British town will introduce fleet of driverless cars by 2015

by Rich McCormick

The British town of Milton Keynes will get a fleet of 20 driverless cars by 2015, the UK's business secretary Vince Cable has said. The "pods" will carry up to two people, travel along special pathways, and reach a top speed of 12 miles per hour (19 km/h). In 2017, the project — costing £1.5 million ($2.4 million) — will be expanded as the fleet rises to 100 self-driving pods. The plan is for these vehicles will share pathways with pedestrians and use sensors to avoid collisions.

The UK government has yet to reveal the specifications for the vehicles, but a mock-up video shows that passengers will be able to book them with a smartphone app, and that the pods themselves will be equipped with a screen that allows access to the...

How to disable SMS messages in Hangouts

by Alex Dobie

Hangouts SMS option

Don't want your text messages going to Google Hangouts? There's an easy way to go back to your old Messaging app

As of version 2.0, the Google Hangouts app for Android can handle SMS messages as well as regular instant messages. When you start it up for the first time you'll be asked if you want to use Hangouts for SMS or not. Tap yes and your existing messages are imported into the app, and you'll receive future SMS notifications through Hangouts instead of your preloaded SMS app. Tap "Maybe later" and you'll continue using your preloaded Messaging app.

But what if you've tried it and want out? Well, turns out there's a simple way to disable SMS in Hangouts and go back to using the built-in app.

The Galaxy Note 3 Experience app shows you what using a Note is all about

by Andrew Martonik

Galaxy Note 3 Experience

Get a deeper look into the many features of Samsung's latest Note

Ever been curious about using a Note device, but never given one a try? Well Samsung is hoping that an app in the Play Store called the Galaxy Note 3 Experience will help you discover all of its great features. You get a chance to watch some promo videos, and live interactive full-screen tutorials showing how features work on the Note 3 on whatever device you currently use.

Things like Air Command, Multi Window, Scrapbook and more are all on display, and they actually look pretty good considering that everything is just running in an app. You can also see how interactions work between the Galaxy Note 3 and the Galaxy Gear, although that implementation is a little clunky to our eyes.

The app also does you some good even if you already have made the choice to go with a Note 3. If you install it on your device, you'll get tutorials on all of the great features at your disposal that you may not have discovered on your own. If you're at all curious about the Note 3, you may want to take a look.

Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) slams Philippines, may be most powerful typhoon to ever hit land

by Xeni Jardin

Typhoon Haiyan approaching the Philippines (13:00 UTC 07/11/2011). Image captured by the geostationary satellites of the Japan Meteorological Agency and EUMETSAT.

The powerful storm named Super Typhoon Haiyan (or Super Typhoon Yolanda, as it is referred to within the Philippines) hit the central islands of the Philippines on Friday, with reported wind speeds of 190 to 195 miles per hour at landfall. For comparison, a commercial airplane takes off at speeds in the range of 160mph.

Haiyan is reported to be the strongest typhoon in the world in 2013, and may be the most powerful recorded tropical cyclone to ever hit land.

Millions of people fled for safer ground and took refuge in storm shelters in the Philippines' central islands, as the typhoon struck. At the time of this post, only one reported death: a woman on the island of Cebu was crushed to death by a tree that fell, according to the Philippine Information Agency.

Debris float on a flooded road as strong winds and rain continue to batter buildings after Typhoon Haiyan hit Tacloban city, Leyte province in this still image from video November 8, 2013. REUTERS.

Meteorologist Jeff Masters at Weather Underground predicts "extreme damage" in the Philippines: "Wind damage in Guiuan (population 47,000) must have been catastrophic, perhaps the greatest wind damage any city on Earth has endured from a tropical cyclone in the past century."

From Reuters:

Haiyan, a category-5 storm, lashed the islands of Leyte and Samar with 5-6 meter (15-19 ft) waves as it headed toward densely populated central and southern Philippines, including the resort island of Boracay and other holiday destinations. Authorities warned more than 12 million people were at risk, including residents of the Philippines' second-largest city Cebu, home to around 2.5 million people, and areas still reeling from a deadly 2011 storm and a 7.1-magnitude quake last month.

Dr. Jeff Masters, at Weather Underground:

Super Typhoon Haiyan has made landfall. According to PAGASA, Haiyan came ashore at 4:40 am local time (20:40 UTC) November 7, 2013 near Guiuan, on the Philippine island of Samar. Fourty minutes before landfall, Guiuan reported sustained 10-minute average winds of 96 mph, with a pressure of 977 mb. Contact has since been lost with the city. Three hours before landfall, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) assessed Haiyan’s sustained winds at 195 mph, gusting to 235 mph, making it the 4th strongest tropical cyclone in world history. Satellite loops show that Haiyan weakened only slightly, if at all, in the two hours after JTWC’s advisory, so the super typhoon likely made landfall with winds near 195 mph. The next JTWC intensity estimate, for 00Z UTC November 8, about three hours after landfall, put the top winds at 185 mph. Averaging together these estimates gives a strength of 190 mph an hour after landfall. Thus, Haiyan had winds of 190 - 195 mph at landfall, making it the strongest tropical cyclone on record to make landfall in world history. The previous record was held by the Atlantic's Hurricane Camille of 1969, which made landfall in Mississippi with 190 mph winds.

