearted you feel when paying off your debts, the more likely you are to do what needs to be done.

Don't Fret Over Your Mistakes, They Make You More Likeable

by Whitson Gordon

Don't Fret Over Your Mistakes, They Make You More Likeable

We worry a lot over the mistakes we've made, and to a point, that's a good thing. It can help us become better people. But eliminating mistakes altogether isn't the best goal—in fact, some studies have shown it makes you more likeable.

Kevin Lee explains over at Buffer:

Don’t worry about tripping and falling in front of your boyfriend; doing so will only make him like you more. Go ahead and admit your failures to your friends; your humanness will endear yourself to them.

These mistakes attract charm as a result of the Pratfall Effect: Those who never make mistakes are perceived as less likeable than those who commit the occasional faux pas. Messing up draws people closer to you, makes you more human. Perfection creates distance and an unattractive air of invincibility. Those of us with flaws win out every time.

So that moment you're so embarrassed about? It might not be as bad as you think it is. It might just make you more human. Besides: if you aren't ever making mistakes, then you aren't doing anything.

Google TV reportedly being phased out in favor of a new 'Android TV' brand

by Nathan Ingraham

It's been a quiet year on the Google TV front — the company's biggest portal into the living room was barely a presence at Google I/O this past summer, and now we're getting an idea why that was the case. According to a report from GigaOm, Google plans to phase out the Google TV brand — but a rebranded "Android TV" will still be available to manufacturers. That's according to an unnamed executive at an unnamed consumer electronics manufacturer, but it wouldn't come as a big surprise despite the ambiguities. Most smart TVs already have many of the features Google TV offers, and the platform itself is based off of Android.

With Google TV never gaining significant mindshare from a consumer perspective, it might make sense to relaunch...

Judge dismisses suit against Google for bypassing Safari privacy settings

by Adi Robertson

A Delaware judge has dismissed a class-action lawsuit against Google for secretly storing Safari cookies even when users had opted out. In a ruling from yesterday, Judge Sue Robinson wrote that the plaintiffs — who had filed suit under a variety of privacy and anti-hacking laws — hadn't proved real harm under any of them, nor had they convincingly argued that Google had violated their legal rights.

The basic facts of the case aren't particularly in dispute. In early 2012, researchers discovered that Google and several advertising networks had found an exploit that let them surreptitiously store cookies through the Safari and mobile Safari browsers, regardless of users' privacy settings. While Google essentially called the process an...

Facebook Just Killed A Privacy Setting, So It's A Good Time To Do Your Own Checkup

by Selena Larson

Facebook just killed the privacy feature that controlled who could search for your profile by first or last name. The company actually eliminated this feature last year for users who didn't have the setting checked, but now it's delivering the coup de grace even for those of us who actually use it.

(Update: Facebook clarified that this search setting won't disappear—for those still using it, that is—until users get a notification and click a button reading, "Okay, I understand."  Those notifications will be going out in coming weeks, not necessarily today.)

The company claims the feature was created when the social network was simply a directory of profiles. Now, though, Facebook says this privacy setting has become more confusing than helpful—particularly in the wake of the company's introduction of Graph Search, which lets users search for each other and for status updates, and open groups that show profile pictures and images to anyone in the group.

I'm one of the users that's losing the privacy setting today. I implemented the feature years ago when I worried about showing up in unwanted searches. Right now, only my friends can find my timeline by name. But not for much longer.

Which makes now as good a time as any to review your own privacy settings, just in case Facebook has tweaked anything else you might have been counting on.

The Facebook Settings You Should Check

If you're like me and like to share your social life with a select group of friends, there are a few settings you should make sure are in place going forward.

1. Privacy Settings

You'll find these as a drop-down option when you click the gear icon in the upper right-hand corner of your Facebook page on the Web. Here, you can tailor the audience for your posts. You can go back and make all your posts private in this section, access the Activity Log (see the next section), and determine how widely you want to distribute future posts by default.

