Spotify Reminded of uTorrent Past After Branding Grooveshark ‘Pirates’

by Andy

spotifyAt this point it’s unlikely that readers will be unaware that Taylor Swift has removed her music from Spotify, complaining that the service fails to “fairly compensate” artists, writers and producers.

“We were both young when we first saw you, but now there’s more than 40 million of us who want you to stay, stay, stay,” Spotify said in a response. “It’s a love story, baby. Just say yes.”

Swift did not, despite claims from Spotify CEO Daniel Ek that the artist was on track to pull in $6 million from Spotify this year if she’d left her content online. Presumably she’ll still get few million dollars from the streaming service, but in a statement yesterday Ek said that reduced availability for fans will mean more turn to illegal services such as the world most notorious torrent site.

“And sure enough, if you looked at the top spot on The Pirate Bay last week, there was 1989,” he said.

While that revelation wasn’t too much of a surprise, nor the highlighting of YouTube as a potential magnet for fans who don’t want to pay, the decision by Ek to flag up a competitor as a pirate holdout has poured yet more fuel onto the Swift fire.

“[Swift's] songs are all over services and sites like YouTube and Soundcloud, where people can listen all they want for free,” said Ek. “To say nothing of the fans who will just turn back to pirate services like Grooveshark.”

groovesharkThe gibe drew an instant rebuttal from James A. Pearson, EVP Corporate Communications at Grooveshark.

“We would normally never comment on a competitive service and their dust-up with one of the world’s most popular artists. But as Spotify’s CEO — who it’s worth mentioning is the recent CEO of uTorrent — an app used by over 100M people, which had similar perception issues — called Grooveshark ‘a pirate service’ in his blog response to Taylor Swift today, we had to comment on that element,” Pearson said.

On the history, Pearson is correct. In the early days of uTorrent Ek worked with uTorrent creator Ludvig ‘Ludde’ Strigeus before the pair sold up to BitTorrent Inc. in late 2006 and disappeared into the moonlight to create Spotify. Strigeus is a Spotify developer to this very day.

Of course, mentioning uTorrent in retaliation to “pirate service” remarks doesn’t really help calm things down and only drags other third parties into the controversy. However, when looking at the spat from Ek’s perspective it’s not difficult to see why he’s irritated by Grooveshark.

Search Spotify today for Taylor Swift’s 1989 and the only results returned are for cover versions by former cruise ship musician Robert W. Weber, aka Molotov Cocktail Piano. Search Grooveshark for the same and it’s an entirely different story.

Swift

The odd situation here is that while Swift put her own music on Spotify and will get millions back this year as a result, she has now stopped that revenue stream by removing it entirely. On the other hand she didn’t put her music on Grooveshark but it’s there for anyone to stream, until she has someone pull it down with a DMCA complaint of course.

Why the Spotify retraction came before the Grooveshark deletion is anyone’s guess. In a 2013 interview, Grooveshark CEO Sam Tarantino reported that in 2009-2011 his service had 35 million users. Today Spotify has an estimated 50 million so calling the services ‘competitors’ is probably fairly accurate, despite the differences in their business models.

Spotify say they have paid $2 billion to artists while Grooveshark claims that licensing deals in place with thousands of artists has resulted in “million” in payments. However, up to now neither the company nor Swift have mentioned a specific licensing deal for the singer’s music. Until they do, Daniel Ek is unlikely to withdraw his statement.

Manslaughter conviction overturned for Italian geologists, but other scientists are still fearful

by Arielle Duhaime-Ross

Six Italian geologists were cleared yesterday of manslaughter charges in the deaths of 29 people, who perished in a major earthquake in 2009. Any joy these scientists felt at having their conviction overturned was short-lived; as they left the courthouse, angry citizens were shouting, "For shame!" The scientists had initially been convicted of manslaughter for failing to predict the earthquake that ravaged the Italian town of L'Aquila. But in the wake of their successful appeal, some questions remain, including whether scientists will be willing to continue dispensing advice to laypeople, now that they know they can be threatened with prosecution for doing so.

Scientists involved in disaster assessment everywhere anxiously watched ...

Spotify responds to Taylor Swift, says it's paid over $2 billion in royalties

by Chris Welch

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek is getting tired of the narrative that his company is screwing over musicians and songwriters. This morning, he took to Spotify's blog with a lengthy defense of its business and the streaming model at large. And he didn't ignore the elephant in the room: Taylor Swift's recent divorce from Spotify. "Taylor Swift is absolutely right: music is art, art has real value, and artists deserve to be paid for it," Ek wrote. "So all the talk swirling around lately about how Spotify is making money on the backs of artists upsets me big time." According to the CEO, royalties paid to Swift — prior to her disappearance — and other top mainstream artists "are on track to exceed $6 million a year."