At the time of this blog post, Super Typhoon Haiyan/Yolanda has already made five landfalls, according to the Philippines national weather bureau PAGASA.

From philstar.com:

PAGASA reported that the super typhoon slammed into land for the third time over Daanbantayan town in Cebu at around 9:40 a.m. The weather disturbance, considered the world's strongest this year, initially made landfall in Guiuan, Samar. Three hours later, the super typhoon hit land over Tolosa town in Leyte. PAGASA said the superhowler is expected a fourth landfall over Negros Occidental.

On Thursday night, before the storm made landfall, President Benigno Aquino III made a televised statement in which he described the typhoon as "a serious threat." From the Philippine Information Agency:

Relief goods have been prepositioned in most of the areas that may be affected. To those who have not received relief goods, please be patient. Rest assured the relief goods will come soonest.

The Best Music Download Stores You're Not Using (but Should)

by Alan Henry

The Best Music Download Stores You're Not Using (but Should)

Streaming music is great, but you've probably heard songs you just have to own, or you an artist or band you'd like to support by purchasing their music. Doing so on the big stores is cheap and easy, but there's a world of smaller music stores with interesting music you should check out too. Let's take a look.

Sure, there's massive selection and great deals to be had at the big names like iTunes, Amazon MP3, and Google Play Music. Those stores are great, and we're not trying to convince you otherwise. However, just like when we discussed some underrated streaming music services to try, trying something new doesn't have to replace something you already love. There's always room for more.

Remember: it really doesn't matter where you buy your music—you'll be able to play it everywhere. A lot of the small, independent stores are worth exploring, if only because they're the only places you'll find some great, self-promoted artists and highly underrated music. You'll probably search the big stores for your new and interesting finds first, but if you don't find them there, you'll probably will on one of these sites.

Bandcamp

The Best Music Download Stores You're Not Using (but Should)

You've probably been to Bandcamp, even if you don't remember going. If you follow a musician on Twitter or Facebook that promotes themselves, they probably have a Bandcamp site where you can listen to their music, buy albums, and download tracks. The platform makes it remarkably easy for musicians to host albums and post their songs for sale or free download, and for listeners to play entire tracks, make quick track-by-track purchases, or download whole albums at once.

Bandcamp is free to join for musicians and for fans. If you're a fan of independent artists, video game soundtracks, and other self-promoted small bands, DJs, and other artists, it's a great place to explore. The front page is a good place to get started, with popular tracks and albums right there to check out, and you can browse by genre or new releases at the bottom of the page. Even though Bandcamp has a rep for indie tunes and video game tracks, make no mistake—there's plenty of folk, jazz, metal, hip-hop, experimental, and more available too.

Beatport

The Best Music Download Stores You're Not Using (but Should)

If you love electronic music, Beatport is the place for you. It's packed with downloads, mixes, and full sets from your favorite headliners or independent DJs looking to make a name for themselves. A quick glance at the charts on the right side of the page will clue you in to what's popular, but the catalog is deep and rich. Beatport is also home to a number of exclusive albums and downloads you won't find elsewhere.

Don't underestimate the community at Beatport either—the site boasts over 120,000 artists, remixers, DJs, and musicians, and close to a million tracks. There's a massive forum and community of users behind the site as well, and there are even charts and music awards hosted by the site to encourage users to get involved, vote for their picks, and discover new tracks.

CDBaby

The Best Music Download Stores You're Not Using (but Should)

CDBaby has been around for a long time. It's earned a lot of praise from people who prefer high quality lossless formats because they offer all of their music as standard mp3s, or as 320kpbs mp3s or FLAC files. The site is home to musicians both large and small, independent and signed. Many of them use CDBaby as a platform to then syndicate their music to other larger stores, like iTunes, Amazon, and Google Play (but you can still get them at CDBaby directly and cut out the middleman).

CDBaby may be independent, but don't think of it as a small service. They're host to over 300,000 artists and 3 million tracks available on the site. They run a music discovery podcast to help you find new artists to enjoy, and have their own charts for popular artists, new bands, and picks from the staff. Since the site is large, you can find almost any type of music at CDBaby, from jazz and funk to metal and punk and everything in between. The site also has curated collections by featured artists, discounted tracks, and more.

Jamendo

The Best Music Download Stores You're Not Using (but Should)

Jamendo differs from a number of other music stores because it's free and open to any musician who wants to sign up. Everyone who does agrees to post their music under a Creative Commons license, which means in many cases it can be reused and remixed freely, as long as you provide attribution to the original artist. If you find a musician you love, you can donate to support the artist. This gives listeners the opportunity to download lots of great music—usually for free—while the artist still gets exposure and makes money on licensing and other commercial uses of their music via Creative Commons.

