[Update: Indiegogo Campaign Is Bogus] Remix' Big 11.6" Android Tablet With A Full Keyboard And Multi-Window Enabled OS Reaches Its $100K Kickstarter Goal In A Day

by Rita El Khoury

remix-tablet-thumb

This isn't your typical Kickstarter. Jeremy Chau, one of the company's co-founders, states it clearly from the get-go in the campaign's introductory video. Remix isn't a bunch of over-promised under-delivered hogwash that may get stuck for years in the development and manufacturing process like 90% of Kickstarter products — it is a real tablet, it was demo'ed at CES, and it's already being sold in China.

Amazon Cloud Drive can now store unlimited files for $60 a year

by Jacob Kastrenakes

Amazon is making cloud storage a whole lot more affordable. It's overhauling the pricing structure for Cloud Drive today to offer two unlimited storage plans — neither of which is very expensive. For $11.99 per year, Amazon is offering unlimited photo storage and 5GBs of storage for anything else you want to host online. For $59.99, Amazon will host anything you want, with no storage limit. Those prices are a lot less expensive than what you'll find from many of Amazon's biggest competitors, including iCloud, Google Drive, and Dropbox. Microsoft also offers unlimited cloud storage (alongside access to Office 365), though it costs a small amount more.

Even though Amazon may be taking the lead in a big way on pricing, that doesn't make it...

New Trailer For Spooks: The Greater Good

New Trailer For Spooks: The Greater Good

It's Harry's game

We’ve had protocols, ultimatums, even then the odd quantum, but now it’s time to embrace the notion of ‘the greater good’. The Spooks motion picture – Spooks: The Greater Good to give it its full title – gets bundled blindfolded out of an unmarked van and into our cinemas in May and it has a new trailer to share with the world. Click below for some helter-skelter lunchtime fun.

Die-hard Spookies might have given up on seeing a big-screen version of the BBC spy series but here it is, promising all the unsparing character drama and tension that made the show so beloved. It mixes zeitgeisty currency and Spooks heritage with Kit Harington’s Will Holloway and Peter Firth’s Harry Pearce, the old MI5 warhorse, working in concert to stop a terrorist threat. That menace is represented by the magnetic and ruthless Adam Qasim (Elyes Gabel), whose motives are only slightly murkier than those at the top of Thames House and within the British government.

So who can Harry and Will trust in their bid to prevent the escaped Qasim carry out an atrocity in London? Can they even trust each other? Surely they can trust Tuppence Middleton’s MI5 field agent? OR CAN THEY?

As returning director Bharat Nalluri, the man who made the pilot episode back in 2002, points out, it's the idea of finding the best of a lot of very terrible options tht underpins both title and film. “'The greater good’ has been the dilemma for Spooks for the last ten years,” he tells Empire, "and I think that’s what makes it kind of slightly unique as a show, and as a movie as well. Do you kill one person to save a thousand?  Should you do that?  Does that make you a better person, a worse person?  The choices aren’t easy and they’ve never been easy.”

See for yourself when Spooks: The Greater Good gets its UK release on May 8, with Jennifer Ehle, Elyes Gabel, David Harewood and Tim McInnerny also aboard.

The FTC explains why it didn't sue Google

by Rich McCormick

Earlier today, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Federal Trade Commission was deeply divided over whether to sue Google for anticompetitive practices after investigations began in 2012. But the FTC has now countered that report, claiming that its decision on the allegations "was in accord with the recommendations of the FTC's Bureau of Competition, Bureau of Economics, and Office of General Counsel," and that "not a single fact is offered to substantiate [The Wall Street Journal's] misleading narrative."

Periscope, Twitter's answer to Meerkat-style live-streaming, is now available

by Casey Newton

Live-streaming apps are the thirstiest of all media. A Facebook post wants a like, a tweet begs for favs, and a snap means little without a response. But for sheer drop-everything, look-at-me arrogance, nothing beats the push notification that says "LIVE NOW." I’m doing literally anything, the notification says. Watch now, or you’ll miss out forever.

The surprise emergence of Meerkat as a social phenomenon this year has been accompanied by a frequent complaint: the links are usually dead by the time you click them. All that thirst, and it’s totally unslaked. But even as the app began to be discovered by celebrities and other high-profile users, Twitter employees began shouting that a better solution was on the horizon: Periscope, an app...

UK Blocking More Than 100 Pirate Sites After New Court Order

by Ernesto

cassetteFollowing a series of High Court orders six UK ISPs are required to block subscriber access to many of the largest pirate sites.

The efforts started in 2012 and the list continued to grow in the years that followed.

In a new wave the BPI, which represents the major record labels, has teamed up with music licensing outfit Phonographic Performance Limited to obtain an order targeting a series of MP3 download sites.

This latest round expands the UK blocklist by 17 MP3 download sites, including stafaband.info, rnbxclusive.se, plixid.com and mp3.li. It brings the total number of blocked sites over a hundred, 110 to be precise.