You can also set who can contact you and how. This is where you will no longer see the "look up my timeline by name" feature, but you can still control who finds you by searching an email or phone number.

You can choose to let other search engines link directly to your timeline. By keeping this off, Google, Bing or Yahoo searches for your name won't point to your Facebook page.

2. Activity Log

In your activity log, you can view and edit your posts, messages, posts you've been tagged in, photos, likes, and comments. You can edit or delete any activity dating back to when you first joined Facebook. You can see your Activity Log by choosing it from the drop-down privacy settings menu. (Note: it's both kind of fun and occasionally horrifying to look back at your Facebook history.)

3. Timeline and Tag Settings

After you've clicked into your privacy settings, look at the left-hand column for finer grained control of your Timeline and tags. If you want to know who's tagging you in posts before your name publicly appears on someone's timeline—and deny them if you choose—make sure the "review posts" setting is turned on. In this section you can also determine the audience viewing your timeline, and who is allowed to tag you in posts.

Facebook uses facial recognition to offer tag suggestions to users when they upload a photo (freaky, right?). If you don't want your face automatically generating tag suggestions, turn the feature off here.

4. Deactivate or Delete Account

Facebook doesn't want to lose your data. It makes it easy to deactivate your account under "Security Settings," but this move only hides you from the public. People won't be able to view your timeline or search for you, but some information, such as messages you sent, will still be visible to your friends. When you deactivate your account, Facebook saves all your information including friends, photos, interests, and posts for your inevitable return.

To actually delete your account, you have to fill out a brief form. Although before you go, I suggest downloading your Facebook history first, available under "General Settings," in case you want to look back on all the time you wasted.

It's important to note that once you post something on Facebook, or any other social network, it's no longer private, period. While Facebook makes it fairly easy to control with whom you share information, the best way to keep your information private is to not post it anywhere in the first place.

How to Mute Retweets from Any User on Twitter

by Whitson Gordon

How to Mute Retweets from Any User on Twitter

Some people are great to follow on Twitter, but they retweet a ton of annoying things—maybe it's a brand that retweets everything everyone says about it, or a hilarious novelty account that occasionally retweets NSFW images. Whatever the case, you can actually mute retweets from any user right on Twitter.

This option's actually been there for a long time, but a few of us just noticed it. Just head to your list of followers on Twitter.com and click the little "person" dropdown on the right-hand side. Select "Turn off Retweets" and you'll never see anything that person retweets. Even though you perform this action on Twitter.com, it'll mute retweets in your twitter desktop clients too, which is great. You'll still see traditional retweets ("RT @someone:"), but it's a nice option for those more annoying users.

CPJ issues first-ever report on press freedom in the United States

by Xeni Jardin

Barack Obama leaves a press conference in the East Room of the White House August 9. (AFP/Saul Loeb)

Josh Stearns says,

The Committee to Protect Journalists just released their first ever report on press freedom in the US. For those who have followed the administration’s policies, court cases and actions related to leaks and the press, the report doesn’t contain a lot of new information. What it does is weave together each of the cases and strategies the administration has pursued, surfacing key themes and illustrating that these examples are not aberrations, but part of a coordinated strategy. Presenting this bigger picture reframes the debate over press freedom in America and reminds us that we need to demand a major course correction. Here is my take on the report and what is missing.

Outlook app updated with better syncing and a new set of colors

by Jerry Hildenbrand

Outlook

Microsoft's Outlook app for Android has some new tools to go with a new set of colors

Microsoft has updated the Outlook app for Android, and with the new version they have brought some changes that they think will make for a better mail experience. The bullet points here are server-side search, improved offline mail storage, new app colors, vacation replies and account aliases. It's a healthy update to an app that serves millions of users.

The biggest change for power-users is the server-side searching. Previously, if you wanted to find something in your mailbox you had to make sure it was downloaded. With today's update, both your local mailbox and Microsoft's storage can be searched. The addition of a new color scheme, and things like account aliases should also be welcome.