Jamendo isn't horribly large site by comparison to many of the others; they host over 30,000 artists from 120 countries, and have over 400,000 tracks available to listen to and download. Jamendo also features internet radio, and There are even mobile apps if you're a fan and want to take your tracks or Jamendo's streaming music on the go with you. Listening, downloading, and streaming are all free, and the songs you get are mp3s or OGG files.

eMusic

The Best Music Download Stores You're Not Using (but Should)

eMusic has been kicking around for a long time. While it's popular for its subscription service, it also has great prices on downloadable high quality, DRM-free mp3s from a variety of artists. If you discover something you like, you can buy it anytime you want, subscription or no subscription. The service has 12 million tracks from both independent and major labels, as well as songs available through other services, like CDBaby.

Since eMusic's catalog relied heavily on independent musicians and labels in its early days, the site has a bit of a reputation for being well stocked with indie rock, metal, punk, acoustic, and alt-rock. That's a rep well deserved, since there's definitely a large selection of those genres. However, it also has agreements with major labels, meaning you should be able to find music from artists that you know and love on the site as well, in many cases at really good prices.

SoundCloud

The Best Music Download Stores You're Not Using (but Should)

While not a traditional music store, SoundCloud is a massive music social network and a great place to find advance releases, free downloads, and whole sets and remixes from new artists, DJs, and small bands. Many artists post their songs to SoundCloud for free just for kicks, and others usually point you to the best place to download and support them in the process. Streaming is completely free, and you can search, browse, and explore musicians and artists without ever getting tired of what you hear. It's also huge, packing over 20 million users and millions of original songs, remixes, podcasts, spoken word tracks, and more, all available to listen to and download.

Of course, these are just a few smaller music stores and services offering great music for sale in a variety of formats and genres just under the surface of the big boys. In some cases, shopping with the smaller names is a matter of finding great new music from musicians who promote themselves and can't afford to list their music on the big stores. In other cases, it's about diving deep into specific genres and styles of music and a community of listeners that love them.

Beyond the above, and beyond streaming music services, there are plenty of other ways to boost your music library without spending much (or any) money. The web is full of great music and great deals on music that still give you a way to support the artists and musicians you love—you just have to know where to look.

NYT endorses brutal, secret, Internet-destroying corporatist TPP trade-deal; write to your lawmaker to fight it

by Cory Doctorow

The New York Times has endorsed the Trans-Pacific Partnership; a trade deal negotiated in utmost secrecy, without public participation, whose text is still not public. From leaks, we know that TPP wasn't just anti-democratic in its process -- it also contains numerous anti-democratic provisions that allow private offshore companies to overturn domestic law, especially laws that allow for free speech and privacy online. TPP is slated for fast-tracking through Congress, minimizing any scrutiny of a deal negotiated behind closed doors before it is turned into law. From what we've seen of TPP, it recapitulates all the worst elements of ACTA and then some. The Electronic Frontier Foundation needs you to write to your lawmaker demanding full and public debate on TPP.

The paper's statement emphasizes how the Obama administration strives to make TPP's policies “an example for the rest of the world to follow.” But if that's the case, then it's all the more important that the agreement be published immediately. Such a significant body of international law regulating digital policy must not be negotiated without proper, informed public debate. The secrecy of the process itself ensures that only some private interests will be represented at the expense of others. In addition, the U.S. Trade Representative's history of pushing forth extreme copyright enforcement policies through other trade agreements gives little assurance that users' rights will be considered in the TPP.

Trade representatives are working to finalize TPP negotiations by the end of the year. Negotiators are scheduled to meet in Salt Lake City next week to negotiate outstanding issues in this agreement, including provisions on liability for Internet Service Providers and anti-circumvention measures over DRM. Following that, trade delegates are seeking to finalize and sign this agreement in December in a ministerial meeting in Singapore.

It's unfortunate that news outlets are giving little coverage to TPP, when media attention could have a major impact on how the US and the other 11 nations draft digital policy. But public media coverage is precisely the sort of accountability that official secrecy thwarts. Instead of endorsing an agreement the public can't read, a responsible paper would condemn the secrecy involved. And if the Times has seen the text and knows what's contained in the TPP, then they have a responsibility to publish the text immediately and expose the US government's back room dealings.

Kit Harington Set For Spooks Film

Kit Harington Set For Spooks Film

Jennifer Ehle and show veteran Peter Firth to co-star

Kit Harington, jennifer ehle zero dark thirty

It’s been a couple of years since Spooks (known to American audiences as MI-5) went off the air. The spies are set to return, this time on the big screen, with word that Kit Harington, Jennifer Ehle and Peter Firth are all signed up to star in Spooks: The Greater Good.