Ek revealed some broader numbers...

Microsoft bundles all of its best subscription services into a $199 deal

by Tom Warren

Microsoft is bundling all of its key consumer services into a single deal this holiday season. Dubbed the "Work & Play Bundle," the $199 package is available in US Microsoft stores until January 4th and includes Office 365 Home, Xbox Live Gold, Xbox Music Pass, and Skype Unlimited World. Separately, that would cost around $450 annually, but Microsoft is pricing its bundle at just $199. That’s a big reduction of more than 50 percent for services that give you access to the full Office suite, unlimited OneDrive storage, Xbox Live, music streaming without ads, and unlimited Skype calls.

It’s clearly a great deal if you live in a Microsoft world and rely on these services day-to-day, but it’s hard to see this particular bundle appealing to...

Vuze Debuts Chromecast-Compatible Android Torrent Client

by Andy

chromecastYears ago, obtaining content and then deciding it might be better viewed on another device presented obstacles for the average torrent downloader.

The first option, of watching the content on the machine it had been downloaded to, was clearly the easiest. Those (often Xvid) files could also be copied to CD or DVD for transferring to another machine, such as a laptop for example.

Those wanting to shift that content to a larger screen either needed to download DVD compatible files in the first place, or expend time and processing power to encode video into DVD format. Neither was ideal – one took too long to transfer while the other took too long to encode.

These days things are much more streamlined and thanks to Google’s innovative Chromecast device, shifting content from small to big screen is easier than ever before. The cost-friendly stick can be plugged into any TV HDMI port and have content streamed or ‘cast’ to it from compatible hardware and software.

The latest company to support Chromecast is torrent client developer Azureus Software, the company behind the popular Vuze client. In addition to powerful Windows, OSX and Linux desktop versions, Azureus also offers Vuze Torrent Downloader, a lightweight client for the Android platform.

vuzefrogAvailable for free from the Play Store, Vuze Torrent Downloader has all the features the mobile downloader needs, such as magnet link support and torrent searching from within the app. The new 1.6 version adds full Chromecast support, enabling content to be downloaded on tablets and phones and then streamed or “cast” to a TV or large screen.

“We’re excited to piggyback on the rapid growth of Google’s Chromecast product and contribute to the expanding ecosystem of devices and content available today,” explains Vuze General Manager Claude Tolbert.

“The new Vuze app makes it to simple to tap, share and stream torrent files on a larger screen along with better sound systems in a comfortable and convenient setting.”

As expected, torrents streamed to Chromecast from within Vuze can be controlled from the application’s interface using familiar pause, resume and skip functions.

Finally, Tolbert notes that Google has reported more than 400 million “cast” clicks since it launched Chromecast in 2013, an indication of the platform’s popularity in today’s multi-device world.

“People have adopted streaming as a form of new technology. By integrating Chromecast functionality into Vuze Torrent Downloader we’re able to help bridge what people want with relevant functionality in our Vuze app. It just makes sense,” Tolbert concludes.

Ted Cruz just called net neutrality 'Obamacare for the internet' and that's bad news for everyone

How to Deal with Excessive Sweat

by Patrick Allan

How to Deal with Excessive Sweat

It's time to stop living in fear of raising your arms. If you suffer from excessive sweating, wet armpits, and sweat stained fabrics, here are some tips to make your life a little easier.

Why You Sweat So Darn Much

How to Deal with Excessive Sweat

First of all, sweating is completely healthy and good for you. Everyone sweats. It's how your body cools off, removes toxins, and maintains salinity in your body. So don't sweat too much about sweating.

You have up to 5 million sweat glands located all over your body, and two types of glands do most of the work: Apocrine glands, which are found mainly in your armpit area, and Eccrine glands, which are more abundant and found all over your body. The Encyclopaedia Britannica explains that your Apocrine glands are usually the culprits when it comes to most embarassing sweating issues:

Apocrine sweat glands, which are usually associated with hair follicles, continuously secrete a fatty sweat into the gland tubule. Emotional stress causes the tubule wall to contract, expelling the fatty secretion to the skin, where local bacteria break it down into odorous fatty acids.