We still say Gmail is the best way to get your mail on your Android, but if you're tied to Outlook, things just got a little bit better. You can grab the app or the update via the Google Play link above.

Jony Ive's custom-designed Leica camera took nine months and 55 engineers to build

by Chris Welch

With the Product Red charity auction headlined by Apple designer Jonathan Ive and Marc Newson fast approaching, the two men recently sat down with Vanity Fair to discuss their involvement. As it turns out, Ive and Newson have been friends for decades, which they assumed would lead to a fairly straightforward and easy collaboration process. That turned out not to be the case. The two spent over a year and a half pulling together items to be auctioned off in New York City next month — each with a design tweak that came directly from Ive or Newsom.

In the end, they had time to create just two products from the ground up. One is an office desk produced by Neal Feay Studio. The second is a much-publicized Leica Digital Rangefinder...

HP Chromebook 11 review

by David Pierce

I’m never offline anymore.

I have Wi-Fi at home and at the office, nearly every hotel or coffee shop on the planet offers connectivity, and for the rare in-between times, my phone serves as a perfectly usable (if slightly awkward) mechanism for getting on the internet. The only time I can’t get online now is underground on the subway — and even that may not be true for long.

Meanwhile, my computer is increasingly becoming just a portal to the internet. I use Word and Outlook and Photoshop, but even those apps are designed to be perpetually connected and intertwined — and browser-based approximations of those apps are ever improving. Even PC games are meant to be played online. If I have no Wi-Fi, my MacBook Air feels...

Twitter announces tablet-optimized Android app, makes it a Samsung exclusive

by Dan Seifert

Twitter officially announced its tablet-optimized app for Android devices today, finally giving users with large-screen Android devices a better experience than just the enlarged phone version of the app. The app offers a two-column landscape layout to better take advantage of the greater screen real-estate offered by tablets, and looks quite similar to the interface that Twitter uses in its app for the iPad. Unfortunately, the company is limiting access to the new app to Samsung tablets — initially the new Galaxy Note 10.1, and other Samsung tablets in the near future.

The app is compatible with Samsung's multi-window multitasking feature, which lets you use two apps side-by-side, and includes an updated homescreen widget. Users...

ExtraTorrent Threatens Legal Action Over Police-Ordered Domain Seizure

by Andy

Yesterday it became apparent that the newly-founded Intellectual Property Crime Unit of the City of London Police had deepened its campaign against some of the world’s largest torrent sites.

The unit has been in operation for some time, but until this week the only immediate signs of its existence were the threatening letters sent out to sites a few months ago. Now the unit is sending letters to domain registrars asking them to suspend the domains of sites that the police – and their Hollywood and music industry partners – say are copyright-infringing criminal organizations.

“Say” is the key word here. There appears to be no court orders and no due process, something that was condemned yesterday by EasyDNS, a registrar approached by the police to suspend the domain of meta-search engine TorrentPond. The Canada-based company refused to do so and published the letter from the police instead.

For half a dozen sites it was already too late. ExtraTorrent, SumoTorrent, MisterTorrent and MP3 sites emp3world.com, full-albums.net and maxalbums.com, all had action taken against their domains this week. However, at least one will be fighting back.

At the start of 2013 ExtraTorrent was the 5th largest torrent site in the world so the fact that the police decided to target the site is significant. Its owners are annoyed to say the least, particularly with PDR Ltd (Public Domain Registry), the registrar that suspended ExtraTorrent’s .com domain and also those belonging to the previously mentioned MP3 sites.

extratorrent“After contacting PDR [after the suspension] they kept giving us funny replies but finally gave us a copy of the PDF file sent by the London Police,” ExtraTorrent told TorrentFreak.

“This was even more funny than the rest of the communications we had with PDR Ltd because it turned out that the suspension was solely and willfully under the discretion of the registrar and with no legal basis.”

ExtraTorrent says that they view the police correspondence, which suggested ways in which a website could be in breach of the registrar’s own ToS, as “guidance” to PDR Ltd on how to suspend a website domain in the absence of any due process.