Written by show veterans Jonathan Brackley and Sam Vincent, and overseen by originating director Bharat Nalluri, the film will see heroes old and new take over a rundown hotel in the South of France and deal with all sorts of comic characters as they…

Kidding! In fact, agent Will Crombie (Harington), a former protégé of Firth’s Harry Pearce, is investigating how a terrorist escaped from custody during a routine handover against the ticking clock of an imminent terror attack on London. Ehle is on as Dame Geraldine Maltby, the head of MI5. While we're sure Harington will be a draw for some, we’re particularly glad to see Harry back – it wouldn’t be Spooks without him.

"With Spooks: The Greater Good we’ve set out to make a gripping, cinematic, contemporary spy thriller – one that builds on the history of the show and its legacy of questioning the world around us, but which also delivers as a stand-alone film for a new, global audience," says Shine Pictures’ Stephen Garrett. Altitude film is offering the rights at the American Film Market and shooting is set for early next year.

Chrome On Windows To Start Rejecting Extensions From Outside The Chrome Web Store In January

by Frederic Lardinois
google-chrome-cookies

Starting in January, Google's Chrome browser will not allow you to install extensions that aren't hosted in Google's own Chrome Web Store.

While Google had recently increased its security measures for keeping malicious extensions out of Chrome by adding additional warnings and disabling silent extension installs, the team clearly felt that it had to go a step further to keep Windows machines safe. The leading cause of complaints from its Windows users, Google says, is still due to malicious extensions that override browser settings and change the user experience in unexpected (and undesired) ways. Given that these malicious extensions are virtually always hosted outside of the Chrome Web Store, the team has decided to simply shut down the ability to install extensions from third-party sites.

Users will still be able to do local installs during development and admins can use their Enterprise policy settings to allow their users to pre-install and allow certain extensions. This move also won't affect Chrome Apps.

For developers who need to migrate to the Web Store now, this move should be pretty straightforward. Most Chrome extension developers are probably using the store already anyway, so this shouldn't be too hard for most of them. The one thing they do have to do, though, is pay a $5 fee to sign up.

30 Fabulous Photos of Pencils

by Darren Rowse

By Rilind Hoxha

It is going to be a rainy weekend where I live and I’m looking for a photographic project to amuse myself with.

One challenge I love setting myself on such weekends when I’m trapped inside is to take an everyday item and to photograph it. Take the humble Pencil. It is something that most households would have… particularly those of us with kids. We probably see them every day – so why not make it the focus of your attention for the weekend.

Here’s how 30 other photographers have tackled the challenge of photographing pencils!

Play this: 'Rayman Fiesta Run' is mobile platforming perfection

by Andrew Webster

There's a bottomless supply of endless runners on mobile devices, but few games you would call a real platformer. Last year's Rayman Jungle Run was one of those rare few, and now it has a sequel: the salsa-tinged Rayman Fiesta Run. The new game doesn't mess with the formula too much, as your character will still run automatically, leaving you to focus on jumping and punching to avoid obstacles and collect all kinds of goodies.

Unlike mobile hits like Canabalt or Robot Unicorn Attack, Rayman isn't an endless game, but instead consists of a series of levels much like in a classic platforming adventure. The stages are short enough that you can beat several in just a few minutes, and their playful design means you won't hate having to...

by Ben Popper

Twitter is set to hold its initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange this morning. The company has priced its stock at $26 a share. This will allow it to raise $1.8 billion dollars and give it a valuation of roughly $14 billion, although that could rise or fall depending on where the share price ends the day.

Marvel creating four superhero shows exclusively for Netflix, premiering in 2015

by Jacob Kastrenakes

Marvel is creating four live-action superhero series and an Avengers-style special event that will all air exclusively on Netflix, beginning in 2015. The first of the TV series will focus on Daredevil, while the following series will star Jessica Jones, Iron Fist, and Luke Cage. At least 13 episodes of each series will be produced, and — like all good Marvel series — they'll eventually come together for a special event. For Netflix, that event will be a mini-series called The Defenders, though there's no word on just how long it'll run.

"This serialized epic expands the narrative possibilities of on-demand television and gives fans the flexibility to immerse themselves how and when they want in what's sure to be a thrilling and...

Microsoft finally takes on Google Docs with real-time editing in Office Web Apps

by Tom Warren

Microsoft’s range of Office Web Apps are finally getting real-time editing today. Word, PowerPoint, and Excel are all being updated with the ability to support co-authoring that’s similar to Google Docs. While Office Web Apps has supported the editing and sharing of documents, it lacked the real-time element that’s essential for collaborative editing amongst groups of users. Microsoft promised the support back in June, and the improvements now place the company’s offerings in a position to compete with Google Docs fully.

Like Google Docs, co-authors will be shown in the document with a different colored cursor alongside a list of users currently editing a file. Changes will be automatically saved on the web, and even Office...