Nearly all of the newly blocked sites are so-called MP3 search engines. However, the list also includes megasearch.co, a website that allows users to find files on the Mega cloud storage service founded by Kim Dotcom.

Plixid
plixid

A few days ago several providers including Sky, BT and Virgin implemented the new changes, making it harder for their subscribers to reach these sites. The other ISPs are expected to follow suit during the days to come.

Thus far the sealed Court order hasn’t been released to the public but the list of 17 sites was confirmed to TorrentFreak by one of the major ISPs, which preferred not to comment on the latest blocking round.

Because the ISPs have given up on defending their position in court, it is now a mere formality for copyright holders to have a pirate site banned. However, the blocking efforts are not without cost.

Leaked information previously revealed that even an unopposed application for a blocking order costs copyright holders around £14,000 per website. This brings the total costs of the requesting parties well over a million pounds.

TF approached the BPI for a comment on the latest blocking efforts, but we have yet to hear back.

—-

The full list of sites that are currently blocked in the UK is as follows:

New: Bursalagu, Fullsongs, Mega-Search, Mp3 Monkey, Mp3.li, Mp3Bear, MP3Boo, Mp3Clan, Mp3Olimp, MP3s.pl, Mp3soup, Mp3Truck, Musicaddict, My Free MP3, Plixid, RnBXclusive and STAFA Band.

Previously blocked: watchseries.lt, Stream TV, Watchseries-online, Cucirca, Movie25, watchseries.to, Iwannawatch, Warez BB, Ice Films, Tehparadox, Heroturko, Scene Source,, Rapid Moviez, Iwatchonline, Los Movies, Isohunt, Torrentz.pro, Torrentbutler, IP Torrents, Sumotorrent, Torrent Day, Torrenting, BitSoup, TorrentBytes, Seventorrents, Torrents.fm, Yourbittorrent, Tor Movies , Demonoid, torrent.cd, Vertor, Rar BG, bittorrent.am, btdigg.org, btloft.com, bts.to, limetorrents.com, nowtorrents.com, picktorrent.com, seedpeer.me, torlock.com, torrentbit.net, torrentdb.li, torrentdownload.ws, torrentexpress.net, torrentfunk.com, torrentproject.com, torrentroom.com, torrents.net, torrentus.eu, torrentz.cd, torrentzap.com, vitorrent.org.Megashare, Viooz, Watch32, Zmovie, Solarmovie, Tubeplus, Primewire, Vodly, Watchfreemovies, Project-Free TV, Yify-Torrents, 1337x, Bitsnoop, Extratorrent, Monova, Torrentcrazy, Torrentdownloads, Torrentreactor, Torrentz, Ambp3, Beemp3, Bomb-mp3, Eemp3world, Filecrop, Filestube, Mp3juices, Mp3lemon, Mp3raid, Mp3skull, Newalbumreleases, Rapidlibrary, EZTV, FirstRowSports, Download4all, Movie2K, KickAssTorrents, Fenopy, H33T and The Pirate Bay.

SodaStream is making a new machine that can carbonate basically anything

by Chris Ziegler

SodaStream, the company whose carbonators have rapidly proliferated through kitchens around the world in recent years, has a problem: the machines that it has on the market can only carbonate water. You make the water fizzy with a replaceable CO2 canister, then afterward you can drop in some flavored syrup if you want. (Trust me, I've tried carbonating other things — it can turn into an explosive mess in a hurry.)

The X-Files is coming back to television

by Bryan Bishop

As if we needed any more proof that the 1990s are alive and well, The Wrap is reporting that The X-Files will be coming back to Fox as a six-episode limited series. While such a landmark show returning in one form or another is almost expected at this point, the big news is that the entire team is on board: David Duchovny will be returning as Agent Fox Mulder, Gillian Anderson as Agent Dana Scully, and creator and executive producer Chris Carter will be overseeing it all.

The X-Files originally ran for nine seasons and spawned two theatrical films; its network run ended in 2002. "I think of it as a 13-year commercial break," Carter said in a statement. "The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to...

Even office mice now come with a narrative of craftsmanship and care

by Vlad Savov

Precise craftsmanship. Relentless refinement. The uncompromising pursuit of perfection. It's funny how all of these high aspirations can be condensed and expressed in the simple act of sanding down a block of wood. Throw in a nicely sharpened pencil and an earnest-looking designer, and you have the makings of basically every Apple or HTC design video ever made. Those tech companies have been following the example set by watchmakers, who have emphasized the artisanal, handcrafted nature of their products for decades.

One thing I hadn't yet seen, however, is a design story for a good old computer mouse. But here it is, the Logitech MX Master Wireless Mouse, replete with its own genealogical narrative. Every design buzzword is present on...