“PDR Ltd didn’t even think of spending more time on understanding the content of the email sent by London Police. Basically they just got scared and did what was asked of them even with no legal implications indicated by the sender. The police were dictating to registrars what to do and how to do it their way,” ExtraTorrent explains.

ExtraTorrent remains operational at ExtraTorrent.cc but the site believes that it should fight back in order to regain control over its .com domain.

“We are going to fight this action legally if needed,” the site concludes.

After the news of the suspensions spread yesterday much of the criticism transcended the issues of copyright infringement or whether or not any of the sites had committed any offenses as claimed by the police. The general consensus among critics is that if sites are indeed guilty of a crime then it should be a court’s responsibility to order action to be taken.

TorrentFreak spoke with City of London Police yesterday and asked if it was normal to take this kind of action without court orders. We were informed that more information would be made available in the coming weeks.

It goes without saying that domain names and domain name servers are a crucial part of what makes the Internet tick. Little surprise then that there are concerns when copyright holders with police backing decide to meddle with them without the expected formalities.

As pointed out by EasyDNS, first they came for the file-sharing websites….

Encrypted Cloud Service Tresorit Unveils New Desktop and Mobile Apps

by Alan Henry

Encrypted Cloud Service Tresorit Unveils New Desktop and Mobile Apps

Android/OS X/Windows: Tresorit is one of our favorite privacy-protecting cloud storage services. They encrypt your data, protect your privacy, and have even challenged hackers to break their security so they can improve it. Now they've unveiled new apps for OS X and Android, and updated their Windows app as well.

The new apps still give you access to all of your cloud hosted files, and they still encrypt and decrypt them on demand—nothing leaves your computer without being encrypted first, and if you download anything new, it's decrypted when it gets to you, not on Tresorit's servers. This way not even Tresorit knows what you're storing—all of the keys are stored locally on your Mac, Windows PC, or Android device. They even make sharing those encrypted files easy, and give you control over the permissions each person you've shared a file with has—you can grant one person rights to edit an encrypted document, for example, while someone else can only view it. You can even stop those people from re-sharing the document, or revoke their permissions in a couple of clicks.

You can grab the new apps on their download page or sign up for an account at the link below. If you have an iOS device, Windows Phone, or are a Linux user, hang tight—Tresorit says they're working on apps for you next. If you're interested in any of those platforms, you can sign up on their site to register your interest—they'll work on the most popular pick next.

Oreo-breaded deep-fried cookie ice-cream

by Cory Doctorow

Behold! Dudefood's oreo-breaded deep-fried ice-cream, produced by de-cremeing a bunch of oreo-style cookies, pulverizing their carapaces, mashing the creme in with cookies-and-cream ice-cream, emballing the adulterated ice-cream, rolling the balls in the powdered husks, and deep frying the lot.

I wasn’t sure how well the Oreo cookie filling would work as part of a breading so I went through a package of cookies removing the filling from each cookie. Don’t worry though, because I didn’t let it go to waste. Instead, I mixed the cookie filling right into the ice cream! Yep, Cookies and Cream ice cream, mixed with Oreo cookie filling breaded in Oreo cookies!

One pint ended up being enough for five pretty decently sized balls of ice cream and after those sat in my freezer for about 30 minutes — mixed with the Oreo filling of course — I dipped each one in an egg wash and then rolled them around in crushed up Oreo cookies before placing them back in the freezer for another ten minutes or so. Then, just to make sure the breading was thick enough, I dipped each ice cream ball in the egg wash once again and rolled them in the crushed up Oreos a second time before putting them back in the freezer.

After 30 minutes my ice cream was finally ready for the deep fryer so I dropped each ball of ice cream in the 375° oil for about ten seconds, snapped a few photos and then started to eat! This is one of those times when I wish I owned a restaurant or a food truck or something just so you guys could actually taste the stuff I make because just saying over and over how great it is doesn’t do it any justice. This Oreo Cookie Breaded Deep Fried Ice Cream was good!