Android is generating $2 billion a year… for Microsoft

by Brad Reed
Microsoft Android Patent LicensesMicrosoft would love to sell more Windows Phones but you get the feeling that it doesn't mind seeing Android do well either, especially if it means billions of dollars in free money every year. Per Business Insider, Nomura analyst Rick Sherlund estimates in a new research note that Microsoft makes a whopping $2 billion a year in revenue every year simply from collecting patent royalties from Android vendors. Sherlund says that Microsoft's margin on Android-related patent royalties is around 95%, which means that the company's annual Android haul is almost pure profit. Sherlund goes on to say that Microsoft is using its Android cash to cover up massive losses that it takes from its Xbox division, which he says actually loses Microsoft $2 billion per year.

YouTube Starts Rolling Out Its New Commenting System Based On Google+

by Frederic Lardinois
youtube-google-plus-tran

In September, YouTube announced that it would soon roll out a new commenting system powered by Google+. After testing it on channel discussion tabs for a few weeks, it's now starting to roll it out to all videos on the site.

Given the size of YouTube, this roll-out will start this week, but it will take some time before it is fully effective. Until then, you may see both systems on the site, depending on which video you are watching.

It's no secret that YouTube comments aren't exactly a hotbed for smart conversations, so the company hopes that this change will increase the quality of comments by putting the emphasis on conversations and not on one-off comments. The idea here, YouTube says, is to ensure that “YouTube comments will become conversations that matter to you.”

Instead of organizing comments by chronology, YouTube will now rank them by relevancy, taking into account who wrote a comment, +1s, the number of replies and other signals to surface the best comments. Updates from the video's creator or comment threads they participate in, as well as updates from people in your Google+ circles, will also rank highly. Users who prefer the old way can still switch from the “Top Comments” view to “Newest First.”

Thanks to this Google+ integration, comments can now be public or private. So if you just want to talk about a video with people in your Google+ circles, you can now do that.

To comment, YouTube users have to connect their accounts to a Google+ page or profile, however. By allowing users to connect their accounts to Google+ pages, they'll still be able to use the service without using their real names, though for the majority of users, that's probably an extra step they won't take. In total, though, four out of five people have already connected their YouTube channels to their Google+ accounts, Google tells me.

For video creators, the Google+ commenting system introduces better ways to moderate comments. They can now block certain words, auto-approve comments from certain fans (based on the circles they are in) and still review comments before they are posted.

The Raid 2: Berandal Teaser Is Here!

The Raid 2: Berandal Teaser Is Here!

Iko Uwais punches his weight in Gareth Evans' sequel

An hour and a half earlier than promised due to overwhelming demand, the teaser trailer for Gareth Evans' The Raid 2: Berandal - arguably the most anticipated action movie of next year - is now online, thanks to the lovely chaps at TwitchFilm, and it rocks.

It's a true teaser, giving us a basic and very intriguing set-up. Iko Uwais' supercop, Rama, survivor of The Raid, is now sitting in a prison cell. How he got there, or why, remains a mystery, but he certainly doesn't look happy about it - as he demonstrates in no uncertain terms by punching the crap out of a silhouette on the wall.

As he does so, we get brief flashes of just some of the colourful characters that Rama will meet, greet and in all likelihood grind into meat on his murky journey into the underbelly of the Indonesian crime scene. Some - like Cecep Rahman's Assassin or Julie Estelle's Hammer Girl - are new faces. Others, like Tegar Satrya's Bowo and Yayan Ruhian, we've seen before, although, just to make it interesting, Ruhian - so memorable as Mad Dog in The Raid - is a new character here, the gray-haired enforcer Prakoso.{Raid 2: Berandal Stills}

Finishing off with brief shots that hint at the film's bloody mayhem and larger scale (there's a hint of a car chase, and a setpiece in an Indonesian mall), it's a mouthwatering taste of a film that has pretty big shoes to fill. Enjoy.

The Raid 2: Berandal is out in 2014.

Mute.fm Automatically Mutes Your Music When You Play a Video

by Alan Henry

Windows: Mute.fm is a Windows utility that automatically lowers the volume and pauses your music when you start watching a web video or video file on your computer. When the show's over, it'll un-pause your music and bring the volume back up. Best of all, it works with a variety of music players.

Mute.fm models itself after the way Windows 7 and 8 can automatically lower the volume of noisy apps in the background when your get a VoIP call. The app, once installed, runs quietly in the background. When you fire up your favorite music player—whether it's iTunes, foobar2000, Winamp, Pandora, Spotify, or a number of others, the tool knows you're listening to music. When another app appears and starts playing more audio, like a video player, it will lower the volume and mute the background music player so you can watch your video without music in the background. If it's a supported music player, it'll even pause the music for you. Then, when you've finished the video, it'll wait a few seconds and then raise the volume again.