The fact that most of your Apocrine glands are concentrated in your underarm region is why you only put deodorant or antiperspirant under your arms and not all over your body. Your Eccrine glands, on the other hand, fire off when your body gets too hot and you need to cool down. Most of the wetness you feel when you work out or when you're in a hot environment comes from these glands, but the there is much less odor. Here are a few of the main causes for excessive sweating (besides being hot):

  • Exercise: When your body heats up from exercise, sweat is produced to cool you off.
  • Nervousness: Your fight or flight system activates when you're nervous and it creates a rush of hormones in your body. Your heart rate increases and you start to burn energy, so your sweat once again comes to cool your body down.
  • Hyperhidrosis: According to Harvard Medical School, Hyperhidrosis is a condition that affects 1-3% of the population and involves excessive sweat in the palms, underarms, feet, and groin. Essentially, people with Hyperhidrosis produce a great deal more sweat than what's considered normal.
  • Emotions: Strong emotions like anger, excitement, or stress can activate your sweat glands. Similar to the way being nervous makes you sweat, strong positive feelings—like seeing the love of your life or being next in line to get on your favorite ride—can crank up your sweat production.

There are other factors that can increase your sweating—like your genes—but these are the main contributors for excessive sweat.

How to Prevent Over-Sweating

How to Deal with Excessive Sweat

Antiperspirants and deodorants can help some when it comes to sweat problems, but they aren't always 100% effective. If wetness is a problem for you, use an antiperspirant, and consider putting it on before you go to bed at night. If you struggle with body odor, deodorant is designed to kill the stinky bacteria that feeds off of your sweat byproducts and make you smell nice.

Sometimes antiperspirants aren't enough, though. If excessive sweat is something you deal with on a regular basis, there are some foods you may want to avoid. Consider reducing your coffee intake. Some studies, like this one in the Journal of Medicinal Food, suggest that caffeine has an effect on your central nervous system, causing you to sweat more. Drinking it hot doesn't help you either, as it raises your body temperature. You also may want to avoid "spicy" foods. Barry Green, from the John B. Pierce Laboratory, explains in Scientific American why spicy foods have some "heat" to them:

...spicy foods excite the receptors in the skin that normally respond to heat. Those receptors are pain fibers, technically known as polymodal nociceptors... The central nervous system can be confused or fooled when these pain fibers are stimulated by a chemical, like that in chile peppers, which triggers an ambiguous neural response. The central nervous system reacts to whatever the sensory system tells it is going on. Therefore, the pattern of activity from pain and warm nerve fibers triggers both the sensations and the physical reactions of heat, including vasodilation, sweating and flushing.

The cause of your sweating can go beyond preventative measures, though. Find a way to better deal with your stress and anxiety, and if you feel like you sweat way more than other people, a visit with your doctor might help you find a solution.

Keep Your Body Odor Under Control

How to Deal with Excessive Sweat

Excessive sweat usually leads to body odor, but there are ways to keep it under control. The most obvious way is to wear a good deodorant. Deodorant not only covers up BO with pleasant smells, it also contains alcohol to kill the bacteria that's causing those unfortunate scents. A squirt or two of cologne or perfume doesn't hurt either.

The food you eat can also play a part as well. According to UC Berkeley, a couple types of food and drink can contribute to your body odor:

  • Foods containing sulfur: Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and any other plants in the Brassica genus. Plants in the Allium genus, like onions and garlic, can contribute as well.
  • Alcohol: Once consumed, alcohol is metabolized into acetic acid, but some is released through your sweat causing a stench.

A somewhat obvious tip—but one some people still manage to disregard—is bathing every day. If you're aware of your BO problem, bathing every day with antibacterial soap should be a no-brainer. Skipping a day or two lets the bacteria build up and it will only continue to get worse. Last but not least, you can shave your armpits. A majority of women already practice this, but it can be beneficial for men too. When you shave your armpits, you remove hair that is keeping antiperspirants and deodorants from getting to your skin, and the sweat that's produced there may be able to evaporate faster to reduce wetness.

Dress to Hide Your Sweat

How to Deal with Excessive Sweat

Some people—myself included—just sweat and don't stop sweating no matter what products they use or what foods they avoid. In those cases, you're left with some limited options (unless you want to get botox injected in your armpits). One of the ways you can take control over you sweat issues is by dressing to hide it away.

There are plenty of options in the clothing realm to keep you looking like a normal dry person. For starters, the colors you wear make a huge difference. James Harris, writing for Complex, shares some tips on what colors you should and shouldn't put on your abnormally moist body:

Dark colors like navy and black won't show wet stains that badly, and neither will very light colors like white. Grays, blues, and bright colors are the worst options for hiding sweat, and they'll definitely show the world that you can't stand the heat.