An undercover cop from the Riverside Sheriff's Department pressured a teen with autism, Tourette Syndrome, and bipolar syndrome to buy a tiny amount of pot for him, then arrested him and got him expelled from school. What a shameful thing to do.

The ordeal began on the first day of school last fall. The family had just moved to a new neighborhood and their son began his senior year at a new school, Chaparral High, in the Temecula Valley Unified School District. Their son rarely socialized, so his mom was thrilled when he announced that he had made a new friend in art class on the first day of school.

"We were so excited. I told him he should ask his friend to come over for pizza and play video games," says Catherine Snodgrass, "but his new friend always had an excuse."

His new friend, who went under the name of Daniel Briggs, was known as "Deputy Dan" to many students because it was so apparent to them that he was an undercover officer. However, to their son, whose disabilities make it hard for him to gauge social cues, Dan was his only real friend.

Dan reportedly sent 60 text messages to their son begging for drugs. According to his parents, the pressure to buy drugs was too much for the autistic teen who began physically harming himself.

When to Buy Avocados and How to Store Them for Game Day Guacamole

by Melanie Pinola

When to Buy Avocados and How to Store Them for Game Day Guacamole

Guacamole is one of the easiest and tastiest dishes you can make, and especially great for entertaining a crowd. This guide from Serious Eats tells us how to make sure avocados are perfectly ripe the day you want to turn them into guacamole.

Avocadoes are pretty tricky when it comes to ripeness. You don't want them underripe and you don't want the dreaded brown spots and streaks either. Serious Eats says hard avocados will ripen between 3 to 5 days if stored in a brown paper bag, 2 to 3 days if you add a banana to the bag. But then once ripened, you only have about 2 days in room temperature or around 5 days in the fridge until the avocados start turning brown. So...if you want perfect avocados for a Sunday night game:

Buy them the Monday before, ripen them at room temperature in a brown paper bag and refrigerate them as soon as they soften.

If for some reason a bowl of guacamole doesn't get devoured entirely, preserve the rest of the batch with chunks of red onion on top of it.

Hit up the link below for everything you might want to know about guacamole and avocados.

Lawsuit filed against UN claims it caused deadly cholera in Haiti, covered it up

by Xeni Jardin
NBC News: "Survivors and family members of nearly 700,000 Haitians who have contracted cholera are suing the United Nations for billions of dollars, accusing the U.N. of covering up its role in starting the worst outbreak of the deadly disease in modern history." The suit will be filed in Manhattan federal court today "despite the U.N.’s longstanding immunity to all legal claims of wrongdoing."

Recover Tons of Wasted Disk Space with the New Windows Update Cleanup

Recover Tons of Wasted Disk Space with the New Windows Update Cleanup

Windows: Microsoft has released a Windows 7 update that adds a new option in the Disk Cleanup tool called Windows Update Cleanup. With it, you can free up several gigabytes of hard drive space from the bloated Windows Updates folder.

Windows Updates can be terrible space hogs. Windows saves every security update and hotfix—even if they're superseded by new updates—in the WinSxS directory. You can't just manually delete everything in that folder, because some files are needed just in case a system file gets corrupted or you need to roll back a Windows Update.

So that's where this new Windows Update comes in. Released yesterday for Windows 7 SP1 machines, KB 2852386 adds the ability to cleanup all the obsolete updates in the WinSxS folder. It's a "recommended" update but not "critical," so you might not have installed it yet. You can either do a Windows Update to download it or head to the Knowledge Base article to grab it from there. (Note: Windows Update Cleanup is included in Windows 8.1.)

Once you have it installed, run Disk Cleanup and click the "Clean up system files" button to find the new Windows Update Cleanup option. Note that running this cleanup will prevent you from uninstalling any updates you have currently applied, but you can manually download and install previous update versions if you ever need to rollback.

Hit up TechNet below for more details, including a way to automate this process.