I tried the app out and it works—it was a little finicky about which apps were background and which weren't, but once I told it which was my background music app, it was able to mute it when I played something else without issue. If your music player isn't one of the supported ones, you can still tell Mute.fm which app it is yourself and it'll remember, or use its built-in editor to give the utility specific commands to pause that application. If you listen to a lot of streaming music via the web, it even has a built-in Chromium-based browser you can use so you get the benefit of the auto-muting (and you can play your streaming tunes like a desktop app, without using your browser.)

Hit the link below to give it a try, or head over to the Mute.fm FAQ to read more about it.

Vodafone Drops Play Store Carrier Billing In The UK, Germany, Italy, And Spain, No Explanation Offered

by Jeremiah Rice

vodaphone logoNormally we're pretty pleased when we can report that a new country or carrier has enabled the option for carrier billing in the Google Play Store, allowing customers to charge app and media purchases directly to their phone bill. But for some reason, European carrier Vodafone seems to have dropped the option entirely. Vodafone has disappeared from the list of carrier billing partners on Google's Play Store support page, and we've confirmed the loss of capability from individual users in the UK, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

Apple hides a Patriot-Act-busting "warrant canary" in its transparency report

by Cory Doctorow
The Patriot Act provides for secret warrants to spy on ISPs' customers. These "Section 215" warrants come with gag orders that mean that the company can't disclose their existence. This lack of transparency is ripe for abuse and is bad for ISPs' business. Apple is fighting back with a "warrant canary": they've published a transparency report (PDF) that states "Apple has never received an order under Section 215 of the USA Patriot Act. We would expect to challenge an order if served on us." If they are served with a 215 order in future, their next transparency report will drop this language, omitting any mention of 215, and keen-eyed watchers will know that they've been subjected to a secret order. I proposed a more ambitious version of this in September, though I was hardly the first person to suggest it. Good for Apple for using it.

Your Google+ profile picture will soon be paired with your phone number

by Andrew Martonik

KitKat Dialer

System to go into effect early 2014, and you're already opted in by default

The dialer in Android 4.4 KitKat has a new look and new search features, but come 2014 it will also have a better database of photos from individuals that you call. Although a specific date has yet to be given, Google plans at some point in "early 2014" to flip the switch on pairing up people's verified phone numbers with their Google+ profile photos.

This means that any time you call someone after verifying your phone number with Google, the person on the other end will see your Google+ profile picture on their incoming call screen. Google says this will be useful for when you meet someone but have yet to add them to your contacts and associate an image with them, which we can see the benefit of.

Currently the portion of your Google account settings that handles phone numbers simply has a list of "verified" numbers associated with your account, and it seems as though they're opted into this new system by default. The tooltip reads "help people who have your phone number find you on Google services and connect with you," and this function is currently used for things like Hangouts.

Dixons Group announces Advent Vega Tegra Note tablet, available November 15

by Richard Devine

Android Central

Awkward name hides the NVIDIA Tegra Note, available for £179.99 with pre-orders available November 7

A couple of months back NVIDIA announced the Tegra Note tablet platform, a reference for Tegra 4 tablets to be sold through global partners and with updates handled by NVIDIA themselves. The UK has now seen the device for the first time, and will be sold from November 15 by the Dixons Group of stores, primarily Currys and PCWorld, and will cost a respectible £179.99.

For that, you're getting a Tegra 4 SoC under the hood, with a 1280x800 display, 5MP rear camera, 16GB of on-board storage and plain old vanilla Android, which Dixons is currently listing as Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. And, as the Note name implies, this thing comes with a stylus with bundled applications.

This could be a great gift with the holiday season coming up, or, you know, a gift to yourself, and at a price which puts it right in there with the Amazon Kindle Fire HD and the Google Nexus 7. This look like a tablet you could get behind?

LG G Pad 8.3 review

by Anndrew Vacca

LG G Pad 8.3.

At $349, LG's first major foray into the Android tablet market (we'll forgive them for that 3D thing in 2011) is truly something to behold

In the years since its relatively quiet into the world of Android, LG has stuck to a strategy that’s relatively familiar in the mobile market: throw products against the wall and see which ones stick. Sound familiar? It’s an approach popularized by LG’s main competitor, Samsung, which has been churning out Galaxies of countless sizes over the past few years in the hope that it finally hits consumers’ sweet spots.

But where LG differs from Samsung is in its execution. Rather than flood the market with Optimii of various sizes and shapes, LG appears to have studied which products work, and which ones don't.

The most recent result of all this is the LG G Pad 8.3, a thrilling, near-perfect device that stands out even in an Android tablet market that has finally grown into its own skin. It’s a product of time, effort, and attention to detail that proves just how well LG’s strategy is paying off. This is the Galaxy Tab Samsung hasn't quite noticed consumers want.

Running a stop sign results in multiple police-ordered anal probes

by Mark Frauenfelder
Good times in New Mexico, courtesy a police department high on the war on drugs:

Eckert's attorney, Shannon Kennedy, said in an interview with KOB that after law enforcement asked him to step out of the vehicle, he appeared to be clenching his buttocks. Law enforcement thought that was probable cause to suspect that Eckert was hiding narcotics in his anal cavity. While officers detained Eckert, they secured a search warrant from a judge that allowed for an anal cavity search.