The Guilt-Free Guide to Parting Ways with Your Sentimental Items

by Patrick Allan

The Guilt-Free Guide to Parting Ways with Your Sentimental Items

When you're trying to declutter your home, sentimental items pose a difficult challenge. They take up valuable space, but you feel guilty when you even think about getting rid of them. Here are a few tips to help you go through your keepsakes without feeling like a heartless monster.

Remember That You Are Not Made of Your "Stuff"

The Guilt-Free Guide to Parting Ways with Your Sentimental Items

As you start to get rid of your things, constantly remind yourself that you are not comprised of your belongings. Even if you get rid of all your things, you're still you. This is harder to do with sentimental items because it seems like memories are attached to them, but Joshua Fields Millburn at The Minimalists explains that those memories are actually within you, not within your things. Keep that in mind as you go through your belongings and ask yourself, "do I need this in order to keep the memory?"

There are plenty of other ways to keep the memories without keeping the item. Take a photo of it, write it down in a journal, or perhaps even decide that it's a memory you don't need to keep anymore. In fact, if you're holding on to an item for a memory that weighs on you, it's probably time to say goodbye.

Write a Story About Your Favorite Items

The Guilt-Free Guide to Parting Ways with Your Sentimental Items

For items that do have exceptional memories or sentiment behind them, you can write a story that expresses everything you feel about it. This helps in a few ways:

  • You can transcribe the sentiment into something far more personal and compact.
  • You force yourself to realize what was so important about the item to begin with.
  • You can translate that importance into your life right now.

As you write your story, Courtney Carver at Becoming Minimalist suggests you might find that the feelings the item evokes goes far beyond just a memory:

...most sentimental things aren't things at all, but stories of the people and places we love, and how we spend our time... Your words may start out describing your mother's watch, but turn into a beautiful story about an afternoon the two of you spent together... Not only do you make room for the good stuff, but you can clearly identify what is most meaningful to you. Instead of filling boxes with the things that define your life, spend more time creating your life...

That story about your mother's watch might prompt you to spend more time with her. Or it might make you realize that you want to give your kids as many memories like that as you can. Look beyond the memory and see what really makes that item important to you so you can let it go.

Keep Just One Thing Per Memory or Person

The Guilt-Free Guide to Parting Ways with Your Sentimental Items

If you have a lot of keepsakes, chances are there are plenty items that double up on memories and people. If you have two things that commemorate a baseball game you went to, pick your favorite and keep it. If you have a box full of memories from a friend or old flame, find something that provides the best memory and keep that. You don't need that much stuff to remember someone. You might even remember that you don't want to remember them, and it's time for them to go.

If it's somebody very dear to you that you've lost, dedicate an entire journal to them and write out every memory you can with each item. Add photos and small, flat things where you can and you'll see that you never really needed all that stuff to begin with.

Designate a Reasonably Sized Keepsake Box

The Guilt-Free Guide to Parting Ways with Your Sentimental Items

It's okay to keep a few things, especially if they're things you've already narrowed down. You still don't want it taking up too much space, though. Find a box that's roomy enough to fit a few things inside, but also small enough that it can hide away in a closet out of view. If all of your sentimental items can't fit in that box, go through them again until they can. Eventually you'll have an efficient storage solution for all your memories that can be easily accessed when you want to go back.

Give Your Keepsakes to Those Who Can Use Them

The Guilt-Free Guide to Parting Ways with Your Sentimental Items

Something that's sentimental to you is probably still useful to someone else. As you go through your things, knowing that someone else might be able to make new memories with an item can help you move on. You might love seeing your old toys every once in a while, but there's probably a kid in need that would love to play with them. Clothing, sports equipment, tools, and anything that isn't broken or overly personal—like photos—can be donated. You'll feel good getting the weight off your shoulders and feel good knowing you helped someone.

Of course, there's no need to rush through any of this. Digging through old memories can be painful and emotionally exhausting. Courtney Carver at Be More With Less emphasizes that it's important to take your time going through your stuff. As you go, ask yourself questions that can make it easier on you, and if you come across an item you've kept out of guilt, give it to someone else who can use it. It's not doing any good sitting there doing nothing. It's a big step to start getting rid of sentimental items, but it will help declutter your house and your mind.

The directors of Captain America: The Winter Soldier are taking over The Avengers franchise

by Bryan Bishop

Joss Whedon is stepping down from The Avengers franchise after Age of Ultron comes out this May, but Marvel has sewn up just about the best replacements possible for the next two installments: the Russo brothers. The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Joe and Anthony Russo will be taking on both parts of Avengers: Infinity War, which the duo will be filming in one massive shoot starting next year. Badass Digest first reported the news.

The Russos originally made their stamp on the Marvel universe with Captain America: The Winter Soldier. That film took what had been one of the goofier franchises in the studio's arsenal, and turned it into a surprising, '70s-era spy thriller. While the Russos' background was in comedy — they directed...