Additionally, certain types of patterns can help you hide glaring wet spots too. You can wear patterns like plaid or camo and sweat won't stand out. You may also want to wear something underneath your visible clothing. Mike Theobald at Everyday Health suggests dressing in layers:

Wear a breathable undershirt to absorb sweat before it reaches the outer layer of your clothing. Adding a jacket or cardigan in a breathable material may also help keep sweat from coming into view. Just be sure your layers are thin or appropriate to the season — you don't want to feel overheated and worsen the problem.

Besides color and the number of layers you wear, you might also want to think about the materials you're wearing. Something breathable is beneficial, but as Men's Health points out, cotton is king:

It breathes. True, cotton is exactly the wrong thing to wear in the gym when you sweat hard—it soaks up the sweat instead of wicking it away. But in the moderately moist conditions of the office, cotton is your choice for staying cool. Polyester or poly/cotton blends tend to trap heat, causing you to sweat more.

There's nothing wrong with trying to dress to impress, but you being comfortable in what you're wearing is your number one priority. If an outfit is going highlight your sweaty spots, you're probably better off wearing something else.

Prevent Sweat Stains on Your Clothes

How to Deal with Excessive Sweat

There are plenty of other ways to fight the horrible, staining wet spots. If you have the luxury, prevent any visible sweating from the start with what you wear. Here's a few more tips you can use:

  • Air those pits out: One of the most effective ways to avoid pit stains—and one of my personal favorites—is removing the chance for your sweat to show itself in the first place. Wear a tank top or any other type of shirt that has big arm holes. Now—assuming you have a deodorant keeping the odor under control—you can sweat as much as you like and no one is going to notice.
  • Keep a change of clothes on hand: Switch your clothes when things start to get too sweaty. You can even keep an extra set of what you're wearing with you and it's like nothing ever happened. Not all sweat issues are pit-related, so this is one of the best options for those situations.
  • Wear sweat shields: There are over-the-counter pads that you can wear or attach to clothing that absorbs sweat before it ever gets to your outer layers. If you're in a pinch, you can also make some simple ones with some tape and paper towels. It beats disappearing every 10 minutes to dry off your pits in the bathroom.

Pit stains can be very embarrassing, but there are plenty of ways around them. The most important thing you can do is plan ahead. Know your body, think about what you're wearing, and consider the activities you'll be taking part in throughout the day. If you know that you sweat a lot, buy dark or patterned clothing. If you know you'll be dancing in your dress shirt, consider wearing an undershirt or sweat pad.

How to Remove Sweat Stains

How to Deal with Excessive Sweat

One of the most annoying parts about sweating so much is that you can stain clothing and bedding. If you can't prevent it, you can at least remove it. Brett at The Art of Manliness tried several different options for removing yellow pit stains—including bleach, ammonia, Oxiclean-like stain removers, and Raise Yellow Stain Remover—and finally recommended using the Oxiclean-type products:

All you have to do is fill up a sink with warm water and mix it with one scoop of OxiClean. Place your blighted shirt in the sink, making sure the yellow stains are completely submerged. For mild stains, just let the shirt sit for an hour; for DEFCON 5 stains, let your shirt sit overnight. After you're done soaking, rinse your shirt and launder as usual.

Don't hesitate to use it on other garments or bed sheets as well for those night sweaters out there. If you're interested in a homemade remedy, you can make your own Oxyclean-like stain remover with a mixture of dishwashing detergent and hydrogen peroxide. Mix one part dishwashing liquid with two parts hydrogen peroxide and let the mixture sit on the stain for at least an hour. For tougher stains, add in a little baking soda and scrub. The yellow stains on a t-shirt or bedspread can be just as embarrassing as the wet spots themselves, so don't hesitate to banish those canaries.

It's possible to prevent some sweating, but it's going to happen no matter what, so don't fret! There are plenty of ways to work around the wetness, and several weapons to combat odor. Excessive sweat is embarrassing—believe me—but you can still take control.

Mirror Records Your Android Screen Without Root on Lollipop

Mirror Records Your Android Screen Without Root on Lollipop

Android: Recording your screen on Android has typically required either root access or complicated workarounds. As of Android 5.0, not only has that limitation lifted, but Mirror is already ready to take advantage of the new functionality.

Mirror's more than a one-trick pony, of course. It can also cast your screen to devices like the Chromecast or Apple TV. However, recording your screen to a video file is certainly the headlining feature. If you're not on Android 5.0 yet (and most people aren't), the app still works if you have root access.

One of the new features introduced in Android Lollipop is an android.media.projection API that allows apps to capture the device's screen. Unlike KitKat 4.4, where you could achieve this through ADB and a USB cable (or on your phone directly with some root privileges), this new API works out of the box and opens the screen recording feature to non-root devices.

When we first reported on this option, only a couple of apps had made use of it.