The lawsuit claims that Deming Police tried taking Eckert to an emergency room in Deming, but a doctor there refused to perform the anal cavity search citing it was "unethical."

But physicians at the Gila Regional Medical Center in Silver City agreed to perform the procedure and a few hours later, Eckert was admitted.

While there...

1. Eckert's abdominal area was x-rayed; no narcotics were found.

2. Doctors then performed an exam of Eckert's anus with their fingers; no narcotics were found.

3. Doctors performed a second exam of Eckert's anus with their fingers; no narcotics were found.

4. Doctors penetrated Eckert's anus to insert an enema. Eckert was forced to defecate in front of doctors and police officers. Eckert watched as doctors searched his stool. No narcotics were found.

5. Doctors penetrated Eckert's anus to insert an enema a second time. Eckert was forced to defecate in front of doctors and police officers. Eckert watched as doctors searched his stool. No narcotics were found.

6. Doctors penetrated Eckert's anus to insert an enema a third time. Eckert was forced to defecate in front of doctors and police officers. Eckert watched as doctors searched his stool. No narcotics were found.

7. Doctors then x-rayed Eckert again; no narcotics were found.

8. Doctors prepared Eckert for surgery, sedated him, and then performed a colonoscopy where a scope with a camera was inserted into Eckert's anus, rectum, colon, and large intestines. No narcotics were found.

Video: Nexus 5 teardown shows the phone’s surprising repairability

by Jacob Siegal
Google Nexus 5 TeardownWhen iFixit tore the iPad Air to pieces last week, the team quickly discovered that Apple's newest tablet was not built to be repaired at home. On the other hand, iFixit found that the Nexus 5 couldn't have been easier to pry open, foregoing the endless globs of glue that cemented the iPad Air shut, and sticking with mostly plastic clips to hold the smartphone together. The battery also used hardly any adhesive, giving do-it-yourself repairers a simple path to battery replacement. The only real repairability issue iFixit found on the Nexus 5 was the fusing of the LCD to the front glass. Overall, Google's latest handset netted an impressive repairability score of 8/10 from iFixit, thanks to the phone's "modular design," "standardized screws," and its use of "mild adhesive." The full video can be seen below.

Digg Gives Videos Prime Placement With New Digg Video Site

by Sarah Perez
Digg-video

Digg, a service devoted to helping users find and share the most interesting content around the web, has now more formally expanded into video, the company announced today. With the launch of Digg Video, Digg will break out the most popular video content found online, giving it its own high-level section on Digg.com. On the new site, you can browse trending videos, share videos to Facebook or Twitter, and, of course, Digg them.

The Digg Video page, like most of Digg.com, is fairly minimal. The hottest video at the moment is given a prominent position by itself. (“I have smoked crack cocaine” is there now, for example). That could really drive major views for the video that lands in that spot if all goes well. As you scroll down the page, other featured videos appear from a variety of categories.

Although Digg Video at launch doesn't offer any top-level navigation to filter videos by type, each video has a small tag indicating its category (e.g. politics, music, movies, animals, etc.). When clicked, this takes you to that tag's page on Digg.com where you can find other videos to watch and non-video stories to read.

In announcing the new service, the company explains that, since relaunching Digg two years ago, the “Video” tag has seen more traffic than any other tag on the Digg.com site, necessitating a move to better support the medium. The site's launch is also being sponsored by Squarespace, the Digg blog post notes. Like Sponsored posts on Digg.com's homepage, Squarespace gets a top spot for its sponsorship, with a native video ad called “How To Make A Beautiful Website Without Knowing Sh*t.” The placement is not the highest on the site, but just underneath, and clearly labeled as an ad.

Digg Video will make its way to the Digg mobile applications soon, the company also says, and will share news about the site on both Twitter and Tumblr. In the meantime, you can check out the new Digg Video domain itself, at digg.com/video. The Video link has also been added between “Home,” and “Reader” (Digg's Google Reader replacement) on the company homepage.

Streamnation 2.0 lets you easily share ripped movies with friends

by Ellis Hamburger

Streamnation (formerly Stream Nation) is one of the most comprehensive solutions we've tested for storing and streaming your photos and videos, and today, it gets a bit better. The service now lets you share movies and TV shows you've ripped to your computer (and then uploaded to the cloud) with friends. Streamnation 2.0's tentpole feature sounds a little too good to be true, but founder Jonathan Benassaya isn't worried. After navigating digital rights for years as the co-founder of music-streaming service Deezer, he couldn't be more confident about his new solution for sharing your content.

Android Gets Another Reseller: U.K. Startup Kazam Shows Off Seven Budget Droids For Europe

by Natasha Lomas

The Android OEM space has just got a little more crowded. U.K. smartphone startup Kazam, which is rebadging Chinese-made smartphones with a logo and adding a few after-sales extras to try and pull in the punters, has unveiled its initial line-up of seven devices, six months after being founded by a pair of former U.K. HTC execs.

The Kazam Trooper & Kazam Thunder ranges will launch “over the coming days and weeks on a regional basis to coincide with consumer availability”. Europe is the initial target for Kazam, which announced its attention to attack the smartphone space back in June.

The more mainstream focused Trooper range runs to five phones (the X3.5, X4.0, X4.5, X5.0 and X5.5 - with the numbers corresponding to screen size), and includes after sales support for help setting up the phone or diagnosing problems, via a Kazam Rescue support service which includes remote device access.

The smaller Thunder range (just the Q4.5, and the forthcoming Q5.0) is apparently targeting more techie buyers - offering higher specs and (presumably) less of a focus on after sales hand-holding.

The 3G Q4.5 has a 1.3GHz quad-core chip, 1GB of RAM and runs Android 4.2 Jelly Bean. It has a 4.5 inch FWVGA display - albeit that comes out at a less than impressive 218ppi resolution. So it's not exactly going to be competing with flagship Androids on screen quality. Expect it to undercut them on price, however.Q4.5 BLACK - with HOMESCREEN WITHOUT ICONS

On the question of how much Kazam will be flogging its rebadged Droids to consumers for, it said that's TBC and will vary by market. But it will be ‘disruptive', according to co-founder James Atkins. ”Our pricing strategy is focused on delivering value to people in each local region.  We are committed to disrupting the industry standard. Specific local pricing will be announced in line with consumer availability,” he said via email.

All Kazam devices include a year's screen replacement - meaning that butterfingered buyers can claim for one new screen over that period. All phones also include support for dual-SIM, a removable battery and expandable memory (via MicroSD card slots).

Kazam being founded by ex-HTC employees has a fitting feel. HTC today confirmed it made a $102 million loss in its Q3. The company has focused on the high end of Android and hit a brick wall. The problem is Android has been commoditized, making it harder and harder to differentiate - unless you're fighting on price, and that's a race to bottom.

So rebadging budget Chinese-made droids and selling ‘em cheap is increasingly the order of the day for Android, even (apparently) in Europe. Kazam said it will be selling its phones through “a variety of local retailers, as well as online” - including launching its own webshop.

“Kazam has a network of regional offices in the following locations: U.K., Germany, France, Spain, Denmark and Poland. From these locations we are able to serve all European countries, this is further helped by a partnership with [distributor] Ingram Micro Mobility,” Atkins added.

Kazam's smartphones are running stock Android. Its differentiation here is price, plus some focus on support services - to attract more mainstream buyers and likely also help it bridge the retail sales gap if it's mostly selling online.

“Our current range of smartphones will be on the Android operating system. Reflecting our straight thinking, Kazam has opted for native Android, there is no need for a skin, it is a wasted investment and frankly can make the experience worse,” he said.

Tour the Red Planet In 3D On The Mars Express

by Nicole Nguyen

Editor's note: This post was originally published by our partners at PopSugar Tech.

Take a ride on the Mars Express, a spacecraft launched by the European Space Agency over 10 years ago, to see Mars as never seen before. After over a decade of capturing images, the ESA has compiled all the data and made it into a stunning 3D flyover.

This showcase zips through 3D renderings of Mars's canyons, craters, lava flows, and ancient riverbeds. The Mars Express Orbiter circled the red planet over 12,500 times to gather the information required to get a sense of the planet's topography.

Aboard the Mars Express is a high resolution stereo camera (HRSC), which was able to fully capture the dimension of the planet's surface. It took much adjusting from the German Aerospace Centre to get the probe's altitude just right so that the camera could work properly. Turns out that the magic number is 277 kilometers (about 172 miles) above ground.

See the solar system's highest known mountain and much more the mesmerizing video below.

EE to trial LTE-Advanced in London from December

by Alex Dobie

London

Carrier boasts 300Mbps speeds for businesses in London's Tech City area

Always looking to cement its lead over rival providers, UK LTE network operator EE has announced that it's partnered with Huawei to bring data speeds of up to 300Mbps to London's Tech City, as part of its LTE-Advanced trials. The scheme will kick off in December in conjunction with businesses in Tech City, an area of East London home to many high-tech organizations. Customers won't be able to get these faster data speeds directly on devices until mid-2014 though, instead the trial will begin using Huawei Cat. 6 Wifi hotspots, which will provide access over an 802.11 ac connection.

To achieve such high speeds EE says it's paired 20MHz of 1800MHz spectrum with a further 20MHz of 2.6GHz obtained through the recent 4G spectrum auction. The EE 300Mbps trial is due to be extended to other parts of London in 2014 — naturally, you'll need an as yet unreleased Cat. 6 mobile device to take advantage of the faster network when it's available.