Pirate Bay Founder Peter Sunde Released From Prison

by Ernesto

peter-sundeAfter being on the run for two years Peter Sunde, aka brokep, was arrested during a family visit in southern Sweden late May.

Despite being accused of non-violent crimes, Peter was transferred to a high-security unit. His time in prison was tough.

There was no concern for his vegan diet and he was struggling with depression. As a result Peter lost more than 15 kilograms.

“The worst thing is the boredom”, Peter said in August, summing up his daily routine. “I have soy yoghurt and muesli for breakfast, which I was recently allowed to buy from my own money, as the prison doesn’t offer any vegan food.”

Today Peter’s struggle in prison comes to an end. After more than five months he is now a free man again. A few hours ago he left prison to be reunited with his loved ones, and in a way, with himself.

“My body just got re-united with my soul and mind, the parts of me that matters and that never can be held hostage. #freebrokep #brokepfree,” he Tweets.

#brokepfree
sunde-free

Although there is no denying that Peter was physically and mentally impacted by his stay in prison, he is now truly free. No longer a fugitive, the former Pirate Bay spokesperson can travel the world again.

“Things will get easier once I get out,” Peter said previously. “I’ve been a fugitive for two years and could hardly go to conferences or would have to show up unannounced.”

Now that his sentence has come to an end, Peter will probably take some time to gain strength and spend time with friends and family.

After that, he will continue to work on his many Internet related projects including the micro-donation service Flattr and the encrypted chat application Heml.is. As always, activism remains a high priority too.

“I’m brimming with ideas and that one of my main goals will be to develop ethical ways of funding activism,” he said in August. “You often need money to change things. But most ways of acquiring it require you to compromise on your ideals. We can do better than that.”

Welcome back Peter!

PSA: UK small businesses, don't get ripped off by BT's "PC Security" scam

by Cory Doctorow

I cancelled my small business BT account last year when they endorsed the Tory Internet censorship plan -- and to my surprise, they kept sending me bills, but that wasn't nearly so surprising as what I discovered next: a seven-year-long overbilling ripoff that took most of a year to untangle. LG rolling out Android 5.0 to the G3 starting this week

by Andrew Martonik

LG has announced that its flagship G3 will start receiving an Android 5.0 Lollipop update this week, beginning with users in Poland. Naturally LG is staying clear of giving exact rollout dates for other regions, saying that "key markets" will get the update in "the near future." Of course that doesn't mean it's coming right away to G3 users around the world, but you have to think that if its ready to go for one model this week it's not far from hitting other devices, too.

AVG Monitors Torrenting Habits to Advise Heavy Downloaders

by Ernesto

avglogoIn recent years anti-piracy vendors have shown a keen interest in file-sharing and online piracy issues.

Symantec, for example, has developed a technology that allows it to spot fake torrents and malware before they’re downloaded.

On the other hand, rival McAfee have taken an anti-piracy approach by inventing a system that can detect and block pirated material from any website and present users with authorized and legal alternatives instead.

This week we learned that AVG, another major player in the anti-virus business, is keeping an eye on BitTorrent traffic as well. Not to detect intruders or stop piracy, but to give users some friendly advice.

BitTorrent traffic can chew up a lot of bandwidth and cripple one’s local network, especially with badly configured clients. This can slow down web browsing to a crawl, something AVG is alerting its users to.

The following alert pops up for some BitTorrent users. In this case related to traffic generated by uTorrent, but it may appear for other clients as well.

Hey torrenter…avgtorrent

While not everyone may like the fact that their anti-virus software has begun commenting on their torrenting habits, the advice may be useful to some. As far as we know AVG is not looking at what people download, just the network load generated by the application.

Those who want to get rid of the notifications can tick the ‘AVG Advisor Notification’ box in the software settings.

In pictures: Our best look yet at Project Ara

by Phil Nickinson

A close-up look at how the modular smartphone is coming along

We're still quite a ways a away from modular smartphones — as in a device with interchangeable components — becoming a thing. But that hasn't done a thing to lessen the excitement over Project Ara, which is very much trying to make this sort of customizable smartphone a viable product. Our pal Myriam Joire — tnkgrl — brought us these shots from Friday night's press preview at Engadget Expand in New York City, giving us our best look yet at Project Ara.

The device you see is running an older version of Android, but it should brought up to snuff before any sort of public release. Paul Eremenko, with Google's Advanced Technology Projects and project lead of Project Ara, showed how the modules can be swapped at will — that's called hot-swapping for those of us who swap things hotly — can accept and store power, and how the Endoskeleton's bus knows how to handle all that hot swapping.
